  178. The Interpretation of the Dream

    “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.
  179. My people consult a wooden idol, and a diviner’s rod speaks to them. A spirit of prostitution leads them astray; they are unfaithful to their God.

  188. Then he called to me, “Look, those going toward the north country have given my Spirit rest in the land of the north.”
  189. They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the Lord Almighty was very angry.
  190. Jerusalem’s Enemies to Be Destroyed

    A prophecy: The word of the Lord concerning Israel. The Lord, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the human spirit within a person, declares:
  191. Mourning for the One They Pierced

    “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.
  192. “On that day, I will banish the names of the idols from the land, and they will be remembered no more,” declares the Lord Almighty. “I will remove both the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land.
  193. Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.
  194. Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

    This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.
  195. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
  196. “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
  197. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.
  198. Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness

    Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
  199. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  200. When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.
  201. Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

    Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.
  202. for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
  203. “Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
  204. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
  205. And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
  206. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
  207. “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.
  208. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
  209. He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,
  210. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
  211. And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
  212. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
  213. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
  214. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
  215. At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,
  216. Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

    They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
  217. Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out,
  218. The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
  219. The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.”
  220. Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things?
  221. Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”
  222. but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”
  223. He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”
  224. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
  225. For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
  226. He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
  227. Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.
  228. In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet.
  229. Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit

    When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.
  230. A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech.
  231. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”
  232. So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.
  233. When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
  234. The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.”
  235. David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
  236. Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
  237. Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
  238. for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.
  239. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
  240. The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
  241. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
  242. and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
  243. Zechariah’s Song

    His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
  244. And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.
  245. Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.
  246. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.
  247. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,
  248. John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
  249. and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
  250. Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness

    Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
  251. Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

    Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.
  252. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,
  253. Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

    Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people.
  254. In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,
  255. All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!”
  256. who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured,
  257. At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind.
  258. and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out;
  259. For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
  260. Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.
  261. A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him.
  262. Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father.
  263. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
  264. At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
  265. If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
  266. “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’
  267. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”
  268. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
  269. for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”
  270. and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.
  271. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
  272. Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
  273. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
  274. Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.
  275. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
  276. The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
  277. For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.
  278. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
  279. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
  280. The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.
  281. By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
  282. Spiritual Blindness

    Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
  283. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
  284. After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”
  285. Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

    “If you love me, keep my commands.
  286. the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
  287. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
  288. The Work of the Holy Spirit

    “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.
  289. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
  290. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
  291. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
  292. And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
  293. until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.
  294. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
  295. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
  296. and said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus.
  297. The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

    When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
  298. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
  299. “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
  300. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
  301. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
  302. Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
  303. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!
  304. You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: “‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
  305. After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
  306. Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?
  307. Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
  308. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.
  309. We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
  310. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them
  311. This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.
  312. But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.
  313. “You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!
  314. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
  315. While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
  316. For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.
  317. When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,
  318. because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
  319. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
  320. When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money
  321. and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
  322. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
  323. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.
  324. Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
  325. Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.
  326. While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you.
  327. how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
  328. While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
  329. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.
  330. “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”
  331. The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house.
  332. “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning.
  333. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
  334. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.
  335. One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)
  336. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
  337. On Cyprus

    The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.
  338. Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said,
  339. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
  340. God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.
  341. It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements:
  342. Paul’s Vision of the Man of Macedonia

    Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.
  343. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.
  344. Paul and Silas in Prison

    Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.
  345. She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.
  346. and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
  347. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
  348. so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.
  349. Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.”
  350. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?”
  351. Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
  352. “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there.
  353. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me.
  354. Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.
  355. We sought out the disciples there and stayed with them seven days. Through the Spirit they urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.
  356. Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”
  357. (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees believe all these things.)
  358. There was a great uproar, and some of the teachers of the law who were Pharisees stood up and argued vigorously. “We find nothing wrong with this man,” they said. “What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
  359. They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said through Isaiah the prophet:
  360. and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
  361. God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you
  362. I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong—
  363. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.
  364. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
  365. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
  366. We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.
  367. Life Through the Spirit

    Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,
  368. because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
  369. in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
  370. Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
  371. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
  372. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.
  373. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
  374. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
  375. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
  376. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
  377. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
  378. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
  379. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.
  380. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
  381. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
  382. Paul’s Anguish Over Israel

    I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit
  383. as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see and ears that could not hear, to this very day.”
  384. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
  385. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
  386. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  387. to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
  388. by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.
  389. They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jews’ spiritual blessings, they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings.
  390. I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.
  391. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.
  392. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,
  393. God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

    We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
  394. these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
  395. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
  396. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.
  397. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.
  398. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.
  399. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments,
  400. The Church and Its Leaders

    Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ.
  401. Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
  402. What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?
  403. For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this.
  404. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present,
  405. hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
  406. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
  407. But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
  408. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
  409. and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband.
  410. In my judgment, she is happier if she stays as she is—and I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
  411. If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?
  412. They all ate the same spiritual food
  413. and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
  414. Concerning Spiritual Gifts

    Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
  415. Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
  416. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
  417. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
  418. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
  419. to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
  420. to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
  421. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
  422. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
  423. Intelligibility in Worship

    Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.
  424. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.
  425. So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church.
  426. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
  427. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.
  428. Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer, say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying?
  429. The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.
  430. If anyone thinks they are a prophet or otherwise gifted by the Spirit, let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command.
  431. it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
  432. So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.
  433. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.
  434. For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition.
  435. set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
  436. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
  437. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
  438. will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious?
  439. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
  440. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
  441. It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak,
  442. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
  443. in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love;
  444. Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
  445. By all this we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you.
  446. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
  447. I urged Titus to go to you and I sent our brother with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same footsteps by the same Spirit?
  448. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
  449. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?
  450. Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?
  451. So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?
  452. He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
  453. So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world.
  454. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”
  455. At that time the son born according to the flesh persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now.
  456. For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.
  457. Life by the Spirit

    You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.
  458. So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
  459. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
  460. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
  461. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
  462. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
  463. Doing Good to All

    Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
  464. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
  465. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.
  466. Praise for Spiritual Blessings in Christ

    Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
  467. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
  468. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
  469. in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
  470. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
  471. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
  472. which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.
  473. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
  474. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
  475. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;
  476. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
  477. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,
  478. speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,
  479. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
  480. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
  481. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
  482. for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
  483. Life Worthy of the Gospel

    Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel
  484. Imitating Christ’s Humility

    Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
  485. then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
  486. For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh—
  487. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
  488. and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.
  489. For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,
  490. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.
  491. Spiritual Fullness in Christ

    So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him,
  492. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.
  493. Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:
  494. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
  495. because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.
  496. You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.
  497. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.
  498. Do not quench the Spirit.
  499. May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  500. Stand Firm

    But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.
