Psalm 97

The Lord’s Power and Dominion.

97 (A)The Lord [a]reigns, let the (B)earth rejoice;
Let the many [b](C)islands be glad.
(D)Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;
(E)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
(F)Fire goes before Him
And (G)burns up His adversaries round about.
His (H)lightnings lit up the world;
The earth saw and (I)trembled.
The mountains (J)melted like wax at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the (K)Lord of the whole earth.
The (L)heavens declare His righteousness,
And (M)all the peoples have seen His glory.

Let all those be ashamed who serve (N)graven images,
Who boast themselves of (O)idols;
[c](P)Worship Him, all you [d]gods.
Zion [e]heard this and (Q)was glad,
And the daughters of Judah have rejoiced
Because of Your judgments, O Lord.
For You are the Lord (R)Most High over all the earth;
You are exalted far (S)above all [f]gods.

10 (T)Hate evil, you who love the Lord,
Who (U)preserves the souls of His godly ones;
He (V)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 (W)Light is sown like seed for the righteous
And (X)gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Be (Y)glad in the Lord, you righteous ones,
And (Z)give thanks [g]to His holy name.

Psalm 99-100

Praise to the Lord for His Fidelity to Israel.

99 (A)The Lord reigns, let the peoples tremble;
He [a](B)is enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake!
The Lord [b]is (C)great in Zion,
And He is (D)exalted above all the peoples.
Let them praise Your (E)great and awesome name;
(F)Holy is [c]He.
The [d]strength of the King (G)loves [e]justice;
You have established [f](H)equity;
You have (I)executed [g]justice and righteousness in Jacob.
[h](J)Exalt the Lord our God
And (K)worship at His footstool;
(L)Holy is He.

(M)Moses and Aaron were among His (N)priests,
And (O)Samuel was among those who (P)called on His name;
They (Q)called upon the Lord and He answered them.
He (R)spoke to them in the pillar of cloud;
They (S)kept His testimonies
And the statute that He gave them.
O Lord our God, You (T)answered them;
You were a (U)forgiving God to them,
And yet an (V)avenger of their evil deeds.
Exalt the Lord our God
And worship at His holy hill,
For holy is the Lord our God.

All Men Exhorted to Praise God.

A Psalm for [i]Thanksgiving.

100 (W)Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.
(X)Serve the Lord with gladness;
(Y)Come before Him with joyful singing.
Know that (Z)the Lord [j]Himself is God;
It is He who has (AA)made us, and [k]not we ourselves;
We are (AB)His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter His gates (AC)with [l]thanksgiving
And His courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him, (AD)bless His name.
For (AE)the Lord is good;
(AF)His lovingkindness is everlasting
And His (AG)faithfulness to all generations.

Psalm 94-95

The Lord Implored to Avenge His People.

94 O Lord, God of [a](A)vengeance,
God of [b]vengeance, [c](B)shine forth!
(C)Rise up, O (D)Judge of the earth,
Render recompense (E)to the proud.
How long shall the wicked, O Lord,
How long shall the (F)wicked exult?
They pour forth words, they (G)speak arrogantly;
All who do wickedness (H)vaunt themselves.
They (I)crush Your people, O Lord,
And (J)afflict Your heritage.
They (K)slay the widow and the [d]stranger
And murder the orphans.
(L)They have said, “[e]The Lord does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob pay heed.”

Pay heed, you (M)senseless among the people;
And when will you understand, (N)stupid ones?
He who (O)planted the ear, [f]does He not hear?
He who formed the eye, [g]does He not see?
10 He who [h](P)chastens the nations, will He not rebuke,
Even He who (Q)teaches man knowledge?
11 The Lord (R)knows the thoughts of man,
[i]That they are a mere breath.

12 Blessed is the man whom (S)You chasten, O [j]Lord,
And (T)whom You teach out of Your law;
13 That You may grant him (U)relief from the (V)days of adversity,
Until (W)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For (X)the Lord will not abandon His people,
Nor will He (Y)forsake His inheritance.
15 For [k](Z)judgment [l]will again be righteous,
And all the upright in heart [m]will follow it.
16 Who will (AA)stand up for me against evildoers?
Who will take his stand for me (AB)against those who do wickedness?

17 If (AC)the Lord had not been my help,
My soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.
18 If I should say, “(AD)My foot has slipped,”
Your lovingkindness, O Lord, will hold me up.
19 When my anxious thoughts [n]multiply within me,
Your (AE)consolations delight my soul.
20 Can a [o](AF)throne of destruction be allied with You,
One (AG)which devises [p]mischief by decree?
21 They (AH)band themselves together against the [q]life of the righteous
And (AI)condemn [r]the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord has been my (AJ)stronghold,
And my God the (AK)rock of my refuge.
23 He has (AL)brought back their wickedness upon them
And will [s](AM)destroy them in their evil;
The Lord our God will [t]destroy them.

Praise to the Lord, and Warning against Unbelief.

95 O come, let us (AN)sing for joy to the Lord,
Let us shout joyfully to (AO)the rock of our salvation.
Let us (AP)come before His presence (AQ)with [u]thanksgiving,
Let us shout joyfully to Him (AR)with [v]psalms.
For the Lord is a (AS)great God
And a great King (AT)above all gods,
In whose hand are the (AU)depths of the earth,
The peaks of the mountains are His also.
[w]The sea is His, for it was He (AV)who made it,
And His hands formed the dry land.

Come, let us (AW)worship and bow down,
Let us (AX)kneel before the Lord our (AY)Maker.
For He is our God,
And (AZ)we are the people of His [x](BA)pasture and the sheep of His hand.
(BB)Today, [y]if you would hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts, as at [z](BC)Meribah,
As in the day of [aa](BD)Massah in the wilderness,
“When your fathers (BE)tested Me,
They tried Me, though they had seen My work.
10 “For (BF)forty years I loathed that generation,
And said they are a people who err in their heart,
And they do not know My ways.
11 “Therefore I (BG)swore in My anger,
Truly they shall not enter into My (BH)rest.”

Genesis 49:29-50:14

29 Then he charged them and said to them, “I am about to be (A)gathered to my people; (B)bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in (C)the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the (D)cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field from Ephron the Hittite for a [a]burial site. 31 There they buried (E)Abraham and his wife (F)Sarah, there they buried (G)Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and there I buried Leah— 32 the field and the cave that is in it, purchased from the sons of Heth.” 33 When Jacob finished charging his sons, he drew his feet into the bed and (H)breathed his last, and was (I)gathered to his people.

The Death of Israel

50 Then Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him. Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians (J)embalmed Israel. Now forty days were [b]required for [c]it, for [d]such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians (K)wept for him seventy days.

When the days of [e]mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak [f]to Pharaoh, saying, (L)My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die; in my grave (M)which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’” Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company. 10 When they came to the [g]threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they (N)lamented there with a very great and [h]sorrowful lamentation; and he [i]observed seven days mourning for his father. 11 Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at [j]the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a [k]grievous [l]mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore it was named [m]Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

Burial at Machpelah

12 Thus his sons did for him as he had charged them; 13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in (O)the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field for a [n]burial site from Ephron the Hittite. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.

1 Corinthians 11:17-34

17 But in giving this instruction, (A)I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. 18 For, in the first place, when you come together [a]as a church, I hear that [b](B)divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. 19 For there (C)must also be factions among you, (D)so that those who are approved may become [c]evident among you. 20 Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper, 21 for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and (E)another is drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the (F)church of God and (G)shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall (H)I praise you? In this I will not praise you.

The Lord’s Supper

23 For (I)I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that (J)the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took (K)the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the (L)new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death (M)until He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be (N)guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a man must (O)examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number [d](P)sleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are (Q)disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with (R)the world.

33 So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is (S)hungry, let him eat (T)at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will (U)arrange (V)when I come.

Mark 8:1-10

Four Thousand Fed

In those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, (A)Jesus called His disciples and *said to them, (B)I feel compassion for the [a]people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance.” And His disciples answered Him, “Where will anyone be able to find enough [b]bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?” And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” And He *directed the [c]people to [d]sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to [e]serve to them, and they served them to the [f]people. They also had a few small fish; and (C)after He had blessed them, He ordered these to be [g]served as well. And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large (D)baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces. About four thousand were there; and He sent them away. 10 And immediately He entered the boat with His disciples and came to the district of (E)Dalmanutha.
