Deuteronomy 2-3

The Journey from Kadesh Barnea to Moab

Then we turned and set out toward the wilderness on the way to the Red Sea[a] just as the Lord told me to do, detouring around Mount Seir for a long time. At this point the Lord said to me, “You have circled around this mountain long enough; now turn north. Instruct[b] these people as follows: ‘You are about to cross the border of your relatives[c] the descendants of Esau,[d] who inhabit Seir. They will be afraid of you, so watch yourselves carefully. Do not be hostile toward them, because I am not giving you any of their land, not even a footprint, for I have given Mount Seir[e] as an inheritance for Esau. You may purchase[f] food to eat and water to drink from them. All along the way I, the Lord your God,[g] have blessed your every effort.[h] I have[i] been attentive to[j] your travels through this great wilderness. These forty years I have[k] been with you; you have lacked nothing.’”

So we turned away from our relatives[l] the descendants of Esau, the inhabitants of Seir, turning from the route of the rift valley[m] which comes up from[n] Elat[o] and Ezion Geber,[p] and traveling the way of the wilderness of Moab. Then the Lord said to me, “Do not harass Moab and provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land as your territory. This is because I have given Ar[q] to the descendants of Lot[r] as their possession. 10 (The Emites[s] used to live there, a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakites. 11 These people, as well as the Anakites, are also considered Rephaites;[t] the Moabites call them Emites. 12 Previously the Horites[u] lived in Seir, but the descendants of Esau dispossessed and destroyed them and settled in their place, just as Israel did to the land it came to possess, the land the Lord gave them.)[v] 13 Now, get up and cross the Wadi Zered.”[w] So we did so.[x] 14 Now the length of time it took for us to go from Kadesh Barnea to the crossing of Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, time for all the military men of that generation to die, just as the Lord had vowed to them. 15 Indeed, it was the very hand of the Lord that eliminated them from within[y] the camp until they were all gone.

Instructions Concerning Ammon

16 So it was that after all the military men had been eliminated from the community,[z] 17 the Lord said to me, 18 “Today you are going to cross the border of Moab, that is, of Ar.[aa] 19 But when you come close to the Ammonites, do not harass or provoke them because I am not giving you any of the Ammonites’ land as your possession; I have already given it to Lot’s descendants[ab] as their possession.”

20 (That also is considered to be a land of the Rephaites.[ac] The Rephaites lived there originally; the Ammonites call them Zamzummites.[ad] 21 They are a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakites. But the Lord destroyed the Rephaites[ae] in advance of the Ammonites,[af] so they dispossessed them and settled down in their place. 22 This is exactly what he did for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir when he destroyed the Horites before them so that they could dispossess them and settle in their area to this very day. 23 As for the Avvites[ag] who lived in settlements as far west as Gaza, Caphtorites[ah] who came from Crete[ai] destroyed them and settled down in their place.)

24 “Get up, make your way across Wadi Arnon. Look, I have already delivered over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon,[aj] and his land. Go ahead—take it! Engage him in war! 25 This very day I will begin to fill all the people of the earth[ak] with dread and to terrify them when they hear about you. They will shiver and shake in anticipation of your approach.”[al]

Defeat of Sihon, King of Heshbon

26 Then I sent messengers from the Kedemoth[am] wilderness to King Sihon of Heshbon with an offer of peace: 27 “Let me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the roadway.[an] I will not turn aside to the right or the left. 28 Sell me food for cash[ao] so that I can eat and sell me water to drink.[ap] Just allow me to go through on foot, 29 just as the descendants of Esau who live at Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land the Lord our God is giving us.” 30 But King Sihon of Heshbon was unwilling to allow us to pass near him because the Lord our[aq] God had made him obstinate[ar] and stubborn[as] so that he might deliver him over to you[at] this very day. 31 The Lord said to me, “Look! I have already begun to give over Sihon and his land to you. Start right now to take his land as your possession.” 32 When Sihon and all his troops[au] emerged to encounter us in battle at Jahaz,[av] 33 the Lord our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, along with his sons[aw] and everyone else.[ax] 34 At that time we seized all his cities and put every one of them[ay] under divine judgment,[az] including even the women and children; we left no survivors. 35 We kept only the livestock and plunder from the cities for ourselves. 36 From Aroer,[ba] which is at the edge of Wadi Arnon (it is the city in the wadi),[bb] all the way to Gilead there was not a town able to resist us—the Lord our God gave them all to us. 37 However, you did not approach the land of the Ammonites, the Wadi Jabbok,[bc] the cities of the hill country, or any place else forbidden by the Lord our God.

Defeat of King Og of Bashan

Next we set out on[bd] the route to Bashan,[be] but King Og of Bashan and his whole army[bf] came out to meet us in battle at Edrei.[bg] The Lord, however, said to me, “Don’t be afraid of him because I have already given him, his whole army,[bh] and his land to you. You will do to him exactly what you did to King Sihon of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon.” So the Lord our God did indeed give over to us King Og of Bashan and his whole army, and we struck them down until not a single survivor was left.[bi] We captured all his cities at that time—there was not a town we did not take from them—sixty cities, all the region of Argob,[bj] the dominion of Og in Bashan. All of these cities were fortified by high walls, gates, and locking bars;[bk] in addition there were a great many open villages.[bl] We put all of these under divine judgment[bm] just as we had done to King Sihon of Heshbon—every occupied city,[bn] including women and children. But all the livestock and plunder from the cities we kept for ourselves. So at that time we took the land of the two Amorite kings in the Transjordan from Wadi Arnon to Mount Hermon[bo] (the Sidonians[bp] call Hermon Sirion[bq] and the Amorites call it Senir),[br] 10 all the cities of the plateau, all of Gilead and Bashan as far as Salecah[bs] and Edrei,[bt] cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 Only King Og of Bashan was left of the remaining Rephaites. (It is noteworthy[bu] that his sarcophagus[bv] was made of iron.[bw] Does it not, indeed, still remain in Rabbath[bx] of the Ammonites? It is 13½ feet[by] long and 6 feet[bz] wide according to standard measure.)[ca]

Distribution of the Transjordanian Allotments

12 This is the land we brought under our control at that time: The territory extending from Aroer[cb] by the Wadi Arnon and half the Gilead hill country with its cities I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites.[cc] 13 The rest of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh.[cd] (All the region of Argob,[ce] that is, all Bashan, is called the land of Rephaim. 14 Jair, son of Manasseh, took all the Argob region as far as the border with the Geshurites[cf] and Maacathites[cg]—namely Bashan—and called it by his name, Havvoth Jair,[ch] which it retains to this very day.) 15 I gave Gilead to Machir.[ci] 16 To the Reubenites and Gadites I allocated the territory extending from Gilead as far as Wadi Arnon (the exact middle of the wadi was a boundary) all the way to the Wadi Jabbok, the Ammonite border. 17 The rift valley[cj] and the Jordan River[ck] were also a border, from the Sea of Kinnereth[cl] to the sea of the rift valley (that is, the Salt Sea),[cm] beneath the slopes[cn] of Pisgah[co] to the east.

Instructions to the Transjordanian Tribes

18 At that time I instructed you as follows: “The Lord your God has given you this land for your possession. You warriors are to cross over equipped for battle before your fellow Israelites.[cp] 19 But your wives, children, and livestock (of which I know you have many) may remain in the cities I have given you. 20 You must fight[cq] until the Lord gives your countrymen victory[cr] as he did you and they take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan River. Then each of you may return to his own territory that I have given you.” 21 I also commanded Joshua at the same time, “You have seen everything the Lord your God did to these two kings; he[cs] will do the same to all the kingdoms where you are going.[ct] 22 Do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God will personally fight for you.”

Denial to Moses of the Promised Land

23 Moreover, at that time I pleaded with the Lord, 24 “O, Sovereign Lord,[cu] you have begun to show me[cv] your greatness and strength.[cw] (What god in heaven or earth can rival your works and mighty deeds?) 25 Let me please cross over to see the good land on the other side of the Jordan River—this good hill country and the Lebanon!”[cx] 26 But the Lord was angry at me because of you and would not listen to me. Instead, he[cy] said to me, “Enough of that![cz] Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah and take a good look to the west, north, south, and east,[da] for you will not be allowed to cross the Jordan. 28 Commission[db] Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, because he will lead these people over and will enable them to inherit the land you will see.” 29 So we settled down in the valley opposite Beth Peor.[dc]

Luke 6:12-38

Choosing the Twelve Apostles

12 Now[a] it was during this time that Jesus[b] went out to the mountain[c] to pray, and he spent all night[d] in prayer to God.[e] 13 When[f] morning came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles:[g] 14 Simon[h] (whom he named Peter), and his brother Andrew; and James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,[i] 15 Matthew, Thomas,[j] James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot,[k] 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot,[l] who became a traitor.

The Sermon on the Plain

17 Then[m] he came down with them and stood on a level place.[n] And a large number[o] of his disciples had gathered[p] along with[q] a vast multitude from all over Judea, from[r] Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.[s] They came to hear him and to be healed[t] of their diseases, 18 and those who suffered from[u] unclean[v] spirits were cured. 19 The[w] whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power[x] was coming out from him and healing them all.

20 Then[y] he looked up[z] at his disciples and said:

“Blessed[aa] are you who are poor,[ab] for the kingdom of God belongs[ac] to you.
21 “Blessed are you who hunger[ad] now, for you will be satisfied.[ae]
“Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.[af]
22 “Blessed are you when people[ag] hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject you as evil[ah] on account of the Son of Man! 23 Rejoice in that day, and jump for joy, because[ai] your reward is great in heaven. For their ancestors[aj] did the same things to the prophets.[ak]
24 “But woe[al] to you who are rich, for you have received[am] your comfort[an] already.
25 “Woe to you who are well satisfied with food[ao] now, for you will be hungry.
“Woe to you[ap] who laugh[aq] now, for you will mourn and weep.
26 “Woe to you[ar] when all people[as] speak well of you, for their ancestors[at] did the same things to the false prophets.

27 “But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies,[au] do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat[av] you. 29 To the person who strikes you on the cheek,[aw] offer the other as well,[ax] and from the person who takes away your coat,[ay] do not withhold your tunic[az] either.[ba] 30 Give to everyone who asks you,[bb] and do not ask for your possessions[bc] back[bd] from the person who takes them away. 31 Treat others[be] in the same way that you would want them to treat you.[bf]

32 “If[bg] you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners[bh] love those who love them.[bi] 33 And[bj] if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even[bk] sinners[bl] do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to be repaid,[bm] what credit is that to you? Even sinners[bn] lend to sinners, so that they may be repaid in full.[bo] 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back.[bp] Then[bq] your reward will be great, and you will be sons[br] of the Most High,[bs] because he is kind to ungrateful and evil people.[bt] 36 Be merciful,[bu] just as your Father is merciful.

Do Not Judge Others

37 “Do[bv] not judge,[bw] and you will not be judged;[bx] do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; forgive,[by] and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you: A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over,[bz] will be poured[ca] into your lap. For the measure you use will be the measure you receive.”[cb]

Psalm 67

Psalm 67[a]

For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a psalm, a song.

67 May God show us his favor[b] and bless us.[c]
May he smile on us.[d] (Selah)
Then those living on earth will know what you are like;
all nations will know how you deliver your people.[e]
Let the nations thank you, O God.
Let all the nations thank you.[f]
Let foreigners[g] rejoice and celebrate.
For you execute justice among the nations,
and govern the people living on earth.[h] (Selah)
Let the nations thank you, O God.
Let all the nations thank you.[i]
The earth yields its crops.
May God, our God, bless us.
May God bless us.[j]
Then all the ends of the earth will give him the honor he deserves.[k]

Proverbs 11:27

27 The one who diligently seeks[a] good seeks favor,
but the one who searches for[b] evil—it will come to him.[c]
