  10. The Church and Its Leaders

    Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ.
  11. Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
  12. What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?
  13. For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this.
  14. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present,
  15. hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
  16. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
  17. But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
  18. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
  19. and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband.
  20. In my judgment, she is happier if she stays as she is—and I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
  21. If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?
  22. They all ate the same spiritual food
  23. and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
  24. Concerning Spiritual Gifts

    Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
  25. Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
  26. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
  27. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
  28. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
  29. to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
  30. to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
  31. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
  32. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
  33. Intelligibility in Worship

    Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.
  34. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.
  35. So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church.
  36. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
  37. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.
  38. Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer, say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying?
  39. The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.
  40. If anyone thinks they are a prophet or otherwise gifted by the Spirit, let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command.
  41. it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
  42. So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.
  43. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.
  44. For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition.
