Laws for Burnt Offerings

Then[a] Yahweh called to Moses and spoke to him from the tent of assembly, saying, “Speak to the Israelites,[b] and say to them, ‘When a person[c] from you presents an offering to Yahweh, you shall present your offering from domestic animals, from the cattle[d] or from the flock.[e] If his offering is a burnt offering from the cattle,[f] then he must present[g] an unblemished male; he must present it at the door of the tent of assembly for his acceptance before[h] Yahweh.

“‘He[i] must lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering and it will be accepted[j] for him in order to make atonement for him. He[k] must slaughter the young bull[l] before[m] Yahweh, then[n] Aaron’s sons, the priests, will present the blood and sprinkle the blood all around the altar that is at the door of the tent of assembly. Then[o] he must remove the skin of the burnt offering and cut it into its pieces. The sons of[p] Aaron the priest will put fire on the altar and arrange the wood on the fire. Then[q] Aaron’s sons, the priests, will arrange the pieces of meat,[r] the head, and the suet on the wood that is on the fire that is on the altar. Then[s] he must wash its inner parts[t] and its lower leg bones with water, and the priest will turn into smoke the whole animal on the altar as a burnt offering by fire, as an appeasing fragrance for Yahweh.

10 “‘But if his offering is from the flock,[u] from the sheep or from the goats for a burnt offering, he must present[v] an unblemished[w] male. 11 He[x] must slaughter it on the north side of the altar before[y] Yahweh; then[z] Aaron’s sons, the priests, will sprinkle its blood all around the altar. 12 Then[aa] he must cut it into pieces along with its head and its suet; and the priest will arrange them on the wood that is on the fire that is on the altar. 13 Then[ab] he must wash the inner parts[ac] and the lower leg bones with water and the priest shall present the whole animal and will turn it[ad] into smoke on the altar; it is a burnt offering by fire as an appeasing fragrance for Yahweh.

14 “‘But if his offering for Yahweh is a burnt offering from the birds, then he must present his offering from the turtledoves or from the young doves.[ae] 15 The priest[af] will present it at the altar and must wring off its head and turn it into smoke on the altar, and its blood will be drained out on the wall[ag] of the altar. 16 He[ah] must remove its crop with its plumage and throw it to the east beside the altar on the place of the fatty ashes. 17 Then[ai] he must tear it apart by its wings but must not sever it; then[aj] the priest will turn it into smoke on the altar. It is a burnt offering by fire as an appeasing fragrance for Yahweh.’”

Jesus Is Raised

20 Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it[a] was still dark, and saw the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord from the tomb and we do not know where they have put him!” Then Peter and the other disciple went out and were going to the tomb. And the two were running together, and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came to the tomb first. And bending over to look, he saw the strips of linen cloth lying there, though he did not go in. Then Simon Peter also came following him, and he went into the tomb and saw the strips of linen cloth lying there, and the facecloth that was on his head—not lying with the strips of linen cloth, but folded up separately in one place. So then the other disciple who had come to the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed. (For they did not yet know the scripture that it was necessary for him to rise from the dead.)

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.[b] 11 But Mary stood outside at the tomb, weeping. Then, while she was weeping, she bent over to look into the tomb, 12 and she saw two angels in white, seated one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13 And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him!” 14 When she[c] had said these things, she turned around[d] and saw Jesus standing there, and she did not know that it was Jesus.

15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?” She thought that it was the gardener, and[e] said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned around and[f] said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni” (which means “Teacher”). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene came and[g] announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 Now when it[h] was evening on that day—the first day of the week—and the doors had been shut where the disciples were because of fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace to you.” 20 And when he[i] had said this, he showed his[j] hands and his[k] side to them. Then the disciples rejoiced when they[l] saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you.” 22 And when he[m] had said this, he breathed on them[n] and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them. If you retain the sins[o] of any, they are retained.”

Thomas Doubts But Later Believes

24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, who was called Didymus,[p] was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe!”

26 And after eight days his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Although[q] the doors had been shut, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said, “Peace to you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Place your finger here and see my hands, and place your hand and put it[r] into my side. And do not be unbelieving, but believing!” 28 Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, have you believed? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

Why This Book Was Written

30 Now Jesus also performed many other signs in the presence of the disciples[s] which are not recorded in this book, 31 but these things are recorded in order that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by[t] believing you may have life in his name.

Proverbs 17

17 Better a dry morsel and quiet with it
    than a house filled with feasts of strife.
A slave who deals wisely will rule over a child who acts shamefully,
    and in the midst of brothers he will share his inheritance.
A crucible is for the silver, and a furnace is for the gold,
    but Yahweh will test hearts.

    and not a fool in his folly.
13 For he who returns evil for good,
    evil will not depart from his house.
14 Like the release of water is the beginning of strife;
    before it breaks out, stop the quarrel.
15 He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous,
    the two of them are both abominations of Yahweh.
16 Why is this? A price in the hand of a fool,
    in order to buy wisdom where[g] there is no sense.[h]
17 The friend loves at all times[i],
    but a brother is born for adversity.
18 A person who lacks sense[j] pledges;[k]
    he becomes security before his neighbor.
19 He who loves transgression loves strife;
    he who builds his high thresholds seeks destruction.
20 He who is crooked of heart[l] will not find goodness,
    and he who is perverse, by his tongue he will fall into calamity.
21 He who begets a fool, there is trouble for him;
    the father of a fool will not rejoice.
22 A cheerful heart is good medicine,
    but a downcast spirit will dry out bones.
23 The wicked will accept a bribe from the lap,
    in order to pervert the ways of justice.
24 He who understands sets his face toward wisdom,
    but the eyes of a fool, to the end of the earth.[m]
25 A grief to his father is the child of a fool,
    and bitterness to her who bore him.
26 Also, imposing a fine on the righteous is not good,
    nor to flog nobles for uprightness.
27 He who spares his sayings knows knowledge,
    and a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
28 Even a fool who keeps silent shall be considered wise;[n]
    he who closes his lips is intelligent.

Philippians 4

Appeal for Unity

So then, my beloved and greatly desired brothers, my joy and crown, thus stand firm in the Lord, dear friends. I appeal to Euodia and I appeal to Syntyche to be in agreement[a] in the Lord. Yes, I ask also you, true yokefellow, help them, who struggled along with me in the gospel with both Clement and the rest of my fellow workers whose names are in the book of life.

Be Anxious for Nothing

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Let your gentleness be made known to all people. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds[b] in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are pleasing, whatever things are commendable, if there is any excellence of character and if anything praiseworthy, think about these things. And the things which you have learned and received and heard about and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last you have renewed your concern for me[c], for whom also you were thinking, but you had no opportunity to express it. 11 Not that I speak from need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12 I know how both to make do with little[d] and I know how to have an abundance[e]. In everything and in all things I have learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to have an abundance[f] and to go without. 13 I am able to do all things by the one who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless you have done well by sharing[g] with me in my affliction. 15 Now you also know, Philippians, that at the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving except you alone, 16 because even in Thessalonica on more than one occasion[h] you sent for my need. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek for the profit that increases to your account. 18 But I have received everything in full and have an abundance; I am well supplied[i] because[j] I received from Epaphroditus what you had sent[k], a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God. 19 And my God will fulfill your every need according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever[l]. Amen.

Final Greetings and Benediction

21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, and especially those of Caesar’s household. 23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
