Old/New Testament
Lament over Tyre
27 Moreover, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 2 “Now as for you, son of man, (A)take up a lamentation over Tyre 3 and say to Tyre, (B)who inhabits the [a]entrance to the sea, a (C)trader of the peoples to many coastlands, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,
“O Tyre, you have said, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’
4 Your borders are in the heart of the seas;
Your builders have perfected your beauty.
5 They have [b]made all your planks of fir trees from (D)Senir;
They have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
6 Of (E)oaks from (F)Bashan they have made your oars;
With ivory they have [c]inlaid your deck of boxwood from the coastlands of (G)Cyprus.
7 Your [d]sail was of fine embroidered linen from Egypt
So that it became your [e]standard;
Your [f]awning was [g](H)blue and purple from the coastlands of (I)Elishah.
8 The inhabitants of Sidon and (J)Arvad were your rowers;
Your (K)wise men, O Tyre, were [h]aboard; they were your pilots.
9 The elders of (L)Gebal and her wise men were with you repairing your seams;
All the ships of the sea and their sailors were with you in order to deal in your merchandise.
10 “(M)Persia and (N)Lud and (O)Put were in your military force, your men of war. They hung shield and helmet in you; they set forth your majesty. 11 The sons of Arvad and your military force were on your walls, all around, and the [i]Gammadim were in your towers. They hung their small shields on your walls all around; they perfected your beauty.
12 “Tarshish was your customer because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth; with silver, iron, tin, and lead they paid for your wares. 13 (P)Javan, (Q)Tubal, and (R)Meshech, they were your traders; with the (S)lives of men and vessels of bronze they paid for your merchandise. 14 Those from (T)Beth-togarmah gave horses and war horses and mules for your wares. 15 The sons of (U)Dedan were your traders. Many coastlands were [j]customers at your hand; (V)ivory tusks and ebony they brought as your payment. 16 (W)Aram was your customer because of the abundance of your [k]goods; they paid for your wares with (X)emeralds, purple, (Y)embroidered work, fine linen, coral, and rubies. 17 Judah and the land of Israel, they were your traders; with the wheat of (Z)Minnith, [l]cakes, honey, oil, and balm they paid for your merchandise. 18 (AA)Damascus was your customer because of the abundance of your [m]goods, because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth, because of the wine of Helbon and white wool. 19 Also Vedan and Javan paid for your wares [n]from Uzal; wrought iron, cassia, and [o]sweet cane were among your merchandise. 20 (AB)Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21 (AC)Arabia and all the princes of Kedar, they were [p]customers at your hand for (AD)lambs, rams, and goats; for these, they were your customers. 22 The traders of (AE)Sheba and Raamah, they traded with you; they paid for your wares with the best of all kinds of (AF)spices and with all kinds of precious stones and gold. 23 Haran, Canneh, (AG)Eden, the traders of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24 They traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of [q]blue and embroidered work, and in carpets of many colors and tightly wound cords, which were among your merchandise. 25 The (AH)ships of Tarshish were [r]the carriers for your merchandise.
And you were filled and were very [s]glorious
In the heart of the seas.
26 “Your rowers have brought you
Into (AI)great waters;
The (AJ)east wind has broken you
In the heart of the seas.
27 Your wealth, your wares, your merchandise,
Your sailors and your pilots,
Your repairers of seams, your dealers in merchandise,
And all your men of war who are in you,
With all your assembly that is in your midst,
Will fall into the heart of the seas
On the day of your downfall.
28 At the sound of the cry of your pilots
The pasture lands will (AK)shake.
29 All who handle the oar,
The (AL)sailors and all the pilots of the sea,
Will come down from their ships;
They will stand on the land,
30 And they will (AM)make their voice heard over you
And will cry bitterly.
They will (AN)cast dust on their heads;
They will (AO)wallow in ashes.
31 Also they will make themselves (AP)bald for you
And (AQ)gird themselves with sackcloth;
And they will (AR)weep for you in bitterness of soul
With bitter mourning.
32 Moreover, in their wailing they will take up a (AS)lamentation for you
And lament over you:
‘Who is like Tyre,
Like her who is silent in the midst of the sea?
33 When your wares went out from the seas,
You satisfied a great number of peoples;
With the (AT)greatness of your wealth and your merchandise
You enriched the kings of earth.
34 [t]Now that you are (AU)broken by the seas
In the depths of the waters,
Your (AV)merchandise and all your assembly
Have fallen in the midst of you.
35 All the (AW)inhabitants of the coastlands
Are appalled at you,
And their kings are horribly horrified;
They are troubled in countenance.
36 The merchants among the peoples (AX)hiss at you;
You have become [u]terrified,
And you (AY)will cease to be forever.’”’”
Prophesy Against the King of Tyre
28 The word of Yahweh came again to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,
“Because your heart is lofty
And you have said, ‘(AZ)I am a god;
I sit enthroned in the seat of [v]gods
In the heart of the seas’;
Yet you are a (BA)man and not God,
Although you make your heart like the heart of God—
3 Behold, you are wiser than (BB)Daniel;
There is no secret that is a match for you.
4 By your wisdom and understanding
You have acquired (BC)wealth for yourself
And have acquired gold and silver for your treasuries.
5 By your great wisdom, by your (BD)trade
You have increased your wealth,
And your (BE)heart is lofty because of your wealth—
6 Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh,
‘Because you have (BF)made your heart
Like the heart of God,
7 Therefore, behold, I will bring (BG)strangers upon you,
The (BH)most ruthless of the nations.
And they will draw their swords
Against the beauty of your wisdom
And defile your splendor.
8 They will bring you down to the pit,
And you will die the (BI)death of those who are slain
In the heart of the seas.
9 Will you still say, “I am a god,”
In the presence of the one who kills you,
Though you are a man and not God,
In the hands of those who slay you?
10 You will die the death of the (BJ)uncircumcised
By the hand of strangers,
For I have spoken!’ declares Lord Yahweh!”’”
Lament over the King of Tyre
11 Again the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 12 “Son of man, (BK)take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,
“You [w]had the seal of perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in (BL)Eden, the garden of God;
(BM)Every precious stone was your covering:
The (BN)ruby, the topaz, and the diamond;
The beryl, the onyx, and the jasper;
The [x]lapis lazuli, the turquoise, and the emerald;
And the gold, the workmanship of your [y](BO)settings and [z]sockets,
Was in you.
On the day that you were created
They were prepared.
14 You were the (BP)anointed cherub who [aa]covers,
And I placed you there.
You were on the holy (BQ)mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the (BR)stones of fire.
15 You were (BS)blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until (BT)unrighteousness was found in you.
16 By the (BU)abundance of your trade
[ab]You were internally (BV)filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, O [ac]covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was lofty because of your (BW)beauty;
You (BX)corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I put you before (BY)kings,
That they may see you.
18 By the abundance of your iniquities,
In the unrighteousness of your trade
You profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought out (BZ)fire from the midst of you;
It has consumed you,
And I have turned you to (CA)ashes on the earth
In the eyes of all who see you.
19 All who know you among the peoples
Are appalled at you;
You have become [ad](CB)terrified,
And you will cease to be (CC)forever.”’”
Prophesy Against Sidon
20 And the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 21 “Son of man, (CD)set your face toward (CE)Sidon, prophesy against her 22 and say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,
“Behold, I am against you, O Sidon,
And I will [ae]be glorified in your midst.
Then they will know that I am Yahweh when I (CF)execute judgments in her,
And I will manifest My holiness in her.
23 For (CG)I will send pestilence to her
And blood to her streets,
And the (CH)wounded will [af]fall in her midst
By the sword upon her on every side;
Then they will know that I am Yahweh.
24 And there will be no more for the house of Israel a (CI)prickling brier or a painful thorn from any round about them who scorned them; then they will know that I am Lord Yahweh.”
Israel Regathered
25 ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “When I (CJ)gather the house of Israel from the peoples, among whom they are scattered, and will manifest My holiness in them in the sight of the nations, then they will (CK)live in their [ag]land which I gave to My servant Jacob. 26 They will (CL)live in it securely; and they will (CM)build houses, plant vineyards, and live securely when I (CN)execute judgments upon all who scorn them all around them. Then they will know that I am Yahweh their God.”’”
Prophesy Against Egypt
29 In the (CO)tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against (CP)Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and against all (CQ)Egypt. 3 Speak and say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,
“Behold, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
The great [ah](CR)monster that lies in the midst of his canals of the Nile,
That (CS)has said, ‘My Nile is mine, and I myself have made it.’
4 I will put (CT)hooks in your jaws
And make the fish of your canals of the Nile cling to your scales.
And I will bring you up out of the midst of your canals of the Nile,
And all the fish of your canals of the Nile will cling to your scales.
5 I will (CU)abandon you to the wilderness, you and all the fish of your canals of the Nile;
You will fall on the [ai]open field; you will not be brought together or [aj](CV)gathered.
I have given you for (CW)food to the beasts of the earth and to the birds of the sky.
6 Then all the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am Yahweh
Because they have been only a (CX)staff made of reed to the house of Israel.
7 When they seized you with the hand,
You (CY)tore and split open all their [ak]shoulders;
And when they leaned on you,
You broke and made all their loins [al]quake.”
8 ‘Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I will (CZ)bring upon you a sword, and I will cut off from you man and beast. 9 The (DA)land of Egypt will become a desolation and waste. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.
Because [am]you (DB)said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I have made it,’ 10 therefore, behold, I am (DC)against you and against your canals of the Nile, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene and even to the border of [an]Ethiopia. 11 A man’s foot will (DD)not pass through it, and the foot of a beast will not pass through it, and it will not be inhabited for forty years. 12 So I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the (DE)midst of desolated lands. And her cities, in the midst of cities that are laid waste, will be desolate forty years; and I will (DF)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands.”
13 ‘For thus says Lord Yahweh, “At the end of forty years I will (DG)gather the Egyptians from the peoples [ao]among whom they were scattered. 14 I will return the fortunes of Egypt and make them return to the land of (DH)Pathros, to the land of their origin, and there they will be a lowly kingdom. 15 It will be the (DI)lowest of the kingdoms, and it will never again lift itself up above the nations. And I will make them so small that they will not (DJ)have dominion over the nations. 16 And it will never again be the (DK)security of the house of Israel, (DL)bringing to remembrance the iniquity of their having turned to go after Egypt. Then they will know that I am Lord Yahweh.”’”
17 Now in the (DM)twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 18 “Son of man, (DN)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his military force [ap]labor hard against Tyre; every head was made (DO)bald, and every shoulder was rubbed bare. But he and his military force had no wages from Tyre for the [aq]labor that he had [ar]labored against it.” 19 Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I (DP)will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. And he will carry off her [as](DQ)abundance and capture her spoil and seize her plunder; and it will be wages for his military force. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt for his work which he [at](DR)labored because they acted for Me,” declares Lord Yahweh.
21 “On that day I will make a (DS)horn sprout for the house of Israel, and I will [au](DT)open your mouth in their midst. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.”
Wives and Husbands
3 (A)In the same way, you wives, (B)be subject to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be (C)won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 as they observe your pure conduct with fear. 3 (D)Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on garments; 4 but let it be (E)the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible quality of a lowly and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. 5 For in this way in former times the holy women also, (F)who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being subject to their own husbands, 6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, (G)calling him lord. You have become her children if you do good, [a](H)not fearing any intimidation.
7 (I)You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker (J)vessel, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
8 [b]Now to sum up, (K)all of you be like-minded, sympathetic, (L)brotherly, (M)tender-hearted, and (N)humble in spirit; 9 (O)not returning evil for evil or (P)reviling for reviling, but [c]giving a (Q)blessing instead, for (R)you were called for the very purpose that you might (S)inherit a blessing. 10 For,
“(T)The one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
11 (U)He must turn away from evil and do good;
He must seek peace and pursue it.
12 (V)For the eyes of the [d]Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears attend to their prayer,
But the face of the [e]Lord is against those who do evil.”
Suffering for Righteousness
13 (W)And who is [f]there to [g]harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should (X)suffer for the sake of righteousness, (Y)you [h]are blessed. (Z)And do not fear their fear, and do not be troubled, 15 but [i]sanctify (AA)Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready (AB)to make [j]a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the (AC)hope that is in you, yet (AD)with gentleness and (AE)fear, 16 having a (AF)good conscience so that in the thing in which (AG)you are slandered, those who disparage your good conduct in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For (AH)it is better, (AI)if [k]God should will it so, that you suffer for doing good rather than for doing wrong. 18 For (AJ)Christ also suffered for sins (AK)once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, so that He might (AL)bring you to God, having been put to death (AM)in the flesh, but made alive (AN)in the [l]spirit; 19 in [m]which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 20 who once were disobedient, when the (AO)patience of God (AP)kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of (AQ)the ark, in which a few, that is, (AR)eight (AS)persons, were brought safely through the [n]water. 21 (AT)Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—(AU)not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal [o]of a (AV)good conscience to God—through (AW)the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 (AX)who is at the right hand of God, (AY)having gone into heaven, (AZ)after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.
