Psalm 120

A Cry for Truth and Peace

A song of ascents.

In my distress I called to the Lord,
and he answered me.(A)
Lord, rescue me from lying lips
and a deceitful tongue.”(B)

What will he give you,
and what will he do to you,
you deceitful tongue?(C)
A warrior’s sharp arrows
with burning charcoal![a](D)

What misery that I have stayed in Meshech,[b](E)
that I have lived among the tents of Kedar![c](F)
I have dwelt too long
with those who hate peace.(G)
I am for peace; but when I speak,
they are for war.(H)

Psalm 121

The Lord Our Protector

A song of ascents.

I lift my eyes toward the mountains.
Where will my help come from?(I)
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.(J)

He will not allow your foot to slip;
your Protector will not slumber.(K)
Indeed, the Protector of Israel
does not slumber or sleep.(L)

The Lord protects you;
the Lord is a shelter right by your side.[d](M)
The sun will not strike you by day
or the moon by night.(N)

The Lord will protect you from all harm;
he will protect your life.(O)
The Lord will protect your coming and going
both now and forever.(P)

Psalm 122

A Prayer for Jerusalem

A song of ascents. Of David.

I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let’s go to the house of the Lord.”(Q)
Our feet were standing
within your gates, Jerusalem(R)

Jerusalem, built as a city should be,
solidly united,(S)
where the tribes, the Lord’s tribes, go up
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.(T)
(This is an ordinance for Israel.(U))
There, thrones for judgment are placed,
thrones of the house of David.(V)

Pray for the well-being[e] of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure;(W)
may there be peace within your walls,
security within your fortresses.”(X)
Because of my brothers and friends,
I will say, “May peace be in you.”[f](Y)
Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will pursue your prosperity.(Z)

Psalm 123

Looking for God’s Favor

A song of ascents.

I lift my eyes to you,
the one enthroned in heaven.(AA)
Like a servant’s eyes on his master’s hand,
like a servant girl’s eyes on her mistress’s hand,
so our eyes are on the Lord our God
until he shows us favor.(AB)

Show us favor, Lord, show us favor,
for we’ve had more than enough contempt.(AC)
We’ve had more than enough
scorn from the arrogant
and contempt from the proud.(AD)

Psalm 124

The Lord Is on Our Side

A song of ascents. Of David.

If the Lord had not been on our side—
let Israel say—
if the Lord had not been on our side(AE)
when people attacked us,(AF)
then they would have swallowed us alive
in their burning anger against us.(AG)
Then the water would have engulfed us;
the torrent would have swept over us;
the raging water would have swept over us.(AH)

Blessed be the Lord,
who has not let us be ripped apart by their teeth.(AI)
We have escaped like a bird from the hunter’s net;
the net is torn, and we have escaped.(AJ)
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.(AK)

Psalm 125

Israel’s Stability

A song of ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion.
It cannot be shaken; it remains forever.(AL)
The mountains surround Jerusalem
and the Lord surrounds his people,
both now and forever.(AM)

The scepter of the wicked will not remain
over the land allotted to the righteous,
so that the righteous will not apply their hands to injustice.(AN)
Do what is good, Lord, to the good,
to those whose hearts are upright.(AO)
But as for those who turn aside to crooked ways,
the Lord will banish them with the evildoers.(AP)
Peace be with Israel.(AQ)

Psalm 126

Zion’s Restoration

A song of ascents.

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,[g]
we were like those who dream.(AR)
Our mouths were filled with laughter then,(AS)
and our tongues with shouts of joy.(AT)
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”(AU)
The Lord had done great things for us;
we were joyful.(AV)

Restore our fortunes,[h] Lord,
like watercourses in the Negev.(AW)
Those who sow in tears
will reap with shouts of joy.(AX)
Though one goes along weeping,
carrying the bag of seed,
he will surely come back with shouts of joy,
carrying his sheaves.(AY)

Psalm 127

The Blessing of the Lord

A song of ascents. Of Solomon.

Unless the Lord builds a house,
its builders labor over it in vain;(AZ)
unless the Lord watches over a city,
the watchman stays alert in vain.(BA)
In vain you get up early and stay up late,
working hard to have enough food—
yes, he gives sleep to the one he loves.[i](BB)

Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord,
offspring, a reward.(BC)
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the sons born in one’s youth.(BD)
Happy is the man who has filled his quiver with them.(BE)
They will never be put to shame
when they speak with their enemies at the city gate.(BF)

Exodus 5:1-6

Moses Confronts Pharaoh

Later, Moses and Aaron went in and said to Pharaoh, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival for me in the wilderness.”(A)

But Pharaoh responded, “Who is the Lord that I should obey him by letting Israel go?(B) I don’t know[a] the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go.”(C)

They answered, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go on a three-day trip into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God, or else he may strike us with plague or sword.”

The king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why are you causing the people to neglect their work? Get to your labor!” Pharaoh also said, “Look, the people of the land are so numerous, and you would stop them from their labor.”(D)

Further Oppression of Israel

That day Pharaoh commanded the overseers(E) of the people as well as their foremen, “Don’t continue to supply the people with straw for making bricks, as before. They must go and gather straw for themselves. But require the same quota of bricks from them as they were making before; do not reduce it. For they are slackers—that is why they are crying out,(F) ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ Impose heavier work on the men. Then they will be occupied with it and not pay attention to deceptive words.”

10 So the overseers and foremen of the people went out and said to them, “This is what Pharaoh says:(G) ‘I am not giving you straw. 11 Go get straw yourselves wherever you can find it, but there will be no reduction at all in your workload.’” 12 So the people scattered throughout the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw. 13 The overseers insisted, “Finish your assigned work each day, just as you did when straw was provided.” 14 Then the Israelite foremen, whom Pharaoh’s slave drivers had set over the people, were beaten(H) and asked, “Why haven’t you finished making your prescribed number of bricks yesterday or today, as you did before?”

15 So the Israelite foremen went in and cried for help to Pharaoh: “Why are you treating your servants this way? 16 No straw has been given to your servants, yet they say to us, ‘Make bricks!’ Look, your servants are being beaten, but it is your own people who are at fault.”

17 But he said, “You are slackers. Slackers! That is why you are saying, ‘Let us go sacrifice to the Lord.’ 18 Now get to work. No straw will be given to you, but you must produce the same quantity of bricks.”

19 The Israelite foremen saw that they were in trouble when they were told, “You cannot reduce your daily quota of bricks.” 20 When they left Pharaoh, they confronted Moses and Aaron, who stood waiting to meet them.

21 “May the Lord take note of you and judge,” they said to them, “because you have made us reek to Pharaoh and his officials—putting a sword in their hand to kill us!” (I)

22 So Moses went back to the Lord and asked, “Lord, why have you caused trouble for this people? And why did you ever send me?(J) 23 Ever since I went in to Pharaoh to speak in your name he has caused trouble for this people, and you haven’t rescued your people at all.”

But the Lord replied to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: because of a strong hand he will let them go, and because of a strong hand he will drive them from his land.”(K)

1 Corinthians 14:20-33

20 Brothers and sisters, don’t be childish in your thinking, but be infants in regard to evil and adult in your thinking.(A) 21 It is written in the law,

I will speak to this people
by people of other tongues
and by the lips of foreigners,
and even then, they will not listen to me,[a](B)

says the Lord. 22 Speaking in tongues, then, is intended as a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church assembles together and all are speaking in tongues and people who are outsiders or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all are prophesying and some unbeliever or outsider comes in, he is convicted by all and is called to account by all. 25 The secrets of his heart will be revealed, and as a result he will fall facedown and worship God, proclaiming, “God is really among you.”(C)

Order in Church Meetings

26 What then, brothers and sisters? Whenever you come together, each one[b] has a hymn, a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation.(D) Everything is to be done for building up. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, there are to be only two, or at the most three, each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, that person is to keep silent in the church and speak to himself and God. 29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should evaluate.(E) 30 But if something has been revealed to another person sitting there, the first prophet should be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that everyone may learn and everyone may be encouraged.(F) 32 And the prophets’ spirits are subject to the prophets, 33 since God is not a God of disorder but of peace.

As in all the churches of the saints,(G)

1 Corinthians 14:39-40

39 So then, my brothers and sisters, be eager(A) to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything is to be done decently(B) and in order.

Mark 9:42-50

Warnings from Jesus

42 “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to fall away(A) —it would be better for him if a heavy millstone(B) were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

43 “And if your hand causes you to fall away, cut it off.(C) It is better for you to enter life maimed(D) than to have two hands and go to hell, the unquenchable fire.[a](E) 45 And if your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame(F) than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.[b] 47 And if your eye causes you to fall away, gouge it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God(G) with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown(H) into hell,(I) 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.[c] 49 For everyone will be salted with fire.[d][e](J) 50 Salt is good, but if the salt should lose its flavor, how can you season it?(K) Have salt(L) among yourselves, and be at peace(M) with one another.”
