⁸ For what is ^(A)the hope of the godless ^[a]when he is cut off,
When God requires ^(B)his ^[b]soul?
⁹ Will God ^(C)hear his cry
When ^(D)distress comes upon him?
¹⁰ Will he take ^(E)delight in the Almighty?
Will he call on God at all times?
¹¹ I will instruct you in the ^[c]power of God;
What is with the Almighty I will not conceal.
¹² Behold, all of you have seen it;
Why then do you speak with utter vanity?

¹³ “This is ^(F)the portion of a wicked man from God,
And the inheritance which the ^(G)ruthless receive from the Almighty.
¹⁴ Though his sons are many, ^[d]they are destined ^(H)for the sword;
And his ^(I)offspring will not be satisfied with bread.
¹⁵ His survivors will be buried because of the plague,
And ^[e]their ^(J)widows will not be able to weep.
¹⁶ Though he piles up silver like dust
And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay,
¹⁷ He may prepare it, ^(K)but the righteous will wear it,
And the innocent will divide the silver.
¹⁸ He has built his ^(L)house like the ^[f]moth,
Or as a hut which the watchman has made.
¹⁹ He lies down rich, but never ^[g]again;
He opens his eyes, and ^(M)it is no longer.
^20 (N)Terrors overtake him like many waters;
A tempest steals him away ^(O)in the night.
²¹ The east ^(P)wind carries him away, and he goes,
And it whirls him ^(Q)away from his place.
²² For it will hurl at him ^(R)without sparing;
He will surely try to ^(S)flee from its ^[h]power.
²³ Men will clap their hands at him
And will ^(T)hiss him from his place.

¹³ Surely ^(A)God will not listen to ^[a]an empty cry,
Nor will the Almighty perceive it.

¹⁸ If I ^[a](A)see wickedness in my heart,
The ^(B)Lord ^[b]will not ^[c]hear;

²⁹ Yahweh is ^(A)far from the wicked,
But He ^(B)hears the prayer of the righteous.

⁹ He who turns away his ear from listening to the law,
Even his ^(A)prayer is an abomination.

¹⁵ So when you ^(A)spread out your hands in prayer,
^(B)I will hide My eyes from you;
Indeed, even though you ^(C)multiply prayers,
I will not listen.
^(D)Your hands are full of blood.
