3 David driven forth of his kingdom, was greatly tormented in mind for his sins against God: 4 And therefore calleth upon God, and waxeth bold through his promises, against the great railings and terrors of his enemies, yea against death itself, which he saw present before his eyes. 7 Finally, he rejoiceth for the good success that God gave him and all the Church.
A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.
1 Lord, how are mine adversaries [a]increased? how many rise against me?
2 Many say to my soul, There is no help for him in God. [b]Selah.
3 But thou Lord art a buckler for me, my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
4 I did call unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy mountain. Selah.
5 I laid me down and slept, and rose up again: for the Lord sustained me.
6 I will not be afraid for [c]ten thousand of the people, that should beset me round about.
7 O Lord, arise: help me, my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheekbone: thou hast broken the teeth of the wicked.
8 [d]Salvation belongeth unto the Lord, and thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.
5 And thou shalt answer and say before the Lord thy God, A [a]Syrian was my father, who being ready to perish for hunger, went down into Egypt, and sojourned there with a small company and grew there unto a nation great, mighty [b]and full of people.
6 And the Egyptians vexed us, and troubled us, and laded us with cruel bondage.
7 But when we [c]cried unto the Lord God of our fathers, the Lord heard our voice, and looked on our adversity, and on our labor, and on our oppression:
8 And the Lord brought us out of Egypt in a mighty hand, and stretched out arm, with great terribleness, both in signs and wonders.
9 And he hath brought us into this place, and hath given us this land, even a land that floweth with milk and honey.
10 And now, lo, I have [d]brought the firstfruits of the land, which thou, O Lord, hast given me, and thou shalt set it before the Lord thy God, and worship before the Lord thy God:
32 [a]Now call to remembrance the days that are passed, in the which, after ye had received light ye endured a great fight in afflictions,
33 Partly while ye were made a [b]gazing stock both by reproaches and afflictions, and partly while ye became [c]companions of them which were so tossed to and fro.
34 For both ye sorrowed with me for my bonds, and suffered with joy the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves how that ye have in heaven a better, and an enduring [d]substance.
35 Cast not away therefore your confidence which hath great recompense of reward.
36 For ye have need of patience, that after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.
37 For yet a very [e]little while, and he that shall come, will come, and will not tarry.
38 (A)[f]Now the just shall live by faith: but if any withdraw himself, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
39 But we are not they which withdraw ourselves unto perdition, but follow faith unto the conservation of the soul.
