The World Should Praise the Lord

148 Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the ·skies [heavens].
    Praise him ·high above the earth [in the heights].
Praise him, all you ·angels [messengers].
    Praise him, all ·you armies of heaven [his hosts; C the angelic army].
Praise him, sun and moon.
    Praise him, all you ·shining stars [L stars of light].
Praise him, ·highest heavens [L heaven of heavens]
    and you waters above the ·sky [heavens].
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
    because ·they were created by his command [L he commands and they were created; Gen. 1].
He ·put them in place [L made them stand] forever and ever;
    he made a ·law [statute; requirement; ordinance] that will never ·change [pass].

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you large sea ·animals [monsters; C like Leviathan; 74:12–17; 104:26; Gen. 1:21; Job 3:8; 41; Is. 27:1] and all the ·oceans [deeps],
·lightning [L fire] and hail, snow and ·mist [cloud; or smoke],
    and stormy winds that ·obey him [L do his word],
mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle,
    crawling animals and birds,
11 kings of the earth and all ·nations [peoples],
    princes and all ·rulers [judges] of the earth,
12 young men and women,
    old people and ·children [youth].

13 Praise the name of the Lord,
    because ·he [L his name] alone is ·great [exalted].
    ·He is more wonderful than [L His splendor is over] heaven and earth.
14 God has ·given his people a king [exalted/raised a horn over his people; C an animal’s horn symbolizes power].
    He should be praised by all ·who belong to him [his saints/loyal ones];
he should be praised by the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel], the people ·closest to his heart [L nearest to him].

Praise the Lord!

Praise the God of Israel

149 Praise the Lord!

Sing a new song [C celebrating victory; 33:3; 40:3; 96:1; 98:1; 144:9; Is. 42:10; Rev. 5:9; 14:3] to the Lord;
sing his praise in the ·meeting [assembly; congregation] of his ·people [saints; loyal ones].

Let the Israelites ·be happy [rejoice] because of God, [L in] their Maker.
    Let the ·people of Jerusalem [L sons of Zion; C location of the Temple] rejoice ·because [L in] of their King.
They should praise him with dancing.
    They should ·sing praises [make a psalm] to him with tambourines and harps.
The Lord is pleased with his people;
    he ·saves [L endows with salvation/victory] the ·humble [needy].
Let ·those who worship him [the saints/loyal ones] rejoice in his glory [C God’s manifest presence].
    Let them sing for joy even in bed!

Let them ·shout his praise [L exalt God with their throats]
    with their two-edged swords in their hands.
They will ·punish [execute vengeance against] the nations
    and ·defeat [punish] the people.
They will put those kings in chains
    and ·those important men [honored men] in iron bands.
They will ·punish them as God has written [L accomplish a written judgment].
    God is honored by ·all who worship him [his saints/loyal ones].

Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord with Music

150 Praise the Lord!

Praise God in his ·Temple [L holy place; or holiness];
    praise him in his ·mighty heaven [L strong firmament; Gen. 1:7].
Praise him for his strength;
    praise him for his [L abundant] greatness.
Praise him with trumpet blasts;
    praise him with harps and lyres.
Praise him with tambourines and dancing;
    praise him with stringed instruments and flutes.
Praise him with loud cymbals;
    praise him with crashing cymbals.
Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord!

Psalm 114-115

God Brought Israel from Egypt

114 When ·the Israelites [Israel] went out of Egypt,
    the ·people [L house] of Jacob left ·that foreign country [L a people of incomprehensible language].
Then Judah became God’s holy place [Ex. 19:6];
    Israel became ·the land he ruled [his dominion].

The Sea [C Red (or Reed) Sea; Ex. 14–15] looked and ·ran away [fled];
    the Jordan River turned back [Josh. 3].
The mountains ·danced [skipped] like ·sheep [rams]
    and the hills like little lambs.
Sea, why did you ·run away [flee]?
    Jordan, why did you turn back?
Mountains, why did you ·dance [skip] like ·sheep [rams]?
    Hills, why did you ·dance [skip] like little lambs?

Earth, ·shake with fear [writhe; tremble] before the Lord,
    before the God of Jacob.
He turned a rock into a pool of water,
    a hard ·rock [flint] into a spring of water [Ex. 17:1–7; Num. 20:1–13].

The One True God

115 ·It does not belong [L Not to us, not] to us, Lord.
    The glory belongs to ·you [L your name]
because of your ·love [loyalty] and ·loyalty [faithfulness].

Why do the nations ask,
    “Where is their God?”
Our God is in heaven.
    He does what he pleases.
Their idols are made of silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but they cannot speak.
    They have eyes, but they cannot see.
They have ears, but they cannot hear.
    They have noses, but they cannot smell.
They have hands, but they cannot feel.
    They have feet, but they cannot walk.
    No sounds come from their throats.
People who make ·idols [L them] ·will be [or are] like them,
    and so will those who ·trust [have confidence in] them [135:15–18; Is. 44:9–20; 46:6–7; Jer. 10:1–9; Hab. 2:18–19].

·Family of [L O] Israel, ·trust [have confidence in] the Lord;
    he is your helper and your ·protection [L shield].
10 ·Family [L House] of Aaron [C the priests], ·trust [have confidence in] the Lord;
    he is your helper and your ·protection [L shield].
11 You who ·respect [fear] the Lord [Prov. 1:7] should ·trust [have confidence in] him;
    he is your helper and your ·protection [L shield].

12 The Lord remembers us and will bless us.
    He will bless the ·family [L house] of Israel;
    he will bless the ·family [L house] of Aaron [C the priests].
13 The Lord will bless those who ·respect [fear] him [Prov. 1:7],
    from the ·smallest [or least] to the greatest.

14 May the Lord ·give you success [make you increase],
    and may he give you and your children ·success [increase].
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth [Gen. 1].

16 Heaven belongs to the Lord,
    but he gave the earth to people.
17 Dead people do not praise the Lord;
    those ·in the grave are silent [L who go down in silence].
18 But we will praise the Lord
    now and forever.

Praise the Lord!

1 Kings 8:22-40

Solomon’s Prayer

22 Then Solomon stood ·facing [before] the Lord’s altar, and all the ·Israelites [L congregation/community/assembly of Israel] were standing behind him. He spread out his hands toward the sky 23 and said:

Lord, God of Israel, there is no god like you in heaven above or on earth below. You keep your ·agreement [treaty; covenant] ·of love [and steadfast love/lovingkindness] with your servants who ·truly follow you [L walk before you with all their heart]. 24 You have kept the ·promise [covenant; solemn pact] you made to your servant David, my father. You spoke it with your own mouth and ·finished [fulfilled] it with your hands today. 25 Now Lord, God of Israel, keep the promise you made to your servant David, my father. You said, ‘If your sons are careful to ·obey [L walk before] me as you have ·obeyed me [L walked], ·there will always be someone from your family [L you will never lack a man] ·ruling [to sit on the throne of] Israel [2 Sam. 7:16].’ 26 Now, God of Israel, ·please continue to keep that promise [confirm the word] you made to your servant David, my father.

27 “But, God, ·can [will] you really ·live [dwell] here on the earth? [L Look; T Behold] ·The sky [Even heaven] and the highest ·place in heaven [heavens] cannot contain you. Surely this ·house [Temple] which I have built cannot contain you. 28 But please ·listen to [regard] my prayer and my ·request [plea; supplication], because I am your servant. Lord my God, hear this prayer your servant prays to you today. 29 Night and day please watch over this ·Temple [L house] where you have said, ‘·I will be worshiped [L My name will be] there.’ Hear the prayer I pray facing this ·Temple [L house]. 30 Hear my ·prayers [pleas; supplications] and the prayers of your people Israel when we pray ·facing [toward] this place. Hear from your home in heaven, and when you hear, forgive us.

31 “If someone ·wrongs another person [sins against a neighbor], he will be brought to the altar in this ·Temple [L house]. If he swears an oath that he is not guilty, 32 then hear in heaven. ·Judge the case [Act and judge between your servants], ·punish [condemn] the guilty ·as they deserve [L by bringing his conduct on his own head], but ·declare that the innocent person is not guilty [acquit/vindicate the righteous/innocent in accordance with their righteousness/innocence].

33 “When your people, the Israelites, sin against you, their enemies will defeat them. But if they ·come back [turn] to you and ·praise you [L confess your name] and pray and ·plead [make supplication] to you in this ·Temple [L house], 34 then hear them in heaven. Forgive the ·sins [or sin] of your people Israel, and bring them back to the land you gave to their ancestors.

35 “When they sin against you, ·you will stop the rain from falling on their land [L the heavens will be shut and there will be no rain]. Then they will pray, facing this place and ·praising you [L confess your name]; they will stop sinning when you ·make them suffer [afflict them]. 36 ·When this happens [Then], please hear their prayer in heaven, and forgive the ·sins [or sin] of your servants, ·the Israelites [L your people Israel]. Teach them ·to do what is right [L the good way they should walk]. Then please send rain to this land you have given ·particularly to them [L your people for an inheritence].

37 “·At times the land will become so dry that no food will grow [If there is a famine in the land], or ·a great sickness will spread among the people [pestilence]. ·Sometimes all the crops will be destroyed by […or blight or mildew or] locusts or grasshoppers. ·Your people will be attacked in […or the people are besieged in the land of] their cities by their enemy or ·will become sick [struck by plague or sickness…]. 38 When any of these things happen, ·the people will become truly sorry [L each will know the affliction of his own heart]. ·If your people spread their hands in prayer [L …and spread his hands] toward this ·Temple [L house], 39 then hear their prayers from your ·home [dwelling place] in heaven. Forgive and ·treat [L act and give to] each person ·as he should be treated [L according to his ways/conduct] because you know what is in a person’s heart. Only you know what is in everyone’s heart. 40 Then your people will ·respect [fear] you ·as long as [L all the days] they live in this land you gave to our ancestors.

1 Timothy 4:7-16

But ·do not follow [reject] ·foolish stories that disagree with God’s truth [T godless myths and old wives tales], but train yourself ·to serve God [for godliness/piety]. [L For] ·Training your body [Physical exercise] helps you in ·some [or small] ways, but ·serving God [godliness] helps you in every way ·by bringing you blessings [L since it holds promise] in this life and in the future life, too. What I say is true [or This saying/word is trustworthy; 1:15; 3:1; 2 Tim. 2:11; Titus 3:8], and ·you should fully accept it [L worthy of full acceptance]. 10 This is why we work and struggle,[a] because we have put our hope in the living God who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach these things. 12 Do not let anyone ·treat you as if you are unimportant [despise/disregard/look down on you] because you are young. Instead, be an example to the believers with your words, your ·actions [conduct; behavior], your love, your ·faith [faithfulness], and your ·pure life [purity]. 13 Until I come, ·continue to read the Scriptures to the people [attend/devote yourself to the public reading (of Scripture)], ·strengthen [encourage; exhort] them, and teach them. 14 ·Use [L Do not neglect] the ·gift from the Spirit [spiritual gift; L gift] ·you have [that is in you], which was given to you through prophecy when the group of elders laid their hands on you [C a way of dedicating someone to Christian service; 1:18; 5:22]. 15 ·Continue [Take care; Be diligent] to do those things; give your life to doing them so your progress may be seen by everyone. 16 Be ·careful [conscientious] ·in your life [L about yourself] and in your teaching. If you ·continue to live and teach rightly [L persevere in these things], you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.

John 8:47-59

47 The person who belongs to God ·accepts what God says [L hears/obeys the words of God]. But you don’t ·accept what God says [hear; obey], because you don’t belong to God.”

Jesus Is Greater than Abraham

48 ·They [The Jewish leaders; L The Jews] answered, “We say you are a Samaritan [C a people disliked by the Jews; 4:4, 9] and ·have a demon in you [are demon-possessed]. Are we not right?”

49 Jesus answered, “I ·have no demon in me [am not demon-possessed]. I give honor to my Father, but you dishonor me. 50 I am not trying to get ·honor [glory] for myself. There is One who wants this ·honor [glory] for me, and he is the judge. 51 ·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], whoever ·obeys my teaching will never die [L keeps my word will never see death].”

52 [L Therefore] ·They [The Jewish leaders; L The Jews] said to Jesus, “Now we know that you ·have a demon in you [are demon-possessed]! Even Abraham and the prophets died. But you say, ‘Whoever ·obeys my teaching will never die [L keeps my word will never taste death].’ 53 Do you think you are greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died, too. ·Who do you think you are [or Who are you claiming/pretending to be]?”

54 Jesus answered, “If I give ·honor [glory] to myself, that ·honor [glory] is worth nothing. The One who gives me ·honor [glory] is my Father, and you say he is your God. 55 You don’t really know him, but I know him. If I said I did not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I ·obey what he says [L keep his word]. 56 Your father Abraham ·was very happy [rejoiced] that he would see my day [C the day of the Messiah’s arrival]. He saw that day and was glad.”

57 [L Therefore] ·They [The Jewish leaders; L The Jews] said to him, “You have never seen Abraham! You are not even fifty years old [C Abraham had been dead for almost 2,000 years].”

58 Jesus answered, “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], before Abraham was even born, ·I am!” [C A claim to deity; see comments at 8:24; 10:28.] 59 When Jesus said this, the people picked up stones to throw at him [C believing he had committed blasphemy worthy of death]. But Jesus hid himself, and then he left the Temple.
