Protection of the Oppressed

Awaiting Redemption
A song of ascents.
1 Out of the depths I call to you, Lord!(O)
2 Lord, listen to my voice;
let your ears be attentive
to my cry for help.(P)
3 Lord, if you kept an account of iniquities,
Lord, who could stand?(Q)
4 But with you there is forgiveness,
so that you may be revered.(R)
8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh tells you, ‘Perform a miracle,’ tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh. It will become a serpent.’”(A) 10 So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord had commanded. Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent. 11 But then Pharaoh called the wise men and sorcerers—the magicians(B) of Egypt, and they also did the same thing by their occult practices.(C) 12 Each one threw down his staff, and it became a serpent. But Aaron’s staff swallowed their staffs. 13 However, Pharaoh’s heart was hard,(D) and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had said.
The First Plague: Water Turned to Blood
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is hard: He refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning. When you see him walking out to the water, stand ready to meet him by the bank of the Nile. Take in your hand the staff that turned into a snake.(E) 16 Tell him: The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to tell you: Let my people go, so that they may worship[a] me in the wilderness. But so far you have not listened. 17 This is what the Lord says: Here is how you will know that I am the Lord. Watch. I am about to strike the water in the Nile with the staff in my hand, and it will turn to blood. 18 The fish in the Nile will die, the river will stink, and the Egyptians will be unable to drink water from it.”
19 So the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron: Take your staff and stretch out your hand(F) over the waters of Egypt—over their rivers, canals, ponds, and all their water reservoirs—and they will become blood. There will be blood throughout the land of Egypt, even in wooden and stone containers.”
20 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded; in the sight of Pharaoh and his officials, he raised the staff and struck the water in the Nile, and all the water in the Nile was turned to blood.(G) 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad the Egyptians could not drink water from it. There was blood throughout the land of Egypt.
22 But the magicians of Egypt did the same thing by their occult practices. So Pharaoh’s heart was hard, and he would not listen to them, as the Lord had said. 23 Pharaoh turned around, went into his palace, and didn’t take even this to heart. 24 All the Egyptians dug around the Nile for water to drink because they could not drink the water from the river.
A Ministry of Life or Death
14 But thanks be to God,(A) who always leads us in Christ’s triumphal procession and through us spreads the aroma of the knowledge of him in every place.(B) 15 For to God we are the fragrance(C) of Christ among those who are being saved(D) and among those who are perishing.(E) 16 To some we are an aroma of death(F) leading to death, but to others, an aroma of life(G) leading to life. Who is adequate for these things? 17 For we do not market the word of God(H) for profit like so many.[a] On the contrary, we speak with sincerity in Christ, as from God and before God.
Living Letters
3 Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, like some, letters of recommendation to you or from you? 2 You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.(I) 3 You show that you are Christ’s letter,(J) delivered[b] by us, not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God(K)—not on tablets of stone(L) but on tablets of human hearts.[c](M)
Paul’s Competence
4 Such is the confidence we have through Christ before God. 5 It is not that we are competent in[d] ourselves to claim anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God.(N) 6 He has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant,(O) not of the letter,(P) but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
The Question of Divorce
10 He(A) set out from there and went to the region of Judea(B) and across the Jordan.(C) Then crowds converged on him again, and as was his custom he taught(D) them again.
2 Some Pharisees(E) came to test(F) him, asking, “Is it lawful(G) for a man to divorce(H) his wife?” (I)
3 He replied to them, “What did Moses(J) command you?”
4 They said, “Moses permitted us to write divorce papers(K) and send her away.”(L)
5 But Jesus told them, “He wrote this command for you because of the hardness of your hearts. (M) 6 But from the beginning(N) of creation(O) God[a] made them male and female.[b](P) 7 For this reason a man will leave (Q) his father and mother [c] 8 and the two will become one flesh.[d](R) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”(S)
10 When they were in the house again, the disciples questioned him about this matter. 11 He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife(T) and marries(U) another commits adultery(V) against her. 12 Also, if she divorces her husband(W) and marries another, she commits adultery.”
Blessing the Children
13 People(X) were bringing little children(Y) to him in order that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked(Z) them. 14 When Jesus saw it, he was indignant(AA) and said to them, “Let the little children come to me.(AB) Don’t stop(AC) them, because the kingdom of God(AD) belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you,(AE) whoever does not receive[e](AF) the kingdom of God like a little child(AG) will never enter it.” 16 After taking them in his arms, he laid his hands on(AH) them and blessed(AI) them.
