Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Thanksgiving Expressed
12 Then you will say on that day,
“(A)I will give thanks to You, O Lord;
For (B)although You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away,
And You comfort me.
2 “Behold, (C)God is my salvation,
I will (D)trust and not be afraid;
For (E)the Lord God is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation.”
3 Therefore you will joyously (F)draw water
From the (G)springs of salvation.
4 And in that day you will (H)say,
“(I)Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name.
(J)Make known His deeds among the peoples;
[a]Make them remember that His name is exalted.”
5 (K)Praise the Lord in song, for He has done [b]excellent things;
Let this be known throughout the earth.
6 (L)Cry aloud and shout for joy, O inhabitant of Zion,
For (M)great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.
Separation from God
59 Behold, (A)the Lord’s hand is not so short
That it cannot save;
(B)Nor is His ear so dull
That it cannot hear.
2 But your (C)iniquities have made a separation between you and your God,
And your sins have hidden His [a]face from you so that He does (D)not hear.
3 For your (E)hands are defiled with blood
And your fingers with iniquity;
Your lips have spoken (F)falsehood,
Your tongue mutters wickedness.
4 (G)No one sues righteously and (H)no one pleads [b]honestly.
They (I)trust in confusion and speak lies;
They (J)conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity.
5 They hatch adders’ eggs and (K)weave the spider’s web;
He who eats of their eggs dies,
And from that which is crushed a snake breaks forth.
6 Their webs will not become clothing,
Nor will they (L)cover themselves with their works;
Their (M)works are works of iniquity,
And an (N)act of violence is in their [c]hands.
7 (O)Their feet run to evil,
And they hasten to shed innocent blood;
(P)Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity,
Devastation and destruction are in their highways.
8 They do not know the (Q)way of peace,
And there is (R)no justice in their tracks;
They have made their paths crooked,
(S)Whoever treads on [d]them does not know peace.
A Confession of Wickedness
9 Therefore (T)justice is far from us,
And righteousness does not overtake us;
We (U)hope for light, but behold, darkness,
For brightness, but we walk in gloom.
10 We (V)grope along the wall like blind men,
We grope like those who have no eyes;
We (W)stumble at midday as in the twilight,
Among those who are vigorous we are (X)like dead men.
11 All of us growl like bears,
And (Y)moan sadly like doves;
We hope for (Z)justice, but there is none,
For salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our (AA)transgressions are multiplied before You,
And our (AB)sins [e]testify against us;
For our transgressions are with us,
And [f]we know our iniquities:
13 Transgressing and (AC)denying the Lord,
And turning away from our God,
Speaking (AD)oppression and revolt,
Conceiving in and (AE)uttering from the heart lying words.
14 (AF)Justice is turned back,
And (AG)righteousness stands far away;
For truth has stumbled in the street,
And uprightness cannot enter.
15 Yes, truth is lacking;
And he who turns aside from evil (AH)makes himself a prey.
Now the Lord saw,
And it was [g]displeasing in His sight (AI)that there was no justice.
3 We ought always (A)to give thanks to God for you, (B)brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the (C)love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater; 4 therefore, we ourselves (D)speak proudly of you among (E)the churches of God for your [a]perseverance and faith (F)in the midst of all your persecutions and afflictions which you endure. 5 This is a (G)plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you will be (H)considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which indeed you are suffering. 6 [b]For after all (I)it is only just [c]for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted [d]and to us as well [e](J)when the Lord Jesus will be revealed (K)from heaven (L)with [f]His mighty angels (M)in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who (N)do not know God and to those who (O)do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of (P)eternal destruction, (Q)away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes to be (R)glorified [g]in His [h]saints on that (S)day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed—for our (T)testimony to you was believed. 11 To this end also we (U)pray for you always, that our God will [i](V)count you worthy of your (W)calling, and fulfill every desire for (X)goodness and the (Y)work of faith with power, 12 so that the (Z)name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
