Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
God’s Promise concerning His Servant
42 “(A)Behold, My (B)Servant, whom I [a]uphold;
My (C)chosen one in whom My (D)soul delights.
I have put My (E)Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth (F)justice to the [b]nations.
2 “He will not cry out or raise His voice,
Nor make His voice heard in the street.
3 “A bruised reed He will not break
And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish;
He will faithfully bring forth (G)justice.
4 “He will not be (H)disheartened or crushed
Until He has established justice in the earth;
And the (I)coastlands will wait expectantly for His [c]law.”
5 Thus says God the Lord,
Who (J)created the heavens and (K)stretched them out,
Who spread out the (L)earth and its [d]offspring,
Who (M)gives breath to the people on it
And spirit to those who walk in it,
6 “I am the Lord, I have (N)called You in righteousness,
I will also (O)hold You by the hand and (P)watch over You,
And I will appoint You as a (Q)covenant to the people,
As a (R)light to the nations,
7 To (S)open blind eyes,
To (T)bring out prisoners from the dungeon
And those who dwell in darkness from the prison.
8 “(U)I am the Lord, that is (V)My name;
I will not give My (W)glory to another,
Nor My praise to [e]graven images.
9 “Behold, the (X)former things have come to pass,
Now I declare (Y)new things;
Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”
The Voice of the Lord in the Storm.
A Psalm of David.
29 (A)Ascribe to the Lord, O [a]sons of the mighty,
Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory [b]due to His name;
Worship the Lord (B)in [c]holy array.
3 The (C)voice of the Lord is upon the waters;
The God of glory (D)thunders,
The Lord is over [d](E)many waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is (F)powerful,
The voice of the Lord is majestic.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
Yes, the Lord breaks in pieces (G)the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon (H)skip like a calf,
And (I)Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord hews out [e]flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord [f]shakes the wilderness;
The Lord shakes the wilderness of (J)Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord makes (K)the deer to calve
And strips the forests bare;
And (L)in His temple everything says, “Glory!”
Gentiles Hear Good News
34 (A)Opening his mouth, Peter said:
“I most certainly understand now that (B)God is not one to show partiality, 35 but (C)in every nation the man who [a](D)fears Him and [b]does what is right is welcome to Him. 36 The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, (E)preaching [c](F)peace through Jesus Christ (He is (G)Lord of all)— 37 you yourselves know the thing which took place throughout all Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed. 38 [d]You know of (H)Jesus of Nazareth, how God (I)anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, [e](J)and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for (K)God was with Him. 39 We are (L)witnesses of all the things He did both in the [f]land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also (M)put Him to death by hanging Him on a [g]cross. 40 (N)God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He become visible, 41 (O)not to all the people, but to (P)witnesses who were chosen beforehand by God, that is, to us (Q)who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. 42 And He (R)ordered us to [h]preach to the people, and solemnly to (S)testify that this is the One who has been (T)appointed by God as (U)Judge of the living and the dead. 43 Of Him (V)all the prophets bear witness that through (W)His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.”
The Baptism of Jesus
13 (A)Then Jesus *arrived (B)from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” 15 But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us (C)to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he *permitted Him. 16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and [a](D)he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and [b]lighting on Him, 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “(E)This is [c]My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
