Psalm 83

God Implored to Confound His Enemies.

A Song, a Psalm of Asaph.

83 O God, (A)do not remain quiet;
(B)Do not be silent and, O God, do not be still.
For behold, Your enemies (C)make an uproar,
And (D)those who hate You have [a](E)exalted themselves.
They (F)make shrewd plans against Your people,
And [b]conspire together against (G)Your [c]treasured ones.
They have said, “Come, and (H)let us wipe them out [d]as a nation,
That the (I)name of Israel be remembered no more.”
For they have [e](J)conspired together with one mind;
Against You they make a covenant:
The tents of (K)Edom and the (L)Ishmaelites,
(M)Moab and the (N)Hagrites;
(O)Gebal and (P)Ammon and (Q)Amalek,
(R)Philistia with the inhabitants of (S)Tyre;
(T)Assyria also has joined with them;
They have become [f]a help to the (U)children of Lot. [g]Selah.

Deal with them (V)as with Midian,
As (W)with Sisera and Jabin at the torrent of Kishon,
10 Who were destroyed at En-dor,
Who (X)became as dung for the ground.
11 Make their nobles like (Y)Oreb and Zeeb
And all their princes like (Z)Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 Who said, “(AA)Let us possess for ourselves
The (AB)pastures of God.”

13 O my God, make them like the [h](AC)whirling dust,
Like (AD)chaff before the wind.
14 Like (AE)fire that burns the forest
And like a flame that (AF)sets the mountains on fire,
15 So pursue them (AG)with Your tempest
And terrify them with Your storm.
16 (AH)Fill their faces with dishonor,
That they may seek Your name, O Lord.
17 Let them be (AI)ashamed and dismayed forever,
And let them be humiliated and perish,
18 That they may (AJ)know that (AK)You alone, whose name is the Lord,
Are the (AL)Most High over all the earth.

Psalm 42-43

BOOK 2

Thirsting for God in Trouble and Exile.

For the choir director. A [a]Maskil of the sons of Korah.

42 As the deer [b]pants for the water brooks,
So my soul [c](A)pants for You, O God.
My soul (B)thirsts for God, for the (C)living God;
When shall I come and [d](D)appear before God?
My (E)tears have been my food day and night,
While they (F)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
These things I remember and I (G)pour out my soul within me.
For I (H)used to go along with the throng and [e]lead them in procession to the house of God,
With the voice of (I)joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.

(J)Why are you [f](K)in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become (L)disturbed within me?
[g](M)Hope in God, for I shall [h]again praise [i]Him
For the [j](N)help of His presence.
O my God, my soul is [k]in despair within me;
Therefore I (O)remember You from (P)the land of the Jordan
And the [l]peaks of (Q)Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;
All Your (R)breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.
The Lord will (S)command His lovingkindness in the daytime;
And His song will be with me (T)in the night,
A prayer to (U)the God of my life.

I will say to God (V)my rock, “Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go (W)mourning [m]because of the (X)oppression of the enemy?”
10 As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries revile me,
While they (Y)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
11 (Z)Why are you [n]in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?
[o]Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
The [p]help of my countenance and my God.

Prayer for Deliverance.

43 (AA)Vindicate me, O God, and (AB)plead my case against an ungodly nation;
[q]O deliver me from (AC)the deceitful and unjust man!
For You are the (AD)God of my strength; why have You (AE)rejected me?
Why do I go (AF)mourning [r]because of the oppression of the enemy?

O send out Your (AG)light and Your truth, let them lead me;
Let them bring me to Your (AH)holy hill
And to Your (AI)dwelling places.
Then I will go to (AJ)the altar of God,
To God [s]my exceeding (AK)joy;
And upon the (AL)lyre I shall praise You, O God, my God.

(AM)Why are you [t]in despair, O my soul?
And why are you disturbed within me?
[u]Hope in God, for I shall [v]again praise Him,
The [w]help of my countenance and my God.

Psalm 85-86

Prayer for God’s Mercy upon the Nation.

For the choir director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

85 O Lord, You showed (A)favor to Your land;
You [a](B)restored the captivity of Jacob.
You (C)forgave the iniquity of Your people;
You (D)covered all their sin. [b]Selah.
You (E)withdrew all Your fury;
You (F)turned away from Your burning anger.

(G)Restore us, O God of our salvation,
And (H)cause Your indignation toward us to cease.
Will (I)You be angry with us forever?
Will You prolong Your anger to [c]all generations?
Will You not Yourself [d](J)revive us again,
That Your people may (K)rejoice in You?
Show us Your lovingkindness, O Lord,
And (L)grant us Your salvation.

[e]I will hear what God the Lord will say;
For He will (M)speak peace to His people, [f]to His godly ones;
But let them not (N)turn back to [g]folly.
Surely (O)His salvation is near to those who [h]fear Him,
That (P)glory may dwell in our land.
10 (Q)Lovingkindness and [i]truth have met together;
(R)Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 [j]Truth (S)springs from the earth,
And righteousness looks down from heaven.
12 Indeed, (T)the Lord will give what is good,
And our (U)land will yield its produce.
13 (V)Righteousness will go before Him
And will make His footsteps into a way.

A Psalm of Supplication and Trust.

A Prayer of David.

86 (W)Incline Your ear, O Lord, and answer me;
For I am (X)afflicted and needy.
(Y)Preserve my [k]soul, for I am a (Z)godly man;
O You my God, save Your servant who (AA)trusts in You.
Be (AB)gracious to me, O Lord,
For (AC)to You I cry all day long.
Make glad the soul of Your servant,
For to You, O Lord, (AD)I lift up my soul.
For You, Lord, are (AE)good, and (AF)ready to forgive,
And (AG)abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You.
(AH)Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
And give heed to the voice of my supplications!
In (AI)the day of my trouble I shall call upon You,
For (AJ)You will answer me.
There is (AK)no one like You among the gods, O Lord,
Nor are there any works (AL)like Yours.
(AM)All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord,
And they shall glorify Your name.
10 For You are (AN)great and (AO)do [l]wondrous deeds;
You alone (AP)are God.

11 (AQ)Teach me Your way, O Lord;
I will walk in Your truth;
(AR)Unite my heart to fear Your name.
12 I will (AS)give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart,
And will glorify Your name forever.
13 For Your lovingkindness toward me is great,
And You have (AT)delivered my soul from the [m]depths of [n]Sheol.

14 O God, arrogant men have (AU)risen up against me,
And [o]a band of violent men have sought my [p]life,
And they have not set You before them.
15 But You, O Lord, are a God (AV)merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and [q]truth.
16 (AW)Turn to me, and be gracious to me;
Oh (AX)grant Your strength to Your servant,
And save the (AY)son of Your handmaid.
17 (AZ)Show me a sign for good,
That those who hate me may (BA)see it and be ashamed,
Because You, O Lord, (BB)have helped me and comforted me.

Jeremiah 10:11-24

11 [a]Thus you shall say to them, “The (A)gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will (B)perish from the earth and from under the [b]heavens.”

12 It is (C)He who made the earth by His power,
Who (D)established the world by His wisdom;
And by His understanding He has (E)stretched out the heavens.
13 When He utters His (F)voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
And He causes the (G)clouds to ascend from the end of the earth;
He makes lightning for the rain,
And brings out the (H)wind from His storehouses.
14 Every man is (I)stupid, devoid of knowledge;
Every goldsmith is put to shame by his [c]idols;
For his molten images are deceitful,
And there is no breath in them.
15 They are (J)worthless, a work of mockery;
In the (K)time of their punishment they will perish.
16 The (L)portion of Jacob is not like these;
For the [d](M)Maker of all is He,
And (N)Israel is the tribe of His inheritance;
The (O)Lord of hosts is His name.

17 (P)Pick up your bundle from the ground,
You who dwell under siege!

18 For thus says the Lord,

“Behold, I am (Q)slinging out the inhabitants of the land
At this time,
And will cause them distress,
That they may [e]be found.”

19 (R)Woe is me, because of my [f]injury!
My (S)wound is incurable.
But I said, “Truly this is a sickness,
And I (T)must bear it.”
20 My (U)tent is destroyed,
And all my ropes are broken;
My (V)sons have gone from me and are no more.
There is (W)no one to stretch out my tent again
Or to set up my curtains.
21 For the shepherds have become stupid
And (X)have not sought the Lord;
Therefore they have not prospered,
And (Y)all their flock is scattered.
22 The sound of a (Z)report! Behold, it comes—
A great commotion (AA)out of the land of the north—
To (AB)make the cities of Judah
A desolation, a haunt of jackals.

23 I know, O Lord, that (AC)a man’s way is not in himself,
(AD)Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.
24 (AE)Correct me, O Lord, but with justice;
Not with Your anger, or You will [g]bring me to nothing.

Romans 5:12-21

12 Therefore, just as through (A)one man sin entered into the world, and (B)death through sin, and (C)so death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 for [a]until the Law sin was in the world, but (D)sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned (E)in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a [b](F)type of Him who was to come.

15 But [c]the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of (G)the one (H)the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by (I)the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. 16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand (J)the judgment arose from one transgression [d]resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions [e]resulting in justification. 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned (K)through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will (L)reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

18 So then as through (M)one transgression [f]there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one (N)act of righteousness [g]there resulted (O)justification of life to all men. 19 For as through the one man’s disobedience (P)the many (Q)were made sinners, even so through (R)the obedience of the One (S)the many will be made righteous. 20 [h](T)The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, (U)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as (V)sin reigned in death, even so (W)grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 8:21-32

21 Then He said again to them, “I go away, and (A)you will seek Me, and (B)will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So (C)the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, (D)Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, (E)You are from below, I am from above; (F)you are of this world, (G)I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you (H)will die in your sins; for unless you believe that [a](I)I am He, (J)you will die in your sins.” 25 So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, [b]What have I been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but (K)He who sent Me is true; and (L)the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you (M)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that [c](N)I am He, and (O)I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; (P)He [d]has not left Me alone, for (Q)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He spoke these things, (R)many came to believe in Him.

The Truth Will Make You Free

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, (S)If you continue in My word, then you are truly (T)disciples of Mine; 32 and (U)you will know the truth, and (V)the truth will make you free.”
