³⁴ Then Peter proceeded to speak and said,^[a] “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality.^{(A) 35} Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. ^36 [b]You know the word [that] he sent to the Israelites^[c] as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all,^{(B) 37} what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached,^{(C) 38} how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth^[d] with the holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.^{(D) 39} We are witnesses^[e] of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and [in] Jerusalem. The Gospel Teaching.^{[b] 1} Now I am reminding you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand. ² Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. ^3 [c]For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures;^{(A) 4} that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures;^{(B) 5} that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.^{(C) 6} After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. ⁷ After that he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. ⁸ Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me.^{(D) 9} For I am the least^[d] of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.^{(E) 10} But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been ineffective. Chapter 20^[a]

The Empty Tomb.^{[b] 1} On the first day of the week,^(A) Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark,^[c] and saw the stone removed from the tomb. ^{(B) 2} So she ran^[d] and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” ^3 [e]So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. ⁴ They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; ⁵ he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. ^6 (C)When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths^[f] there, ⁷ and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.^{(D) 8} Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. ^9 [g](E)For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead. ¹⁰ Then the disciples returned home.

The Appearance to Mary of Magdala.^{[h] 11} But Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping.^(F) And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb ¹² and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been. ¹³ And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.” ¹⁴ When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus.^{(G) 15} Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?”^(H) She thought it was the gardener and said to him, “Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him.” ¹⁶ Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni,”^[i] which means Teacher. ¹⁷ Jesus said to her, “Stop holding on to me,^[j] for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”^{(I) 18} Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and what he told her.

Chapter 16

The Resurrection of Jesus.^{[a] 1} When the sabbath was over,^(A) Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go and anoint him.^{(B) 2} Very early when the sun had risen, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb. ³ They were saying to one another, “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” ⁴ When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back; it was very large. ⁵ On entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe, and they were utterly amazed.^{(C) 6} He said to them, “Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold, the place where they laid him. ⁷ But go and tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.’”^{(D) 8} Then they went out and fled from the tomb, seized with trembling and bewilderment. They said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
