Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
In You I Have Taken Refuge
A [a]Shiggaion of David, which he sang to Yahweh concerning the words of Cush, a Benjamite.
7 O Yahweh my God, (A)in You I have taken refuge;
Save me from all those who pursue me, and (B)deliver me,
2 Lest he tear [b]my soul (C)like a lion,
Rending me in pieces, while there is none to deliver.
3 O Yahweh my God, if I have done this,
If there is (D)injustice in my hands,
4 If I have (E)rewarded evil to him who [c]is at peace with me,
Or have (F)plundered my adversary without cause,
5 Let the enemy pursue [d]my soul and overtake [e]it;
And let him trample my life down to the ground
And cause my glory to dwell in the dust. [f]Selah.
6 (G)Arise, O Yahweh, in Your anger;
(H)Lift up Yourself against (I)the fury of my adversaries,
And (J)arouse Yourself [g]for me; You have appointed judgment.
7 Let the congregation of the (K)peoples encompass You,
And over [h]them return on high.
8 Yahweh (L)judges the peoples;
[i](M)Give justice to me, O Yahweh, according to my righteousness and my integrity that is in me.
9 O let (N)the evil of the wicked come to an end, but (O)establish the righteous;
For the righteous God (P)tests the hearts and [j]minds.
10 My (Q)shield is [k]with God,
Who (R)saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a (S)righteous judge,
And a God who has (T)indignation every day.
12 If [l]a man (U)does not repent, He will (V)sharpen His sword;
He has (W)bent His bow and prepared it.
13 He has also prepared [m]for Himself deadly weapons;
He makes His (X)arrows fiery shafts.
14 Behold, he travails with wickedness,
And he (Y)conceives mischief and gives birth to falsehood.
15 He has dug a pit and hollowed it out,
And has (Z)fallen into the hole which he made.
16 His (AA)mischief will return upon his own head,
And his (AB)violence will descend upon [n]his own skull.
7 “Now as for you, son of man, I have (A)given you as a watchman for the house of Israel; so you will hear a word from My mouth and give them (B)warning from Me. 8 When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will (C)surely die,’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require from your hand. 9 But as for you, if you on your part warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he (D)does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have (E)delivered your life.
10 “Now as for you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus you have spoken, saying, “Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we are (F)rotting away in them; (G)how then can we live?”’ 11 Say to them, ‘(H)As I live!’ declares Lord Yahweh, ‘I take (I)no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked (J)turn from his way and live. (K)Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?’ 12 Now as for you, son of man, say to the sons of your people, ‘The (L)righteousness of a righteous man will not deliver him in the day of his transgression, and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he will (M)not stumble because of it in the day when he turns from his wickedness; whereas a righteous man will not be able to live [a]by his righteousness on the day when he commits sin.’ 13 When I say to the righteous he will surely live, and he so trusts in his righteousness that he (N)does iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but in that same iniquity of his which he has done he will die. 14 But when I say to the wicked, ‘You will surely die,’ and he (O)turns from his sin and does (P)justice and righteousness, 15 if a wicked man restores a pledge, (Q)pays back what he has taken by robbery, walks by the (R)statutes of life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 (S)None of his sins that he has done will be remembered against him. He has done justice and righteousness; he shall surely live.
17 “Yet the sons of your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right,’ when it is their own way that is not right. 18 When the righteous turns from his righteousness and (T)does iniquity, then he shall die in [b]it. 19 But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does justice and righteousness, he will live by them. 20 Yet you say, ‘(U)The way of the Lord is not right.’ O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways.”
19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (A)the Son can do nothing from Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever [a]the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same manner. 20 (B)For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him (C)greater works than these, so that you will marvel. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and (D)gives them life, even so (E)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but (F)He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. (G)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and (H)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and (I)does not come into judgment, but has (J)passed out of death into life.
Two Resurrections
25 Truly, truly, I say to you, (K)an hour is coming and now is, when (L)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who (M)hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He (N)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to (O)execute judgment, because He is [b]the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for (P)an hour is coming, in which (Q)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come forth; (R)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
30 “(S)I can do nothing from Myself. As I hear, I judge; and (T)My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will, but (U)the will of Him who sent Me.
31 “(V)If I alone bear witness about Myself, My witness is not [c]true. 32 There is (W)another who bears witness about Me, and I know that the witness which He gives about Me is true.
Witnesses to Jesus: The Father and the Scriptures
33 You have sent to John, and he (X)has borne witness to the truth. 34 But (Y)the witness I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was (Z)the lamp that was burning and shining and you (AA)were willing to rejoice for [d]a while in his light. 36 But the witness I have is greater than the witness of John; for (AB)the works which the Father has given Me (AC)to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness about Me, that the Father (AD)has sent Me. 37 And the Father who sent Me, (AE)He has borne witness about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38 And you do not have (AF)His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He (AG)sent. 39 [e](AH)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is (AI)these that bear witness about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.
