Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Lord’s Glory and Man’s Dignity.
For the choir director; on the Gittith. A Psalm of David.
8 O Lord, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name in all the earth,
Who have [a](A)displayed Your splendor above the heavens!
2 (B)From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established [b](C)strength
Because of Your adversaries,
To make (D)the enemy and the revengeful cease.
3 When I [c](E)consider (F)Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The (G)moon and the stars, which You have [d]ordained;
4 (H)What is man that You [e]take thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him?
5 Yet You have made him a (I)little lower than [f]God,
And (J)You crown him with (K)glory and majesty!
6 You make him to (L)rule over the works of Your hands;
You have (M)put all things under his feet,
7 All sheep and oxen,
And also the [g]beasts of the field,
8 The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,
Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
9 (N)O Lord, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name in all the earth!
22 “Have you entered the storehouses (A)of the snow,
Or have you seen the storehouses of the (B)hail,
23 Which I have reserved for the time of distress,
For the day of war and battle?
24 “Where is the way that (C)the light is divided,
Or the east wind scattered on the earth?
25 “Who has cleft a channel for the flood,
Or a way for the thunderbolt,
26 To bring (D)rain on a land without [a]people,
On a desert without a man in it,
27 To (E)satisfy the waste and desolate land
And to make the [b]seeds of grass to sprout?
28 “Has (F)the rain a father?
Or who has begotten the drops of dew?
29 “From whose womb has come the (G)ice?
And the frost of heaven, who has given it birth?
30 “Water [c]becomes hard like stone,
And the surface of the deep is imprisoned.
31 “Can you bind the chains of the (H)Pleiades,
Or loose the cords of Orion?
32 “Can you lead forth a [d]constellation in its season,
And guide the Bear with her [e]satellites?
33 “Do you know the (I)ordinances of the heavens,
Or fix their rule over the earth?
34 “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,
So that an (J)abundance of water will cover you?
35 “Can you (K)send forth lightnings that they may go
And say to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 “Who has (L)put wisdom in the innermost being
Or given (M)understanding to the [f]mind?
37 “Who can count the clouds by wisdom,
Or (N)tip the water jars of the heavens,
38 When the dust hardens into a mass
And the clods stick together?
15 “(A)If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
Role of the Spirit
16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another [a](B)Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is (C)the Spirit of truth, (D)whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
