New English Translation (NET)
Version
Hosea 4-5

The Lord’s Covenant Lawsuit against the Nation Israel

Listen to the Lord’s message, you Israelites![a]
For the Lord has a covenant lawsuit[b] against the people of Israel.[c]
For there is neither faithfulness nor loyalty in the land,
nor do they acknowledge God.[d]
There is only cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and adultery.
They resort to violence and bloodshed.[e]
Therefore the land will mourn,
and all its inhabitants will perish.[f]
The wild animals,[g] the birds of the sky,
and even the fish in the sea will perish.

The Lord’s Dispute against the Sinful Priesthood

Do not let anyone accuse or contend against anyone else:[h]
for my case is against you priests![i]
You stumble day and night,
and the false prophets stumble with you;
you have destroyed your own people.[j]
You have destroyed[k] my people
by failing to acknowledge me!
Because you refuse to acknowledge me,[l]
I will reject you as my priests.
Because you reject[m] the law of your God,
I will reject[n] your descendants.
The more the priests increased in numbers,
the more they rebelled against me.
They have turned[o] their glorious calling
into a shameful disgrace!
They feed on the sin offerings of my people;
their appetites long for their iniquity!
I will deal with the people and priests together:[p]
I will punish them both for their ways,
and I will repay them for their deeds.
10 They will eat, but not be satisfied;
they will engage in prostitution, but not increase in numbers;
because they have abandoned the Lord
by pursuing other gods.[q]

Judgment of Pagan Idolatry and Cultic Prostitution

11 Old and new wine
take away the understanding of my people.[r]
12 They consult their wooden idols,
and their diviner’s staff answers with an oracle.
The wind of prostitution blows them astray;
they commit spiritual adultery[s] against their God.
13 They sacrifice on the mountaintops
and burn offerings on the hills;
they sacrifice[t] under oak, poplar, and terebinth,
because their shade is so pleasant.
As a result, your daughters have become cult prostitutes,
and your daughters-in-law commit adultery!
14 I will not punish your daughters when they commit prostitution,
nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery.
For the men consort with harlots,
they sacrifice with temple prostitutes.
It is true:[u] “A people that lacks understanding will come to ruin!”

Warning to Judah: Do Not Join in Israel’s Apostasy

15 Although you, O Israel, commit adultery,
do not let Judah become guilty!
Do not journey to Gilgal.
Do not go up to Beth Aven.[v]
Do not swear, “As surely as the Lord lives!”
16 Israel has rebelled[w] like a stubborn heifer!
Soon[x] the Lord will put them out to pasture
like a lamb in a broad field.[y]
17 Ephraim has attached himself to idols;
Do not go near him!

The Shameful Sinners Will Be Brought to Shame

18 They consume their alcohol,
then engage in cult prostitution;
they dearly love their shameful behavior.
19 A whirlwind has wrapped them in its wings;
they will be brought to shame because of their idolatrous worship.[z]

Announcement of Sin and Judgment

Hear this, you priests!
Pay attention, you Israelites![aa]
Listen closely,[ab] O king![ac]
For judgment is about to overtake you.[ad]
For you were like a trap[ae] to Mizpah,[af]
like a net[ag] spread out to catch Tabor.[ah]
Those who revolt are knee-deep in slaughter,[ai]
but I will discipline them all.[aj]
I know Ephraim all too well;[ak]
the evil of[al] Israel is not hidden from me.
For you have engaged in prostitution, O Ephraim;
Israel has defiled itself.[am]
Their wicked deeds do not allow them to return to their God;
for a spirit of idolatry[an] is in them,
and they do not acknowledge the Lord.
The arrogance of Israel testifies against it;
Israel and Ephraim will be overthrown[ao] because[ap] of their iniquity.
Even Judah will be brought down[aq] with them.

The Futility of Sacrificial Ritual without Moral Obedience

Although they bring their flocks and herds[ar]
to seek[as] the favor of the Lord,[at]
They will not find him—
he has withdrawn himself from them!
They have committed treason[au] against the Lord,
because they bore illegitimate children.
Soon[av] the new moon festival will devour them and their fields.

The Prophet’s Declaration of Judgment

Blow the ram’s horn in Gibeah!
Sound the trumpet in Ramah!
Sound the alarm in Beth Aven;[aw]
tremble in fear,[ax] O Benjamin!
Ephraim will be ruined in the day of judgment.[ay]
What I am declaring[az] to the tribes of Israel will certainly take place![ba]

The Oppressors of the Helpless Will Be Oppressed

10 The princes of Judah are like those who move boundary markers.
I will pour out my rage on them like a torrential flood.[bb]
11 Ephraim will be oppressed,[bc] crushed[bd] under judgment,[be]
because he was determined to pursue worthless idols.[bf]

The Curse of the Incurable Wound

12 I will be like a moth to Ephraim,
like wood rot[bg] to the house of Judah.
13 When Ephraim saw[bh] his sickness
and Judah saw his wound,
then Ephraim turned[bi] to Assyria,
and begged[bj] its great king[bk] for help.
But he will not be able to heal you.
He cannot cure your wound![bl]

The Lion Will Carry Israel Off Into Exile

14 I will be like a lion to Ephraim,
like a young lion to the house of Judah.
I myself will tear them to pieces,
then I will carry them off, and no one will be able to rescue them!
15 Then I will return again to my lair
until they have suffered their punishment.[bm]
Then they will seek me;[bn]
in their distress they will earnestly seek me.

2 John

Introduction and Thanksgiving

From[a] the elder,[b] to an elect lady[c] and her children, whom I love in truth[d] (and not I alone, but also all those[e] who know the truth), because of the truth[f] that resides in us and will be with us forever. Grace, mercy, and[g] peace will be with us from God the Father and from[h] Jesus Christ the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

I rejoiced greatly because I have found some[i] of your children living according to the truth,[j] just as the Father commanded us.[k]

Warning Against False Teachers

But now[l] I ask you, lady (not as if I were[m] writing a new commandment[n] to you, but the one[o] we have had from the beginning),[p] that[q] we love one another. (Now this is love: that we walk[r] according to his commandments.) This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning; thus[s] you should walk in it.[t] For[u] many deceivers have gone out into the world, people who do not confess Jesus as[v] Christ[w] coming in the flesh.[x] This person is the deceiver and the antichrist![y] Watch out, so that you do not lose the things we have worked for,[z] but receive a full reward.[aa]

Everyone[ab] who goes on ahead and does not remain[ac] in the teaching of Christ[ad] does not have God.[ae] The one who remains in this teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house and do not give him any greeting,[af] 11 because the person who gives him a greeting shares in his evil deeds.[ag]

Conclusion

12 Though I have many other[ah] things to write to you, I do not want to do so with[ai] paper and ink,[aj] but I hope to come visit you and speak face to face,[ak] so that our joy may be complete.

13 The children of your elect sister greet you.[al]

Psalm 125

Psalm 125[a]

A song of ascents.[b]

125 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved and will endure forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people,
now and forevermore.
Indeed,[c] the scepter of a wicked king[d] will not settle[e]
upon the allotted land of the godly.
Otherwise the godly
might do what is wrong.[f]
Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
to the morally upright.[g]
As for those who are bent on traveling a sinful path,[h]
may the Lord remove them,[i] along with those who behave wickedly.[j]
May Israel experience peace.[k]

Proverbs 29:9-11

When[a] a wise person goes to court[b] with a foolish person,
there is no peace[c] whether he is angry or laughs.[d]
10 Bloodthirsty people[e] hate someone with integrity;[f]
as for the upright, they seek his life.[g]
11 A fool lets fly with all his temper,[h]
but a wise person keeps it back.[i]
