Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
7 Because (A)for Your sake I have borne reproach;
(B)Dishonor has covered my face.
8 I have become (C)estranged [a]from my brothers
And an alien to my mother’s sons.
9 For (D)zeal for Your house has consumed me,
And (E)the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
10 When I wept (F)in my soul with fasting,
It became my reproach.
11 When I made (A)sackcloth my clothing,
I became (B)a byword to them.
12 Those who (C)sit in the gate talk about me,
And I am the [a](D)song of the drunkards.
13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord, (E)at an acceptable time;
O God, in the (F)greatness of Your lovingkindness,
Answer me with [b]Your saving truth.
14 Deliver me from the (G)mire and do not let me sink;
May I be (H)delivered from [c]my foes and from the [d](I)deep waters.
15 May the [e](J)flood of water not overflow me
Nor the deep swallow me up,
Nor the (K)pit shut its mouth on me.
18 Then they said, “Come and let us (A)devise plans against Jeremiah. Surely the (B)law is not going to be lost to the priest, nor (C)counsel to the sage, nor the divine (D)word to the prophet! Come on and let us (E)strike at him with our tongue, and let us (F)give no heed to any of his words.”
19 Do give heed to me, O Lord,
And listen to [a]what my opponents are saying!
20 (G)Should good be repaid with evil?
For they have (H)dug a pit for [b]me.
Remember how I (I)stood before You
To speak good on their behalf,
So as to turn away Your wrath from them.
21 Therefore, (J)give their children over to famine
And deliver them up to the [c]power of the sword;
And let their wives become (K)childless and (L)widowed.
Let their men also be smitten to death,
Their (M)young men struck down by the sword in battle.
22 May an (N)outcry be heard from their houses,
When You suddenly bring raiders upon them;
(O)For they have dug a pit to capture me
And (P)hidden snares for my feet.
23 Yet You, O Lord, know
All their [d]deadly designs against me;
(Q)Do not [e]forgive their iniquity
Or blot out their sin from Your sight.
But may they be [f](R)overthrown before You;
Deal with them in the (S)time of Your anger!
Imprisonment and Release
17 But the high priest rose up, along with all his associates (that is (A)the sect of (B)the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy. 18 They laid hands on the apostles and (C)put them in a public jail. 19 But during the night (D)an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and taking them out he said, 20 “Go, stand and [a]speak to the people in the temple [b](E)the whole message of this Life.” 21 Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple (F)about daybreak and began to teach.
Now when (G)the high priest and his associates came, they called (H)the [c]Council together, even all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent orders to the prison house for them to be brought. 22 But (I)the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported back, 23 saying, “We found the prison house locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we had opened up, we found no one inside.” 24 Now when (J)the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what [d]would come of this. 25 But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!” 26 Then (K)the captain went along with (L)the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for (M)they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).
