The Nazirite Vow

Again Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When a man or woman makes a [a]special vow, the vow of (A)a [b]Nazirite, to dedicate himself as a Nazirite to Yahweh, he shall (B)abstain as a Nazirite from wine and strong drink; he shall drink no vinegar, whether made from wine or strong drink, nor shall he drink any grape juice nor eat fresh or dried grapes. All the days of his [c]Nazirite vow he shall not eat anything that is produced by the grape vine, from the seeds even to the skin.

‘All the days of his vow as a Nazirite (C)no razor shall pass over his head. He shall be holy until the days are fulfilled for which he dedicated himself as a Nazirite to Yahweh; he shall let the locks of hair on his head grow long.

(D)All the days of his dedication as a Nazirite to Yahweh he shall not go near to a dead person. He (E)shall not defile himself for his father or for his mother, for his brother or for his sister, when they die, because the Nazirite vow to his God is on his head. All the days of his Nazirite vow he is holy to Yahweh.

‘But if a man dies very suddenly beside him and he defiles the head of hair during his Nazirite vow, then (F)he shall shave his head on the day when he becomes clean; (G)he shall shave it on the seventh day. 10 Then on the eighth day he shall bring (H)two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest, to the doorway of the tent of meeting. 11 And the priest shall offer (I)one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering and make atonement for him [d]concerning his sin because of the dead person. And that same day he shall set apart his head as holy, 12 and shall dedicate to Yahweh the days of his [e]Nazirite vow and shall bring a male lamb a year old for a guilt offering; but the former days will be void because his Nazirite vow was defiled.

13 ‘Now this is the law of the Nazirite (J)when the days of his Nazirite vow are fulfilled: he shall bring [f]the offering to the doorway of the tent of meeting. 14 And he shall bring his offering near to Yahweh: one male lamb a year old without blemish for a burnt offering and one (K)ewe-lamb a year old without blemish for a sin offering and one ram without blemish for a peace offering, 15 and a basket of (L)unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil and unleavened wafers spread with oil, along with (M)their grain offering and their drink offering. 16 Then the priest shall bring them near before Yahweh and shall offer his sin offering and his burnt offering. 17 He shall also offer with the ram a sacrifice of peace offerings to Yahweh, together with the basket of unleavened cakes; the priest shall likewise offer its grain offering and its drink offering. 18 (N)The Nazirite shall then shave the head of hair for his Nazirite vow at the doorway of the tent of meeting and take the hair of his head of his Nazirite vow and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of peace offerings. 19 (O)And the priest shall take the ram’s shoulder when it has been boiled, and one unleavened cake out of the basket and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them on the [g]hands of the Nazirite after he has shaved the hair of his Nazirite vow. 20 Then the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before Yahweh. It is holy for the priest, together with the breast offered by waving and the thigh offered by [h]raising up; and (P)afterward the Nazirite may drink wine.’

21 “This is the law of the Nazirite who vows his offering to Yahweh according to his Nazirite vow, in addition to what else [i]he can afford; according to his vow which he takes, so he shall do according to the law of his Nazirite vow.”

Yahweh Blesses the Sons of Israel

22 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘Thus (Q)you shall bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them:

24 Yahweh (R)bless you, and (S)keep you;

25 Yahweh (T)make His face shine on you,
And (U)be gracious to you;

26 Yahweh (V)lift up His [j]face on you,
And (W)give you peace.’

27 So they shall [k](X)invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and I then will bless them.”

Psalm 40-41

The One Who Rescues Me

For the choir director. Of David. A Psalm.

40 I (A)hoped [a]earnestly for Yahweh;
And He inclined to me and (B)heard my cry for help.
He brought me up out of the (C)pit of destruction, out of the [b]miry clay,
And (D)He set my feet upon a high rock, (E)He established my steps.
He put a (F)new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will (G)see and fear
And will trust in Yahweh.

How (H)blessed is the man who has made Yahweh his trust,
And (I)has not [c]turned to the proud, nor to those who (J)stray into falsehood.
Many, O Yahweh my God, are (K)the wondrous deeds You have done,
And Your (L)thoughts toward us;
There is none to compare with You.
I would declare and speak of them,
But they (M)are too numerous to recount.

[d](N)Sacrifice and meal offering [e]You have not desired;
My ears You have [f]opened;
Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.
Then I said, “Behold, I come;
In the scroll of the book it is [g]written of me.
(O)I desire to do Your will, O my God;
(P)Your law is within my inner being.”

I (Q)proclaim good news of righteousness in the great assembly;
Behold, I do (R)not restrain my lips,
O Yahweh, (S)You know.
10 I do (T)not conceal Your righteousness within my heart;
I (U)speak of Your faithfulness and Your salvation;
I do not hide Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly.

11 You, O Yahweh, will not withhold Your compassion from me;
[h]Your (V)lovingkindness and Your truth will continually guard me.
12 For evils beyond number have (W)surrounded me;
My (X)iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see;
They are (Y)more numerous than the hairs of my head,
And my (Z)heart has [i]failed me.

13 (AA)Be pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me;
Make (AB)haste, O Yahweh, to help me.
14 Let those be (AC)ashamed and humiliated together
Who (AD)seek my [j]life to sweep it away;
Let those be turned back and dishonored
Who delight in [k]evil against me.
15 Let those (AE)be [l]appalled because of their shame
Who (AF)say to me, “Aha, aha!”
16 (AG)Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
Let those who love Your salvation (AH)say continually,
“Yahweh be magnified!”
17 As for me, (AI)I am afflicted and needy,
[m](AJ)May the Lord think of me.
You are my help and the One who rescues me;
Do not delay, O my God.

O Yahweh, Be Gracious to Me

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

41 How blessed is he who (AK)considers the [n]poor;
Yahweh will provide him escape (AL)in a day of [o]calamity.
Yahweh will (AM)keep him and keep him alive,
And he shall be (AN)blessed upon the earth;
And (AO)do not give him over to the desire of his enemies.
Yahweh will sustain him upon his sickbed;
In his illness, You [p]restore him to health.

As for me, I said, “O Yahweh, be gracious to me;
(AP)Heal my soul, for (AQ)I have sinned against You.”
My enemies (AR)speak evil against me,
“When will he die, and his name perish?”
And [q]when he comes to see me, he (AS)speaks [r]worthlessness;
His heart gathers wickedness to itself;
When he goes outside, he speaks it.
All who hate me whisper together against me;
Against me, they (AT)devise for me [s]calamity, saying,
“A vile thing is poured out [t]upon him,
That when he lies down, he will (AU)not rise up again.”
Even my (AV)close friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread,
Has lifted up his heel against me.

10 But You, O Yahweh, be gracious to me and (AW)raise me up,
That I may repay them.
11 By this I know that (AX)You delight in me,
Because (AY)my enemy makes no shout in triumph over me.
12 As for me, (AZ)You uphold me in my integrity,
And You make me (BA)stand firm in Your presence forever.

13 (BB)Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.

Song of Songs 4

Solomon Praises the Beauty of His Bride

[a]Behold, you are beautiful, (A)my darling,
Behold, you are beautiful!
Your (B)eyes are like doves (C)behind your veil;
Your (D)hair is like a flock of goats
That have leapt down from Mount (E)Gilead.
Your (F)teeth are like a flock of newly shorn ewes
Which have come up from their washing,
All of which bear twins,
And not one among them has [b]lost her young.
Your lips are like a (G)scarlet thread,
And your (H)mouth is lovely.
Your (I)temples are like a slice of a pomegranate
Behind your veil.
Your (J)neck is like the tower of David,
Built [c]with rows of stones
On which are (K)hung one thousand shields,
All the small (L)shields of the mighty men.
Your (M)two breasts are like two fawns,
Twins of a gazelle
Which [d](N)feed among the lilies.
(O)Until the day breathes
And the shadows flee,
I will go my way to the mountain of (P)myrrh
And to the hill of (Q)frankincense.

(R)You are altogether beautiful, my darling,
And there is no blemish in you.
Come with me from (S)Lebanon, my (T)bride,
May you come with me from Lebanon.
[e]Journey down from the top of (U)Amana,
From the top of (V)Senir and Hermon,
From the dens of lions,
From the mountains of leopards.
You have made my heart beat faster, (W)my sister, my bride;
You have made my heart beat faster with a single glance of your eyes,
With a single strand of your (X)necklace.
10 (Y)How beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride!
How much (Z)better is your love than wine,
And the (AA)fragrance of your oils
Than all kinds of [f]spices!
11 Your lips, my bride, (AB)drip (AC)honey from the comb;
Honey and milk are under your tongue,
And the fragrance of your garments is like the (AD)fragrance of Lebanon.
12 A garden locked is my sister, my bride,
A [g]rock garden locked, a (AE)spring (AF)sealed up.
13 Your shoots are [h]an (AG)orchard of (AH)pomegranates
With (AI)choice fruits, (AJ)henna with nard plants,
14 (AK)Nard and saffron, calamus and (AL)cinnamon,
With all the trees of (AM)frankincense,
(AN)Myrrh and aloes, along with all the finest [i]spices.
15 You are a garden spring,
A well of [j](AO)fresh water,
And streams flowing from Lebanon.”

16 [k]Awake, O north wind,
And come, wind of the south;
Make my (AP)garden breathe out fragrance,
Let its [l]spices flow forth.
May (AQ)my beloved come into his garden
And eat its (AR)choice fruits!”

Hebrews 4

The Believer’s Rest

Therefore, let us fear, lest, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have (A)fallen short of it. For indeed we have had good news proclaimed to us, just as they also; but (B)the word [a]that was heard did not profit those [b]who were not united with faith among those who heard. For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,

(C)As I swore in My wrath,
They shall not enter My rest,”

although His works were finished (D)from the foundation of the world. For He has spoken (E)somewhere in this way concerning the seventh day: “(F)And God (G)rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this passage, “(H)They shall not enter My rest.” Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news proclaimed to them failed to enter because of (I)disobedience, He again determines a certain day, “Today,” saying [c]through David after so long a time just (J)as has been said before,

(K)Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

For (L)if [d]Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also (M)rested from his works, as (N)God did from His. 11 Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall into the same (O)example of (P)disobedience. 12 For (Q)the word of God is (R)living and (S)active and sharper than any two-edged (T)sword, and piercing as far as the division of (U)soul and (V)spirit, of both joints and marrow, and (W)able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And (X)there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are [e](Y)uncovered and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom we have an account to give.

Jesus Our Great High Priest

14 Therefore, since we have a great (Z)high priest who has (AA)passed through the heavens, Jesus (AB)the Son of God, let us take hold of our (AC)confession. 15 For we do not have (AD)a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been (AE)tempted in all things like we are, yet (AF)without sin. 16 Therefore let us (AG)draw near with (AH)confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
