56 Be gracious to me, O God, for man has ^[d](A)trampled upon me;
All day long, an attacker ^(B)oppresses me.

³ Then they would have ^(A)swallowed us alive,
When their ^(B)anger was kindled against us;

¹² Let us ^(A)swallow them alive like Sheol,
And whole, as those who ^(B)go down to the pit;

¹⁶ All ^(A)your enemies
Have opened their mouths wide against you;
They hiss and ^(B)gnash their teeth.
They say, “We have ^(C)swallowed her up!
Surely this is the ^(D)day for which we have hoped;
We have found it, we have seen it.”
