Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
2 The Prophet David rejoiceth, that notwithstanding his enemies’ rage, yet God will continue his kingdom forever, and advance it even to the end of the world, 10 and therefore exhorteth kings and rulers, that they would humbly submit themselves under God’s yoke, because it is in vain to resist God. Herein is figured Christ’s kingdom.
1 Why do the [a]heathen (A)rage, and the people murmur in vain.
2 The kings of the earth band themselves, and the Princes are assembled together against the Lord, and against his [b]Christ.
3 [c]Let us break their bands, and cast their cords from us.
4 (B)But he that dwelleth in the heaven shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
5 [d]Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure, saying,
6 Even I have set my King upon Zion mine holy mountain.
7 I will declare the [e]decree: that is, the Lord hath said unto me, (C)Thou art my son; this [f]day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the [g]ends of the earth for thy possession.
9 (D)Thou shalt crush them with a scepter of iron, and break them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
10 [h]Be wise now therefore, ye kings: be learned ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord in fear, and rejoice in trembling.
12 [i]Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye [j]perish in the way, when his wrath shall suddenly burn. Blessed are all that trust in him.
9 And the Lord said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear while I talk with thee, and that they may also believe thee forever. (For Moses had told the words of the people unto the Lord.)
10 Moreover the Lord said unto Moses, Go to the people, and [a]sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes.
11 And let them be ready on the third day: for the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai:
12 And thou shalt set marks unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up to the mount, nor touch the border of it, whosoever toucheth the (A)mount, shall surely die.
13 No hand shall touch it, but he shall be stoned to death, or stricken through with darts: whether it be beast or man, he shall not live: when the [b]horn bloweth long, they shall come up [c]into the mountain.
14 ¶ Then Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes.
15 And he said unto the people, Be ready on the third day, and come not at your [d]wives.
16 And the third day, when it was morning, there was thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the sound of the trumpet exceeding loud, so that all the people that was in the camp was afraid.
17 Then Moses brought the people out of the tents to meet with God, and they stood in the nether part of the mount.
18 (B)And mount Sinai was all on smoke, because the Lord came down upon it in fire, and the smoke thereof ascended, as the smoke of a furnace, and all the mount [e]trembled exceedingly.
19 And when the sound of the trumpet blew long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by [f]voice.
20 (For the Lord came down upon mount Sinai on the top of the mount) and when the Lord called Moses up into the top of the mount, Moses went up.
21 Then the Lord said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, that they break not their bounds, to go up to the Lord to gaze, lest many of them perish.
22 And let the [g]Priests also which come to the Lord be sanctified, lest the Lord [h]destroy them.
23 And Moses said unto the Lord, The people cannot come up into the mount Sinai: for thou hast charged us, saying, Set marks on the mountain, and sanctify it.
24 And the Lord said unto him, Go, get thee down, and come up thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the [i]Priests and the people break their bounds to come up unto the Lord, lest he destroy them.
25 So Moses went down unto the people, and told them.
23 (A)[a] By faith Moses when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child, neither [b]feared they the king’s (B)commandment.
24 By faith (C)Moses when he was come to age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,
25 And chose rather to suffer adversity with the people of God, than to enjoy the [c]pleasures of sin for a season,
26 Esteeming the rebuke of Christ greater riches, than the treasures of Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward.
27 By faith he forsook Egypt, and feared not the fierceness of the king: for he endured, as he that saw him which is invisible.
28 Through faith he ordained the (D)Passover and the effusion of blood, lest he that destroyed the first born, should touch them.
