An Oracle Concerning Egypt

19 The [a](A)oracle concerning (B)Egypt.

Behold, Yahweh is (C)riding on a swift cloud and is about to come to Egypt;
The (D)idols of Egypt will shake at His presence,
And the (E)heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.
“So I will incite Egyptians against Egyptians;
And they will (F)each fight against his brother and each against his neighbor,
City against city and kingdom against kingdom.
Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be emptied to destruction within them;
And I will confuse their counsel,
So that (G)they will seek idols and ghosts of the dead
And to [b]mediums and spiritists.
Moreover, I will deliver the Egyptians into the hand of a (H)cruel master,
And a [c]strong king will rule over them,” declares the Lord, Yahweh of hosts.

(I)The waters from the sea will dry up,
And the river will be parched and dry.
The (J)rivers will emit a stench,
The [d](K)streams of Egypt will thin out and dry up;
(L)The reeds and rushes will rot away.
The bulrushes by the (M)Nile, by the [e]edge of the Nile
And all the sown fields by the Nile
Will become dry, be driven away, and be no more.
And the (N)fishermen will lament,
And all those who cast a [f]line into the Nile will mourn,
And those who spread nets on the waters will [g]languish.
Moreover, the manufacturers of linen made from combed flax
And the weavers of white (O)cloth will be ashamed.
10 And [h]the (P)pillars of Egypt will be crushed;
All the hired laborers will be grieved in soul.

11 The princes of [i](Q)Zoan are merely ignorant fools;
The counsel of Pharaoh’s wisest counselors has become [j]senseless.
How can you men say to Pharaoh,
“I am a son of the (R)wise, a son of the kings of old”?
12 Well then, where are your wise men?
Please let them tell you,
And let them [k]understand what Yahweh of hosts
Has (S)counseled against Egypt.
13 The princes of [l]Zoan have acted as ignorant fools,
The princes of (T)Memphis are deluded;
Those who are the (U)cornerstone of her tribes
[m]Have led Egypt astray.
14 Yahweh has mixed within her a spirit of (V)distortion;
(W)They have led Egypt astray in all [n]that it does,
As a (X)drunken man [o]strays into his vomit.
15 There will be no work for Egypt
(Y)Which its head or tail, its palm branch or bulrush, may do.

Yahweh Will Bless Egypt, Assyria, and Israel

16 In that day the Egyptians will become like women, and they will tremble and be in (Z)dread because of the (AA)waving of the hand of Yahweh of hosts, which He is going to wave over them. 17 And the land of Judah will become a [p]terror to Egypt; everyone [q]to whom it is mentioned will be in dread of it because of the (AB)counsel of Yahweh of hosts which He is counseling against them.

To (A)Egypt, concerning the military force of (B)Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was by the Euphrates River at (C)Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck down in the (D)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

(E)Arrange the shield and large shield,
And draw near for the battle!
Harness the horses,
And [a]mount the steeds,
And take your stand with helmets on!
(F)Polish the spears,
Put on the (G)scale-armor!
Why have I seen it?
They are shattered;
They are (H)drawing back,
And their (I)mighty men are crushed
And have fled to refuge,
Without facing back;
[b](J)Terror is on every side!”
Declares Yahweh.
Let not the (K)swift man flee,
Nor the mighty man escape;
In the north beside the river Euphrates
They have (L)stumbled and fallen.
Who is this that (M)rises like the Nile,
Like the rivers whose waters toss about?
Egypt rises like the Nile,
Even like the rivers whose waters toss about;
And He has said, “I will (N)rise and cover that land;
I will surely (O)cause the city to perish, as well as its inhabitants.”
Go up, you horses, and [c](P)drive madly, you chariots,
That the mighty men may go forth:
[d]Ethiopia and [e](Q)Put, who seize the shield,
And the [f](R)Lydians, who seize and bend the bow.
10 Indeed, (S)that day belongs to Lord Yahweh of hosts,
A day of (T)vengeance, so as to avenge Himself on His adversaries;
And the (U)sword will devour and be satiated
And [g]drink its fill of their blood;
For there will be a (V)sacrifice to Lord Yahweh of hosts
In the land of the north by the river Euphrates.
11 Go (W)up to Gilead and obtain balm,
(X)O virgin daughter of Egypt!
In vain have you multiplied [h]remedies;
There is (Y)no healing for you.
12 The nations have heard of your (Z)disgrace,
And the earth is full of your (AA)outcry;
For one (AB)warrior has stumbled over [i]another,
And both of them have fallen down together.

13 This is the [j]message which Yahweh spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the (AC)coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to (AD)strike down the land of Egypt:

14 “Declare in Egypt and cause it to be heard in (AE)Migdol;
Cause it to be heard also in Memphis and (AF)Tahpanhes;
Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,
For the (AG)sword has devoured those around you.’
15 Why are your (AH)mighty ones thrown down?
They do not stand because Yahweh has (AI)thrust them down.
16 They have repeatedly (AJ)stumbled;
Indeed, they have fallen one against another.
Then they said, ‘Rise up! And (AK)let us return
To our own people and land of our birth
Away from the [k](AL)sword of the oppressor.’
17 [l]They called out there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is but (AM)a rumbling;
He has let the appointed time pass by!’
18 As I live,” declares the (AN)King
Whose name is Yahweh of hosts,
“Surely one shall come who looms up like (AO)Tabor among the mountains,
Or like (AP)Carmel by the sea.
19 Make your baggage ready for (AQ)exile,
O inhabitant of the (AR)daughter of Egypt,
For (AS)Memphis will become a desolation;
It will even be turned into ruin and without inhabitants.
20 Egypt is a pretty (AT)heifer,
But a [m]horsefly is coming (AU)from the north—it is coming!
21 Also her (AV)mercenaries in her midst
Are like [n]fattened (AW)calves,
For even they have turned back and have fled away together;
They did not stand their ground.
For the day of their disaster has come upon them,
The time of their (AX)punishment.
22 Its sound moves along like a serpent;
For they move on [o]like a military force
And come to her as woodcutters with axes.
23 They have cut down her (AY)forest,” declares Yahweh;
“Surely it will no longer be searched out,
Even though [p]they are now more numerous than (AZ)locusts
And are without number.
24 The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,
Given over to the hand of the (BA)people of the north.”

25 Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of (BB)Thebes, and (BC)Pharaoh, and Egypt along with her (BD)gods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who (BE)trust in him. 26 I shall give them into the hand of those who are (BF)seeking their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his servants. (BG)Afterwards, however, it will be dwelt in like in the days of old,” declares Yahweh.

Those Who Support Egypt Will Fall

30 The word of Yahweh came again to me saying, “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

(A)Wail, ‘Alas for the day!’
For the day is near,
Even (B)the day of Yahweh is near;
It will be a day of (C)clouds,
A time of doom for the nations.
A sword will come upon Egypt,
And anguish will be in [a]Ethiopia;
When the slain fall in Egypt,
They (D)take away her multitude,
And her foundations are pulled down.

[b]Ethiopia, Put, Lud, all [c](E)Arabia, [d]Libya, and the [e]people of the land [f]that is in covenant will fall with them by the sword.”

‘Thus says Yahweh,

“Indeed, those who support (F)Egypt will fall,
And the pride of her strength will come down;
From Migdol to Syene
They will fall within her by the sword,”
Declares Lord Yahweh.
“They will be desolate
In the (G)midst of the desolated lands;
And her cities will be
In the midst of the cities laid waste.
And they will (H)know that I am Yahweh,
When I set a (I)fire in Egypt
And all her helpers are broken.

On that day (J)messengers will go forth from Me in ships to frighten (K)secure [g]Ethiopia; and (L)anguish will be on them as on the day of Egypt; for behold, it is coming!”

10 ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

(M)I will also make the multitude of Egypt cease
By the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
11 He and his people with him,
(N)The most ruthless of the nations,
Will be brought in to make the land a ruin;
And they will draw their swords against Egypt
And fill the land with the slain.
12 Moreover, I will make the (O)canals of the Nile dry
And (P)sell the land into the hands of evil men.
And I will make the land desolate,
As well as its fullness,
By the hand of strangers; I, Yahweh, have spoken.”

13 ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“I will also (Q)destroy the idols
And make the [h]images cease from [i](R)Memphis.
And there will no longer be a prince in the land of Egypt;
And I will put fear in the land of Egypt.
14 I will make (S)Pathros desolate,
Set a fire in (T)Zoan,
And execute judgments on [j](U)Thebes.
15 I will pour out My wrath on [k]Sin,
The strong defense of Egypt;
I will also cut off the multitude of [l]Thebes.
16 I will set a fire in Egypt;
[m]Sin will writhe in anguish;
[n]Thebes will be breached,
And [o]Memphis will have [p]distresses daily.
17 The choice men of [q](V)On and of Pi-beseth
Will fall by the sword,
And [r]the women will go into captivity.
18 In (W)Tehaphnehes the day will [s]be (X)dark
When I (Y)break there the bars of the yoke of Egypt.
Then the pride of her strength will cease in her;
A cloud will cover her,
And her daughters will go into captivity.
19 Thus I will (Z)execute judgments on Egypt,
And they will know that I am Yahweh.”’”

Yahweh Scatters the Egyptians

20 In the (AA)eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 21 “Son of man, I have (AB)broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and behold, it has not been (AC)bound up to be given healing [t]or wrapped with a bandage, that it may be strong to seize the sword. 22 Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘Behold, I am (AD)against Pharaoh king of Egypt and will break his arms, both the strong and the (AE)broken; and I will make the sword (AF)fall from his hand. 23 I will (AG)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands. 24 For I will (AH)strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put (AI)My sword in his hand; and I will break the arms of Pharaoh so that he will groan before him with the groanings of a wounded man. 25 Thus I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fall. Then they will know that I am Yahweh, when I put My sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he (AJ)stretches it out against the land of Egypt. 26 When I scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands, then they will know that I am Yahweh.’”

Egypt Will Be Brought Down to Sheol

31 Now it happened in the (AK)eleventh year, in the third month, on the first of the month, that the word of Yahweh came to me saying, “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his (AL)multitude,

‘To whom do you liken yourself in your greatness?
Behold, Assyria was a (AM)cedar in Lebanon
With beautiful branches and forest shade
And (AN)lofty in height,
And its top was among the [u]clouds.
The (AO)waters made it grow; the [v]deep made it high.
With its rivers it was going all around its planting place
And sent out its conduits to all the trees of the field.
Therefore (AP)its height was loftier than all the trees of the field,
And its boughs became many and its branches long
Because of (AQ)many waters [w]as it spread them out.
All the (AR)birds of the sky nested in its boughs,
And under its branches all the beasts of the field gave birth,
And all great nations lived under its shade.
So it was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its foliage;
For its [x]roots extended to many waters.
The (AS)cedars in (AT)God’s garden [y]could not match it;
The [z]cypresses [aa]could not liken themselves with its boughs,
And the plane trees were not like its branches.
No tree in (AU)God’s garden [ab]could liken itself with it in its beauty.
I made it beautiful with the multitude of its foliage,
And all the trees of (AV)Eden, which were in the (AW)garden of God, were jealous of it.

10 ‘Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, “Because [ac]it is lofty in height and has put its top among the [ad]clouds, and its (AX)heart is high up in its loftiness, 11 therefore I will give it into the hand of a [ae](AY)dominant one of the nations; he will thoroughly deal with it. According to its wickedness I have (AZ)driven it away. 12 (BA)Strangers—(BB)ruthless ones of the nations have cut it down and abandoned it; on the (BC)mountains and in all the valleys its foliage have fallen, and its boughs have been broken in all the ravines of the land. And all the peoples of the earth have (BD)gone down from its shade and abandoned it. 13 On its downfall all the (BE)birds of the sky will dwell, and all the beasts of the field will be on its fallen branches 14 so that all the trees by the waters may not be lofty in their height, nor put their top among the [af]clouds, nor their dominant ones—all the [ag]well-watered ones—stand in their loftiness. For they have all been given over to death, to the (BF)earth beneath, among the sons of men, with those who go down to the pit.”

15 ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “On the day when it went down to Sheol I (BG)caused mourning; I covered it with the [ah]deep over it and held back its rivers. And its many waters were stopped up, and I made Lebanon [ai]mourn for it, and all the trees of the field wilted away on account of it. 16 I made the nations (BH)quake at the sound of its downfall when I made it (BI)go down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of (BJ)Lebanon, all the [aj]well-watered ones, were (BK)comforted in the earth beneath. 17 They also (BL)went down with it to Sheol to those who were (BM)slain by the sword; and those who were its [ak]strength lived (BN)under its shade among the nations.

18 “To which among the trees of Eden do you thus liken yourself in glory and greatness? Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth beneath; you will lie in the midst of the (BO)uncircumcised, with those who were slain by the sword. (BP)So is Pharaoh and all his multitude!”’ declares Lord Yahweh.”

A Lament over Pharaoh and Egypt

32 And it happened in the (BQ)twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first of the month, that the word of Yahweh came to me saying, “Son of man, take up a (BR)lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him,

‘You liken yourself to a young (BS)lion of the nations,
Yet you are like the (BT)monster in the seas;
And you (BU)burst forth in your rivers
And muddied the waters with your feet
And [al]fouled their rivers.’”

Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“So I will (BV)spread My net over you
With an assembly of many peoples,
And they shall bring you up in My net.
I will abandon you on the land;
I will hurl you on the [am]open field.
And I will cause all the (BW)birds of the sky to dwell on you,
And I will satisfy the beasts of the whole earth [an]with you.
I will put your flesh (BX)on the mountains
And fill the valleys with your refuse.
I will also make the land drink the discharge of your (BY)blood
As far as the mountains,
And the ravines will be full of you.
And when I (BZ)extinguish you,
I will (CA)cover the heavens and darken their (CB)stars;
I will cover the (CC)sun with a cloud,
And the moon will not give its light.
All the shining (CD)lights in the heavens
I will darken over you
And will give darkness on your land,”
Declares Lord Yahweh.

“I will also (CE)vex the hearts of many peoples when I (CF)bring your destruction among the nations, into lands which you have not known. 10 I will make many peoples [ao](CG)appalled at you, and their kings will be horribly afraid of you when I brandish My sword before them; and (CH)they will tremble every moment, every man for his own life, on the day of your downfall.”

11 For (CI)thus says Lord Yahweh, “The sword of the king of Babylon will come upon you. 12 By the swords of the mighty ones I will cause your multitude to fall; all of them are (CJ)ruthless ones of the nations,

And they will (CK)devastate the lofty pride of Egypt,
And all its multitude will be destroyed.
13 I will also make all its cattle perish from beside many waters;
And (CL)the foot of man will not muddy them anymore,
And the hoofs of beasts will not muddy them.
14 Then I will make their waters settle
And will cause their rivers to [ap]run like oil,”
Declares Lord Yahweh.
15 “When I make the land of Egypt a (CM)desolation,
And the land is desolate of its fullness,
When I strike all those who inhabit it,
Then they shall (CN)know that I am Yahweh.

16 This is a (CO)lamentation, and they shall [aq]lament over it. The daughters of the nations shall [ar]lament over it. Over Egypt and over all her multitude they shall [as]lament over it,” declares Lord Yahweh.

17 Now it happened in the (CP)twelfth year, on the (CQ)fifteenth of the month, that the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 18 “Son of man, (CR)wail for the hordes of Egypt and (CS)bring it down, her and the daughters of the powerful nations, to the (CT)nether world, with those who go down to the pit;

19 ‘Whom do you surpass in beauty?
Go down and make your bed with the (CU)uncircumcised.’

20 They shall fall in the midst of those who are slain by the sword. [at]She is given over to the sword; they have (CV)drawn her and all her multitude away. 21 The [au](CW)dominant among the mighty ones shall speak of him and his helpers from the midst of Sheol, ‘They have gone down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.’

22 (CX)Assyria is there and all her assembly; [av]her graves are round about [aw]her. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword, 23 whose (CY)graves are put in the remotest parts of the pit, and her assembly is all round about her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword, who put terror in the land of the living.

24 (CZ)Elam is there and all her multitude all around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised to the (DA)lower parts of the earth, who put their terror in the (DB)land of the living and (DC)bore their dishonor with those who went down to the pit. 25 They have put a (DD)bed for her among the slain with all her multitude. Her graves are all around it; all of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword (although their terror was put in the land of the living), and they bore their dishonor with those who go down to the pit; [ax]they were put in the midst of the slain.

26 (DE)Meshech, (DF)Tubal, and all their multitude are there; their graves are all around them. All of them were slain by the sword (DG)uncircumcised, though they put their terror in the land of the living. 27 (DH)Nor do they lie beside the fallen (DI)mighty ones of the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war and whose swords were put under their heads; but the punishment for their (DJ)iniquity rested on their bones, though the terror of these mighty ones was once in the land of the living. 28 But as for you, in the midst of the uncircumcised you will be broken and lie with those slain by the sword.

29 “There also is (DK)Edom, its kings, and all its [ay]princes, who [az]for all their might are put with those slain by the sword; they will lie with the uncircumcised and with those who go down to the pit.

30 “There also are the [ba]chiefs of the (DL)north, all of them, and all the (DM)Sidonians, who in spite of the terror resulting from their might, in shame went down with the slain. So they lay down uncircumcised with those slain by the sword and bore their dishonor with those who go down to the pit.

31 “These Pharaoh will see, and he will be (DN)comforted for all his multitude slain by the sword, even Pharaoh and all his military force,” declares Lord Yahweh. 32 “Though I put a terror of him in the land of the living, yet he will be made to lie down among the uncircumcised along with those slain by the sword, even Pharaoh and all his hordes,” declares Lord Yahweh.
