Book of Common Prayer
33 He [a](A)makes rivers into a [b]wilderness
And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
34 A (B)fruitful land into a (C)salt waste,
Because of the evil of those who inhabited it.
35 He (D)makes a wilderness into a pool of water
And a dry land into springs of water;
36 And there He causes the hungry to inhabit,
So that they may establish (E)an inhabited city,
37 And sow fields and (F)plant vineyards,
And produce a fruitful harvest.
38 Also He blesses them and they (G)multiply greatly,
And He (H)does not let their cattle decrease.
39 But when they (I)decrease and are (J)bowed down
Through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
40 He (K)pours contempt upon nobles
And (L)makes them wander (M)in a pathless void.
41 But He (N)sets the needy [c]securely on high away from affliction,
And (O)makes his families like a flock.
42 The (P)upright see it and are glad;
But all (Q)unrighteousness shuts its mouth.
43 Who is (R)wise? Let him keep these things,
And carefully consider the (S)lovingkindnesses of Yahweh.
He Will Tread Down Our Adversaries
A Song. A Psalm of David.
108 (T)My heart is set, O God;
I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my glory.
2 Awake, harp and lyre;
I will awaken the dawn!
3 I will give thanks to You, O Yahweh, among the peoples,
And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
4 For Your (U)lovingkindness is great (V)above the heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the skies.
5 (W)Be exalted above the heavens, O God,
And Your glory above all the earth.
6 (X)That Your beloved may be rescued,
Save with Your right hand, and answer me!
7 God has spoken in His [d]holiness:
“I will exult, I will portion out Shechem
And measure out the valley of Succoth.
8 Gilead is Mine, Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the [e]helmet of My head;
(Y)Judah is My [f]scepter.
9 Moab is My washbowl;
Over Edom I shall throw My shoe;
Over Philistia I will make a loud shout.”
10 (Z)Who will bring me into the well-defended city?
Who [g]will lead me to Edom?
11 Have You, O God, not (AA)rejected us?
And will You, O God, not go forth with our armies?
12 Oh give us help against the adversary,
For (AB)salvation [h]by man is worthless.
13 [i]Through God we shall do valiantly,
And (AC)it is He who will tread down our adversaries.
Yahweh Is Our Help and Our Shield
33 (A)Sing for joy in Yahweh, O righteous ones;
Praise is (B)becoming to the upright.
2 Give thanks to Yahweh with the (C)lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a (D)harp of ten strings.
3 Sing to Him a (E)new song;
Play skillfully with (F)a loud shout.
4 For the word of Yahweh (G)is upright,
And all His work is done (H)in faithfulness.
5 He (I)loves righteousness and justice;
The (J)earth is full of the lovingkindness of Yahweh.
6 By the (K)word of Yahweh the heavens were made,
And (L)by the breath of His mouth (M)all their host.
7 He gathers the (N)waters of the sea [a]as a heap;
He lays up the deeps in storehouses.
8 Let (O)all the earth fear Yahweh;
Let all the inhabitants of the world (P)stand in awe of Him.
9 For (Q)He spoke, and it was;
He commanded, and it [b]stood.
10 Yahweh (R)nullifies the counsel of the nations;
He frustrates the thoughts of the peoples.
11 The (S)counsel of Yahweh stands forever,
The (T)thoughts of His heart from generation to generation.
12 Blessed is the (U)nation whose God is Yahweh,
The people whom He has (V)chosen for His own inheritance.
13 Yahweh (W)looks from heaven;
He (X)sees all the sons of men;
14 From (Y)the place of His habitation He gazes
On all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 He who (Z)forms [c]the hearts of them all,
He who (AA)understands all their works.
16 (AB)The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not delivered by great strength.
17 A (AC)horse is a false hope for salvation;
Nor does it provide escape to anyone by its great strength.
18 Behold, (AD)the eye of Yahweh is on those who fear Him,
On those who (AE)wait for His lovingkindness,
19 To (AF)deliver their soul from death
And to keep them alive (AG)in famine.
20 Our soul (AH)is patient for Yahweh;
He is our (AI)help and our shield.
21 For our (AJ)heart is glad in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
22 Let Your lovingkindness, O Yahweh, be upon us,
As we wait for You.
Heaven Is Yahweh’s Throne
66 Thus says Yahweh,
“(A)Heaven is My throne, and the earth is the footstool of My feet.
Where then is a (B)house you could build for Me?
And where is a place that [a]I may rest?
2 For (C)My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being,” declares Yahweh.
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and (D)contrite of spirit, and who (E)trembles at My word.
3 “But he who slaughters an ox is the one who strikes down a man;
He who sacrifices a lamb is the one who breaks a dog’s neck;
He who offers a grain offering is the one who offers (F)swine’s blood;
He who (G)offers a memorial offering of frankincense is the one who blesses wickedness.
As they have chosen their (H)own ways,
And their soul takes pleasure in their (I)detestable things,
4 So I will (J)choose their [b]punishments
And will (K)bring on them what they dread,
Because I called, but (L)no one answered;
I spoke, but they did not listen.
And they did what was (M)evil in My eyes
And chose that in which I did not take pleasure.”
5 Hear the word of Yahweh, you who (N)tremble at His word:
“Your brothers who (O)hate you, who (P)exclude you for My name’s sake,
Have said, ‘Let Yahweh be glorified, that we may see your gladness.’
But (Q)they will be put to shame.
6 A voice of rumbling from the city, a voice from the temple,
The voice of Yahweh who is (R)paying recompense to His enemies.
6 (A)But godliness actually is a means of (B)great gain, when accompanied by (C)contentment. 7 For (D)we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8 And if we (E)have food and covering, with these we shall be content. 9 (F)But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and (G)a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For (H)the love of money is a root of all [a]sorts of evils, and some by aspiring to it have (I)wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
11 But you, O (J)man of God, (K)flee from these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, (L)faith, (M)love, [b]perseverance, gentleness. 12 (N)Fight the good fight of (O)faith. (P)Take hold of the eternal life (Q)to which you were called, and you made the good (R)confession in the presence of (S)many witnesses. 13 (T)I charge you in the presence of God, who [c]gives life to all things, and of (U)Christ Jesus, who testified the (V)good confession (W)before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the (X)appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which He will [d]bring about at (Y)the proper time—He who is (Z)the blessed and (AA)only Sovereign, (AB)the King of [e]kings and (AC)Lord of [f]lords, 16 (AD)who alone has immortality and (AE)dwells in unapproachable light, (AF)whom no man has seen or can see. (AG)To Him be honor and eternal might! Amen.
17 Command those who are rich in (AH)this present age (AI)not to be haughty or to (AJ)set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, (AK)who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in (AL)good [g]works, (AM)to be generous and ready to share, 19 (AN)storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may (AO)take hold of that which is life indeed.
20 O (AP)Timothy, guard (AQ)what has been entrusted to you, turning aside from (AR)godless and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 which some, while professing, have (AS)gone astray [h]from (AT)the faith.
35 (A)And Jesus began to say, as He (B)taught in the temple, “How is it that the scribes say that the [a]Christ is the (C)son of David? 36 David himself said [b]in the Holy Spirit,
37 David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; so in what sense is He his son?” And (E)the large crowd [d]enjoyed listening to Him.
38 (F)And in His teaching He was saying: “Beware of the scribes who want to walk around in long robes, and want (G)respectful greetings in the marketplaces, 39 and best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 40 (H)who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation.”
The Widow’s Offering
41 (I)And He sat down opposite (J)the treasury, and began observing how the crowd was (K)putting [e]money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two [f]lepta, which amount to a [g]quadrans. 43 And calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all those putting money into the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their [h]surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, [i]all she had (L)to live on.”
