Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Water in the Rock
17 Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by [a]stages from the wilderness of (A)Sin, according to the [b]command of the Lord, and camped at (B)Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Therefore the people (C)quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “(D)Why do you quarrel with me? (E)Why do you test the Lord?” 3 But the people thirsted there for water; and [c]they (F)grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill [d]us and [e]our children and [f](G)our livestock with thirst?” 4 So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do to this people? A (H)little more and they will stone me.” 5 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of (I)the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which (J)you struck the Nile, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at (K)Horeb; and (L)you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 He named the place [g](M)Massah and [h](N)Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they (O)tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us, or not?”
Praise to the Lord, and Warning against Unbelief.
95 O come, let us (A)sing for joy to the Lord,
Let us shout joyfully to (B)the rock of our salvation.
2 Let us (C)come before His presence (D)with [a]thanksgiving,
Let us shout joyfully to Him (E)with [b]psalms.
3 For the Lord is a (F)great God
And a great King (G)above all gods,
4 In whose hand are the (H)depths of the earth,
The peaks of the mountains are His also.
5 [c]The sea is His, for it was He (I)who made it,
And His hands formed the dry land.
6 Come, let us (J)worship and bow down,
Let us (K)kneel before the Lord our (L)Maker.
7 For He is our God,
And (M)we are the people of His [d](N)pasture and the sheep of His hand.
(O)Today, [e]if you would hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts, as at [f](P)Meribah,
As in the day of [g](Q)Massah in the wilderness,
9 “When your fathers (R)tested Me,
They tried Me, though they had seen My work.
10 “For (S)forty years I loathed that generation,
And said they are a people who err in their heart,
And they do not know My ways.
11 “Therefore I (T)swore in My anger,
Truly they shall not enter into My (U)rest.”
Results of Justification
5 (A)Therefore, having been justified by faith, [a](B)we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have (C)obtained our introduction by faith into this grace (D)in which we stand; and [b]we exult in hope of the glory of God. 3 (E)And not only this, but [c]we also (F)exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about (G)perseverance; 4 and (H)perseverance, (I)proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope (J)does not disappoint, because the love of God has been (K)poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
6 For while we were still (L)helpless, (M)at the right time (N)Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; [d]though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God (O)demonstrates (P)His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, (Q)Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified [e](R)by His blood, we shall be saved (S)from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were (T)enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved [f](U)by His life. 11 (V)And not only this, [g]but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (W)the reconciliation.
5 So He *came to a city of (A)Samaria called Sychar, near (B)the parcel of ground that (C)Jacob gave to his son Joseph; 6 and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about [a]the sixth hour.
The Woman of Samaria
7 There *came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus *said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His (D)disciples had gone away into (E)the city to buy food. 9 Therefore the (F)Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For (G)Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (H)living water.” 11 She *said to Him, “[b]Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that (I)living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who (J)gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (K)shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to (L)eternal life.”
15 The woman *said to Him, “[c]Sir, (M)give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” 16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “[d]Sir, I perceive that You are (N)a prophet. 20 (O)Our fathers worshiped in (P)this mountain, and you people say that (Q)in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Woman, believe Me, (R)an hour is coming when (S)neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 (T)You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for (U)salvation is from the Jews. 23 But (V)an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (W)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 God is [e]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship (X)in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that (Y)Messiah is coming ((Z)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, “(AA)I who speak to you am He.”
27 At this point His (AB)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?” 28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and *said to the men, 29 “Come, see a man (AC)who told me all the things that I have done; (AD)this is not [f]the Christ, is it?” 30 They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “(AE)Rabbi, eat.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the (AF)disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34 Jesus *said to them, “My food is to (AG)do the will of Him who sent Me and to (AH)accomplish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white (AI)for harvest. 36 Already he who reaps is receiving (AJ)wages and is gathering (AK)fruit for (AL)life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this case the saying is true, ‘(AM)One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”
The Samaritans
39 From (AN)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “(AO)He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed (AP)the Savior of the world.”
