Psalm 55

Psalm 55[a]

For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song[b] by David.

55 Listen, O God, to my prayer.
Do not ignore[c] my appeal for mercy.
Pay attention to me and answer me.
I am so upset[d] and distressed,[e] I am beside myself,[f]
because of what the enemy says,[g]
and because of how the wicked[h] pressure me,[i]
for they hurl trouble[j] down upon me[k]
and angrily attack me.
My heart beats violently[l] within me;
the horrors of death overcome me.[m]
Fear and panic overpower me;[n]
terror overwhelms[o] me.
I say,[p] “I wish I had wings like a dove.
I would fly away and settle in a safe place.
Look, I will escape to a distant place;
I will stay in the wilderness. (Selah)
I will hurry off to a place that is safe
from the strong wind[q] and the gale.”
Confuse them,[r] O Lord.
Frustrate their plans.[s]
For I see violence and conflict in the city.
10 Day and night they walk around on its walls,[t]
while wickedness and destruction[u] are within it.
11 Disaster is within it;
violence[v] and deceit do not depart from its public square.
12 Indeed,[w] it is not an enemy who insults me,
or else I could bear it;
it is not one who hates me who arrogantly taunts me,[x]
or else I could hide from him.
13 But it is you,[y] a man like me,[z]
my close friend in whom I confided.[aa]
14 We would share personal thoughts with each other;[ab]
in God’s temple we would walk together among the crowd.
15 May death destroy them.[ac]
May they go down alive into Sheol.[ad]
For evil is in their dwelling place and in their midst.
16 As for me, I will call out to God,
and the Lord will deliver me.
17 During the evening, morning, and noontime
I will lament and moan,[ae]
and he will hear[af] me.[ag]
18 He will rescue[ah] me and protect me from those who attack me,[ai]
even though[aj] they greatly outnumber me.[ak]
19 God, the one who has reigned as king from long ago,
will hear and humiliate them.[al] (Selah)
They refuse to change,
and do not fear God.[am]
20 He[an] attacks[ao] his friends;[ap]
he breaks his solemn promises to them.[aq]
21 His words are as smooth as butter,[ar]
but he harbors animosity in his heart.[as]
His words seem softer than oil,
but they are really like sharp swords.[at]
22 Throw your burden[au] upon the Lord,
and he will sustain you.[av]
He will never allow the godly to be shaken.[aw]
23 But you, O God, will bring them[ax] down to the deep Pit.[ay]
Violent and deceitful people[az] will not live even half a normal lifespan.[ba]
But as for me, I trust in you.

Psalm 74

Psalm 74[a]

A well-written song[b] by Asaph.

74 Why, O God, have you permanently rejected us?[c]
Why does your anger burn[d] against the sheep of your pasture?
Remember your people[e] whom you acquired in ancient times,
whom you rescued[f] so they could be your very own nation,[g]
as well as Mount Zion, where you dwell.
Hurry[h] to the permanent ruins,
and to all the damage the enemy has done to the temple.[i]
Your enemies roar[j] in the middle of your sanctuary;[k]
they set up their battle flags.[l]
They invade like lumberjacks
swinging their axes in a thick forest.[m]
And now[n] they are tearing down[o] all its engravings[p]
with axes[q] and crowbars.[r]
They set your sanctuary on fire;
they desecrate your dwelling place by knocking it to the ground.[s]
They say to themselves,[t]
“We will oppress all of them.”[u]
They burn down all the places in the land where people worship God.[v]
We do not see any signs of God’s presence;[w]
there are no longer any prophets,[x]
and we have no one to tell us how long this will last.[y]
10 How long, O God, will the adversary hurl insults?
Will the enemy blaspheme your name forever?
11 Why do you remain inactive?
Intervene and destroy him.[z]
12 But God has been my[aa] king from ancient times,
performing acts of deliverance on the earth.[ab]
13 You destroyed[ac] the sea by your strength;
you shattered the heads of the sea monster[ad] in the water.
14 You crushed the heads of Leviathan;[ae]
you fed[af] him to the people who live along the coast.[ag]
15 You broke open the spring and the stream;[ah]
you dried up perpetually flowing rivers.[ai]
16 You established the cycle of day and night;[aj]
you put the moon[ak] and sun in place.[al]
17 You set up all the boundaries[am] of the earth;
you created the cycle of summer and winter.[an]
18 Remember how[ao] the enemy hurls insults, O Lord,[ap]
and how a foolish nation blasphemes your name.
19 Do not hand the life of your dove[aq] over to a wild animal.
Do not continue to disregard[ar] the lives of your oppressed people.
20 Remember your covenant promises,[as]
for the dark regions of the earth are full of places where violence rules.[at]
21 Do not let the afflicted be turned back in shame.
Let the oppressed and poor praise your name.[au]
22 Rise up, O God. Defend your honor.[av]
Remember how fools insult you all day long.[aw]
23 Do not disregard[ax] what your enemies say,[ay]
or the unceasing shouts of those who defy you.[az]

Lamentations 2:1-9

א (Alef)

The Prophet Speaks

Alas![a] The Lord[b] has covered
Daughter Zion[c] with his anger.[d]
He has thrown down the splendor of Israel
from heaven to earth;
he did not protect[e] his temple[f]
when he displayed his anger.[g]

ב (Bet)

The Lord[h] destroyed[i] mercilessly[j]
all the homes of Jacob’s descendants.[k]
In his anger he tore down
the fortified cities[l] of Daughter Judah.
He knocked to the ground and humiliated
the kingdom and its rulers.[m]

ג (Gimel)

In fierce anger[n] he destroyed[o]
the whole army[p] of Israel.
He withdrew his right hand[q]
as the enemy attacked.[r]
He was like a raging fire in the land of Jacob;[s]
it consumed everything around it.[t]

ד (Dalet)

He prepared his bow[u] like an enemy;
his right hand was ready to shoot.[v]
Like a foe he killed everyone,
even our strong young men;[w]
he has poured out his anger like fire
on the tent[x] of Daughter Zion.

ה (He)

The Lord,[y] like an enemy,
destroyed[z] Israel.
He destroyed[aa] all her palaces;
he ruined her[ab] fortified cities.
He made everyone in Daughter Judah
mourn and lament.[ac]

ו (Vav)

He destroyed his temple[ad] as if it were a vineyard;[ae]
he destroyed his appointed meeting place.
The Lord has made those in Zion forget
both the festivals and the Sabbaths.[af]
In his fierce anger[ag] he has spurned[ah]
both king and priest.

ז (Zayin)

The Lord[ai] rejected[aj] his altar
and abhorred his temple.[ak]
He handed over to the enemy[al]
Jerusalem’s palace walls;
the enemy[am] shouted[an] in the Lord’s temple
as if it were a feast day.[ao]

ח (Khet)

The Lord was determined to tear down
Daughter Zion’s wall.
He prepared to knock it down;[ap]
he did not withdraw his hand from destroying.[aq]
He made the ramparts and fortified walls lament;
together they mourned their ruin.[ar]

ט (Tet)

Her city gates have fallen[as] to the ground;
he smashed to bits[at] the bars that lock her gates.[au]
Her king and princes were taken into exile;[av]
there is no more guidance available.[aw]
As for her prophets,
they no longer receive[ax] a vision from the Lord.

Lamentations 2:14-17

נ (Nun)

14 Your prophets saw visions for you
that were worthless whitewash.[a]
They failed to expose your sin
so as to restore your fortunes.[b]
They saw oracles for you
that were worthless[c] lies.

ס (Samek)

15 All who passed by on the road
clapped their hands to mock you.[d]
They sneered and shook their heads
at Daughter Jerusalem.
“Ha! Is this the city they called[e]
‘the perfection of beauty,[f]
the source of joy of the whole earth!’?”[g]

פ (Pe)

16 All your enemies
gloated over you.[h]
They sneered and gnashed their teeth;
they said, “We have destroyed[i] her!
Ha! We have waited a long time for this day.
We have lived to see it!”[j]

ע (Ayin)

17 The Lord has done what he planned;
he has fulfilled[k] his promise[l]
that he threatened[m] long ago:[n]
He has overthrown you without mercy[o]
and has enabled the enemy to gloat over you;
he has exalted your adversaries’ power.[p]

2 Corinthians 1:23-2:11

Why Paul Postponed His Visit

23 Now I appeal to God as my witness,[a] that to spare[b] you I did not come again to Corinth.[c] 24 I do not mean that we rule over your faith, but we are workers with you for your joy, because by faith you stand firm.[d] So[e] I made up my own mind[f] not to pay you another painful visit.[g] For if I make you sad, who would be left to make me glad[h] but the one I caused to be sad? And I wrote this very thing to you,[i] so that when I came[j] I would not have sadness from those who ought to make me rejoice, since I am confident in you all that my joy would be yours. For out of great distress and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not to make you sad, but to let you know the love that I have especially for you.[k] But if anyone has caused sadness, he has not saddened me alone, but to some extent (not to exaggerate)[l] he has saddened all of you as well. This punishment on such an individual by the majority is enough for him, so that now instead[m] you should rather forgive and comfort him.[n] This will keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive grief to the point of despair.[o] Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.[p] For this reason also I wrote you:[q] to test you to see[r] if you are obedient in everything. 10 If you forgive anyone for anything, I also forgive him—for indeed what I have forgiven (if I have forgiven anything) I did so for you in the presence of Christ, 11 so that we may not be exploited[s] by Satan (for we are not ignorant of his schemes).

Mark 12:1-11

The Parable of the Tenants

12 Then[a] he began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard.[b] He put a fence around it, dug a pit for its winepress, and built a watchtower. Then[c] he leased it to tenant farmers[d] and went on a journey. At harvest time he sent a slave[e] to the tenants to collect from them[f] his portion of the crop.[g] But[h] those tenants[i] seized his slave,[j] beat him,[k] and sent him away empty-handed.[l] So[m] he sent another slave to them again. This one they struck on the head and treated outrageously. He sent another, and that one they killed. This happened to many others, some of whom were beaten, others killed. He had one left, his one dear son.[n] Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and the inheritance will be ours!’ So[o] they seized him,[p] killed him, and threw his body[q] out of the vineyard.[r] What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy[s] those tenants and give the vineyard to others.[t] 10 Have you not read this scripture:

The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.[u]
11 This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”[v]
