Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
7 (A)Restore us, O God of hosts;
let your face shine, that we may be saved!
8 You brought (B)a vine out of Egypt;
you (C)drove out the nations and planted it.
9 You (D)cleared the ground for it;
it took deep root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11 It sent out its branches to (E)the sea
and its shoots to (F)the River.[a]
12 Why then have you (G)broken down its walls,
so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?
13 (H)The boar from the forest ravages it,
and all that move in the field feed on it.
14 Turn again, O God of hosts!
(I)Look down from heaven, and see;
have regard for this vine,
15 the stock that your right hand planted,
and for the son whom you made strong for yourself.
14 (A)“Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant?
Why then has he become a prey?
15 (B)The lions have roared against him;
they have roared loudly.
They have made his land a waste;
his cities are in ruins, (C)without inhabitant.
16 Moreover, the men of (D)Memphis and (E)Tahpanhes
(F)have shaved[a] the crown of your head.
17 (G)Have you not brought this upon yourself
by forsaking the Lord your God,
when (H)he led you in the way?
18 (I)And now what do you gain by going to Egypt
to drink the waters of (J)the Nile?
(K)Or what do you gain by going to Assyria
to drink the waters of (L)the Euphrates?
19 (M)Your evil will chastise you,
and (N)your apostasy will reprove you.
Know and see that it is evil and (O)bitter
for (P)you to forsake the Lord your God;
the fear of me is not in you,
declares the Lord God of hosts.
20 “For long ago I (Q)broke your yoke
and burst your bonds;
but you said, (R)‘I will not serve.’
Yes, (S)on every high hill
and under every green tree
you bowed down (T)like a whore.
21 (U)Yet I planted you a choice vine,
wholly of pure seed.
(V)How then have you turned degenerate
and become a wild vine?
22 Though you wash yourself with lye
and use much soap,
(W)the stain of your guilt is still before me,
declares the Lord God.
Let No One Disqualify You
16 Therefore let no one (A)pass judgement on you (B)in questions of food and drink, or with regard to (C)a festival or (D)a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 (E)These are a shadow of the things to come, but (F)the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one (G)disqualify you, (H)insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, (I)going on in detail about visions,[a] (J)puffed up without reason by (K)his sensuous mind, 19 and (L)not (M)holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
20 If with Christ (N)you died to the (O)elemental spirits of the world, (P)why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 (Q)“Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 ((R)referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to (S)human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in (T)promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are (U)of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.
