98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my foes,

99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
    because I ponder your testimonies.
100 I have more understanding than my elders,
    because I keep your precepts.(A)
101 I keep my steps from every evil path,
    that I may observe your word.
102 From your judgments I do not turn,
    for you have instructed me.
103 How sweet to my tongue is your promise,
    sweeter than honey to my mouth!(B)
104 Through your precepts I gain understanding;
    therefore I hate all false ways.

105 Your word is a lamp for my feet,

106 I make a solemn vow
    to observe your righteous judgments.
107 I am very much afflicted, Lord;
    give me life in accord with your word.

    but I do not forget your law.

Psalm 81[a]

An Admonition to Fidelity

For the leader; “upon the gittith.”[b] Of Asaph.

I

Sing joyfully to God our strength;(A)
    raise loud shouts to the God of Jacob!
Take up a melody, sound the timbrel,
    the pleasant lyre with a harp.
[c]Blow the shofar at the new moon,
    at the full moon, on our solemn feast.(B)
For this is a law for Israel,
    an edict of the God of Jacob,(C)
He made it a decree for Joseph
    when he came out of the land of Egypt.

[d]I heard a tongue I did not know:
    “I removed his shoulder from the burden;[e]
    his hands moved away from the basket.(D)
In distress you called and I rescued you;
    I answered you in secret with thunder;
At the waters of Meribah[f] I tested you:(E) ‘Listen, my people, I will testify against you

    If only you will listen to me, Israel!(F)
10 There shall be no foreign god among you;[g](G)
    you shall not bow down to an alien god.
11 ‘I am the Lord your God,
    who brought you up from the land of Egypt.
    Open wide your mouth that I may fill it.’
12 But my people did not listen to my words;
    Israel would not submit to me.
13 So I thrust them away to the hardness of their heart;
    ‘Let them walk in their own machinations.’(H)
14 O that my people would listen to me,
    that Israel would walk in my ways,(I)
15 In a moment I would humble their foes,
    and turn back my hand against their oppressors.(J)
16 Those who hate the Lord will try flattering him,
    but their fate is fixed forever.
17 But Israel I will feed with the finest wheat,
    I will satisfy them with honey from the rock.”(K)

Psalm 82[h]

The Downfall of Unjust Gods

A psalm of Asaph.

I

God takes a stand in the divine council,
    gives judgment in the midst of the gods.(L)
“How long will you judge unjustly
    and favor the cause of the wicked?(M)

“Defend the lowly and fatherless;
    render justice to the afflicted and needy.
Rescue the lowly and poor;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”(N)

[i]The gods neither know nor understand,
    wandering about in darkness,
    and all the world’s foundations shake.
I declare: “Gods though you be,[j](O)
    offspring of the Most High all of you,
Yet like any mortal you shall die;
    like any prince you shall fall.”
Arise, O God, judge the earth,[k]
    for yours are all the nations.

Numbers 11:24-35

The Spirit on the Elders. 24 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. Gathering seventy elders of the people, he had them stand around the tent. 25 The Lord then came down in the cloud and spoke to him. Taking some of the spirit that was on Moses, he bestowed it on the seventy elders; and as the spirit came to rest on them, they prophesied[a] but did not continue.

26 Now two men, one named Eldad and the other Medad, had remained in the camp, yet the spirit came to rest on them also. They too had been on the list, but had not gone out to the tent; and so they prophesied in the camp. 27 So, when a young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp,” 28 Joshua, son of Nun, who from his youth had been Moses’ aide, said, “My lord, Moses, stop them.” 29 But Moses answered him, “Are you jealous for my sake? If only all the people of the Lord were prophets! If only the Lord would bestow his spirit on them!” 30 Then Moses retired to the camp, along with the elders of Israel.

The Quail. 31 There arose a wind(A) from the Lord that drove in quail from the sea and left them all around the camp site, to a distance of a day’s journey and at a depth of two cubits upon the ground.[b] 32 (B)So all that day, all night, and all the next day the people set about to gather in the quail. Even the one who got the least gathered ten homers[c] of them. Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth, before it could be chewed, the Lord’s wrath flared up against the people, and the Lord struck them with a very great plague. 34 So that place was named Kibroth-hattaavah,[d] because it was there that the greedy people were buried.

35 From Kibroth-hattaavah the people set out for Hazeroth, where they stayed.

Romans 1:28-2:11

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is improper. 29 (A)They are filled with every form of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, rivalry, treachery, and spite. They are gossips 30 and scandalmongers and they hate God. They are insolent, haughty, boastful, ingenious in their wickedness, and rebellious toward their parents. 31 They are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know the just decree of God that all who practice such things deserve death, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.(B)

Chapter 2

God’s Just Judgment. [a]Therefore, you are without excuse,(C) every one of you who passes judgment.[b] For by the standard by which you judge another you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the very same things. We know that the judgment of God on those who do such things is true. Do you suppose, then, you who judge those who engage in such things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God?(D) Or do you hold his priceless kindness, forbearance, and patience in low esteem, unaware that the kindness of God would lead you to repentance?(E) By your stubbornness and impenitent heart,(F) you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God, (G)who will repay everyone according to his works:[c] eternal life to those who seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works, but wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey wickedness.(H) Yes, affliction and distress will come upon every human being who does evil, Jew first and then Greek. 10 (I)But there will be glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good, Jew first and then Greek. 11 [d](J)There is no partiality with God.

Judgment by the Interior Law.[e]

Matthew 18:1-9

Chapter 18[a]

The Greatest in the Kingdom. (A)At that time the disciples[b] approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child over, placed it in their midst, (B)and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children,[c] you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. (C)Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. [d]And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.

Temptations to Sin. (D)“Whoever causes one of these little ones[e] who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. [f]Woe to the world because of things that cause sin! Such things must come, but woe to the one through whom they come! (E)If your hand or foot causes you to sin,[g] cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into fiery Gehenna.
