Bible in 90 Days
Psalm 135[a]
135 Praise the Lord.
Praise the name of the Lord.
Offer praise, you servants of the Lord,
2 who serve[b] in the Lord’s temple,
in the courts of the temple of our God.
3 Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.
Sing praises to his name, for it is pleasant.[c]
4 Indeed,[d] the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself,
Israel to be his special possession.[e]
5 Yes,[f] I know the Lord is great,
and our Lord is superior to all gods.
6 He does whatever he pleases
in heaven and on earth,
in the seas and all the ocean depths.
7 He causes the clouds to arise from the end of the earth,
makes lightning bolts accompany the rain,
and brings the wind out of his storehouses.
8 He struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
including both men and animals.
9 He performed awesome deeds[g] and acts of judgment[h]
in your midst, O Egypt,
against Pharaoh and all his servants.
10 He defeated many nations,
and killed mighty kings—
11 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
and Og, king of Bashan,
and all the kingdoms of Canaan.
12 He gave their land as an inheritance,
as an inheritance to Israel his people.
13 O Lord, your name endures,[i]
your reputation, O Lord, lasts.[j]
14 For the Lord vindicates[k] his people,
and has compassion on his servants.[l]
15 The nations’ idols are made of silver and gold;
they are man-made.[m]
16 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but cannot see,
17 and ears, but cannot hear.
Indeed, they cannot breathe.[n]
18 Those who make them will end up[o] like them,
as will everyone who trusts in them.
19 O family[p] of Israel, praise the Lord.
O family of Aaron, praise the Lord.
20 O family of Levi, praise the Lord.
You loyal followers[q] of the Lord, praise the Lord.
21 The Lord deserves praise in Zion[r]—
he who dwells in Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord.
Psalm 136[s]
136 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his loyal love endures.[t]
2 Give thanks to the God of gods,
for his loyal love endures.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
for his loyal love endures,
4 to the one who performs magnificent, amazing deeds all by himself,
for his loyal love endures,
5 to the one who used wisdom to make the heavens,
for his loyal love endures,
6 to the one who spread out the earth over the water,
for his loyal love endures,
7 to the one who made the great lights,
for his loyal love endures,
8 the sun to rule by day,
for his loyal love endures,
9 the moon and stars to rule by night,
for his loyal love endures,
10 to the one who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
for his loyal love endures,
11 and led Israel out from their midst,
for his loyal love endures,
12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
for his loyal love endures,
13 to the one who divided[u] the Red Sea[v] in two,[w]
for his loyal love endures,
14 and led Israel through its midst,
for his loyal love endures,
15 and tossed[x] Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea,
for his loyal love endures,
16 to the one who led his people through the wilderness,
for his loyal love endures,
17 to the one who struck down great kings,
for his loyal love endures,
18 and killed powerful kings,
for his loyal love endures,
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
for his loyal love endures,
20 Og, king of Bashan,
for his loyal love endures,
21 and gave their land as an inheritance,
for his loyal love endures,
22 as an inheritance to Israel his servant,
for his loyal love endures,
23 to the one who remembered us when we were down,[y]
for his loyal love endures,
24 and snatched us away from our enemies,
for his loyal love endures,
25 to the one who gives food to all living things,[z]
for his loyal love endures.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven,
for his loyal love endures!
Psalm 137[aa]
137 By the rivers of Babylon
we sit down and weep[ab]
when we remember Zion.
2 On the poplars in her midst
we hang our harps,
3 for there our captors ask us to compose songs;[ac]
those who mock us demand that we be happy, saying:[ad]
“Sing for us a song about Zion!”[ae]
4 How can we sing a song to the Lord
in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
may my right hand be crippled.[af]
6 May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth,
if I do not remember you,
and do not give Jerusalem priority
over whatever gives me the most joy.[ag]
7 Remember, O Lord, what the Edomites did
on the day Jerusalem fell.[ah]
They said, “Tear it down, tear it down,[ai]
right to its very foundation!”
8 O daughter Babylon, soon to be devastated,[aj]
how blessed will be the one who repays you
for what you dished out to us.[ak]
9 How blessed will be the one who grabs your babies
and smashes them on a rock.[al]
Psalm 138[am]
By David.
138 I will give you thanks with all my heart;
before the heavenly assembly[an] I will sing praises to you.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple,
and give thanks to your name,
because of your loyal love and faithfulness,
for you have exalted your promise above the entire sky.[ao]
3 When[ap] I cried out for help, you answered me.
You made me bold and energized me.[aq]
4 Let all the kings of the earth give thanks[ar] to you, O Lord,
when they hear the words you speak.[as]
5 Let them sing about the Lord’s deeds,[at]
for the Lord’s splendor is magnificent.[au]
6 Though the Lord is exalted, he looks after the lowly,
and from far away humbles[av] the proud.
7 Even when I must walk in the midst of danger,[aw] you revive me.
You oppose my angry enemies,[ax]
and your right hand delivers me.
8 The Lord avenges me.[ay]
O Lord, your loyal love endures.
Do not abandon those whom you have made.[az]
Psalm 139[ba]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
139 O Lord, you examine me[bb] and know me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I get up;
even from far away you understand my motives.
3 You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest;[bc]
you are aware of everything I do.[bd]
4 Certainly[be] my tongue does not frame a word
without you, O Lord, being thoroughly aware of it.[bf]
5 You squeeze me in from behind and in front;
you place your hand on me.
6 Your knowledge is beyond my comprehension;
it is so far beyond me, I am unable to fathom it.[bg]
7 Where can I go to escape your Spirit?
Where can I flee to escape your presence?[bh]
8 If I were to ascend[bi] to heaven, you would be there.
If I were to sprawl out[bj] in Sheol, there you would be.[bk]
9 If I were to fly away[bl] on the wings of the dawn,[bm]
and settle down on the other side[bn] of the sea,
10 even there your hand would guide me,
your right hand would grab hold of me.
11 If I were to say, “Certainly the darkness will cover me,[bo]
and the light will turn to night all around me,”[bp]
12 even the darkness is not too dark for you to see,[bq]
and the night is as bright as[br] day;
darkness and light are the same to you.[bs]
13 Certainly[bt] you made my mind and heart;[bu]
you wove me together[bv] in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give you thanks because your deeds are awesome and amazing.[bw]
You knew me thoroughly;[bx]
15 my bones were not hidden from you,
when[by] I was made in secret
and sewed together in the depths of the earth.[bz]
16 Your eyes saw me when I was inside the womb.[ca]
All the days ordained for me
were recorded in your scroll
before one of them came into existence.[cb]
17 How difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts about me, O God![cc]
How vast is their sum total.[cd]
18 If I tried to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
Even if I finished counting them,
I would still have to contend with you.[ce]
19 If only[cf] you would kill the wicked, O God!
Get away from me, you violent men![cg]
20 They[ch] rebel against you[ci] and act deceitfully;[cj]
your enemies lie.[ck]
21 O Lord, do I not hate those who hate you,
and despise those who oppose you?[cl]
22 I absolutely hate them;[cm]
they have become my enemies.
23 Examine me, O God, and probe my thoughts.[cn]
Test me, and know my concerns.[co]
24 See if there is any idolatrous way[cp] in me,
and lead me in the everlasting way.[cq]
Psalm 140[cr]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
140 O Lord, rescue me from wicked men.[cs]
Protect me from violent men,[ct]
2 who plan ways to harm me.[cu]
All day long they stir up conflict.[cv]
3 Their tongues wound like a serpent;[cw]
a viper’s[cx] venom is behind[cy] their lips. (Selah)
4 O Lord, shelter me from the power[cz] of the wicked.
Protect me from violent men,
who plan to knock me over.[da]
5 Proud men hide a snare for me;
evil men[db] spread a net by the path.
They set traps for me. (Selah)
6 I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”
O Lord, pay attention to my plea for mercy.
7 O Sovereign Lord, my strong deliverer,[dc]
you shield[dd] my head in the day of battle.
8 O Lord, do not let the wicked have their way.[de]
Do not allow their[df] plan to succeed when they attack.[dg] (Selah)
9 As for the heads of those who surround me—
may the harm done by[dh] their lips overwhelm them.
10 May he rain down[di] fiery coals upon them.
May he throw them into the fire.
From bottomless pits they will not escape.[dj]
11 A slanderer[dk] will not endure on[dl] the earth;
calamity will hunt down a violent man and strike him down.[dm]
12 I know[dn] that the Lord defends the cause of the oppressed
and vindicates the poor.[do]
13 Certainly the godly will give thanks to your name;
the morally upright will live in your presence.
Psalm 141[dp]
A psalm of David.
141 O Lord, I cry out to you. Come quickly to me.
Pay attention to me when I cry out to you.
2 May you accept my prayer like incense,
my uplifted hands like the evening offering.[dq]
3 O Lord, place a guard on my mouth.
Protect the opening[dr] of my lips.[ds]
4 Do not let me have evil desires,[dt]
or participate in sinful activities
with men who behave wickedly.[du]
I will not eat their delicacies.[dv]
5 May the godly strike me in love and correct me.
May my head not refuse[dw] choice oil.[dx]
Indeed, my prayer is a witness against their evil deeds.[dy]
6 They will be thrown over the side of a cliff by their judges.[dz]
They[ea] will listen to my words, for they are pleasant.
7 As when one plows and breaks up the soil,[eb]
so our bones are scattered at the mouth of Sheol.
8 Surely I am looking to you,[ec] O Sovereign Lord.
In you I take shelter.
Do not expose me to danger.[ed]
9 Protect me from the snare they have laid for me,
and the traps the evildoers have set.[ee]
10 Let the wicked fall[ef] into their[eg] own nets,
while I escape.[eh]
Psalm 142[ei]
A well-written song[ej] by David, when he was in the cave;[ek] a prayer.
142 To the Lord I cry out;[el]
to the Lord I plead for mercy.[em]
2 I pour out my lament before him;
I tell him about[en] my troubles.
3 Even when my strength leaves me,[eo]
you watch my footsteps.[ep]
In the path where I walk
they have hidden a trap for me.
4 Look to the right and see.
No one cares about me.[eq]
I have nowhere to run;[er]
no one is concerned about my life.[es]
5 I cry out to you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my shelter,
my security[et] in the land of the living.”
6 Listen to my cry for help,
for I am in serious trouble.[eu]
Rescue me from those who chase me,
for they are stronger than I am.
7 Free me[ev] from prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.
Because of me the godly will assemble,[ew]
for you will vindicate me.[ex]
Psalm 143[ey]
A psalm of David.
143 O Lord, hear my prayer.
Pay attention to my plea for help.
Because of your faithfulness and justice, answer me.
2 Do not sit in judgment on[ez] your servant,
for no one alive is innocent before you.[fa]
3 Certainly[fb] my enemies[fc] chase me.
They smash me into the ground.[fd]
They force me to live[fe] in dark regions,[ff]
like those who have been dead for ages.
4 My strength leaves me;[fg]
I am absolutely shocked.[fh]
5 I recall the old days.[fi]
I meditate on all you have done;
I reflect on your accomplishments.[fj]
6 I spread my hands out to you in prayer;[fk]
my soul thirsts for you in a parched[fl] land.[fm] (Selah)
7 Answer me quickly, Lord.
My strength is fading.[fn]
Do not reject me,[fo]
or I will join[fp] those descending into the grave.[fq]
8 May I hear about your loyal love in the morning,[fr]
for I trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,[fs]
because I long for you.[ft]
9 Rescue me from my enemies, O Lord.
I run to you for protection.[fu]
10 Teach me to do what pleases you,[fv]
for you are my God.
May your kind presence[fw]
lead me[fx] into a level land.[fy]
11 O Lord, for the sake of your reputation,[fz] revive me.[ga]
Because of your justice, rescue me from trouble.[gb]
12 As a demonstration of your loyal love,[gc] destroy my enemies.
Annihilate[gd] all who threaten my life,[ge]
for I am your servant.
Psalm 144[gf]
By David.
144 The Lord, my Protector,[gg] deserves praise[gh]—
the one who trains my hands for battle,[gi]
and my fingers for war,
2 who loves me[gj] and is my stronghold,
my refuge[gk] and my deliverer,
my shield and the one in whom I take shelter,
who makes nations submit to me.[gl]
3 O Lord, of what importance is the human race,[gm] that you should notice them?
Of what importance is mankind,[gn] that you should be concerned about them?[go]
4 People[gp] are like a vapor,
their days like a shadow that disappears.[gq]
5 O Lord, make the sky sink[gr] and come down.[gs]
Touch the mountains and make them smolder.[gt]
6 Hurl lightning bolts and scatter the enemy.
Shoot your arrows and rout them.[gu]
7 Reach down[gv] from above.
Grab me and rescue me from the surging water,[gw]
from the power of foreigners,[gx]
8 who speak lies,
and make false promises.[gy]
9 O God, I will sing a new song to you.
Accompanied by a ten-stringed instrument, I will sing praises to you,
10 the one who delivers[gz] kings,
and rescued David his servant from a deadly[ha] sword.
11 Grab me and rescue me from the power of foreigners,[hb]
who speak lies,
and make false promises.[hc]
12 Then[hd] our sons will be like plants,
that quickly grow to full size.[he]
Our daughters will be like corner pillars,[hf]
carved like those in a palace.[hg]
13 Our storehouses[hh] will be full,
providing all kinds of food.[hi]
Our sheep will multiply by the thousands
and fill[hj] our pastures.[hk]
14 Our cattle will be weighted down with produce.[hl]
No one will break through our walls,
no one will be taken captive,
and there will be no terrified cries in our city squares.[hm]
15 How blessed are the people who experience these things.[hn]
How blessed are the people whose God is the Lord.
Psalm 145[ho]
A psalm of praise; by David.
145 I will extol you, my God, O King.
I will praise your name continually.[hp]
2 Every day I will praise you.
I will praise your name continually.[hq]
3 The Lord is great and certainly worthy of praise.
No one can fathom his greatness.[hr]
4 One generation will praise your deeds to another,
and tell about your mighty acts.[hs]
5 I will focus on your honor and majestic splendor,
and your amazing deeds.[ht]
6 They will proclaim[hu] the power of your awesome acts.
I will declare your great deeds.
7 They will talk about the fame of your great kindness,[hv]
and sing about your justice.[hw]
8 The Lord is merciful and compassionate;
he is patient[hx] and demonstrates great loyal love.[hy]
9 The Lord is good to all,
and has compassion on all he has made.[hz]
10 All your works will give thanks to you, Lord.
Your loyal followers will praise you.
11 They will proclaim the splendor of your kingdom;
they will tell about your power,
12 so that mankind[ia] might acknowledge your mighty acts,
and the majestic splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an eternal kingdom,[ib]
and your dominion endures through all generations.
14 [ic] The Lord supports all who fall,
and lifts up all who are bent over.[id]
15 Everything looks to you in anticipation,[ie]
and you provide them with food on a regular basis.[if]
16 You open your hand,
and fill every living thing with the food it desires.[ig]
17 The Lord is just in all his actions,[ih]
and exhibits love in all he does.[ii]
18 The Lord is near all who cry out to him,
all who cry out to him sincerely.[ij]
19 He satisfies the desire[ik] of his loyal followers;[il]
he hears their cry for help and delivers them.
20 The Lord protects all those who love him,
but he destroys all the wicked.
21 My mouth will praise the Lord.[im]
Let all who live[in] praise his holy name forever.
Psalm 146[io]
146 Praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord, O my soul.
2 I will praise the Lord as long as I live.
I will sing praises to my God as long as I exist.
3 Do not trust in princes,
or in human beings, who cannot deliver.[ip]
4 Their life’s breath departs, they return to the ground.
On that day their plans die.[iq]
5 How blessed is the one whose helper is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God,
6 the one who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who remains forever faithful,[ir]
7 vindicates the oppressed,[is]
and gives food to the hungry.
The Lord releases the imprisoned.
8 The Lord gives sight to the blind.
The Lord lifts up all who are bent over.[it]
The Lord loves the godly.
9 The Lord protects the resident foreigner.
He lifts up the fatherless and the widow,[iu]
but he opposes the wicked.[iv]
10 The Lord rules forever,
your God, O Zion, throughout the generations to come.[iw]
Praise the Lord!
Psalm 147[ix]

2 The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem,
and gathers the exiles of Israel.
3 He heals[iz] the brokenhearted,
and bandages their wounds.
4 He counts the number of the stars;
he names all of them.
5 Our Lord is great and has awesome power;[ja]
there is no limit to his wisdom.[jb]
6 The Lord lifts up the oppressed,
but knocks[jc] the wicked to the ground.
7 Offer to the Lord a song of thanks.[jd]
Sing praises to our God to the accompaniment of a harp.
8 He covers[je] the sky with clouds,
provides the earth with rain,
and causes grass to grow on the hillsides.[jf]
9 He gives food to the animals,
and to the young ravens when they chirp.[jg]
10 He is not enamored with the strength of a horse,
nor is he impressed by the warrior’s strong legs.[jh]
11 The Lord takes delight in his faithful followers,[ji]
and in those who wait for his loyal love.
12 Extol the Lord, O Jerusalem.
Praise your God, O Zion.
13 For he makes the bars of your gates strong.
He blesses your children[jj] within you.
14 He[jk] brings peace to your territory.[jl]
He abundantly provides for you[jm] the best grain.
15 He[jn] sends his command through the earth;[jo]
swiftly his order reaches its destination.[jp]
16 He sends the snow that is white like wool;
he spreads the frost that is white like ashes.[jq]
17 He throws his hailstones[jr] like crumbs.
Who can withstand the cold wind he sends?[js]
18 He then orders it all to melt;[jt]
he breathes on it,[ju] and the water flows.
19 He proclaims his word to Jacob,
his statutes and regulations to Israel.
20 He has not done so with any other nation;
they are not aware of his regulations.

and you waters above the sky.[jz]
5 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for he gave the command and they came into existence.
6 He established them so they would endure;[ka]
he issued a decree that will not be revoked.[kb]
7 Praise the Lord from the earth,
you sea creatures and all you ocean depths,
8 O fire and hail, snow and clouds,[kc]
O stormy wind that carries out his orders,[kd]
9 you mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars,
10 you animals and all you cattle,
you creeping things and birds,
11 you kings of the earth and all you nations,
you princes and all you leaders[ke] on the earth,
12 you young men and young women,
you elderly, along with you children.
13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted;
his majesty extends over the earth and sky.
14 He has made his people victorious,[kf]
and given all his loyal followers reason to praise—
the Israelites, the people who are close to him.[kg]
Praise the Lord!
Psalm 149[kh]

2 Let Israel rejoice in their Creator.
Let the people[kj] of Zion delight in their King.[kk]

Let them sing praises to him to the accompaniment of the tambourine and harp.
4 For the Lord takes delight in his people;
he exalts the oppressed by delivering them.[kl]
5 Let the godly rejoice because of their vindication.[km]
Let them shout for joy upon their beds.[kn]
6 May the praises of God be in their mouths
and a two-edged sword in their hands,
7 in order to take[ko] revenge on the nations,
and punish foreigners.
8 The godly bind[kp] their enemies’ kings in chains,
and their nobles in iron shackles,
9 and execute the judgment to which their enemies[kq] have been sentenced.[kr]
All his loyal followers will be vindicated.[ks]
Praise the Lord.

praise him with the lyre and the harp!
4 Praise him with the tambourine and with dancing;
praise him with stringed instruments and the flute!
5 Praise him with loud cymbals;
praise him with clanging cymbals!
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!
Introduction to the Book
1 The proverbs[kv] of Solomon,[kw] son of David, king of Israel:
2 To[kx] learn[ky] wisdom[kz] and moral instruction,[la]
to discern[lb] wise counsel.[lc]
3 To receive[ld] moral instruction[le] in skillful living,[lf]
with[lg] righteousness,[lh] justice,[li] and equity.[lj]
4 To impart[lk] shrewdness[ll] to the morally naive,[lm]
a discerning[ln] plan[lo] to the young person.[lp]
5 (Let the wise also[lq] hear[lr] and gain[ls] instruction,
and let the discerning[lt] acquire guidance![lu])
6 To discern[lv] the meaning of[lw] a proverb and a parable,[lx]
the sayings of the wise[ly] and their riddles.[lz]
Introduction to the Theme of the Book
7 Fearing the Lord[ma] is the beginning[mb] of discernment,[mc]
but[md] fools[me] have despised[mf] wisdom and moral instruction.[mg]
8 Listen,[mh] my child,[mi] to the instruction[mj] from[mk] your father,
and do not forsake the teaching[ml] from[mm] your mother.
9 For they will be like[mn] an elegant[mo] garland[mp] on[mq] your head,
and like[mr] pendants[ms] around[mt] your neck.
Admonition to Avoid Easy but Unjust Riches
10 My child, if sinners[mu] try to entice[mv] you,
do not consent![mw]
11 If they say, “Come with us!
We will[mx] lie in wait[my] to shed blood;[mz]
we will ambush[na] an innocent person[nb] capriciously.[nc]
12 We will swallow them alive[nd] like Sheol,[ne]
those full of vigor[nf] like those going down to the Pit.
13 We will seize[ng] all kinds of precious wealth;[nh]
we will fill our houses with plunder.[ni]
14 Join with us![nj]
We will all share[nk] equally in what we steal.”[nl]
15 My child, do not go down[nm] their way,[nn]
withhold yourself[no] from their path;[np]
16 for they[nq] are eager[nr] to inflict harm,[ns]
and they hasten[nt] to shed blood.[nu]
17 Surely it is futile to spread[nv] a net
in plain sight of[nw] any bird,[nx]
18 but these men lie in wait for their own blood,[ny]
they ambush their own lives![nz]
19 Such[oa] are the ways[ob] of all who gain profit unjustly;[oc]
it[od] takes away the life[oe] of those who obtain it![of]
Warning Against Disregarding Wisdom
20 Wisdom[og] calls out[oh] in the street,
she shouts loudly[oi] in the plazas;[oj]
21 at the head of the noisy streets[ok] she calls,
in the entrances of the gates in the city[ol] she utters her words:[om]
22 “How long will you simpletons[on] love naiveté?[oo]
How long[op] have mockers[oq] delighted in[or] mockery?[os]
And how long[ot] will fools[ou] hate knowledge?
23 You should respond to[ov] my rebuke.[ow]
Then[ox] I would pour out[oy] my thoughts[oz] to you;
I would make[pa] my words known to you.
24 However,[pb] because[pc] I called but you refused to listen,[pd]
because[pe] I stretched out my hand[pf] but no one was paying attention,[pg]
25 and you neglected[ph] all my advice,
and did not comply[pi] with my rebuke,
26 so[pj] I myself will laugh[pk] when disaster strikes you,[pl]
I will mock when what you dread[pm] comes,
27 when what you dread[pn] comes like a whirlwind,[po]
and disaster strikes you[pp] like a devastating storm,[pq]
when distressing trouble[pr] comes on you.
28 Then they will call to me, but I will not answer;
they will diligently seek[ps] me, but they will not find me.
29 Because[pt] they hated moral knowledge,[pu]
and did not choose to fear the Lord,[pv]
30 they did not comply with my advice,
they spurned[pw] all my rebuke.
31 Therefore[px] they will eat from the fruit[py] of their way,[pz]
and they will be stuffed full[qa] of their own counsel.
32 For the waywardness[qb] of the
simpletons will kill[qc] them,
and the careless ease[qd] of fools will destroy them.
33 But the one who listens[qe] to me will live in security,[qf]
and will be at ease[qg] from the dread of harm.”
Benefits of Seeking Wisdom[qh]
2 My child,[qi] if[qj] you receive my words,
and store up[qk] my commands inside yourself,[ql]
2 by making[qm] your ear[qn] attentive to wisdom,
and[qo] by turning[qp] your heart[qq] to understanding,
3 indeed, if[qr] you call out for discernment[qs]—
shout loudly[qt] for understanding—
4 if[qu] you seek[qv] it like silver,[qw]
and search for it[qx] like hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand[qy] how to fear the Lord,[qz]
and you will discover[ra] knowledge[rb] about God.[rc]
6 For[rd] the Lord gives[re] wisdom,
and from his mouth[rf] comes[rg] knowledge and understanding.
7 He stores up[rh] effective counsel[ri] for the upright,[rj]
and is like[rk] a shield[rl] for those who live[rm] with integrity,[rn]
8 to guard[ro] the paths of the righteous[rp]
and to protect[rq] the way of his pious ones.[rr]
9 Then you will understand[rs] righteousness and justice
and equity—every[rt] good[ru] way.[rv]
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,[rw]
and moral knowledge[rx] will be attractive[ry] to you.[rz]
11 Discretion[sa] will protect you,[sb]
understanding will guard you,
12 to deliver[sc] you from the way of the wicked,[sd]
from those[se] speaking perversity,[sf]
13 who leave[sg] the upright[sh] paths
to walk on the dark[si] ways,
14 who delight[sj] in doing[sk] evil,[sl]
they rejoice in perverse evil;[sm]
15 whose paths[sn] are morally crooked,[so]
and who are devious[sp] in their ways;
16 to deliver you[sq] from the adulterous woman,[sr]
from the loose woman[ss] who has flattered[st] you with her words;[su]
17 who leaves[sv] the husband[sw] from her younger days,[sx]
and has ignored[sy] her marriage covenant[sz] made before God.[ta]
18 For she has set[tb] her house by death,
and her paths by the place of the departed spirits.[tc]
19 None who go in to her will return,[td]
nor will they reach the paths of life.[te]
20 So[tf] you will walk in the way of good people,[tg]
and will keep on the paths of the righteous.[th]
21 For the upright will reside in the land,
and those with integrity[ti] will remain in it,
22 but the wicked[tj] will be removed[tk] from the land,
and the treacherous[tl] will be torn away[tm] from it.
Exhortations to Seek Wisdom and Walk with the Lord[tn]
3 My child,[to] do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep[tp] my commandments,
2 for they will provide[tq] a long and full life,[tr]
and well-being[ts] for you.
3 Do not let mercy and truth[tt] leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.[tu]
4 Then you will find[tv] favor and good understanding,[tw]
in the sight of God and people.[tx]
5 Trust[ty] in the Lord with all your heart,[tz]
and do not rely[ua] on your own understanding.[ub]
6 Acknowledge[uc] him in all your ways,[ud]
and he will make your paths straight.[ue]
7 Do not be wise in your own estimation;[uf]
fear the Lord and turn away from evil.[ug]
8 This will bring[uh] healing to your body,[ui]
and refreshment[uj] to your inner self.[uk]
9 Honor[ul] the Lord from your wealth
and from the firstfruits of all your crops;[um]
10 then your barns will be filled completely,[un]
and your vats[uo] will overflow[up] with new wine.[uq]
11 My child, do not despise discipline from the Lord,[ur]
and do not loathe[us] his rebuke.
12 For the Lord disciplines[ut] those he loves,
just as a father[uu] disciplines[uv] the son in whom he delights.
Blessings of Obtaining Wisdom
13 Blessed[uw] is the one[ux] who has found[uy] wisdom,
and the one who obtains[uz] understanding.
14 For her[va] benefit[vb] is more profitable[vc] than silver,
and her[vd] gain[ve] is better[vf] than gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies,
and none of the things you desire can compare[vg] with her.[vh]
16 Long life[vi] is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are very pleasant,[vj]
and all her paths are peaceful.
18 She is like[vk] a tree of life[vl] to those who grasp onto her,
and everyone who takes hold of her will be blessed.[vm]
19 By wisdom the Lord laid the foundation of the earth;[vn]
he established the heavens by understanding.[vo]
20 By his knowledge the primordial sea[vp] was broken open,[vq]
so that the clouds drip down dew.[vr]
21 My child, do not let them[vs] escape from your sight;
safeguard sound wisdom and discretion.[vt]
22 So they will become life for your soul,[vu]
and grace around your neck.[vv]
23 Then you will walk on your way with security,
and you will not stumble.[vw]
24 When[vx] you lie down[vy] you will not be filled with fear;[vz]
when you lie down your sleep will be pleasant.[wa]
25 Do not be afraid[wb] of sudden[wc] disaster,[wd]
or when destruction overtakes the wicked;[we]
26 for the Lord will be the source of your confidence,[wf]
and he will guard your foot[wg] from being caught in a trap.[wh]
Wisdom Demonstrated in Relationships with People
27 Do not withhold good from those who need it,[wi]
when you[wj] have the ability[wk] to help.[wl]
28 Do not say to your neighbor, “Go! Return tomorrow
and I will give it,” when you have it with you at the time.[wm]
29 Do not plot[wn] evil against your neighbor
when[wo] he dwells by you unsuspectingly.
30 Do not accuse[wp] anyone[wq] without legitimate cause,[wr]
if he has not treated you wrongly.
31 Do not envy a violent man,[ws]
and do not choose any of his ways;
32 for one who goes astray[wt] is an abomination[wu] to the Lord,
but he reveals[wv] his intimate counsel[ww] to the upright.
33 The Lord’s curse[wx] is on the household[wy] of the wicked,[wz]
but he blesses[xa] the home[xb] of the righteous.[xc]
34 With[xd] arrogant scoffers[xe] he is scornful,
yet he shows favor to the humble.[xf]
35 The wise inherit honor,
but he holds fools up to[xg] public contempt.[xh]
Admonition to Follow Righteousness and Avoid Wickedness[xi]
4 Listen, children,[xj] to a father’s instruction,[xk]
and pay attention so that you may gain[xl] discernment.
2 Because I hereby give[xm] you good instruction,
do not forsake my teaching.
3 When I was a son to my father,[xn]
a tender, only child[xo] before my mother,
4 he taught me, and he said to me:
“Let your heart lay hold of my words;
keep my commands so that[xp] you will live.
5 Acquire wisdom, acquire understanding;
do not forget and do not turn aside from the words I speak.[xq]
6 Do not forsake wisdom,[xr] and she will protect you;
love her, and she will guard you.
7 Wisdom is supreme[xs]—so[xt] acquire wisdom,
and whatever you acquire,[xu] acquire understanding![xv]
8 Esteem her highly[xw] and she will exalt you;
she will honor you if you embrace her.
9 She will place a fair[xx] garland on your head;
she will bestow a beautiful crown[xy] on you.”
10 Listen, my child,[xz] and accept my words,
so that[ya] the years of your life will be many.[yb]
11 I hereby guide you[yc] in the way of wisdom
and I lead you in upright paths.[yd]
12 When you walk, your steps[ye] will not be hampered,[yf]
and when you run,[yg] you will not stumble.
13 Hold on to instruction,[yh] do not let it go;
protect it,[yi] because it is your life.
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked
or walk[yj] in the way of those who are evil.
15 Avoid it, do not go on it;
turn away from it, and go on.[yk]
16 For they cannot sleep[yl] unless they cause harm;[ym]
they are robbed of sleep[yn] until they make someone stumble.[yo]
17 Indeed they have eaten[yp] bread gained from wickedness[yq]
and drink[yr] wine obtained from violence.[ys]
18 But the path of the righteous is like the bright morning light,[yt]
growing brighter and brighter[yu] until full day.[yv]
19 The way of the wicked is like gloomy darkness;
they do not know what they stumble over.[yw]
20 My child, pay attention to my words;
listen attentively[yx] to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart[yy] from your sight,
guard[yz] them within your heart;[za]
22 for they are life to those who find them
and healing to one’s entire body.[zb]
23 Guard your heart[zc] with all vigilance,[zd]
for from it are the sources[ze] of life.
24 Remove perverse speech[zf] from your mouth;[zg]
keep devious talk far from your lips.[zh]
25 Let your eyes look directly[zi] in front of you
and let your gaze[zj] look straight before you.
26 Make the path for your feet[zk] level,[zl]
so that[zm] all your ways may be established.[zn]
27 Do not turn[zo] to the right or to the left;
turn yourself[zp] away from evil.[zq]
Admonition to Avoid Seduction to Evil[zr]
5 My child,[zs] be attentive to my wisdom,
pay close attention[zt] to my understanding,
2 in order to safeguard[zu] discretion,[zv]
and that your lips may guard knowledge.
3 For the lips[zw] of the adulterous woman drip honey,
and her seductive words[zx] are smoother than olive oil,
4 but in the end[zy] she is bitter[zz] as wormwood,[aaa]
sharp as a two-edged[aab] sword.
5 Her feet go down to death;
her steps lead straight to the grave.[aac]
6 Lest[aad] she should make level[aae] the path leading to life,[aaf]
her paths have wandered,[aag] but she is not able to discern it.[aah]
7 So now, children,[aai] listen to me;
do not turn aside from the words I speak.[aaj]
8 Keep yourself[aak] far[aal] from her,
and do not go near the door of her house,
9 lest you give your vigor[aam] to others
and your years to a cruel person,
10 lest strangers devour[aan] your strength,[aao]
and your labor[aap] benefit[aaq] another man’s house.
11 And at the end of your life[aar] you will groan[aas]
when your flesh and your body are wasted away.[aat]
12 And you will say, “How I hated discipline!
My heart spurned reproof!
13 For[aau] I did not obey[aav] my teachers[aaw]
and I did not heed[aax] my instructors.[aay]
14 I almost[aaz] came to complete ruin[aba]
in the midst of the whole congregation!”[abb]
15 Drink water from your own cistern
and running water from your own well.[abc]
16 Should your springs be dispersed[abd] outside,
your streams of water in the wide plazas?[abe]
17 Let them be for yourself[abf] alone,
and not for strangers with you.[abg]
18 May your fountain be blessed,[abh]
and may you rejoice[abi] in the wife you married in your youth[abj]—
19 a loving doe,[abk] a graceful deer;
may her breasts satisfy you at all times,
may you be captivated[abl] by her love always.
20 But why should you be captivated,[abm] my son, by an adulteress,
and embrace the bosom of a different woman?[abn]
21 For the ways of a person[abo] are in front of the Lord’s eyes,
and the Lord[abp] weighs[abq] all that person’s[abr] paths.
22 The wicked[abs] will be captured by his[abt] own iniquities,[abu]
and he will be held[abv] by the cords of his own sin.[abw]
23 He will die because[abx] there was no discipline;
because of the greatness of his folly[aby] he will reel.[abz]
Admonitions and Warnings against Dangerous and Destructive Acts[aca]
6 My child,[acb] if you have made a pledge[acc] for your neighbor,[acd]
if[ace] you have become a guarantor[acf] for a stranger,[acg]
2 if[ach] you have been ensnared[aci] by the words you have uttered,[acj]
and have been caught by the words you have spoken,
3 then, my child, do this in order to deliver yourself,[ack]
because you have fallen into your neighbor’s power:[acl]
Go, humble yourself,[acm]
and appeal firmly to[acn] your neighbor.
4 Permit no sleep to your eyes[aco]
or slumber to your eyelids.
5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from a snare,[acp]
and like a bird from the trap[acq] of the fowler.
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;[acr]
observe her[acs] ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
overseer, or[act] ruler,
8 yet it would prepare[acu] its food in the summer;
it gathered at the harvest what it will eat.[acv]
9 How long, you sluggard, will you lie there?
When will you rise from your sleep?[acw]
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to relax,[acx]
11 and your poverty will come like a robber,[acy]
and your need like an armed man.[acz]
12 A worthless and wicked person[ada]
walks around saying perverse things;[adb] [adc]
13 he winks with his eyes,
signals with his feet,
and points with his fingers;[add]
14 he plots evil with perverse thoughts[ade] in his heart,
he spreads contention[adf] at all times.
15 Therefore, his disaster will come suddenly;
in an instant[adg] he will be broken, and there will be no remedy.
16 There are six things that the Lord hates,
even[adh] seven[adi] things that are an abomination to him:[adj]
17 haughty eyes,[adk] a lying tongue,[adl]
and hands that shed innocent blood,[adm]
18 a heart that devises wicked plans,[adn]
feet that are swift to run[ado] to evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies,[adp]
and a person who spreads discord[adq] among family members.[adr]
20 My child,[ads] guard the commands of your father
and do not forsake the instruction of your mother.
21 Bind them[adt] on your heart[adu] continually;
fasten them around your neck.
22 When you walk about,[adv] they[adw] will guide you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
when you wake up,[adx] they will talk[ady] to you.
23 For the commandments[adz] are like[aea] a lamp,[aeb]
instruction is like a light,
and rebukes of discipline are like[aec] the road leading to life,[aed]
24 by keeping[aee] you from the evil woman,[aef]
from the smooth tongue of[aeg] the loose woman.[aeh]
25 Do not lust[aei] in your heart for her beauty,
and do not let her captivate you with her alluring eyes;[aej]
26 for on account of[aek] a prostitute one is brought down to a loaf of bread,
but the wife of another man[ael] preys on your precious life.[aem]
27 Can a man hold[aen] fire[aeo] against his chest[aep]
without[aeq] burning his clothes?
28 Can[aer] a man walk on hot coals
without scorching his feet?
29 So it is with[aes] the one who sleeps with[aet] his neighbor’s wife;
no one[aeu] who touches[aev] her will escape punishment.[aew] [aex]
30 People[aey] do not despise a thief when he steals
to fulfill his need[aez] when he is hungry.
31 Yet[afa] if he is caught[afb] he must repay[afc] seven times over,
he might even have to give[afd] all the wealth of his house.
32 A man who commits adultery with a woman lacks sense,[afe]
whoever does it destroys his own life.[aff]
33 He will be beaten and despised,[afg]
and his reproach will not be wiped away;[afh]
34 for jealousy kindles[afi] a husband’s[afj] rage,
and he will not show mercy[afk] when he takes revenge.
35 He will not consider[afl] any compensation;[afm]
he will not be willing, even if you multiply the compensation.[afn]
