Book of Common Prayer
6 When David by his sins had provoked God’s wrath, and now felt not only his hand against him, but also conceived the horrors of death everlasting, he desireth forgiveness. 6 Bewailing that if God took him away in his indignation, he should lack occasion to praise him as he was wont to do while he was among men. 9 Then suddenly feeling God’s mercy, he sharply rebuketh his enemies which rejoiced in his affliction.
To him that excelleth on Neginoth, upon the eight tune. A Psalm of David.
1 O Lord, (A)[a]rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chastise me in thy wrath.
2 Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am weak: O Lord heal me, for my [b]bones are vexed.
3 [c]My soul is also sore troubled: but Lord, how long wilt thou delay?
4 Return, O Lord: deliver my soul: save me for thy mercy’s sake.
5 For in [d]death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall praise thee?
6 I fainted in my mourning: I cause my bed every night to swim, and water my couch with my tears.
7 [e]Mine eye is dimmed for despite, and sunk in because of all mine enemies.
8 [f]Away from me all ye workers of iniquity: for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping.
9 The Lord hath heard my petition: the Lord will receive my prayer.
10 All mine enemies shall be confounded and sore vexed: they shall be turned back, and put to shame [g]suddenly.
12 1 The Prophet lamenting the miserable estate of the people, and the decay of all good order, desireth God speedily to send succor to his children. 7 Then comforting himself, and others with the assurance of God’s help, he commendeth the constant verity that God observeth in keeping his promises.
To him that excelleth upon the eight tune. A Psalm of David.
1 Help Lord, for there is not [a]a godly man left: for the faithful are failed from among the children of men.
2 They speak deceitfully every one with his neighbor, [b]flattering with their lips, and speak with a double heart.
3 The Lord cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:
4 Which have said, [c]With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own; who is Lord over us?
5 [d]Now for the oppression of the needy, and for the sighs of the poor, I will up, saith the Lord, and will [e]set at liberty him, whom the wicked hath [snared].
6 The words of the Lord are pure words, as the silver, tried in a furnace of earth, fined sevenfold.
7 Thou wilt keep [f]them, O Lord; thou wilt preserve him from this generation forever.
8 The wicked walk on every side; when they are exalted, [g]it is a shame for the sons of men.
94 1 He prayeth unto God against the violence and arrogance of tyrants, 10 warning them of God’s judgments. 12 Then doth he comfort the afflicted by the good issue of their afflictions, as he felt in himself, and did set in others, and by the ruin of the wicked, 23 whom the Lord will destroy.
1 O Lord God [a]the avenger, O God the avenger, show thyself [b]clearly.
2 Exalt thyself, O Judge of the world, and render a reward to the proud.
3 Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked [c]triumph?
4 They prate and speak fiercely: all the workers of iniquity vaunt themselves.
5 They [d]smite down thy people, O Lord, and trouble thine heritage.
6 They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
7 [e]Yet they say, The Lord shall not see: neither will the God of Jacob regard it.
8 Understand, ye unwise among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?
9 He that [f]planted the ear, shall he not hear? or he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
10 Or he that chastiseth the [g]nations, shall he not correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall he not know?
11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.
12 Blessed is the man whom thou [h]chastisest, O Lord, and teachest him in thy Law,
13 That thou mayest give him rest from the days of evil, while the pit is dug for the wicked.
14 Surely the Lord will not fail his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.
15 For [i]judgment shall return to justice, and all the upright in heart shall follow after it.
16 Who will rise up with me against the wicked? or who will take my part against the workers of iniquity?
17 If the Lord had not [j]helped me, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.
18 When I said, [k]My foot slideth, thy mercy, O Lord, stayed me.
19 In the multitude of my [l]thoughts in mine heart, thy comforts have rejoiced my soul.
20 Hath the throne of iniquity [m]fellowship with thee, which forgeth wrong for a Law?
21 They gather them together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.
22 But the Lord is my refuge, and my God is the rock of mine hope.
23 And he will recompense them their wickedness, and [n]destroy them in their own malice, yea, the Lord our God shall destroy them.
17 Zion stretcheth out her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the Lord hath appointed the enemies of Jacob round about him: Jerusalem is [a]as a menstruous woman in the midst of them.
18 The Lord is righteous: for I have rebelled against his [b]commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.
19 I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my Priests and mine Elders perished in the city, while they [c]sought their meat to refresh their souls.
20 Behold, O Lord, how I am troubled: my bowels swell: mine heart is turned within me, for I am full of heaviness: the sword spoileth abroad, as death doeth at home.
21 They have heard that I mourn, but there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble, and are glad, that thou hast done it: thou wilt bring the day, that thou hast pronounced, and they shall be like unto me.
22 [d]Let all their wickedness come before thee: [e]do unto them, as thou hast done unto me, for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and mine heart is heavy.
8 [a]For brethren, we would not have you ignorant of our affliction, which came unto us in Asia, how we were pressed out of measure passing strength, so that we altogether [b]doubted even of life.
9 Yea, we received the sentence of death in [c]ourselves, because we should not rest in ourselves, but in God, which raised the dead.
10 Who delivered us from so [d]great a death, and doth deliver us: in whom we trust, that yet hereafter he will deliver us.
11 (A)[e]So that ye labor together in prayer for us, [f]that for the gift bestowed upon us for many, thanks may be given by many persons for us.
12 [g]For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly [h]pureness, and not in fleshly wisdom, but by the [i]grace of God we have had our conversation in the world, and most of all to youwards.
13 For we write [j]none other things unto you, than that ye read or else that ye acknowledge, and I trust ye shall acknowledge unto the [k]end.
14 Even as ye have acknowledged us partly, that we are your [l]rejoicing, even as ye are ours, in the [m]day of our Lord Jesus.
15 And in this confidence was I minded first to come unto you, that ye might have had a [n]double grace,
16 And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia, unto you, and to be led forth toward Judea of you.
17 [o]When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or mind I those things which I mind, according to the [p]flesh, that with me should be, [q]Yea, yea, and Nay, nay?
18 [r]Yea, God is [s]faithful, that our word toward you, was not Yea, and Nay?
19 [t]For the Son of God Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, that is, by me, and Silvanus, and Timothy, [u]was not Yea, and Nay: but in [v]him it was Yea.
20 [w]For all the promises of God in him are Yea, and are in [x]him Amen, unto the glory of God through [y]us.
21 [z]And it is God which established us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us.
22 Who hath also sealed us, and hath given the [aa]earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
27 ¶ (A)[a]Then they came again to Jerusalem: and as he walked in the Temple, there came to him the high Priests, and the Scribes, and the Elders,
28 And said unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority, that thou shouldest do these things?
29 Then Jesus answered, and said unto them, I will also ask you a certain thing, and answer ye me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
31 And they thought with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven, he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?
32 [b]But if we say, Of men, we fear the people: for all men counted John that he was a Prophet indeed.
33 Then they answered, and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answered, and said unto them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
