Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
43 1 He prayeth to be delivered from them that conspire against him, that he might joyfully praise God in his holy congregation.
1 Judge [a]me, O God, and defend my cause against the unmerciful [b]people: deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man.
2 For thou art the God of my strength: why hast thou put me away? why go I so mourning, when the enemy oppressed me?
3 Send thy [c]light and thy truth: let them lead me: let them bring me unto thine holy Mountain, and to thy Tabernacles.
4 Then [d]will I go unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness: and upon the harp will I give thanks unto thee, O God my God.
5 Why art thou cast down, my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me: [e]wait on God: for I will yet give him thanks, he is my present help and my God.
27 And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Did not I plainly appear unto the house of thy [a]father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?
28 And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my Priest, to offer upon my altar, and to burn incense, and to wear an Ephod before me, and (A)I gave unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel.
29 Wherefore have you [b]kicked against my sacrifice and mine offering, which I commanded in my Tabernacle, and honorest thy children above me, to make yourselves fat of the firstfruits of all the offerings of Israel my people?
30 Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said, that thine house, and the house of thy father should walk before me forever: but now the Lord saith, [c]It shall not be so: for them that honor me, I will honor, and they that despise me, shall be despised.
31 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine [d]arm, and the arm of thy fathers house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
32 And thou [e]shalt see thine enemy in the habitation of the Lord in all things wherewith God shall bless Israel, and there shall not be an old man in thine house forever.
33 Nevertheless, I will not destroy every one of thine from mine altar, to make thine eyes to fail, and to make thine heart sorrowful: and all the multitude of thine house shall [f]die when they be men.
34 And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die both.
35 And I will stir me up a [g]faithful Priest, that shall do according to mine heart, and according to my mind: and I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before mine Anointed forever.
36 And all that are left in thine house, shall come and [h]bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Appoint me, I pray thee, to one of the Priest’s offices, that I may eat a morsel [of] bread.
17 ¶ [a]Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the Law, and gloriest in God,
18 And knowest his will, and [b][c]triest the things that dissent from it, in that thou art instructed by the Law:
19 And persuadest thyself that thou art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
20 An instructor of them which lack discretion, a teacher of the unlearned, which hast the [d]form of knowledge, and of the truth in the [e]law.
21 Thou therefore, which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest, A man should not steal, dost thou steal?
22 Thou that sayest, A man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, committest thou sacrilege?
23 Thou that gloriest in the Law, through breaking the Law, dishonorest thou God?
24 For the Name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, (A)as it is written.
25 [f]For circumcision verily is profitable, if thou do the Law: but if thou be a transgressor of the Law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.
26 Therefore [g]if the uncircumcision keep the ordinances of the Law, shall not his [h]uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
27 And shall not [i]uncircumcision which is by nature (if it keep the Law) condemn thee which by the [j]letter and circumcision art a transgressor of the Law?
28 For he is not a Jew, which is one [k]outward: neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
29 But he is a Jew which is one within, and the circumcision is of the heart, in the [l]spirit, not in the letter, whose praise is not of men, but of God.
