Book of Common Prayer
Remember His Holy Name
97 (A)Yahweh [a]reigns, let the (B)earth rejoice;
Let the many (C)coastlands be glad.
2 (D)Clouds and thick darkness are all around Him;
(E)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
3 (F)Fire goes before Him
And (G)burns up His adversaries all around.
4 His (H)lightnings light up the world;
The earth sees and (I)trembles.
5 The mountains (J)melt like wax at the presence of Yahweh,
At the presence of the (K)Lord of all the earth.
6 The (L)heavens declare His righteousness,
And (M)all the peoples see His glory.
7 Let all those be ashamed who serve (N)graven images,
Who boast of (O)idols;
[b](P)Worship Him, all you [c]gods!
8 Zion [d]heard this and (Q)was glad,
And the daughters of Judah have rejoiced
Because of Your judgments, O Yahweh.
9 For You are Yahweh (R)Most High over all the earth;
You are exalted far (S)above all [e]gods.
10 (T)Hate evil, you who love Yahweh,
Who (U)keeps the souls of His holy ones;
He (V)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 (W)Light is sown for the righteous
And (X)gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Be (Y)glad in Yahweh, you righteous ones,
And (Z)give thanks for the remembrance of [f]His holy name.
Holy Is Yahweh Our God
99 (A)Yahweh reigns, let the peoples tremble;
He (B)sits enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth quake!
2 Yahweh is (C)great in Zion,
And He is (D)exalted above all the peoples.
3 Let them praise Your (E)great and awesome name;
(F)Holy is [a]He.
4 [b]The strength of the King (G)loves [c]justice;
You have established [d](H)equity;
You have (I)done [e]justice and righteousness in Jacob.
5 (J)Exalt Yahweh our God
And (K)worship at the footstool of His feet;
(L)Holy is He.
6 (M)Moses and Aaron were among His (N)priests,
And (O)Samuel was among those who (P)called on His name;
They (Q)would call upon Yahweh and He would answer them.
7 He (R)would speak to them in the pillar of cloud;
They (S)kept His testimonies
And the statute that He gave them.
8 O Yahweh our God, You (T)answered them;
You were a (U)forgiving God to them,
And yet an (V)avenger of their evil deeds.
9 Exalt Yahweh our God
And worship at His holy mountain,
For holy is Yahweh our God.
Serve Yahweh with Gladness
A Psalm of [f]Thanksgiving.
God of Vengeance, Shine Forth
94 O Yahweh, God of [a](A)vengeance,
God of [b]vengeance, [c](B)shine forth!
2 (C)Be lifted up, O (D)Judge of the earth,
Render recompense (E)to the proud.
3 How long shall the wicked, O Yahweh,
How long shall the (F)wicked exult?
4 They pour forth words, they (G)speak arrogantly;
All workers of iniquity (H)vaunt themselves.
5 They (I)crush Your people, O Yahweh,
And (J)afflict Your inheritance.
6 They (K)slay the widow and the sojourner
And murder the orphans.
7 (L)They have said, “Yah does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob discern.”
8 Discern, you (M)senseless among the people;
And when will you have insight, (N)you fools?
9 He who (O)planted the ear, [d]does He not hear?
He who formed the eye, [e]does He not see?
10 He who [f](P)disciplines the nations, will He not rebuke,
Even He who (Q)teaches man knowledge?
11 Yahweh (R)knows the thoughts of man,
[g]That they are vanity.
12 Blessed is the man whom (S)You discipline, O Yah,
And (T)whom You teach out of Your law;
13 That You may grant him (U)calm from the (V)days of calamity,
Until (W)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For (X)Yahweh will not abandon His people,
Nor will He (Y)forsake His inheritance.
15 For [h](Z)judgment will [i]again be righteous,
And all the upright in heart will [j]follow it.
16 Who will (AA)arise for me against evildoers?
Who will take his stand for me (AB)against workers of iniquity?
17 If (AC)Yahweh had not been my help,
My soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.
18 If I should say, “(AD)My foot has stumbled,”
Your lovingkindness, O Yahweh, will hold me up.
19 When my anxious thoughts [k]multiply within me,
Your (AE)consolations delight my soul.
20 Can a [l](AF)throne of destruction be allied with You,
One (AG)which forms [m]trouble by statute?
21 They (AH)band themselves together against the [n]life of the righteous
And (AI)condemn [o]the innocent to death.
22 But Yahweh has been my (AJ)stronghold,
And my God the (AK)rock of my refuge.
23 He has (AL)brought back their [p]iniquity upon them
And will [q](AM)destroy them in their evil;
Yahweh our God will [r]destroy them.
Let Us Kneel Before Yahweh Our Maker
95 Oh come, let us (AN)sing for joy to Yahweh,
Let us make a loud shout to (AO)the rock of our salvation.
2 Let us (AP)come before His presence (AQ)with [s]thanksgiving,
Let us make a loud shout to Him (AR)with songs of praise.
3 For Yahweh is a (AS)great God
And a great King (AT)above all gods,
4 In whose hand are the (AU)depths of the earth,
The peaks of the mountains are His also.
5 [t]The sea is His, for it was He (AV)who made it,
And His hands formed the dry land.
6 Come, let us (AW)worship and bow down,
Let us (AX)kneel before Yahweh our (AY)Maker.
7 For He is our God,
And (AZ)we are the people of His (BA)pasture and the sheep of His hand.
(BB)Today, [u]if you hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts, as at [v](BC)Meribah,
As in the day of [w](BD)Massah in the wilderness,
9 “When your fathers (BE)tried Me,
They tested Me, though they had seen My work.
10 For (BF)forty years I loathed that generation,
And said they are a people who wander in their heart,
And they do not know My ways.
11 Therefore I (BG)swore in My anger,
They shall never enter into My (BH)rest.”
Jacob Leaves While Laban Is Gone
31 Then [a]Jacob heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that belonged to our father, and from what belonged to our father he has made all this [b]wealth.” 2 And Jacob saw the face of Laban, and behold, it was not friendly toward him as formerly. 3 Then Yahweh said to Jacob, “(A)Return to the land of your fathers and to your kin, and (B)I will be with you.” 4 So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to his flock in the field, 5 and he said to them, “(C)I see your father’s face, that it is not friendly toward me as formerly, but (D)the God of my father has been with me. 6 (E)You also know that I have served your father with all my power. 7 Yet your father has (F)cheated me and (G)changed my wages ten times; however, (H)God did not allow him to harm me. 8 If (I)he spoke thus, ‘The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the flock bore speckled; and if he spoke thus, ‘The striped shall be your wages,’ then all the flock bore striped. 9 Thus God has (J)delivered your father’s livestock and given them to me. 10 Now it happened at the time when the flock were [c]mating that I lifted up my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the male goats which were [d]mating were striped, speckled, and mottled. 11 Then (K)the angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob,’ and I said, ‘Here I am.’ 12 He said, ‘Lift up now your eyes and see that all the male goats which are [e]mating are striped, speckled, and mottled; for (L)I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you. 13 I am (M)the God of Bethel, where you (N)anointed a pillar, where you made a vow to Me; now arise, [f]leave this land, and (O)return to the land of your kin.’” 14 Then Rachel and Leah said to him, “Do we still have any portion or inheritance in our father’s house? 15 Are we not counted by him as foreigners? For (P)he has sold us and has also [g]entirely consumed [h]our purchase price. 16 Surely all the riches which God has delivered over to us from our father belong to us and our children; now then, do whatever God has said to you.”
17 Then Jacob arose and put his children and his wives upon camels; 18 and he drove away all his livestock and all his possessions which he had accumulated, his acquired livestock which he had accumulated in Paddan-aram, in order (Q)to go to the land of Canaan to his father Isaac. 19 Now Laban had gone to shear his flock. Then Rachel stole the [i](R)household idols that were her father’s. 20 And Jacob [j]deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was fleeing. 21 So he fled with all that he had; and he arose and crossed the [k]River and set his face toward the hill country of (S)Gilead.
Laban Pursues Jacob
22 Then it was told to Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled; 23 so he took his [l]relatives with him and pursued him a distance of seven days’ journey, and he overtook him in the hill country of Gilead. 24 (T)And God came to Laban the Aramean in a (U)dream of the night and said to him, “[m](V)Beware lest you speak to Jacob either good or bad.”
Jesus Christ Our Advocate
2 (A)My little children, I am (B)writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, (C)we have an [a](D)Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and He Himself is (E)the [b]propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also (F)for those of the whole world.
3 (G)And by this we know that we have come to (H)know Him, if we (I)keep His commandments. 4 The one who says, “(J)I have come to (K)know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a (L)liar, and (M)the truth is not in him; 5 but whoever (N)keeps His word, truly in him the (O)love of God has been perfected. (P)By this we know that we are in Him: 6 the one who says he (Q)abides in Him (R)ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
7 (S)Beloved, I am (T)not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had (U)from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. 8 [c]On the other hand, I am writing (V)a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because (W)the darkness is passing away and (X)the true Light is already shining. 9 The one who says he is in the Light and yet (Y)hates his (Z)brother is in the darkness until now. 10 (AA)The one who loves his brother abides in the Light and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But the one who (AB)hates his brother is in the darkness and (AC)walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness (AD)blinded his eyes.
18 (A)Then, the Jews did not believe it of him that he was blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight, 19 and questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?” 20 So his parents answered and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they (B)were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews (C)had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him to be [a]Christ, (D)he was to be put out of the synagogue. 23 For this reason his parents said, “(E)He is of age; ask him.”
24 Therefore, a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, “(F)Give glory to God; we know that (G)this man is a sinner.” 25 He then answered, “Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 So they said to him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “(H)I told you already and you did not (I)listen. Why do you want to listen again? Do you want to become His disciples too?” 28 And they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but (J)we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, (K)we do not know where He is from.” 30 The man answered and said to them, “Well, here is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from, and He opened my eyes. 31 We know that (L)God does not listen to sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him. 32 [b]Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 (M)If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.” 34 They answered and said to him, “(N)You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?” So they (O)put him out.
Jesus Affirms His Deity
35 Jesus heard that they had (P)put him out, and after finding him, He said, “Do you believe in the (Q)Son of Man?” 36 He answered and said, “(R)Who is He, [c]Lord, that I may believe in Him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and (S)He is the one who is talking with you.” 38 And he said, “Lord, I believe.” And he (T)worshiped Him. 39 And Jesus said, “(U)For judgment I came into this world, so that (V)those who do not see may see, and that (W)those who see may become blind.” 40 Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, “(X)Are we blind too?” 41 Jesus said to them, “(Y)If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now that you say, ‘(Z)We see,’ your sin remains.
