Book of Common Prayer
Prayer of an Afflicted Man for Mercy on Himself and on Zion.
A Prayer of the Afflicted when he is faint and [a]pours out his complaint before the Lord.
102 (A)Hear my prayer, O Lord!
And let my cry for help (B)come to You.
2 (C)Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my distress;
(D)Incline Your ear to me;
In the day when I call (E)answer me quickly.
3 For my days (F)have been [b]consumed in smoke,
And my (G)bones have been scorched like a hearth.
4 My heart (H)has been smitten like [c]grass and has (I)withered away,
Indeed, I (J)forget to eat my bread.
5 Because of the [d]loudness of my groaning
My (K)bones [e]cling to my flesh.
6 I [f]resemble a (L)pelican of the wilderness;
I have become like an owl of the waste places.
7 I (M)lie awake,
I have become like a lonely bird on a housetop.
8 My enemies (N)have reproached me all day long;
Those who [g](O)deride me [h]have used my name as a (P)curse.
9 For I have eaten ashes like bread
And (Q)mingled my drink with weeping
10 (R)Because of Your indignation and Your wrath,
For You have (S)lifted me up and cast me away.
11 My days are like a [i](T)lengthened shadow,
And [j]I (U)wither away like [k]grass.
12 But You, O Lord, [l](V)abide forever,
And Your [m](W)name to all generations.
13 You will (X)arise and have (Y)compassion on Zion;
For (Z)it is time to be gracious to her,
For the (AA)appointed time has come.
14 Surely Your servants [n]find pleasure in her stones
And feel pity for her dust.
15 [o]So the [p](AB)nations will fear the name of the Lord
And (AC)all the kings of the earth Your glory.
16 For the Lord has (AD)built up Zion;
He has (AE)appeared in His glory.
17 He has (AF)regarded the prayer of the [q]destitute
And has not despised their prayer.
18 [r]This will be (AG)written for the (AH)generation to come,
[s]That (AI)a people yet to be created [t]may praise [u]the Lord.
19 For He (AJ)looked down from His holy height;
(AK)From heaven the Lord gazed [v]upon the earth,
20 To hear the (AL)groaning of the prisoner,
To (AM)set free [w]those who were doomed to death,
21 That men may (AN)tell of the name of the Lord in Zion
And His praise in Jerusalem,
22 When (AO)the peoples are gathered together,
And the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.
23 He has weakened my strength in the way;
He has (AP)shortened my days.
24 I say, “O my God, (AQ)do not take me away in the [x]midst of my days,
Your (AR)years are throughout all generations.
25 “Of old You (AS)founded the earth,
And the (AT)heavens are the work of Your hands.
26 “[y]Even they will (AU)perish, but You endure;
And all of them will wear out like a garment;
Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed.
27 “But You are [z](AV)the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.
28 “The (AW)children of Your servants will continue,
And their [aa](AX)descendants will be established before You.”
Prayer for Help in Trouble.
[a]Maskil of David, when he was [b]in the cave. A Prayer.
142 I (A)cry aloud with my voice to the Lord;
I (B)make supplication with my voice to the Lord.
2 I (C)pour out my complaint before Him;
I declare my (D)trouble before Him.
3 When (E)my spirit [c]was overwhelmed within me,
You knew my path.
In the way where I walk
They have (F)hidden a trap for me.
4 Look to the right and see;
For there is (G)no one who regards me;
[d]There is no (H)escape for me;
(I)No one cares for my soul.
5 I cried out to You, O Lord;
I said, “You are (J)my refuge,
My (K)portion in the (L)land of the living.
6 “(M)Give heed to my cry,
For I am (N)brought very low;
Deliver me from my persecutors,
For they are too (O)strong for me.
7 “(P)Bring my soul out of prison,
So that I may give thanks to Your name;
The righteous will surround me,
For You will (Q)deal bountifully with me.”
Prayer for Deliverance and Guidance.
A Psalm of David.
143 Hear my prayer, O Lord,
(R)Give ear to my supplications!
Answer me in Your (S)faithfulness, in Your (T)righteousness!
2 And (U)do not enter into judgment with Your servant,
For in Your sight (V)no man living is righteous.
3 For the enemy has persecuted my soul;
He has crushed my life (W)to the ground;
He (X)has made me dwell in dark places, like those who have long been dead.
4 Therefore (Y)my spirit [e]is overwhelmed within me;
My heart is [f](Z)appalled within me.
5 I (AA)remember the days of old;
I (AB)meditate on all Your doings;
I (AC)muse on the work of Your hands.
6 I (AD)stretch out my hands to You;
My (AE)soul longs for You, as a [g]parched land. [h]Selah.
7 (AF)Answer me quickly, O Lord, my (AG)spirit fails;
(AH)Do not hide Your face from me,
Or I will become like (AI)those who go down to the pit.
8 Let me hear Your (AJ)lovingkindness (AK)in the morning;
For I trust (AL)in You;
Teach me the (AM)way in which I should walk;
For to You I (AN)lift up my soul.
9 (AO)Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies;
[i]I take refuge in You.
10 (AP)Teach me to do Your will,
For You are my God;
Let (AQ)Your good Spirit (AR)lead me on level [j]ground.
11 (AS)For the sake of Your name, O Lord, (AT)revive me.
(AU)In Your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.
12 And in Your lovingkindness, [k](AV)cut off my enemies
And (AW)destroy all those who afflict my soul,
For (AX)I am Your servant.
10 The elders of the daughter of Zion
(A)Sit on the ground, they (B)are silent.
They have thrown (C)dust on their heads;
They have girded themselves with (D)sackcloth.
The (E)virgins of Jerusalem
Have bowed their heads to the ground.
11 My (F)eyes fail because of tears,
My [a](G)spirit is greatly troubled;
My [b](H)heart is poured out on the earth
(I)Because of the [c]destruction of the daughter of my people,
When (J)little ones and infants faint
In the streets of the city.
12 They say to their mothers,
“(K)Where is grain and wine?”
As they faint like a wounded man
In the streets of the city,
As their (L)life is poured out
On their mothers’ bosom.
13 How shall I admonish you?
To what (M)shall I compare you,
O daughter of Jerusalem?
To what shall I liken you as I comfort you,
O (N)virgin daughter of Zion?
For your [d]ruin is as vast as the sea;
Who can (O)heal you?
14 Your (P)prophets have seen for you
False and foolish visions;
And they have not (Q)exposed your iniquity
So as to restore you from captivity,
But they have (R)seen for you false and misleading [e]oracles.
15 All who pass along the way
(S)Clap their hands in derision at you;
They (T)hiss and shake their heads
At the daughter of Jerusalem,
“Is this the city of which they said,
‘(U)The perfection of beauty,
(V)A joy to all the earth’?”
16 All (W)your enemies
Have opened their mouths wide against you;
They hiss and (X)gnash their teeth.
They say, “We have (Y)swallowed her up!
Surely this is the (Z)day for which we waited;
We have reached it, we have seen it.”
17 The Lord has (AA)done what He purposed;
He has accomplished His word
Which He commanded from days of old.
He has thrown down (AB)without sparing,
And He has caused the enemy to (AC)rejoice over you;
He has (AD)exalted the [f]might of your adversaries.
18 Their (AE)heart cried out to the Lord,
“O (AF)wall of the daughter of Zion,
Let your (AG)tears run down like a river day and night;
Give yourself no relief,
Let [g]your eyes have no rest.
14 Therefore, my (A)beloved, flee from (B)idolatry. 15 I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say. 16 Is not the (C)cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the [a](D)bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Since there is one [b]bread, we (E)who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one [c]bread.
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be (A)guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a man must (B)examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number [a](C)sleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are (D)disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with (E)the world.
The Last Passover
12 (A)On the first day of (B)Unleavened Bread, when [a]the Passover lamb was being (C)sacrificed, His disciples *said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 13 And He *sent two of His disciples and *said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him; 14 and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My (D)guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there.” 16 The disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
17 (E)When it was evening He *came with the twelve. 18 As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will [b]betray Me—[c]one who is eating with Me.” 19 They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20 And He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, [d]one who dips with Me in the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man [e]by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good [f]for that man if he had not been born.”
The Lord’s Supper
22 (F)While they were eating, He took some bread, and [g]after a (G)blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My (H)blood of the (I)covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
