2 The Prophet David rejoiceth, that notwithstanding his enemies’ rage, yet God will continue his kingdom forever, and advance it even to the end of the world, 10 and therefore exhorteth kings and rulers, that they would humbly submit themselves under God’s yoke, because it is in vain to resist God. Herein is figured Christ’s kingdom.
1 Why do the [a]heathen (A)rage, and the people murmur in vain.
2 The kings of the earth band themselves, and the Princes are assembled together against the Lord, and against his [b]Christ.
3 [c]Let us break their bands, and cast their cords from us.
4 (B)But he that dwelleth in the heaven shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
5 [d]Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure, saying,
6 Even I have set my King upon Zion mine holy mountain.
7 I will declare the [e]decree: that is, the Lord hath said unto me, (C)Thou art my son; this [f]day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the [g]ends of the earth for thy possession.
9 (D)Thou shalt crush them with a scepter of iron, and break them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
10 [h]Be wise now therefore, ye kings: be learned ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord in fear, and rejoice in trembling.
12 [i]Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye [j]perish in the way, when his wrath shall suddenly burn. Blessed are all that trust in him.
2 Moreover God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the Lord,
3 And I appeared unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob by the Name of [a]Almighty God, but by my Name [b]Jehovah was I not known unto them.
4 Furthermore as I made my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers:
5 So I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage, and have remembered my covenant.
6 Wherefore say thou unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the burdens of the Egyptians, and will deliver you out of their bondage, and will redeem you in a stretched out arm, and in great [c]judgments.
7 Also I will [d]take you for my people, and will be your God: then ye shall know that I the Lord your God bring you out from the burdens of the Egyptians.
8 And I will bring you into the land which I [e]sware that I would give to Abraham, and to Isaac, and to Jacob, and I will give it unto you for a possession: I am the Lord.
9 ¶ So Moses told the children of Israel thus: but they hearkened [f]not unto Moses, for anguish of spirit and for cruel bondage.
8 1 To prove more certainly that the ceremonies of the Law are abrogated, 5 he showeth that they were appointed to serve the heavenly pattern. 8 He bringeth in the place of Jeremiah, 13 to prove the amendment of the old covenant.
1 Now [a]of the things which we have spoken, this is the sum, that we have such an high Priest, that sitteth at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heavens,
2 [b]And is a minister of the [c]Sanctuary, [d]and of that [e]true Tabernacle which the Lord pitched, and not man.
3 [f]For every high Priest is ordained to offer both gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it was of necessity, that this man should have somewhat also to offer.
4 [g]For he were not a Priest, if he were on the earth, seeing there are Priests that according to the Law offer gifts,
5 Who serve unto the pattern and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was warned by God when he was about to finish the Tabernacle. (A)See, said he, that thou make all things according to the pattern, showed to thee in the mount.
6 [h]But now our high Priest hath obtained a more excellent office, inasmuch as he is the Mediator of a better Testament, which is established upon better promises.
7 [i]For if that first Testament had been unblameable, no place should have been sought for the second.
