Psalm 66

Praise God for What He Has Done

For the director of music. A song. A psalm.

66 Everything on earth, shout with joy to God!
    ·Sing [Make a psalm] about ·his glory [L the glory of his name]!
    Make his praise glorious!
Say to God, “Your works are ·amazing [majestic]!
    Because your power is great,
    your enemies ·fall [cringe; cower] before you.
All the earth ·worships [bows down to] you
    and ·sings praises to [makes a psalm for] you.
They ·sing praises to [make a psalm for] your name [Phil. 2:10–12].” ·Selah [Interlude]

Come and see what God has done,
    the ·amazing [majestic] things he has done for people.
He turned the sea into dry land [Ex. 14–15].
    The people crossed the river on foot [Josh. 3].
    So let us rejoice because of what he did.
He rules forever with his power.
    ·He keeps his eye [L His eyes keep watch] on the nations,
so ·people should not turn [the rebellious might not rise] against him. ·Selah [Interlude]

You people, ·praise [bless] our God;
    ·loudly sing his praise [L let the sound of his praise be heard].
He ·protects our lives [L sets our lives among the living]
    and does not let ·us be defeated [L our feet be moved].
10 God, you have ·tested [examined] us;
    you have ·purified [refined] us like silver [C removing the dross].
11 You ·let us be trapped [brought us into the net]
    and put ·a heavy load on us [L misery on our backs].
12 You let our enemies ·walk on [L ride over] our heads.
    We went through fire and ·flood [L water],
but you brought us to a place with ·good things [abundance].

13 I will come to your ·Temple [L house] with burnt offerings [Lev. 1:1–17].
    I will ·give you what I promised [repay my vows],
14     ·things I promised when I was in trouble [L which my lips poured out and my mouth said when I was in distress].
15 I will bring you burnt offerings [Lev. 1:1–17] of fat animals,
and ·I will offer sheep, bulls, and goats [L with the smoke of rams, I will offer bulls and goats]. ·Selah [Interlude]

16 All of you who fear God [Prov. 1:7], come and listen,
    and I will tell you what he has done for me.
17 I ·cried out [called] to him with my mouth
    and ·praised [exalted] him with my tongue.
18 If I had ·known of [L seen] any sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened to me.
19 But God has listened;
    he has ·heard [L paid attention to the sound of] my prayer.
20 ·Praise [Blessed be] God,
    who did not ·ignore [turn aside from] my prayer
or hold back his ·love [loyalty] from me.

Numbers 21:4-9

The Bronze Snake

The Israelites left Mount Hor and went on the road toward the ·Red [or Reed] Sea, in order to go around the country of Edom. But the people became impatient on the way and ·grumbled at [L spoke against] God and Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in this ·desert [wilderness]? There is no bread and no water, and we hate this terrible food!”

So the Lord sent them ·poisonous [L burning] snakes; they bit the people, and many of the ·Israelites [L people from Israel] died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we ·grumbled at [spoke against] you and the Lord. Pray that the Lord will take away these snakes.” So Moses prayed for the people.

The Lord said to Moses, “Make a bronze snake, and put it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, that person will live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Then when a snake bit anyone, that person looked at the bronze snake and lived [2 Kin. 18:4; John 3:14].

John 3:11-17

11 ·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], we talk about what we know, and we ·tell [testify; bear witness] about what we have seen, but you don’t ·accept what we tell you [L receive our testimony/witness]. 12 I have told you about things here on earth [C the teaching about being born again], and you do not believe me. ·So you will not [L So how will you…?] believe me if I tell you about things of heaven. 13 ·The only one who has ever gone up to heaven is [L No one has gone up into heaven except] the One who came down from heaven—the Son of Man[a] [C a title for the Messiah; Dan. 7:13–14].

14 “Just as Moses lifted up the ·snake [T serpent] in the ·desert [wilderness; C Moses put a bronze snake statue on a pole, and those who looked at it were healed of snake bites; Num. 21:4–9], the Son of Man must also be lifted up [C an allusion to the cross and resurrection]. 15 So that everyone who ·believes can have eternal life in him [or believes in him can have eternal life].

16 [L For] God loved the world so much that he gave his ·one and only [only; unique; T only begotten; 1:14, 18] Son so that whoever believes in him may not ·be lost [T perish], but have eternal life. 17 [L For; Indeed] God did not send his Son into the world to ·judge the world guilty [condemn the world], but to save the world through him.

Psalm 118

Thanksgiving for Victory

118 ·Thank [Praise] the Lord because he is good.
    His ·love [loyalty] ·continues [endures] forever.
Let Israel say,
    “His ·love [loyalty] ·continues [endures] forever.”
Let the ·family [L house] of Aaron [C the priests] say,
    “His ·love [loyalty] ·continues [endures] forever.”
Let those who ·respect [fear] the Lord [Prov. 1:7] say,
    “His ·love [loyalty] ·continues [endures] forever.”

I was in ·trouble [distress], so I ·called [prayed] to the Lord.
    The Lord answered me and set me ·free [L in a broad place].
I will not ·be afraid [fear], because the Lord is with me [Rom. 8:31].
    ·People can’t do anything [L What can people do…?] to me [Heb. 13:6].
The Lord is with me to help me,
    so I will ·see my enemies defeated [L look on my enemy; C in triumph].
It is better to ·trust [find refuge in] the Lord
    than to ·trust [have confidence in] people.
It is better to ·trust [find refuge in] the Lord
    than to ·trust [have confidence in] princes.

10 All the nations surrounded me,
    but I ·defeated them [warded them off] in the name of the Lord.
11 They surrounded me; they surrounded me on every side,
    but ·with the Lord’s power [L in the name of the Lord] I ·defeated them [warded them off].
12 They surrounded me like a swarm of bees,
    but they ·died [L were extinguished] as quickly as thorns burn.
    ·By the Lord’s power [L In the name of the Lord], I ·defeated them [warded them off].
13 They [or You] ·chased me [pushed me hard] until I ·was almost defeated [almost fell],
    but the Lord helped me.
14 The Lord ·gives me strength and a song [L is my strength and song/or might].
    He has ·saved me [given me victory].

15 Shouts of joy and victory
    come from the tents of ·those who do right [the righteous]:
    “The right hand of the Lord has done powerful things.”
16 The ·power [L right hand] of the Lord ·has won the victory [is exalted];
    with his ·power [L right hand] the Lord has done powerful things.

17 I will not die, but live,
    and I will ·tell [recount] what the Lord has done.
18 The Lord has ·taught me a hard lesson [L surely disciplined/instructed me],
    but he did not ·let me die [L give me over to death].

19 Open for me the ·Temple gates [L gates of righteousness].
    Then I will come in and ·thank [praise] the Lord.
20 This is the Lord’s gate;
    only ·those who are good [the righteous] may enter through it [15; 24:3–6].
21 Lord, I ·thank [praise] you for answering me.
    You have ·saved me [given me victory].

22 The stone that the builders rejected
    became the chief cornerstone [Luke 20:17; Acts 4:11; Eph. 2:20; 1 Pet. 2:7].
23 ·The Lord did this [L This is from the Lord],
    and it is wonderful ·to us [L in our eyes; Matt. 21:42; Mark 12:10–11].
24 This is the day that the Lord has made.
    Let us rejoice and be glad ·today [L in it]!

25 Please, Lord, ·save us [give us victory];
    please, Lord, give us ·success [prosperity].
26 ·God bless [Blessed be] the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
    We bless all of you from the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord [Mark 11:9; Luke 13:35; 19:38].
27 The Lord is God,
    and he has ·shown kindness to [illuminated; given light to] us.
·With branches in your hands, join the feast [L Bind the feast/procession with branches].
    Come to the ·corners [L horns; Ex. 27:2] of the altar.

28 You are my God, and I will ·thank [praise] you;
you are my God, and I will ·praise your greatness [L exalt you].

29 ·Thank [Praise] the Lord because he is good.
His ·love [loyalty] ·continues [endures] forever.

1 Peter 3:17-22

17 It is better to suffer for doing good than for doing ·wrong [evil] if that is ·what God wants [the will of God]. 18 Christ himself suffered for sins ·once [or once for all; C only his suffering has the power to redeem others]. ·He was not guilty, but he suffered for those who are guilty [L …the righteous for the unrighteous] to bring you to God. ·His body was killed [L He was put to death in the flesh/body], but he was made alive in the ·spirit [or Spirit; C at his resurrection in a glorified body]. 19 And in the ·spirit [or Spirit] he went and preached to the spirits in prison [C probably either fallen angels, imprisoned by God (see Gen. 6:1–4; 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6) or the spirits of the people who rejected Noah’s preaching; see v. 20] 20 who refused to obey God long ago in the time of Noah [Gen. 6:1—8:22], when ·God was waiting patiently [L the patience of God waited] while Noah was building the ·boat [ark]. [In this ark; L In it] Only a few people—eight in all—were saved ·by [or through] water. 21 And that water ·is like [anticipates; foreshadows; symbolizes; prefigures] baptism that now saves you—not the ·washing [removal] of dirt from the body, but the ·promise [pledge; appeal; or response] made to God from a ·good [clear] conscience. And this is ·because Jesus Christ was raised from the dead [or through the resurrection of Jesus Christ]. 22 Now Jesus has gone into heaven and is at God’s right side [C the place of honor] ·ruling over angels, authorities, and powers [L with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him].
