Deuteronomy 32-34

32 (A)Give ear, O heavens, and let me speak;
And let the earth hear the words of my mouth.
(B)Let what I have learned drop as the rain,
My speech distill as the dew,
(C)As the droplets on the fresh grass
And as the showers on the herb.
(D)For I proclaim the name of Yahweh;
(E)Ascribe greatness to our God!
(F)The Rock! His work is [a]perfect,
(G)For all His ways are [b]just;
(H)A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and upright is He.
[c](I)They have acted corruptly toward Him,
They are not His children because of their defect;
(J)But are a perverse and crooked generation.
Do you thus (K)repay Yahweh,
(L)O people who are wickedly foolish and without wisdom?
(M)Is not He your Father who has bought you?
(N)He has made you and established you.
Remember the ancient days,
Consider the years from generation to generation.
(O)Ask your father, and he will declare to you,
Your elders, and they will speak to you.
(P)When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance,
When He separated the sons of [d]man,
He set the boundaries of the peoples
(Q)According to the number of the [e]sons of Israel.
(R)For Yahweh’s portion is His people;
Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.
10 (S)He found him in a desert land,
And in the howling waste of a wilderness;
He encircled him; He cared for him;
He guarded him as (T)the pupil of His eye.
11 (U)Like an eagle that stirs up its nest,
That hovers over its young,
(V)He spread His wings and caught them;
He carried them on His pinions.
12 (W)Yahweh alone guided him,
(X)And there was no foreign god with him.
13 (Y)He made him ride on the high places of the earth,
And he ate the produce of the field;
(Z)And He made him suck honey from the rock,
And (AA)oil from the flinty rock,
14 Curds of cows, and milk of the flock,
With fat of lambs,
And rams, the breed of Bashan, and goats,
(AB)With the finest of the wheat—
And of the (AC)blood of grapes you drank wine.

15 (AD)But [f]Jeshurun grew fat and kicked—
You grew fat, thick, and sleek—
(AE)Then he abandoned God (AF)who made him,
And treated (AG)the Rock of his salvation with wicked foolishness.
16 (AH)They made Him jealous with strange gods;
(AI)With abominations they provoked Him to anger.
17 (AJ)They sacrificed to demons who were not God,
(AK)To gods whom they have not known,
(AL)New gods who came lately,
Whom your fathers did not dread.
18 You neglected (AM)the Rock who begot you,
(AN)And forgot the God who brought you forth.

19 (AO)And Yahweh saw this and spurned them
(AP)Because of the provocation of His sons and daughters.
20 Then He said, ‘I will hide My face from them;
(AQ)I will see what their end shall be;
(AR)For they are a perverse generation,
(AS)Sons in whom is no faithfulness.
21 (AT)They have made Me jealous with what is not God;
They have provoked Me to anger with their [g](AU)idols.
(AV)So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people;
I will provoke them to anger with a wickedly foolish nation,
22 (AW)For a fire is kindled in My anger,
And it burns to the lowest part of Sheol,
(AX)And it consumes the earth with its produce,
And it sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

23 (AY)I will heap calamities on them;
(AZ)I will exhaust My arrows on them.
24 (BA)They will be wasted by famine, and consumed by [h]plague
(BB)And bitter destruction;
(BC)And the teeth of beasts I will send upon them,
(BD)With the venom of crawling things of the dust.
25 (BE)Outside the sword will bereave,
And inside terror—
(BF)Both choice man and virgin,
The nursing baby with the man of gray hair.
26 I would have said, “(BG)I will cut them to pieces;
(BH)I will cause the memory of them to cease from men,”
27 Had I not feared the provocation by the enemy,
Lest their adversaries misjudge,
Lest they say, “(BI)Our hand is [i]triumphant,
And Yahweh has not done all this.”’

28 (BJ)For they are a nation where counsel perishes,
And there is no discernment in them.
29 (BK)Would that they were wise, that they had insight into this,
(BL)That they would understand their [j]future!
30 (BM)How could one pursue one thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their (BN)Rock had sold them,
And Yahweh had handed them over?
31 Indeed their rock is not like our Rock,
(BO)Even our enemies [k]themselves judge this.
32 For their vine is from the vine of Sodom,
And from the fields of Gomorrah;
Their grapes are grapes of (BP)poison,
Their clusters, bitter.
33 Their wine is the venom of [l]serpents,
And the [m]deadly poison of cobras.

34 (BQ)Is it not laid up in store with Me,
Sealed up in My treasuries?
35 (BR)Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,
(BS)In due time their foot will stumble;
(BT)For the day of their disaster is near,
And the impending things are hastening upon them.’
36 (BU)For Yahweh will render justice to His people,
(BV)And will have compassion on His slaves,
When He sees that their [n]strength is gone,
And there is none remaining, bond or free.
37 And He will say, ‘(BW)Where are their gods,
The rock in which they sought refuge?
38 (BX)Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offering?
(BY)Let them rise up and help you,
Let them be your hiding place!
39 (BZ)See now that I, I am He,
(CA)And there is no god besides Me;
(CB)It is I who put to death and give life.
(CC)I have wounded, and it is I who heal,
(CD)And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
40 Indeed, (CE)I lift up My hand to heaven,
And say, as I live forever,
41 (CF)If I sharpen My [o]flashing sword,
And My hand takes hold on judgment,
(CG)I will render vengeance on My adversaries,
And I will repay those who hate Me.
42 (CH)I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
(CI)And My sword will devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the long-haired [p]leaders of the enemy.’
43 (CJ)O nations, cause His people to shout for joy;
(CK)For He will avenge the blood of His slaves,
(CL)And He will render vengeance on His adversaries,
(CM)And He will atone for His land and His people.”

44 Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he and [q](CN)Joshua the son of Nun. 45 Then Moses finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 and he said to them, “(CO)Place in your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you shall command (CP)your sons to be careful to do, even all the words of this law. 47 For it is not an idle word for you; indeed (CQ)it is your life. And (CR)by this word you will prolong your days in the land, [r]which you are about to cross the Jordan to [s]possess.”

Moses to Go Up Mount Nebo

48 (CS)And Yahweh spoke to Moses that very same day, saying, 49 (CT)Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab [t]opposite Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession. 50 Then die on the mountain where you ascend, and be (CU)gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, 51 (CV)because you both acted unfaithfully with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the (CW)wilderness of Zin, because you both did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel. 52 (CX)For you shall see the land at a distance, but (CY)you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving the sons of Israel.”

The Blessing of Moses

33 Now this is the blessing with which Moses (CZ)the man of God blessed the sons of Israel before his death. And he said,

(DA)Yahweh came from Sinai,
(DB)And He [u]dawned on them from Seir;
(DC)He shone forth from Mount Paran,
And He came from (DD)the [v]midst of ten thousand holy ones;
(DE)At His right hand there was [w]flashing lightning for them.
(DF)Indeed, He loves [x]the people;
(DG)All [y]Your holy ones are in Your hand,
(DH)And they [z]followed in Your steps;
Everyone is bearing up Your words.
(DI)Moses commanded us with a law,
(DJ)A possession for the assembly of Jacob.
(DK)And He was king in Jeshurun,
When the heads of the people were gathered,
The tribes of Israel together.

(DL)May Reuben live and not die,
Nor his men be few.”

(DM)And this regarding Judah; so he said,

“Hear, O Yahweh, the voice of Judah,
And bring him to his people.
With his hands he contended for [aa]them,
And may You be a help against his adversaries.”

Of Levi he said,

Let Your (DN)Thummim and Your Urim belong to [ab]Your (DO)holy one,
(DP)Whom You tested at Massah,
[ac]With whom You contended at the waters of Meribah;
(DQ)Who said of his father and his mother,
‘I did not consider them’;
And he did not recognize his brothers,
Nor did he know his own sons,
For (DR)they kept Your word,
And they observed Your covenant.
10 (DS)They shall [ad]teach Your judgments to Jacob,
And Your law to Israel.
(DT)They shall put incense [ae]before You,
And (DU)whole burnt offerings on Your altar.
11 O Yahweh, bless his substance,
And accept the work of his hands;
Crush the loins of those who rise up against him,
And those who hate him, so that they will not rise again.”

12 Of Benjamin he said,

(DV)May the beloved of Yahweh dwell in security by Him,
(DW)Who shields him all the day,
(DX)And he dwells between His shoulders.”

13 Of Joseph he said,

(DY)Blessed of Yahweh be his land,
With the choice things of heaven, with the dew,
And from the deep lying beneath,
14 And with the choice produce of the sun,
And with the choice yield of the months,
15 And with the [af]best things of (DZ)the ancient mountains,
And with the choice things of the everlasting hills,
16 And with the choice things of the earth and its fullness,
And the favor (EA)of Him who dwelt in the bush.
Let it come to the head of Joseph,
And to the top of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.
17 As the firstborn of his ox, splendor is his,
And his horns are the horns of (EB)the wild ox;
With them he will (EC)push the peoples,
All [ag]at once, to the ends of the earth.
And those are the ten thousands of Ephraim,
And those are the thousands of Manasseh.”

18 (ED)Of Zebulun he said,

“Be glad, Zebulun, in your going forth,
And, Issachar, in your tents.
19 (EE)They will call peoples to the mountain;
There they will offer (EF)righteous sacrifices;
For they will [ah]draw out (EG)the abundance of the seas,
And the hidden treasures of the sand.”

20 (EH)Of Gad he said,

“Blessed is the one who enlarges Gad;
He lies down (EI)as a [ai]lion,
And tears the arm, also the top of the head.
21 (EJ)Then he [aj]provided the first part for himself,
(EK)For there the ruler’s portion was [ak]reserved;
(EL)And he came with the heads of the people;
(EM)He did the righteousness of Yahweh,
And His judgments with Israel.”

22 (EN)Of Dan he said,

“Dan is (EO)a lion’s whelp,
That leaps forth from Bashan.”

23 Of Naphtali he said,

(EP)O Naphtali, satisfied with favor,
And full of the blessing of Yahweh,
Take possession of the sea and the south.”

24 (EQ)Of Asher he said,

“More blessed than sons is Asher;
May he be favored by his brothers,
(ER)And may he dip his foot in oil.
25 (ES)Your locks will be iron and bronze,
(ET)And according to your days, so your fortitude will be.

26 (EU)There is none like the God of [al]Jeshurun,
(EV)Who rides the heavens [am]to your help,
And through the skies in His majesty.
27 (EW)The eternal God is a [an]dwelling place,
(EX)And underneath are the everlasting arms;
(EY)And He drove out the enemy from before you,
(EZ)And said, ‘Destroy!’
28 (FA)So Israel dwells in security,
(FB)The fountain of Jacob secluded,
(FC)In a land of grain and new wine;
(FD)His heavens also drop down dew.
29 (FE)Blessed are you, O Israel;
(FF)Who is like you, a people saved by Yahweh,
(FG)Who is the shield of your help
(FH)And the sword of your majesty!
(FI)So your enemies will cower before you,
(FJ)And you will tread upon their high places.”

The Death of Moses

34 (FK)Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And Yahweh (FL)showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the [ao](FM)western sea, and the [ap]Negev and the plain in the valley of Jericho, (FN)the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then Yahweh said to him, “This is the land which (FO)I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your seed’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.” So Moses (FP)the servant of Yahweh (FQ)died there in the land of Moab, according to the [aq]command of Yahweh. And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, (FR)opposite Beth-peor; but (FS)no man knows his burial place to this day. Now Moses was (FT)120 years old when he died; (FU)his eye was not dim, nor his vigor abated. So the sons of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.

Now Joshua the son of Nun was (FV)filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as Yahweh had commanded Moses. 10 (FW)And there has not yet arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom (FX)Yahweh knew face to face, 11 [ar]in regard to all the signs and wonders which Yahweh sent him to do in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land, 12 and [as]in regard to all the mighty [at]power and [au]in regard to all the great terror which Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

Mark 15:26-47

26 And the inscription of the charge against Him [a]read, “(A)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

27 And they *crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28 [b][And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”] 29 And those passing by were blaspheming Him, (B)shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (C)destroy the [c]sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way, mocking Him to one another, the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were saying, “(D)He saved others; [d]He cannot save Himself. 32 Let this [e]Christ, (E)the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (F)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

33 (G)And when the [f](H)sixth hour came, darkness [g]fell over the whole land until the [h](I)ninth hour. 34 And at the (J)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, (K)Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 And when some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Look, He is calling for Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “[i]Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.” 37 (L)And Jesus, uttering a loud cry, breathed His last. 38 (M)And the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 (N)And when the centurion, who was standing [j]right in front of Him, saw [k]the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!”

40 (O)And there were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James (P)the [l]Less and Joses, and (Q)Salome, 41 who, when He was in Galilee, were following Him and [m](R)serving Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 (S)And when evening had already come, because it was [n](T)Preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (U)prominent [o]Council member, who himself was (V)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (W)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 And Pilate wondered if He had died by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He already died. 45 And ascertaining this from (X)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 And when Joseph had bought a linen cloth and took Him down, he wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (Y)And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He had been laid.
