Numbers 6-7

The Nazirite Vow

[a] Then the Lord spoke to Moses: “Speak to the Israelites, and tell them, ‘When someone—either a man or a woman[b]—takes a special vow,[c] to take a vow[d] as a Nazirite,[e] to separate[f] himself to the Lord, he must separate[g] himself from wine and strong drink; he must drink neither vinegar[h] made from wine nor vinegar made from strong drink, nor may he drink any juice[i] of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes or raisins.[j] All the days of his separation he must not eat anything that is produced by the grapevine, from seed[k] to skin.[l]

“‘All the days of the vow[m] of his separation no razor may be used on his head[n] until the time[o] is fulfilled for which he separated himself to the Lord. He will be holy,[p] and he must let[q] the locks of hair on his head grow long.

“‘All the days that he separates himself to the Lord he must not contact[r] a dead body.[s] He must not defile himself even[t] for his father or his mother or his brother or his sister if they die,[u] because the separation[v] for[w] his God is on his head. All the days of his separation he must be holy to the Lord.

Contingencies for Defilement

“‘If anyone dies very suddenly[x] beside him and he defiles[y] his consecrated head,[z] then he must shave his head on the day of his purification—on the seventh day he must shave it. 10 On the eighth day he is to bring[aa] two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest, to the entrance to the tent of meeting. 11 Then the priest will offer one for a purification offering[ab] and the other[ac] as a burnt offering,[ad] and make atonement[ae] for him, because of his transgression[af] in regard to the corpse. So he must reconsecrate[ag] his head on that day. 12 He must rededicate[ah] to the Lord the days of his separation and bring a male lamb in its first year as a reparation offering,[ai] but the former days will not be counted[aj] because his separation[ak] was defiled.

Fulfilling the Vows

13 “‘Now this is the law of the Nazirite: When the days of his separation are fulfilled, he must be brought[al] to the entrance of the tent of meeting, 14 and he must present his offering[am] to the Lord: one male lamb in its first year without blemish for a burnt offering, one ewe lamb in its first year without blemish for a purification offering, one ram without blemish for a peace offering,[an] 15 and a basket of bread made without yeast, cakes of fine flour mixed with olive oil, wafers made without yeast and smeared with olive oil, and their[ao] grain offering and their drink offerings.[ap]

16 “‘Then the priest must present all these[aq] before the Lord and offer[ar] his purification offering and his burnt offering. 17 Then he must offer the ram as a peace offering[as] to the Lord along with the basket of bread made without yeast; the priest must also offer his grain offering and his drink offering.

18 “‘Then the Nazirite must shave his consecrated head[at] at the entrance to the tent of meeting and must take the hair from his consecrated head and put it on the fire[au] where the peace offering is burning.[av] 19 And the priest must take the boiled shoulder of the ram, one cake made without yeast from the basket, and one wafer made without yeast, and put them on the hands of the Nazirite after he has shaved his consecrated head;[aw] 20 then the priest must wave them as a wave offering[ax] before the Lord; it is a holy portion for the priest, together with the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the raised offering.[ay] After this the Nazirite may drink[az] wine.

21 “‘This is the law[ba] of the Nazirite who vows to the Lord his offering according to his separation, as well as whatever else he can provide.[bb] Thus he must fulfill[bc] his vow that he makes, according to the law of his separation.’”

The Priestly Benediction

22 [bd] The Lord spoke to Moses: 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is the way[be] you are to bless[bf] the Israelites. Say[bg] to them:

24 “The Lord bless you[bh] and protect[bi] you;
25 The Lord make his face to shine upon you,
and be gracious to you;[bj]
26 The Lord lift up his countenance upon you[bk]
and give you peace.”’

27 “So they will put my name[bl] on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

The Leader’s Offerings

[bm] When Moses had completed setting up the tabernacle,[bn] he anointed it and consecrated it and all its furnishings, and he anointed and consecrated the altar and all its utensils. Then the leaders of Israel, the heads of their clans,[bo] made an offering. They were the leaders of the tribes; they were the ones who had been supervising[bp] the numbering. They brought[bq] their offerings before the Lord, six covered carts[br] and twelve oxen—one cart for every two of the leaders, and an ox for each one; and they presented them in front of the tabernacle.

The Distribution of the Gifts

Then the Lord spoke to Moses: “Receive these gifts[bs] from them, that they may be[bt] used in doing the work[bu] of the tent of meeting; and you must give them to the Levites, to every man[bv] as his service requires.”[bw]

So Moses accepted the carts and the oxen and gave them to the Levites. He gave two carts and four oxen to the Gershonites, as their service required; and he gave four carts and eight oxen to the Merarites, as their service required, under the authority[bx] of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest. But to the Kohathites he gave none, because the service of the holy things, which they carried[by] on their shoulders, was their responsibility.[bz]

The Time of Presentation

10 The leaders offered[ca] gifts[cb] for[cc] the dedication[cd] of the altar when it was anointed.[ce] And the leaders presented[cf] their offering before the altar. 11 For the Lord said to Moses, “They must present their offering, one leader for each day,[cg] for the dedication of the altar.”

These were the dedication offerings for the altar after it was anointed.[ck]

89 Now when Moses went into[cl] the tent of meeting to speak with the Lord,[cm] he heard the voice speaking to him from above the atonement lid[cn] that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim.[co] Thus he spoke to him.

Mark 12:38-13:13

Warnings About Experts in the Law

38 In his teaching Jesus[a] also said, “Watch out for the experts in the law.[b] They like walking[c] around in long robes and elaborate greetings[d] in the marketplaces,[e] 39 and the best seats in the synagogues[f] and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They[g] devour widows’ property,[h] and as a show make long prayers. These men will receive a more severe punishment.”

The Widow’s Offering

41 Then[i] he[j] sat down opposite the offering box,[k] and watched the crowd putting coins into it. Many rich people were throwing in large amounts. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins,[l] worth less than a penny. 43 He called his disciples and said to them, “I tell you the truth,[m] this poor widow has put more into the offering box[n] than all the others.[o] 44 For they all gave out of their wealth.[p] But she, out of her poverty, put in what she had to live on, everything she had.”[q]

The Destruction of the Temple

13 Now[r] as Jesus[s] was going out of the temple courts, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look at these tremendous stones and buildings!”[t] Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left on another.[u] All will be torn down!”[v]

Signs of the End of the Age

So[w] while he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John,[x] and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things[y] happen? And what will be the sign that all these things are about to take place?” Jesus began to say to them, “Watch out[z] that no one misleads you. Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’[aa] and they will mislead many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come.[ab] For nation will rise up in arms[ac] against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines.[ad] These are but the beginning of birth pains.

Persecution of Disciples

“You must watch out for yourselves. You will be handed over[ae] to councils[af] and beaten in the synagogues.[ag] You will stand before governors and kings[ah] because of me, as a witness to them. 10 First the gospel must be preached to all nations. 11 When they arrest you and hand you over for trial,[ai] do not worry about what to speak. But say whatever is given you at that time,[aj] for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12 Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against[ak] parents and have them put to death. 13 You will be hated by everyone because of my name.[al] But the one who endures to the end will be saved.[am]

Psalm 49

Psalm 49[a]

For the music director, a psalm by the Korahites.

49 Listen to this, all you nations.
Pay attention, all you inhabitants of the world.[b]
Pay attention, all you people,[c]
both rich and poor.
I will declare a wise saying;[d]
I will share my profound thoughts.[e]
I will learn a song that imparts wisdom;
I will then sing my insightful song to the accompaniment of a harp.[f]
Why should I be afraid in times of trouble,[g]
when the sinful deeds of deceptive men threaten to overwhelm me?[h]
They trust[i] in their wealth
and boast[j] in their great riches.
Certainly a man cannot rescue his brother;[k]
he cannot pay God an adequate ransom price[l]
(the ransom price for a human life[m] is too high,
and people go to their final destiny),[n]
so that he might continue to live[o] forever
and not experience death.[p]
10 Surely[q] one sees[r] that even wise people die;[s]
fools and spiritually insensitive people all pass away[t]
and leave their wealth to others.[u]
11 Their grave becomes their permanent residence,
their eternal dwelling place.[v]
They name their lands after themselves,[w]
12 but, despite their wealth, people do not last.[x]
They are like animals[y] that perish.[z]
13 This is the destiny of fools,[aa]
and of those who approve of their philosophy.[ab] (Selah)
14 They will travel to Sheol like sheep,[ac]
with death as their shepherd.[ad]
The godly will rule[ae] over them when the day of vindication dawns.[af]
Sheol will consume their bodies, and they will no longer live in impressive houses.[ag]
15 But[ah] God will rescue[ai] my life[aj] from the power[ak] of Sheol;
certainly[al] he will pull me to safety.[am] (Selah)
16 Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich[an]
and his wealth multiplies.[ao]
17 For he will take nothing with him when he dies;
his wealth will not follow him down into the grave.[ap]
18 He pronounces this blessing on himself while he is alive:
“May men praise you, for you have done well.”
19 But he will join his ancestors;[aq]
they will never again see the light of day.[ar]
20 Wealthy people do not understand;[as]
they are like animals[at] that perish.[au]

Proverbs 10:27-28

27 Fearing the Lord[a] prolongs life,[b]
but the life span[c] of the wicked will be shortened.[d]
28 The hope[e] of the righteous is joy,
but the expectation of the wicked perishes.
