Book of Common Prayer
To the Overcomer upon Nehiloth, A Psalm of David.
1 ¶ Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my meditation.
2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God, for unto thee will I pray.
3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; early will I present myself unto thee and wait.
4 For thou art not a God that loves wickedness; neither shall one who is evil dwell with thee.
5 The foolish (those who are governed by carnal thoughts or desires) shall not stand in thy sight; thou dost hate all workers of iniquity.
6 Thou shalt destroy those that speak lies: the LORD will abominate the bloody and deceitful man.
7 ¶ But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear I will worship toward thy holy temple.
8 Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.
9 For there is no uprightness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.
10 Declare them guilty, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out for the multitude of their rebellions; for they have rebelled against thee.
11 And all those that put their trust in thee shall rejoice: they shall ever be in jubilee, for thou shalt cover them; and all that love thy name shall be joyful in thee.
12 For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.
To the Overcomer in Neginoth upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David.
1 ¶ O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
2 Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are troubled.
3 My soul is also greatly troubled; but thou, O LORD, how long?
4 Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake.
5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in Sheol who shall give thee thanks?
6 I am weary with my groaning; all the night I flood my bed; I water my couch with my tears.
7 Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxes old because of all mine enemies.
8 ¶ Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity, for the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping.
9 The LORD has heard my supplication; the LORD has received my prayer.
10 All my enemies shall be ashamed; they shall be sorely troubled: they shall turn back and be ashamed suddenly.
1 ¶ Why dost thou stand afar off, O LORD? Why dost thou hide thyself in times of trouble?
2 The wicked in his pride persecutes the poor; let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.
3 For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire and blesses the covetous, whom the LORD abhors.
4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, does not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.
5 His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight; as for all his enemies, he puffs at them.
6 He has said in his heart, I shall not be moved, for I shall never be in adversity.
7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.
8 He sits in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places he murders the innocent: his eyes are secretly set against the poor.
9 He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor: he catches the poor when he draws him into his net.
10 He crouches and hides himself, and many are those who fall under his power.
11 He has said in his heart, God has forgotten; he hides his face; he will never see it.
12 ¶ Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand; forget not the humble.
13 In what does the wicked irritate God? He has said in his heart, Thou wilt not require accountability.
14 Thou hast seen it, for thou dost behold mischief and spite to requite it with thy hand: the poor commits himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.
15 Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man; seek out his wickedness until thou find none.
16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the Gentiles are perished out of his land.
17 LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart; thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:
18 to judge the fatherless and the oppressed that the man of the earth may no longer oppress.
To the Overcomer, A Psalm of David.
1 ¶ I put my trust in the LORD: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?
2 For, behold, the wicked bend their bow; they make ready their arrow upon the string that they may secretly shoot at the upright in heart.
3 The foundations shall be destroyed. What has the righteous done?
4 ¶ The LORD is in the temple of his holiness, the LORD’s throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try the children of men.
5 The LORD tries the righteous, but the wicked and he that loves violence his soul hates.
6 Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, with winds of whirlwinds: this shall be the portion of their cup.
7 For the righteous LORD loves righteousness; his countenance beholds the upright.
15 Diligently guard, therefore, your souls, for ye saw no manner of likeness on the day that the LORD spoke unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire,
16 lest ye corrupt yourselves and make yourselves a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
17 the likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flies in the air,
18 the likeness of any animal that moves on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth,
19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the host of heaven, and should be driven to worship them and serve them because the LORD thy God has conceded them unto all the peoples under all the heavens.
20 But the LORD has taken you and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him the people of his inheritance, as ye are this day.
21 Furthermore, the LORD was angry with me for your sakes and swore that I should not go over Jordan and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the LORD thy God gives thee for an inheritance.
22 Therefore, I must die in this land and will not pass the Jordan, but ye shall pass and inherit that good land.
23 Keep yourselves, do not forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he established with you, and make yourselves a graven image or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God has forbidden thee.
24 For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
11 ¶ I wish ye could bear with me a little in my folly and indeed bear with me.
2 For I am jealous over you with the jealousy of God, for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to the Christ.
3 But I fear that as the serpent deceived Eve through his craftiness, so your senses should be corrupted in some way, and ye should fall from the simplicity that is in the Christ.
4 Therefore if anyone comes preaching another Jesus whom we have not preached or if ye receive another spirit from that which ye have received or another gospel from that which ye have accepted, ye bear well with it.
5 ¶ I reckon that I have not been inferior in any way to those grandiose apostles.
6 But though I am rude in speech, yet not in knowledge, but we have been thoroughly made manifest among you in all things.
7 Have I committed an offence in humbling myself that ye might be exalted because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely?
8 I deprived the other congregations, {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} taking wages of them, to do you service.
9 And when I was present with you and had need, I was not a burden to any of you, for that which was lacking to me was supplied by the brethren which came from Macedonia; and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself.
10 It is the truth of Christ in me that this glory shall not be sealed up unto me in the regions of Achaia.
11 Why? because I do not love you? God knows.
12 But what I do, I will continue to do that I may take away the occasion from those who desire it to be found like unto us in that in which they glory.
13 For these false apostles are deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.
14 And it is no marvel, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers transform themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works.
16 ¶ I say again, Let no one think me a fool if otherwise, receive me as a fool, that I may yet glory a little.
17 That which I speak, I speak it not according to the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of glory.
18 Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also.
19 For ye suffer fools gladly, seeing ye yourselves are wise.
20 For ye suffer it if anyone brings you into bondage, if anyone devours you, if anyone takes of you, if anyone exalts himself, if anyone smites you on the face.
21 I speak as concerning the reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit in that in which another is bold, (I speak foolishly), I am bold also.
16 ¶ Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance, for they disfigure their faces that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They already have their reward.
17 But thou, when thou dost fast, anoint thine head, and wash thy face
18 that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who sees in secret, shall reward thee openly.
19 ¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal;
20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt and where thieves do not break through nor steal;
21 for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 The lamp of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye is sincere, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye is evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If, therefore, the light that is in thee is darkness, how great is that darkness!
