Chronological
Woe to Those at Ease in Zion
6 (A)Woe to those who are at ease in Zion
And to those who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria,
The (B)distinguished men of the first of the nations,
To whom the house of Israel comes.
2 Pass on over to (C)Calneh and look,
And go from there to (D)Hamath the great,
Then go down to (E)Gath of the Philistines.
Are [a]they better than these kingdoms,
Or are their borders greater than your borders?
3 Do you (F)put off the day of calamity,
And would you (G)cause the seat of violence to approach?
4 Those who lay down on beds of ivory
And sprawl on their (H)couches
And (I)eat lambs from the flock
And calves from the midst of the stall,
5 Who improvise to the [b]sound of the harp,
And like David have [c]composed (J)songs for themselves,
6 Who (K)drink wine from [d]sacrificial bowls
While they anoint themselves with the first pick of the oils,
Yet they have not (L)grieved over the destruction of Joseph.
7 Therefore, they will now (M)go into exile among the first of the exiles,
And the (N)sprawlers’ [e]banqueting will turn aside.
8 Lord Yahweh has (O)sworn by Himself, Yahweh God of hosts has declared:
“I (P)abhor the lofty pride of Jacob
And hate his (Q)citadels;
Therefore I will (R)deliver up the city as well as its fullness.”
9 And it will be, if (S)ten men are left in one house, they will die. 10 Then one’s [f]uncle, or the one who [g](T)burns his bones, will lift him up to bring out his bones from the house, and he will say to the one who is in the innermost part of the house, “Is anyone else with you?” And that one will say, “No one.” Then he will [h]answer, “(U)Keep quiet. For [i]the name of Yahweh is (V)not to be mentioned.” 11 For behold, Yahweh is going to (W)command and will strike the (X)great house to pieces and the small house to fragments.
12 Do horses run on rocks?
Or does one plow [j]them with oxen?
Yet you have overturned (Y)justice into gall
And the fruit of righteousness into [k]wormwood,
13 You who are glad in [l](Z)Lo-debar
[m]And say, “Have we not (AA)by our own strength taken [n]Karnaim for ourselves?”
14 “For behold, (AB)I am going to raise up a nation against you,
O house of Israel,” declares Yahweh God of hosts,
“And they will press down on you from [o](AC)Lebo-hamath
To the (AD)brook of the Arabah.”
Yahweh Will Rise Up Against Israel
7 Thus Lord Yahweh showed me, and behold, He was forming a (AE)locust-swarm [p]when the spring crop began to come up. And behold, the spring crop was after the king’s [q]mowing. 2 And it happened [r]when it had (AF)completed eating the vegetation of the land, that I said,
“(AG)Lord Yahweh, please pardon!
[s]How can Jacob rise up,
For he is (AH)small?”
3 Yahweh [t](AI)relented concerning this.
“It shall not be,” said Yahweh.
4 Thus Lord Yahweh showed me, and behold, Lord Yahweh was calling to contend with them by (AJ)fire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the [u]farm land. 5 Then I said,
“(AK)Lord Yahweh, please stop!
[v](AL)How can Jacob rise up, for he is small?”
6 Yahweh [w](AM)relented concerning this.
“This too shall not be,” said Lord Yahweh.
7 Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing [x]by a wall made with a [y]plumb line, and in His hand was a [z]plumb line. 8 And Yahweh said to me, “(AN)What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,
“Behold, I am about to put a (AO)plumb line
In the midst of My people Israel.
I will (AP)pass over them no longer.
9 The (AQ)high places of Isaac will be desolated
And the (AR)sanctuaries of Israel laid waste.
Then I will (AS)rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”
Amos Accused
10 Then Amaziah, the (AT)priest of Bethel, sent word to (AU)Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has (AV)conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. 11 For thus Amos says, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’” 12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “(AW)Go, you seer, flee away to the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and there do your prophesying! 13 But (AX)no longer prophesy at Bethel, for it is a (AY)sanctuary of the king and a royal house.”
14 Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor am I the (AZ)son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a [aa]grower of sycamore figs. 15 But Yahweh took me from [ab]following the flock, and Yahweh said to me, ‘Go (BA)prophesy to My people Israel.’ 16 So now, hear the word of Yahweh: you are saying, ‘You (BB)shall not prophesy against Israel, (BC)nor shall you drip out words against the house of Isaac.’ 17 Therefore, thus says Yahweh, ‘Your (BD)wife will play the harlot in the city, your (BE)sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be divided up by a measuring line, and you yourself will die [ac]upon (BF)unclean land. Moreover, Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’”
A Famine for Hearing the Words of Yahweh
8 Thus Lord Yahweh showed me, and behold, there was a basket of summer fruit. 2 And he said, “What do you see, Amos?” And (BG)I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then Yahweh said to me, “The (BH)end has come for My people Israel. I will (BI)pass over them no longer. 3 And they will (BJ)wail with the (BK)songs of the palace in that day,” declares Lord Yahweh. “Many will be the (BL)corpses; in every place [ad]they will cast them forth [ae]in silence.”
4 Hear this, you who [af](BM)trample the needy, even to cause the humble of the land to cease, 5 saying,
“When will the (BN)new moon pass over,
So that we may sell grain,
And the (BO)sabbath, that we may open the wheat market,
To make the [ag]bushel smaller and the [ah]shekel bigger,
And to (BP)cheat with a deceptive balance,
6 So as to (BQ)buy the poor for [ai]money
And the needy for a pair of sandals,
And that we may sell the refuse of the wheat?”
7 Yahweh has (BR)sworn by the (BS)lofty pride of Jacob,
“Indeed, I will (BT)never forget any of their works.
8 Because of this will not the land (BU)tremble
And everyone who inhabits it (BV)mourn?
Indeed, all of it will (BW)rise up like the Nile,
And it will be tossed about
And subside like the Nile of Egypt.
9 And it will be in that day,” declares Lord Yahweh,
“That I will make the (BX)sun go down at noon
And (BY)make the earth dark in [aj]broad daylight.
10 Then I will (BZ)overturn your feasts into mourning
And all your songs into [ak]lamentation;
And I will bring up (CA)sackcloth on everyone’s loins
And baldness on every head.
And I will make it (CB)like a time of mourning for an only son,
And the end of it will be like a bitter day.
11 “Behold, days are coming,” declares Lord Yahweh,
“When I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water,
But rather (CC)for hearing the words of Yahweh.
12 People will wander from sea to sea
And from the north even to the east;
They will go to and fro to (CD)seek the word of Yahweh,
But they will not find it.
13 In that day the beautiful (CE)virgins
And the choice men will (CF)faint from thirst.
14 As for those who swear by the [al](CG)guilt of Samaria,
Who say, ‘As your god lives, O (CH)Dan,’
And, ‘As the way of (CI)Beersheba lives,’
They will fall and (CJ)not rise again.”
Sinful Israelites Will Die by the Sword
9 I saw the Lord standing beside the (CK)altar, and He said,
“Strike the capitals so that the (CL)thresholds will quake,
And (CM)break them on the heads of them all!
Then I will (CN)kill the rest of them with the sword;
(CO)Not one of them who can flee will flee,
And not one of them who can survive will escape.
2 Though they dig into (CP)Sheol,
From there will My hand take them;
And though they (CQ)ascend to heaven,
From there will I bring them down.
3 And though they hide on the [am]top of Carmel,
From there I will (CR)search them out and take them;
And though they (CS)conceal themselves from My eyes on the floor of the sea,
From there I will command the (CT)serpent, and it will bite them.
4 And though they go into (CU)captivity before their enemies,
From there I will command the sword that it kill them,
And I will (CV)set My eyes against them for evil and not for good.”
5 Now Lord Yahweh of hosts,
The One who (CW)touches the land so that it melts,
And (CX)all those who inhabit it mourn,
And all of it rises up like the Nile
And subsides like the Nile of Egypt;
6 The One who builds His [an](CY)upper chambers in the heavens
And has founded His vaulted dome over the earth;
The One who (CZ)calls for the waters of the sea
And (DA)pours them out on the face of the earth;
(DB)Yahweh is His name.
7 “Are you not as the sons of (DC)Ethiopia to Me,
O sons of Israel?” declares Yahweh.
“Have I not brought up Israel from the land of Egypt,
And the (DD)Philistines from Caphtor and the (DE)Arameans from (DF)Kir?
8 Behold, the (DG)eyes of Lord Yahweh are on the sinful kingdom,
And I will (DH)destroy it from the face of the earth;
Nevertheless, I will (DI)not totally destroy the house of Jacob,”
Declares Yahweh.
9 “For behold, I am commanding,
And I will (DJ)shake the house of Israel among all nations
As grain is shaken in a sieve,
But not a [ao]kernel will fall to the ground.
10 All the (DK)sinners of My people will die by the sword,
Those who say, ‘(DL)The calamity will not overtake or confront us.’
Yahweh Will Rebuild Israel
11 “In that day I will (DM)raise up the fallen [ap](DN)booth of David
And wall up its (DO)breaches;
I will also raise up its ruins
And rebuild it as in the (DP)ancient days,
12 (DQ)That they may possess the remnant of (DR)Edom
And all the [aq]nations who are (DS)called by My name,”
Declares Yahweh who does this.
13 “Behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh,
“When the (DT)plowman will overtake the reaper
And the treader of grapes him who sows seed;
When the (DU)mountains will drip [ar]sweet (DV)wine
And all the hills will melt.
14 Also I will (DW)restore the [as]captivity of My people Israel,
And they will (DX)rebuild the desolated cities and live in them;
They will also (DY)plant vineyards and drink their wine
And make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 I will also plant them on their land,
And (DZ)they will not again be uprooted from their land
Which I have given them,”
Says Yahweh your God.
