Genesis 44:1-17

Joseph’s Final Test

44 Joseph commanded his steward, “Fill the men’s bags with as much food as they can carry, and put each one’s silver at the top of his bag.(A) Put my cup, the silver one, at the top of the youngest one’s bag, along with the silver for his grain.” So he did as Joseph told him.

At morning light, the men were sent off with their donkeys. They had not gone very far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, “Get up. Pursue the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good? Isn’t this the cup that my master drinks from and uses for divination?(B) What you have done is wrong!’”

When he overtook them, he said these words to them. They said to him, “Why does my lord say these things? Your servants could not possibly do such a thing. We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found at the top of our bags. How could we steal silver or gold from your master’s house? If it is found with one of us, your servants, he must die, and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.”(C)

10 The steward replied, “What you have said is right, but only the one who is found to have it will be my slave, and the rest of you will be blameless.”

11 So each one quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12 The steward searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. 13 Then they tore their clothes,(D) and each one loaded his donkey and returned to the city.

14 When Judah and his brothers reached Joseph’s house, he was still there. They fell to the ground before him.(E) 15 “What have you done?” Joseph said to them. “Didn’t you know that a man like me could uncover the truth by divination?”

16 “What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “How can we plead? How can we justify ourselves? God has exposed your servants’ iniquity. We are now my lord’s slaves—both we and the one in whose possession the cup was found.”

17 Then Joseph said, “I swear that I will not do this. The man in whose possession the cup was found will be my slave. The rest of you can go in peace to your father.”

Romans 8:1-10

The Life-Giving Spirit

Therefore, there is now no condemnation(A) for those in(B) Christ Jesus,[a](C) because the law[b] of the Spirit of life(D) in Christ Jesus has set you[c] free from the law[d] of sin and death.(E) For what the law could not do(F) since it was weakened by the flesh,(G) God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh(H) as a sin offering,[e](I) in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled(J) in us who do not walk according to the flesh(K) but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on the things of the flesh,(L) but those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit. Now the mindset of the flesh(M) is death,(N) but the mindset of the Spirit is life and peace. The mindset of the flesh is hostile(O) to God because it does not submit to God’s law. Indeed, it is unable to do so. Those who are in the flesh(P) cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.(Q) If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,(R) he does not belong to him. 10 Now if Christ is in you,(S) the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit[f] gives life[g] because of righteousness.

John 5:25-29

25 “Truly I tell you, an hour is coming, and is now here,(A) when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.(B) 26 For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he has granted to the Son(C) to have life in himself. 27 And he has granted him the right to pass judgment,(D) because he is the Son of Man.(E) 28 Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of condemnation.
