Psalm 98

Psalm 98[a]

A psalm.

98 Sing to the Lord a new song,[b]
for he performs[c] amazing deeds.
His right hand and his mighty arm
accomplish deliverance.[d]
The Lord demonstrates his power to deliver;[e]
in the sight of the nations he reveals his justice.
He remains loyal and faithful to the family of Israel.[f]
All the ends of the earth see our God deliver us.[g]
Shout out praises to the Lord, all the earth.
Break out in a joyful shout and sing!
Sing to the Lord accompanied by a harp,
accompanied by a harp and the sound of music.
With trumpets and the blaring of the ram’s horn,
shout out praises before the king, the Lord.
Let the sea and everything in it shout,
along with the world and those who live in it.
Let the rivers clap their hands!
Let the mountains sing in unison
before the Lord.
For he comes to judge the earth.
He judges the world fairly,[h]
and the nations in a just manner.

Haggai 2:10-19

The Promised Blessing

10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month of Darius’ second year,[a] the Lord’s message came to the prophet Haggai:[b] 11 “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has said, ‘Ask the priests about the law.[c] 12 If someone carries holy meat in a fold of his garment and that fold touches bread, a boiled dish, wine, olive oil, or any other food, will that item become holy?’”[d] The priests answered, “It will not.” 13 Then Haggai asked, “If a person who is ritually unclean because of touching a dead body[e] comes in contact with one of these items, will it become unclean?” The priests answered, “It will be unclean.”

14 Then Haggai responded, “‘The people of this nation are unclean in my sight,’[f] decrees the Lord. ‘And so is all their effort; everything they offer is also unclean.[g] 15 Now therefore reflect carefully on the recent past,[h] before one stone was laid on another in the Lord’s temple.[i] 16 From that time[j] when one came expecting a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten; when one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty measures from it, there were only twenty. 17 I struck all the products of your labor[k] with blight, disease, and hail, and yet you brought nothing to me,’[l] says the Lord. 18 ‘Think carefully[m] about the past: from today, the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month,[n] to the day work on the temple of the Lord was resumed,[o] think about it.[p] 19 The seed is still in the storehouse, isn’t it? And the vine, fig tree, pomegranate, and olive tree have not produced. Nevertheless, from today on I will bless you.’”

2 Peter 1:16-21

16 For we did not follow cleverly concocted fables when we made known to you the power and return[a] of our Lord Jesus Christ;[b] no,[c] we were[d] eyewitnesses of his[e] grandeur.[f] 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father, when that[g] voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory: “This is my dear Son, in whom I am delighted.”[h] 18 When this voice was conveyed from heaven, we ourselves[i] heard it, for we were with him on the holy mountain.[j] 19 Moreover,[k] we[l] possess the prophetic word as an altogether reliable thing.[m] You do well if you pay attention[n] to this[o] as you would[p] to a light shining in a murky place, until the day dawns and the morning star[q] rises in your hearts.[r] 20 Above all, you do well if you recognize[s] this:[t] No prophecy of scripture ever comes about by the prophet’s own imagination,[u] 21 for no prophecy was ever borne of human impulse; rather, men[v] carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
