The Census of Israel’s Warriors
1 Then [a]Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on (A)the first of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2 “(B)Take a [b]census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head 3 from (C)twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall [c]number them by their armies. 4 With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, (D)each one head of his father’s household. 5 These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you:
(E)of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
6 of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;
7 of Judah, (F)Nahshon the son of Amminadab;
8 of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;
9 of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;
10 of the sons of Joseph:
of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud;
of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
11 of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;
12 of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;
13 of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;
14 of Gad, Eliasaph the son of (G)Deuel;
15 of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.
16 These are they who were (H)called upon by the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes; they were the (I)heads of [d]divisions of Israel.”
17 So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, 18 and they assembled all the congregation together on the (J)first of the second month. Then they registered by (K)genealogy in their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head, 19 just as (L)Yahweh had commanded Moses. So he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.
20 (M)Now the sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 21 their numbered men of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500.
22 (N)Of the sons of Simeon, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, their numbered men, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, (O)whoever was able to go out to war, 23 their numbered men of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.
24 (P)Of the sons of Gad, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 25 their numbered men of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.
26 (Q)Of the sons of Judah, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 27 their numbered men of the tribe of Judah were 74,600.
28 (R)Of the sons of Issachar, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 29 their numbered men of the tribe of Issachar were 54,400.
30 (S)Of the sons of Zebulun, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 31 their numbered men of the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400.
32 (T)Of the sons of Joseph, namely, of the sons of Ephraim, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 33 their numbered men of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500.
34 (U)Of the sons of Manasseh, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 35 their numbered men of the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200.
36 (V)Of the sons of Benjamin, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 37 their numbered men of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400.
38 (W)Of the sons of Dan, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 39 their numbered men of the tribe of Dan were 62,700.
40 (X)Of the sons of Asher, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 41 their numbered men of the tribe of Asher were 41,500.
42 (Y)Of the sons of Naphtali, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 43 their numbered men of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.
44 These are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each of whom was of his father’s household. 45 So all the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers’ households, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war in Israel, 46 even all the numbered men were (Z)603,550.
Levites Not Numbered in the Census
47 (AA)The Levites, however, were not numbered among them by their fathers’ tribe. 48 Yahweh had spoken to Moses, saying, 49 “Only the tribe of Levi (AB)you shall not number, nor shall you take their [e]census among the sons of Israel. 50 But you shall (AC)appoint the Levites over the [f]tabernacle of the testimony and over all its furnishings and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall attend to it; they shall also camp around the tabernacle. 51 (AD)So when the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encamps, the Levites shall set it up. But (AE)the [g]layman who comes near shall be put to death. 52 (AF)And the sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own standard, according to their armies. 53 (AG)But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony so that there will be (AH)no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel. (AI)So the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.” 54 Thus the sons of Israel did; according to all which Yahweh had commanded Moses, so they did.
Yahweh Be Magnified

35 Contend, O Yahweh, with those who (A)contend with me;
Fight against those who (B)fight against me.
2 Take hold of [a](C)shield and large shield
And rise up for (D)my help.
3 Draw also the spear and [b]the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me;
Say to my soul, “I am (E)your salvation.”
4 Let those be (F)ashamed and dishonored who seek my [c]life;
Let those who devise evil against me be (G)turned back and humiliated.
5 Let them be (H)like chaff before the wind,
With the angel of Yahweh driving them on.
6 Let their way be dark and (I)slippery,
With the angel of Yahweh pursuing them.
7 For (J)without cause they (K)hid their net for me;
Without cause they dug a [d]pit for my soul.
8 Let (L)destruction, which he does not know, come upon him,
And (M)let the net, which he hid, catch him;
Let him fall into it in (N)destruction.
9 And my soul shall (O)rejoice in Yahweh;
It shall (P)be joyful in His salvation.
10 All my (Q)bones will say, “Yahweh, (R)who is like You,
Who delivers the afflicted from him (S)who is too strong for him,
And (T)the afflicted and the needy from him who robs him?”
11 (U)Malicious witnesses rise up,
Who ask me of things that I do not know.
12 They (V)repay me evil for good,
It is bereavement to my soul.
13 But as for me, (W)when they were sick, my (X)clothing was sackcloth;
I (Y)humbled my soul with fasting,
And my (Z)prayer kept returning to my bosom.
14 I walked about as though it were my friend or brother;
I (AA)bowed down [e]mourning, as one who sorrows for a mother.
15 But (AB)at my [f]stumbling they were glad and gathered themselves together;
The [g](AC)smiters whom I did not know gathered together against me,
They (AD)tore at me and never were silent.
16 Amongst the godless jesters at a feast,
They (AE)gnashed at me with their teeth.
17 Lord, (AF)how long will You look on?
Bring back my soul (AG)from their ravages,
My (AH)only life from the lions.
18 I will (AI)give You thanks in the great assembly;
I will (AJ)praise You among a mighty people.
19 (AK)Let those who are wrongfully (AL)my enemies not be glad over me;
Nor let those (AM)who hate me without cause [h](AN)wink maliciously.
20 For they do not speak peace,
But they devise (AO)deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.
21 They (AP)opened their mouth wide against me;
They said, “(AQ)Aha, aha, our eyes have seen it!”
22 (AR)You have seen it, O Yahweh, (AS)do not keep silent;
O Lord, (AT)do not be far from me.
23 (AU)Stir up Yourself, and awake to my justice
And to my cause, my God and my Lord.
24 (AV)Judge me, O Yahweh my God, according to Your righteousness,
And (AW)do not let them be glad over me.
25 Do not let them say in their heart, “(AX)Aha, our desire!”
Do not let them say, “We have (AY)swallowed him up!”
26 Let (AZ)those be ashamed and humiliated altogether who are glad at the evil done to me;
Let those be (BA)clothed with shame and dishonor who (BB)magnify themselves over me.
Cast Your Bread on the Waters
11 (A)Cast your bread on the surface of the waters, for you (B)will find it [a]after many days. 2 (C)Divide your portion to seven, or even to eight, for you do not know what (D)calamity may occur on the earth. 3 If the clouds are full, they empty the rain upon the earth; and whether a tree falls toward the south or toward the north, wherever the tree falls, there it [b]lies. 4 He who [c]watches the wind will not sow, and he who looks at the clouds will not reap. 5 Just as you do not (E)know [d]the path of the wind and (F)how bones are formed in the womb of the [e]pregnant woman, so you do not (G)know the work of God who works all things.
6 Sow your seed (H)in the morning and do not put your hands down in the evening, for you do not know whether [f]morning or evening sowing will succeed, or whether both of them alike will be good.
7 The light is sweet, and it is good for the eyes to (I)see the sun. 8 Indeed, if a man should live many years, let him (J)be glad in them all, and let him remember the (K)days of darkness, for they will be many. Everything that is to come will be vanity.
9 Be glad, young man, during your childhood, and let your heart be merry during the days of young manhood. And walk in the ways of your heart and in the (L)sights of your eyes. Yet know that (M)God will bring you to judgment for all these things. 10 So, remove vexation from your heart and put away (N)evil from your flesh because childhood and the prime of life are vanity.
Be Ready for Every Good Work
3 (A)Remind them (B)to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be (C)ready for every good work, 2 to slander no one, (D)to be peaceable, (E)considerate, (F)demonstrating all gentleness to all men. 3 (G)For we ourselves also once were foolish, (H)disobedient, (I)deceived, (J)enslaved to (K)various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in (L)malice and (M)envy, despicable, hating one another. 4 But when the (N)kindness and affection of (O)God our Savior (P)appeared, 5 (Q)He saved us, (R)not by works which we did in righteousness, but (S)according to His mercy, through the (T)washing of regeneration and (U)renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 (V)whom He poured out upon us (W)richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that having been justified by His grace, we would become (X)heirs [a]according to the hope of eternal life. 8 (Y)This is a trustworthy saying. And concerning these things I (Z)want you to speak confidently, so that those who have (AA)believed God will be intent to (AB)lead in good works. These things are good and profitable for men. 9 But (AC)avoid (AD)foolish controversies and (AE)genealogies and strife and (AF)conflicts about the Law, for they are (AG)unprofitable and worthless. 10 (AH)Reject a (AI)factious man (AJ)after a first and second warning, 11 knowing that such a man is (AK)perverted and is sinning, being self-condemned.

12 When I send Artemas or (AL)Tychicus to you, (AM)be diligent to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to (AN)spend the winter there. 13 Diligently help send Zenas the (AO)lawyer and (AP)Apollos on their way so that nothing is lacking for them. 14 (AQ)And our people must also learn to (AR)lead in good [b]works to meet (AS)pressing needs, so that they will not be (AT)unfruitful.
15 (AU)All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us (AV)in the faith.
