Book of Common Prayer
God Judges with Equity
For the choir director. [a]Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph. [b]A Song.
75 We (A)give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks,
For Your name is (B)near;
Men recount (C)Your wondrous deeds.
2 “For I select an (D)appointed time,
It is I who (E)judge with equity.
3 The (F)earth and all who dwell in it [c]melt;
It is I who have firmly set its (G)pillars. [d]Selah.
4 I said to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
And to the wicked, ‘(H)Do not raise up the horn;
5 Do not raise up your horn on high,
(I)Nor speak with insolent [e]pride.’”
6 For one’s rising up does not come from the east, nor from the west,
And not from the [f](J)desert;
7 But (K)God is the Judge;
He (L)puts down one and raises up another.
8 For a (M)cup is in the hand of Yahweh, and the wine foams;
It is (N)full of His mixture, and He pours from this;
Surely all the wicked of the earth must drain and (O)drink down its dregs.
9 But as for me, I will (P)declare it forever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 And all the (Q)horns of the wicked I will cut off,
But (R)the horns of the righteous will be raised up.
God’s Name Is Great in Israel
For the choir director. With stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.
76 God is (S)known in Judah;
His name is (T)great in Israel.
2 So His [g](U)tabernacle is in (V)Salem;
His (W)dwelling place is in Zion.
3 There He (X)broke the [h]flaming arrows,
The shield and the sword and the battle. [i]Selah.
4 You are shining,
Majestic from the mountains of prey.
5 The (Y)stouthearted were plundered,
[j]They sank into sleep;
And none of the [k]warriors could use his hands.
6 At Your (Z)rebuke, O God of Jacob,
Both (AA)chariot rider and horse slumbered into a deep sleep.
7 But You, You are [l](AB)fearsome;
And (AC)who can stand in Your presence when once [m]You are angry?
Yahweh Is My Shepherd
A Psalm of David.
23 Yahweh is my (A)shepherd,
I [a]shall (B)not want.
2 He makes me lie down in (C)green pastures;
He (D)leads me beside [b](E)quiet waters.
3 He (F)restores my soul;
He (G)guides me in the [c](H)paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Even though I (I)walk through the [d]valley of the shadow of death,
I (J)fear no [e]evil, for (K)You are with me;
Your (L)rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You (M)prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You [f]have (N)anointed my head with oil;
My (O)cup overflows.
6 [g]Surely (P)goodness and lovingkindness will [h]pursue me all the days of my life,
And I will [i](Q)dwell in the house of Yahweh [j]forever.
Yahweh Is My Light and My Salvation
Of David.
27 Yahweh is my (A)light and my (B)salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
Yahweh is the [a](C)strong defense of my life;
(D)Whom shall I dread?
2 When evildoers came upon me to (E)devour my flesh,
My adversaries and my enemies, they (F)stumbled and fell.
3 Though a (G)host encamp against me,
My heart will not fear;
Though war arise against me,
In this I (H)trust.
4 (I)One thing I have asked from Yahweh, that I shall seek:
That I may (J)dwell in the house of Yahweh all the days of my life,
To behold (K)the [b]beauty of Yahweh
And to (L)inquire in His temple.
5 For in the (M)day of calamity He will (N)conceal me in His shelter;
In the secret place of His tent He will (O)hide me;
He will (P)lift me up on a rock.
6 And now (Q)my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me,
And I will offer in His tent (R)sacrifices with loud shouts of joy;
I will (S)sing, and I will sing praises to Yahweh.
7 (T)Hear, O Yahweh, when I call with my voice,
And be gracious to me and (U)answer me.
8 On Your behalf my heart says, “(V)Seek My face,”
“Your face, O Yahweh, (W)I shall seek.”
9 (X)Do not hide Your face from me,
Do not turn Your slave away in (Y)anger;
You have been (Z)my help;
(AA)Do not abandon me and do not (AB)forsake me,
O God of my salvation!
10 [c]For my father and (AC)my mother have forsaken me,
But (AD)Yahweh will take me up.
11 (AE)Instruct me in Your way, O Yahweh,
And lead me in a (AF)level path
Because of [d]my foes.
12 Do not give me over to the [e](AG)desire of my adversaries,
For (AH)false witnesses have risen against me,
And such as (AI)breathe out violence.
13 [f]I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the (AJ)goodness of Yahweh
In the (AK)land of the living.
14 (AL)Hope in Yahweh;
Be (AM)strong and let your heart take courage;
Hope in Yahweh.
28 Then (A)the young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things. 29 Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was (B)Laban; and Laban ran outside to the man at the spring. 30 Now it happened, when he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s [a]wrists, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “[b]This is what the man said to me,” he came out to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 And he said, “(C)Come in, (D)blessed of Yahweh! Why do you stand outside since (E)I have prepared the house and a place for the camels?” 32 So the man came into the house. Then [c](F)Laban unloaded the camels, and he gave straw and feed to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Then food was set before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat until I have spoken my words.” And he said, “Speak!” 34 So he said, “I am (G)Abraham’s servant. 35 And Yahweh has greatly (H)blessed my master, so he has become great; and He has given him (I)flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and male slaves and female slaves, and camels and donkeys. 36 Now (J)Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master [d]in her old age, and (K)he has given him all that he has. 37 (L)And my master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I [e]live; 38 but you shall go to my father’s house and to my family, and take a wife for my son.’
49 So now if you are going to (A)show lovingkindness and truth with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right or to the left.”
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “(B)The matter comes from Yahweh; (C)so we cannot speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as Yahweh has spoken.”
12 Therefore, [a](A)strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, 13 and (B)make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather (C)be healed.
14 (D)Pursue peace with all men, and the (E)sanctification without which no one will (F)see the Lord, 15 seeing to it that no one (G)falls short of the grace of God; that no (H)root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be (I)defiled; 16 that also there be no (J)sexually immoral or (K)godless person like Esau, (L)who sold his own birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that even afterwards, (M)when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.
Contrast of Sinai and Zion
18 (N)For you have not come to (O)a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind, 19 and to the (P)blast of a trumpet and the (Q)sound of words which was such that those who heard (R)begged that no further word be spoken to them. 20 For they could not bear what was being commanded, “(S)If even a beast touches the mountain, it will be stoned.” 21 And so terrible was what appeared, that Moses said, “(T)I am full of fear and trembling.” 22 But (U)you have come to Mount Zion and to (V)the city of (W)the living God, (X)the heavenly Jerusalem, and to (Y)myriads of [b]angels, 23 to the festal gathering and (Z)assembly of the firstborn who (AA)are enrolled in heaven, and to God, (AB)the Judge of all, and to the (AC)spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the (AD)mediator of a new covenant, and to the (AE)sprinkled blood, which speaks better than (AF)the blood of Abel.
An Unshakable Kingdom
25 (AG)See to it that you do not refuse Him who is (AH)speaking. For (AI)if those did not escape when they (AJ)refused him who (AK)warned them on earth, [c]much less will we escape who turn away from Him who (AL)warns from heaven. 26 And (AM)His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “(AN)Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.” 27 Now this expression, “Yet once more,” indicates (AO)the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a (AP)kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us [d]show gratitude, by which we may (AQ)offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; 29 for (AR)our God is a consuming fire.
14 But when it was now the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to (A)teach. 15 (B)The Jews then were marveling, saying, “How has this man (C)become learned, not having been educated?” 16 So Jesus answered them and said, “(D)My teaching is not Mine, but from Him who sent Me. 17 (E)If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is of God or I speak from Myself. 18 He who speaks from himself (F)seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
19 “(G)Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet none of you does the Law. Why do you (H)seek to kill Me?” 20 The crowd answered, “(I)You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did (J)one work, and you all marvel. 22 For this reason (K)Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from (L)the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23 (M)If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? 24 Do not (N)judge according to appearance, but [a]judge with righteous judgment.”
25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill? 26 And look, He is speaking openly, and they are saying nothing to Him. (O)Do the rulers truly know that this is the [b]Christ? 27 However, (P)we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” 28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, (Q)teaching and saying, “(R)You both know Me and know where I am from; and (S)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 (T)I know Him, because (U)I am from Him, and (V)He sent Me.” 30 So they (W)were seeking to seize Him; [c]yet no man laid his hand on Him, because His (X)hour had not yet come. 31 But (Y)many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “(Z)When the [d]Christ comes, will He do more [e](AA)signs than this man did?”
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd [f]whispering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent (AB)officers to (AC)seize Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, “(AD)For a little while longer I am with you, then (AE)I go to Him who sent Me. 34 (AF)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 (AG)The Jews then said to one another, “(AH)Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? Is He intending to go to (AI)the Dispersion among (AJ)the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this statement that He said, ‘(AK)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”
