(A)An oracle concerning (B)Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.

God's Wrath Against Nineveh

(C)The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
    the Lord is avenging and wrathful;
(D)the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries
    and (E)keeps wrath for his enemies.
(F)The Lord is slow to anger and (G)great in power,
    and (H)the Lord will by no means clear the guilty.
(I)His way is in whirlwind and storm,
    and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
(J)He rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
    he dries up all the rivers;
(K)Bashan and (L)Carmel wither;
    the bloom of (M)Lebanon withers.
(N)The mountains quake before him;
    (O)the hills melt;
the earth heaves before him,
    (P)the world and all who dwell in it.

(Q)Who can stand before his indignation?
    Who can endure the heat of his anger?
His wrath (R)is poured out like fire,
    and (S)the rocks are broken into pieces by him.
(T)The Lord is good,
    (U)a stronghold in the day of trouble;
(V)he knows those who take refuge in him.
    But (W)with an overflowing flood
he will make a complete end of the adversaries,[a]
    and (X)will pursue his enemies into darkness.
What (Y)do you plot against the Lord?
    (Z)He will make a complete end;
    trouble will not rise up a second time.
10 For they are (AA)like entangled thorns,
    like drunkards as they drink;
    (AB)they are consumed like stubble fully dried.
11 From you came one
    (AC)who plotted evil against the Lord,
    a worthless counselor.

12 Thus says the Lord,
“Though they are at full strength and many,
    (AD)they will be cut down and pass away.
(AE)Though I have afflicted you,
    I will afflict you no more.
13 And now (AF)I will break his yoke from off you
    and will burst your bonds apart.”

14 The Lord has given commandment about you:
    (AG)“No more shall your name be perpetuated;
from (AH)the house of your gods I will cut off
    the carved image and the metal image.
(AI)I will make your grave, (AJ)for you are vile.”

15 [b] (AK)Behold, upon the mountains, (AL)the feet of him
    who brings good news,
    who publishes peace!
(AM)Keep your feasts, O Judah;
    (AN)fulfill your vows,
(AO)for never again shall the worthless pass through you;
    he is utterly cut off.

The Destruction of Nineveh

(AP)The scatterer has come up against you.
    (AQ)Man the ramparts;
    watch the road;
dress for battle;[c]
    collect all your strength.

For (AR)the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
for plunderers have plundered them
    and (AS)ruined their branches.

The shield of his mighty men is red;
    (AT)his soldiers are clothed in scarlet.
The chariots come with flashing metal
    on the day he musters them;
    the cypress spears are brandished.
(AU)The chariots race madly through the streets;
    they rush to and fro through the squares;
they gleam like torches;
    they dart like lightning.
He remembers (AV)his officers;
    (AW)they stumble as they go,
they hasten to the wall;
    the siege tower[d] is set up.
(AX)The river gates are opened;
    the palace (AY)melts away;
its mistress[e] is (AZ)stripped;[f] she is carried off,
    her slave girls (BA)lamenting,
moaning like doves
    and beating their breasts.
(BB)Nineveh is like a pool
    whose waters run away.[g]
“Halt! Halt!” they cry,
    but (BC)none turns back.
Plunder the silver,
    plunder the gold!
There is no end of the treasure
    or of the wealth of all precious things.

10 (BD)Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    (BE)Hearts melt and (BF)knees tremble;
(BG)anguish is in all loins;
    (BH)all faces grow pale!
11 Where is the lions' den,
    the feeding place of (BI)the young lions,
where the lion and lioness went,
    where his cubs were, with (BJ)none to disturb?
12 (BK)The lion tore enough for his cubs
    and (BL)strangled prey for his lionesses;
he filled his caves with prey
    and his dens with torn flesh.

13 (BM)Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and (BN)I will burn your[h] chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and (BO)the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

Woe to Nineveh

Woe to (BP)the bloody city,
    all full of lies and plunder—
    (BQ)no end to the prey!
The crack of the whip, and (BR)rumble of the wheel,
    (BS)galloping horse and (BT)bounding chariot!
Horsemen charging,
    flashing sword and (BU)glittering spear,
(BV)hosts of slain,
    heaps of corpses,
dead bodies without end—
    they stumble over the bodies!
And all for the countless whorings of the (BW)prostitute,
    (BX)graceful and of deadly charms,
who betrays nations with her whorings,
    and peoples with her charms.

(BY)Behold, I am against you,
    declares the Lord of hosts,
    and (BZ)will lift up your skirts over your face;
and I will make nations look at (CA)your nakedness
    and kingdoms at your shame.
I will throw filth at you
    and (CB)treat you with contempt
    and make you (CC)a spectacle.
And all who look at you (CD)will shrink from you and say,
“Wasted is (CE)Nineveh; (CF)who will grieve for her?”
    (CG)Where shall I seek comforters for you?

(CH)Are you better than (CI)Thebes[i]
    that sat (CJ)by the Nile,
with water around her,
    her rampart a sea,
    and water her wall?
(CK)Cush was her strength;
    Egypt too, and that without limit;
    (CL)Put and the (CM)Libyans were her[j] helpers.

10 (CN)Yet she became an exile;
    she went into captivity;
(CO)her infants were dashed in pieces
    at the head of every street;
for her honored men (CP)lots were cast,
    (CQ)and all her great men were bound in chains.
11 (CR)You also will be drunken;
    you will go into hiding;
(CS)you will seek a refuge from the enemy.
12 All your fortresses are (CT)like fig trees
    with first-ripe figs—
if shaken they fall
    into the mouth of the eater.
13 Behold, your troops
    (CU)are women in your midst.
The gates of your land
    are wide open to your enemies;
    fire has devoured your bars.

14 (CV)Draw water for the siege;
    (CW)strengthen your forts;
go into the clay;
    tread the mortar;
    take hold of the brick mold!
15 There will the fire devour you;
    the sword will cut you off.
    It will (CX)devour you (CY)like the locust.
Multiply yourselves (CZ)like the locust;
    multiply (DA)like the grasshopper!
16 You increased (DB)your merchants
    more than the stars of the heavens.
    (DC)The locust spreads its wings and flies away.

17 Your (DD)princes are (DE)like grasshoppers,
    (DF)your scribes[k] like clouds of locusts
settling on the fences
    in a day of cold—
when the sun rises, they fly away;
    no one knows where they are.

18 Your shepherds (DG)are asleep,
    O king of Assyria;
    (DH)your nobles slumber.
Your people (DI)are scattered on the mountains
    with none to gather them.
19 There is no easing your hurt;
    (DJ)your wound is grievous.
All who hear the news about you
    (DK)clap their hands over you.
For (DL)upon whom has not come
    your unceasing evil?

(DM)The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw.

Habakkuk's Complaint

O Lord, (DN)how long shall I cry for help,
    and you will not hear?
Or cry to you (DO)“Violence!”
    and you will not save?
(DP)Why do you make me see iniquity,
    and why do you idly look at wrong?
Destruction (DQ)and violence are before me;
    strife and contention arise.
(DR)So the law is paralyzed,
    and justice never goes forth.
(DS)For the wicked surround the righteous;
    so justice goes forth perverted.

The Lord's Answer

(DT)“Look among the nations, and see;
    wonder and be astounded.
(DU)For I am doing a work in your days
    that you would not believe if told.
For behold, (DV)I am raising up the Chaldeans,
    that bitter and hasty nation,
(DW)who march through the breadth of the earth,
    (DX)to seize dwellings not their own.
They are dreaded and fearsome;
    (DY)their justice and dignity go forth from themselves.
(DZ)Their horses are swifter than leopards,
    more fierce than (EA)the evening wolves;
    their horsemen press proudly on.
Their horsemen come from afar;
    (EB)they fly like an eagle swift to devour.
They all come (EC)for violence,
    all their faces forward.
    They gather captives (ED)like sand.
10 At kings they scoff,
    and at rulers they laugh.
(EE)They laugh at every fortress,
    for (EF)they pile up earth and take it.
11 Then they sweep by like the wind and go on,
    (EG)guilty men, (EH)whose own might is their god!”

Habakkuk's Second Complaint

12 Are you not (EI)from everlasting,
    O Lord my God, my Holy One?
    (EJ)We shall not die.
O Lord, (EK)you have ordained them as a judgment,
    and you, O (EL)Rock, have established them for reproof.
13 You who are (EM)of purer eyes than to see evil
    and cannot look at wrong,
(EN)why do you idly look at traitors
    and (EO)remain silent when the wicked swallows up
    the man more righteous than he?
14 You make mankind like the fish of the sea,
    like crawling things that have no ruler.
15 (EP)He[l] brings all of them up (EQ)with a hook;
    he drags them out with his net;
he gathers them in his dragnet;
    so he rejoices and is glad.
16 (ER)Therefore he sacrifices to his net
    and makes offerings to his dragnet;
for by them he lives in luxury,[m]
    and his food is rich.
17 Is he then to keep on emptying his net
    (ES)and mercilessly killing nations forever?

I will (ET)take my stand at my watchpost
    and station myself on the tower,
and (EU)look out to see (EV)what he will say to me,
    and what I will answer concerning my complaint.

The Righteous Shall Live by His Faith

And the Lord answered me:

(EW)“Write the vision;
    make it plain on tablets,
    so he may run who reads it.
For still (EX)the vision awaits its appointed time;
    it hastens to the end—it will not lie.
If it seems slow, (EY)wait for it;
    (EZ)it will surely come; it will not delay.

“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him,
    but (FA)the righteous shall live by his faith.[n]

“Moreover, wine[o] is (FB)a traitor,
    an arrogant man who is never at rest.[p]
His greed is as wide as Sheol;
    like death (FC)he has never enough.
(FD)He gathers for himself all nations
    and collects as his own all peoples.”

Woe to the Chaldeans

Shall not all these (FE)take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say,

(FF)“Woe to him (FG)who heaps up what is not his own—
    for (FH)how long?—
    and (FI)loads himself with pledges!”
(FJ)Will not your debtors suddenly arise,
    and those awake who will make you tremble?
    Then you will be spoil for them.
(FK)Because you have plundered many nations,
    all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you,
(FL)for the blood of man and (FM)violence to the earth,
    to cities and all who dwell in them.

(FN)“Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house,
    (FO)to (FP)set his nest on high,
    to be safe from the reach of harm!
10 You have devised shame for your house
    (FQ)by cutting off many peoples;
    you have forfeited your life.
11 For (FR)the stone will cry out from the wall,
    and the beam from the woodwork respond.

12 (FS)“Woe to him (FT)who builds a town with blood
    and founds a city on iniquity!
13 Behold, is it not from the Lord of hosts
    that (FU)peoples labor merely for fire,
    and nations weary themselves for nothing?
14 (FV)For the earth will be filled
    with the knowledge of (FW)the glory of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

15 (FX)“Woe to him (FY)who makes his neighbors drink—
    you pour out your wrath and make them drunk,
    in order to gaze (FZ)at their nakedness!
16 You will have your fill (GA)of shame instead of glory.
    (GB)Drink, yourself, and show your uncircumcision!
(GC)The cup in the Lord's right hand
    will come around to you,
    and (GD)utter shame will come upon your glory!
17 (GE)The violence (GF)done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
    as will the destruction of the beasts that terrified them,
(GG)for the blood of man and violence to the earth,
    to cities and all who dwell in them.

18 (GH)“What profit is an idol
    when its maker has shaped it,
    a metal image, (GI)a teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
    when he makes (GJ)speechless idols!
19 (GK)Woe to him (GL)who says to a wooden thing, Awake;
    to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
    and (GM)there is no breath at all in it.
20 But (GN)the Lord is in his holy temple;
    (GO)let all the earth keep silence before him.”

Habakkuk's Prayer

A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth.

O Lord, (GP)I have heard the report of you,
    and (GQ)your work, O Lord, do I fear.
In the midst of the years (GR)revive it;
    in the midst of the years make it known;
    (GS)in wrath remember mercy.
God came from (GT)Teman,
    (GU)and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah
His splendor covered the heavens,
    and the earth was full of his praise.
(GV)His brightness was like the light;
    rays flashed from his hand;
    and there he veiled his power.
(GW)Before him went pestilence,
    and plague followed (GX)at his heels.[q]
He stood (GY)and measured the earth;
    he looked and shook the nations;
then the (GZ)eternal mountains (HA)were scattered;
    the everlasting hills sank low.
    His were (HB)the everlasting ways.
I saw the tents of (HC)Cushan in affliction;
    (HD)the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.
(HE)Was your wrath against the rivers, O Lord?
    Was your anger against the rivers,
    (HF)or your indignation against the sea,
(HG)when you rode on your horses,
    (HH)on your chariot of salvation?
You stripped the sheath from your bow,
    calling for many arrows.[r] Selah
    (HI)You split the earth with rivers.
10 (HJ)The mountains saw you and writhed;
    the raging waters swept on;
(HK)the deep gave forth its voice;
    (HL)it lifted its hands on high.
11 (HM)The sun and moon stood still in their place
    (HN)at the light of your arrows as they sped,
    at the flash of your glittering spear.
12 (HO)You marched through the earth in fury;
    (HP)you threshed the nations in anger.
13 (HQ)You went out for the salvation of your people,
    for the salvation of (HR)your anointed.
(HS)You crushed the head of the house of the wicked,
    laying him bare from thigh to neck.[s] Selah
14 You pierced with his own arrows the heads of his warriors,
    who came like a whirlwind to scatter me,
    rejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret.
15 (HT)You trampled the sea with your horses,
    the surging of mighty waters.

16 (HU)I hear, and (HV)my body trembles;
    my lips quiver at the sound;
(HW)rottenness enters into my bones;
    my legs tremble beneath me.
Yet (HX)I will quietly wait for the day of trouble
    to come upon people who invade us.

Habakkuk Rejoices in the Lord

17 Though the fig tree should not blossom,
    nor fruit be on the vines,
the produce of the olive fail
    and the fields yield no food,
the flock be cut off from the fold
    and there be no herd in the stalls,
18 (HY)yet I will rejoice in the Lord;
    (HZ)I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
19 God, the Lord, is my strength;
    (IA)he makes my feet like the deer's;
    he makes me (IB)tread on my (IC)high places.

(ID)To the choirmaster: with (IE)stringed[t] instruments.

The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah the son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, (IF)in the days of (IG)Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

The Coming Judgment on Judah

(IH)“I will utterly sweep away everything
    from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.
“I will sweep away (II)man and beast;
    I will sweep away the birds of the heavens
    and (IJ)the fish of the sea,
and (IK)the rubble[u] with the wicked.
    I will (IL)cut off mankind
    from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.
“I will stretch out my hand against Judah
    and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem;
(IM)and I will cut off from this place the remnant of Baal
    and the name of the idolatrous priests along with the priests,
(IN)those who bow down on the roofs
    to the host of the heavens,
(IO)those who bow down and swear to the Lord
    and yet swear by (IP)Milcom,[v]
(IQ)those who have turned back from following the Lord,
    (IR)who do not seek the Lord or inquire of him.”

The Day of the Lord Is Near

(IS)Be silent before the Lord God!
    For (IT)the day of the Lord is near;
(IU)the Lord has prepared a sacrifice
    and (IV)consecrated his guests.
And on the day of the Lord's sacrifice—
(IW)“I will punish the officials and the king's sons
    and (IX)all who array themselves in foreign attire.
On that day I will punish
    everyone (IY)who leaps over the threshold,
and those who fill their master's[w] house
    with violence and fraud.

10 “On that day,” declares the Lord,
    “a cry will be heard from (IZ)the Fish Gate,
(JA)a wail from (JB)the Second Quarter,
    a loud crash from the hills.
11 (JC)Wail, O inhabitants of the Mortar!
    For all the traders[x] are no more;
    all who weigh out silver are cut off.
12 At that time (JD)I will search Jerusalem with lamps,
    and I will punish the men
(JE)who are complacent,[y]
    (JF)those who say in their hearts,
‘The Lord will not do good,
    nor will he do ill.’
13 Their goods shall be (JG)plundered,
    and their houses laid waste.
(JH)Though they build houses,
    they shall not inhabit them;
(JI)though they plant vineyards,
    they shall not drink wine from them.”

14 (JJ)The great day of the Lord is near,
    near and hastening fast;
the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter;
    (JK)the mighty man cries aloud there.
15 (JL)A day of wrath is that day,
    a day of distress and anguish,
a day of (JM)ruin and devastation,
    (JN)a day of darkness and gloom,
(JO)a day of clouds and thick darkness,
16     (JP)a day of trumpet blast and battle cry
(JQ)against the fortified cities
    and against the lofty battlements.

17 (JR)I will bring distress on mankind,
    so that they shall walk (JS)like the blind,
    because they have sinned against the Lord;
(JT)their blood shall be poured out like dust,
    and their flesh (JU)like dung.
18 (JV)Neither their silver nor their gold
    shall be able to deliver them
    on the day of the wrath of the Lord.
(JW)In the fire of his jealousy,
    (JX)all the earth shall be consumed;
(JY)for a full and sudden end
    he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.

Judgment on Judah's Enemies

Gather together, yes, gather,
    O (JZ)shameless nation,
(KA)before the decree takes effect[z]
    —before the day passes away (KB)like chaff—
(KC)before there comes upon you
    the burning anger of the Lord,
before there comes upon you
    the day of the anger of the Lord.
(KD)Seek the Lord, (KE)all you humble of the land,
    who do his just commands;[aa]
(KF)seek righteousness; seek humility;
    (KG)perhaps (KH)you may be hidden
    on the day of the anger of the Lord.
(KI)For Gaza shall be deserted,
    and Ashkelon shall become a desolation;
Ashdod's people shall be driven out at noon,
    and Ekron shall be uprooted.

Woe to (KJ)you inhabitants of the seacoast,
    you nation of (KK)the Cherethites!
(KL)The word of the Lord is against you,
    (KM)O Canaan, land of the Philistines;
    and I will destroy you (KN)until no inhabitant is left.
(KO)And you, O seacoast, (KP)shall be pastures,
    with meadows[ab] for shepherds
    and folds for flocks.
(KQ)The seacoast shall become the possession
    of (KR)the remnant of the house of Judah,
    (KS)on which they shall graze,
and in the houses of Ashkelon
    they shall lie down at evening.
For the Lord their God (KT)will be mindful of them
    and (KU)restore their fortunes.

“I have heard (KV)the taunts of Moab
    and (KW)the revilings of the Ammonites,
how they have taunted my people
    and made boasts (KX)against their territory.
Therefore, (KY)as I live,” declares the Lord of hosts,
    the God of Israel,
“Moab shall become (KZ)like Sodom,
    and the Ammonites (LA)like Gomorrah,
a land possessed by nettles and salt pits,
    and a waste forever.
The remnant of my people shall plunder them,
    and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.”
10 This shall be their lot in return (LB)for their pride,
    because they taunted and boasted
    against the people of the Lord of hosts.
11 The Lord will be awesome against them;
    (LC)for he will famish all the gods of the earth,
and (LD)to him shall bow down,
    each in its place,
    all (LE)the lands of the nations.

12 (LF)You also, O Cushites,
    shall be slain by my sword.

13 And he will stretch out his hand against the north
    (LG)and destroy Assyria,
and he (LH)will make Nineveh a desolation,
    a dry waste like the desert.
14 (LI)Herds shall lie down in her midst,
    all kinds of beasts;[ac]
(LJ)even the owl and the hedgehog[ad]
    shall lodge in her capitals;
a voice shall hoot in the window;
    devastation will be on the threshold;
    for (LK)her cedar work will be laid bare.
15 This is the exultant city
    (LL)that lived securely,
that said in her heart,
    “I am, and there is no one else.”
What a desolation she has become,
    (LM)a lair for wild beasts!
(LN)Everyone who passes by her
    hisses and (LO)shakes his fist.

Judgment on Jerusalem and the Nations

Woe to her who is rebellious and defiled,
    (LP)the oppressing city!
She listens to no voice;
    (LQ)she accepts no correction.
(LR)She does not trust in the Lord;
    she does not draw near to her God.

(LS)Her officials within her
    are roaring lions;
her judges are (LT)evening wolves
    that leave nothing till the morning.
(LU)Her prophets are fickle, treacherous men;
(LV)her priests (LW)profane what is holy;
    they do violence to the law.
The Lord within her (LX)is righteous;
    he does no injustice;
every morning he shows forth his justice;
    each dawn he does not fail;
    but (LY)the unjust knows no shame.

(LZ)“I have cut off nations;
    their battlements are in ruins;
I have laid waste their streets
    (MA)so that no one walks in them;
their cities have been made desolate,
    without a man, without an inhabitant.
(MB)I said, ‘Surely you will fear me;
    (MC)you will accept correction.
Then your[ae] dwelling would not be cut off
    according to all that I have appointed against you.’[af]
But (MD)all the more they were eager
    to make all their deeds corrupt.

“Therefore (ME)wait for me,” declares the Lord,
    “for the day when I rise up to seize the prey.
For my decision is (MF)to gather nations,
    to assemble kingdoms,
to pour out upon them my indignation,
    all my burning anger;
for in the fire of my jealousy
    (MG)all the earth shall be consumed.

The Conversion of the Nations

“For at that time I will change the speech of the peoples
    to (MH)a pure speech,
that all of them may call upon the name of the Lord
    and serve him with one accord.
10 (MI)From beyond the rivers (MJ)of Cush
    my worshipers, the daughter of my dispersed ones,
    shall bring my offering.

11 (MK)“On that day (ML)you shall not be put to shame
    because of the deeds by which you have rebelled against me;
for then (MM)I will remove from your midst
    your proudly exultant ones,
and (MN)you shall no longer be haughty
    in my holy mountain.
12 But I will leave in your midst
    a people (MO)humble and lowly.
(MP)They shall seek refuge in the name of the Lord,
13     (MQ)those who are left in Israel;
they (MR)shall do no injustice
    and speak no lies,
(MS)nor shall there be found in their mouth
    a deceitful tongue.
(MT)For they shall graze and lie down,
    and none shall make them afraid.”

Israel's Joy and Restoration

14 (MU)Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion;
    shout, O Israel!
Rejoice and exult with all your heart,
    O daughter of Jerusalem!
15 The Lord has taken away the judgments against you;
    he has cleared away your enemies.
(MV)The King of Israel, (MW)the Lord, is in your midst;
    you shall never again fear evil.
16 (MX)On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
“Fear not, O Zion;
    (MY)let not your hands grow weak.
17 (MZ)The Lord your God is in your midst,
    (NA)a mighty one who will save;
(NB)he will rejoice over you with gladness;
    he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.
18 I will gather those of you who mourn (NC)for the festival,
    so that you will no longer suffer reproach.[ag]
19 Behold, at that time (ND)I will deal
    with all your oppressors.
And (NE)I will save the lame
    and gather the outcast,
and I will change (NF)their shame into (NG)praise
    and renown in all the earth.
20 (NH)At that time I will bring you in,
    at the time when I gather you together;
for I will make you renowned and praised
    among all the peoples of the earth,
(NI)when I restore your fortunes
    before your eyes,” says the Lord.

A prophecy(A) concerning Nineveh.(B) The book of the vision(C) of Nahum the Elkoshite.

The Lord’s Anger Against Nineveh

The Lord is a jealous(D) and avenging God;
    the Lord takes vengeance(E) and is filled with wrath.
The Lord takes vengeance on his foes
    and vents his wrath against his enemies.(F)
The Lord is slow to anger(G) but great in power;
    the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.(H)
His way is in the whirlwind(I) and the storm,(J)
    and clouds(K) are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes(L) the sea and dries it up;(M)
    he makes all the rivers run dry.
Bashan and Carmel(N) wither
    and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.
The mountains quake(O) before him
    and the hills melt away.(P)
The earth trembles(Q) at his presence,
    the world and all who live in it.(R)
Who can withstand(S) his indignation?
    Who can endure(T) his fierce anger?(U)
His wrath is poured out like fire;(V)
    the rocks are shattered(W) before him.

The Lord is good,(X)
    a refuge in times of trouble.(Y)
He cares for(Z) those who trust in him,(AA)
    but with an overwhelming flood(AB)
he will make an end of Nineveh;
    he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness.

Whatever they plot(AC) against the Lord
    he will bring[a] to an end;
    trouble will not come a second time.
10 They will be entangled among thorns(AD)
    and drunk(AE) from their wine;
    they will be consumed like dry stubble.[b](AF)
11 From you, Nineveh, has one come forth
    who plots evil against the Lord
    and devises wicked plans.

12 This is what the Lord says:

“Although they have allies and are numerous,
    they will be destroyed(AG) and pass away.
Although I have afflicted you, Judah,
    I will afflict you no more.(AH)
13 Now I will break their yoke(AI) from your neck
    and tear your shackles away.”(AJ)

14 The Lord has given a command concerning you, Nineveh:
    “You will have no descendants to bear your name.(AK)
I will destroy the images(AL) and idols
    that are in the temple of your gods.
I will prepare your grave,(AM)
    for you are vile.”

15 Look, there on the mountains,
    the feet of one who brings good news,(AN)
    who proclaims peace!(AO)
Celebrate your festivals,(AP) Judah,
    and fulfill your vows.
No more will the wicked invade you;(AQ)
    they will be completely destroyed.[c]

Nineveh to Fall

[d]An attacker(AR) advances against you, Nineveh.
    Guard the fortress,
    watch the road,
    brace yourselves,
    marshal all your strength!

The Lord will restore(AS) the splendor(AT) of Jacob
    like the splendor of Israel,
though destroyers have laid them waste
    and have ruined their vines.

The shields of the soldiers are red;
    the warriors are clad in scarlet.(AU)
The metal on the chariots flashes
    on the day they are made ready;
    the spears of juniper are brandished.[e]
The chariots(AV) storm through the streets,
    rushing back and forth through the squares.
They look like flaming torches;
    they dart about like lightning.

Nineveh summons her picked troops,
    yet they stumble(AW) on their way.
They dash to the city wall;
    the protective shield is put in place.
The river gates(AX) are thrown open
    and the palace collapses.
It is decreed[f] that Nineveh
    be exiled and carried away.
Her female slaves moan(AY) like doves
    and beat on their breasts.(AZ)
Nineveh is like a pool
    whose water is draining away.
“Stop! Stop!” they cry,
    but no one turns back.
Plunder the silver!
    Plunder the gold!
The supply is endless,
    the wealth from all its treasures!
10 She is pillaged, plundered, stripped!
    Hearts melt,(BA) knees give way,
    bodies tremble, every face grows pale.(BB)

11 Where now is the lions’ den,(BC)
    the place where they fed their young,
where the lion and lioness went,
    and the cubs, with nothing to fear?
12 The lion killed(BD) enough for his cubs
    and strangled the prey for his mate,
filling his lairs(BE) with the kill
    and his dens with the prey.(BF)

13 “I am against(BG) you,”
    declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will burn up your chariots in smoke,(BH)
    and the sword(BI) will devour your young lions.
    I will leave you no prey on the earth.
The voices of your messengers
    will no longer be heard.”(BJ)

Woe to Nineveh

Woe to the city of blood,(BK)
    full of lies,(BL)
full of plunder,
    never without victims!
The crack of whips,
    the clatter of wheels,
galloping horses
    and jolting chariots!
Charging cavalry,
    flashing swords
    and glittering spears!
Many casualties,
    piles of dead,
bodies without number,
    people stumbling over the corpses(BM)
all because of the wanton lust of a prostitute,
    alluring, the mistress of sorceries,(BN)
who enslaved nations by her prostitution(BO)
    and peoples by her witchcraft.

“I am against(BP) you,” declares the Lord Almighty.
    “I will lift your skirts(BQ) over your face.
I will show the nations your nakedness(BR)
    and the kingdoms your shame.
I will pelt you with filth,(BS)
    I will treat you with contempt(BT)
    and make you a spectacle.(BU)
All who see you will flee(BV) from you and say,
    ‘Nineveh(BW) is in ruins(BX)—who will mourn for her?’(BY)
    Where can I find anyone to comfort(BZ) you?”

Are you better than(CA) Thebes,(CB)
    situated on the Nile,(CC)
    with water around her?
The river was her defense,
    the waters her wall.
Cush[g](CD) and Egypt were her boundless strength;
    Put(CE) and Libya(CF) were among her allies.
10 Yet she was taken captive(CG)
    and went into exile.
Her infants were dashed(CH) to pieces
    at every street corner.
Lots(CI) were cast for her nobles,
    and all her great men were put in chains.(CJ)
11 You too will become drunk;(CK)
    you will go into hiding(CL)
    and seek refuge from the enemy.

12 All your fortresses are like fig trees
    with their first ripe fruit;(CM)
when they are shaken,
    the figs(CN) fall into the mouth of the eater.
13 Look at your troops—
    they are all weaklings.(CO)
The gates(CP) of your land
    are wide open to your enemies;
    fire has consumed the bars of your gates.(CQ)

14 Draw water for the siege,(CR)
    strengthen your defenses!(CS)
Work the clay,
    tread the mortar,
    repair the brickwork!
15 There the fire(CT) will consume you;
    the sword(CU) will cut you down—
    they will devour you like a swarm of locusts.
Multiply like grasshoppers,
    multiply like locusts!(CV)
16 You have increased the number of your merchants
    till they are more numerous than the stars in the sky,
but like locusts(CW) they strip the land
    and then fly away.
17 Your guards are like locusts,(CX)
    your officials like swarms of locusts
    that settle in the walls on a cold day—
but when the sun appears they fly away,
    and no one knows where.

18 King of Assyria, your shepherds[h] slumber;(CY)
    your nobles lie down to rest.(CZ)
Your people are scattered(DA) on the mountains
    with no one to gather them.
19 Nothing can heal you;(DB)
    your wound is fatal.
All who hear the news about you
    clap their hands(DC) at your fall,
for who has not felt
    your endless cruelty?(DD)

The prophecy(DE) that Habakkuk the prophet received.

Habakkuk’s Complaint

How long,(DF) Lord, must I call for help,
    but you do not listen?(DG)
Or cry out to you, “Violence!”
    but you do not save?(DH)
Why do you make me look at injustice?
    Why do you tolerate(DI) wrongdoing?(DJ)
Destruction and violence(DK) are before me;
    there is strife,(DL) and conflict abounds.
Therefore the law(DM) is paralyzed,
    and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous,
    so that justice(DN) is perverted.(DO)

The Lord’s Answer

“Look at the nations and watch—
    and be utterly amazed.(DP)
For I am going to do something in your days
    that you would not believe,
    even if you were told.(DQ)
I am raising up the Babylonians,[i](DR)
    that ruthless and impetuous people,
who sweep across the whole earth(DS)
    to seize dwellings not their own.(DT)
They are a feared and dreaded people;(DU)
    they are a law to themselves
    and promote their own honor.
Their horses are swifter(DV) than leopards,
    fiercer than wolves(DW) at dusk.
Their cavalry gallops headlong;
    their horsemen come from afar.
They fly like an eagle swooping to devour;
    they all come intent on violence.
Their hordes[j] advance like a desert wind
    and gather prisoners(DX) like sand.
10 They mock kings
    and scoff at rulers.(DY)
They laugh at all fortified cities;
    by building earthen ramps(DZ) they capture them.
11 Then they sweep past like the wind(EA) and go on—
    guilty people, whose own strength is their god.”(EB)

Habakkuk’s Second Complaint

12 Lord, are you not from everlasting?(EC)
    My God, my Holy One,(ED) you[k] will never die.(EE)
You, Lord, have appointed(EF) them to execute judgment;
    you, my Rock,(EG) have ordained them to punish.
13 Your eyes are too pure(EH) to look on evil;
    you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.(EI)
Why then do you tolerate(EJ) the treacherous?(EK)
    Why are you silent while the wicked
    swallow up those more righteous than themselves?(EL)
14 You have made people like the fish in the sea,
    like the sea creatures that have no ruler.
15 The wicked(EM) foe pulls all of them up with hooks,(EN)
    he catches them in his net,(EO)
he gathers them up in his dragnet;
    and so he rejoices and is glad.
16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net
    and burns incense(EP) to his dragnet,
for by his net he lives in luxury
    and enjoys the choicest food.
17 Is he to keep on emptying his net,
    destroying nations without mercy?(EQ)

I will stand at my watch(ER)
    and station myself on the ramparts;(ES)
I will look to see what he will say(ET) to me,
    and what answer I am to give to this complaint.[l](EU)

The Lord’s Answer

Then the Lord replied:

“Write(EV) down the revelation
    and make it plain on tablets
    so that a herald[m] may run with it.
For the revelation awaits an appointed time;(EW)
    it speaks of the end(EX)
    and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait(EY) for it;
    it[n] will certainly come
    and will not delay.(EZ)

“See, the enemy is puffed up;
    his desires are not upright—
    but the righteous person(FA) will live by his faithfulness[o](FB)
indeed, wine(FC) betrays him;
    he is arrogant(FD) and never at rest.
Because he is as greedy as the grave
    and like death is never satisfied,(FE)
he gathers to himself all the nations
    and takes captive(FF) all the peoples.

“Will not all of them taunt(FG) him with ridicule and scorn, saying,

“‘Woe to him who piles up stolen goods
    and makes himself wealthy by extortion!(FH)
    How long must this go on?’
Will not your creditors suddenly arise?
    Will they not wake up and make you tremble?
    Then you will become their prey.(FI)
Because you have plundered many nations,
    the peoples who are left will plunder you.(FJ)
For you have shed human blood;(FK)
    you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.(FL)

“Woe to him who builds(FM) his house by unjust gain,(FN)
    setting his nest(FO) on high
    to escape the clutches of ruin!
10 You have plotted the ruin(FP) of many peoples,
    shaming(FQ) your own house and forfeiting your life.
11 The stones(FR) of the wall will cry out,
    and the beams of the woodwork will echo it.

12 “Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed(FS)
    and establishes a town by injustice!
13 Has not the Lord Almighty determined
    that the people’s labor is only fuel for the fire,(FT)
    that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?(FU)
14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory(FV) of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.(FW)

15 “Woe to him who gives drink(FX) to his neighbors,
    pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk,
    so that he can gaze on their naked bodies!
16 You will be filled with shame(FY) instead of glory.(FZ)
    Now it is your turn! Drink(GA) and let your nakedness be exposed[p]!(GB)
The cup(GC) from the Lord’s right hand is coming around to you,
    and disgrace will cover your glory.
17 The violence(GD) you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
    and your destruction of animals will terrify you.(GE)
For you have shed human blood;(GF)
    you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

18 “Of what value(GG) is an idol(GH) carved by a craftsman?
    Or an image(GI) that teaches lies?
For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation;
    he makes idols that cannot speak.(GJ)
19 Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’
    Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’(GK)
Can it give guidance?
    It is covered with gold and silver;(GL)
    there is no breath in it.”(GM)

20 The Lord is in his holy temple;(GN)
    let all the earth be silent(GO) before him.

Habakkuk’s Prayer

A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet. On shigionoth.[q](GP)

Lord, I have heard(GQ) of your fame;
    I stand in awe(GR) of your deeds, Lord.(GS)
Repeat(GT) them in our day,
    in our time make them known;
    in wrath remember mercy.(GU)

God came from Teman,(GV)
    the Holy One(GW) from Mount Paran.[r](GX)
His glory covered the heavens(GY)
    and his praise filled the earth.(GZ)
His splendor was like the sunrise;(HA)
    rays flashed from his hand,
    where his power(HB) was hidden.
Plague(HC) went before him;
    pestilence followed his steps.
He stood, and shook the earth;
    he looked, and made the nations tremble.
The ancient mountains crumbled(HD)
    and the age-old hills(HE) collapsed(HF)
    but he marches on forever.(HG)
I saw the tents of Cushan in distress,
    the dwellings of Midian(HH) in anguish.(HI)

Were you angry with the rivers,(HJ) Lord?
    Was your wrath against the streams?
Did you rage against the sea(HK)
    when you rode your horses
    and your chariots to victory?(HL)
You uncovered your bow,
    you called for many arrows.(HM)
You split the earth with rivers;
10     the mountains saw you and writhed.(HN)
Torrents of water swept by;
    the deep roared(HO)
    and lifted its waves(HP) on high.

11 Sun and moon stood still(HQ) in the heavens
    at the glint of your flying arrows,(HR)
    at the lightning(HS) of your flashing spear.
12 In wrath you strode through the earth
    and in anger you threshed(HT) the nations.
13 You came out(HU) to deliver(HV) your people,
    to save your anointed(HW) one.
You crushed(HX) the leader of the land of wickedness,
    you stripped him from head to foot.
14 With his own spear you pierced his head
    when his warriors stormed out to scatter us,(HY)
gloating as though about to devour
    the wretched(HZ) who were in hiding.
15 You trampled the sea(IA) with your horses,
    churning the great waters.(IB)

16 I heard and my heart pounded,
    my lips quivered at the sound;
decay crept into my bones,
    and my legs trembled.(IC)
Yet I will wait patiently(ID) for the day of calamity
    to come on the nation invading us.
17 Though the fig tree does not bud
    and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
    and the fields produce no food,(IE)
though there are no sheep in the pen
    and no cattle in the stalls,(IF)
18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,(IG)
    I will be joyful in God my Savior.(IH)

19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength;(II)
    he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
    he enables me to tread on the heights.(IJ)

For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.

The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah(IK) son of Amon(IL) king of Judah:

Judgment on the Whole Earth in the Day of the Lord

“I will sweep away everything
    from the face of the earth,”(IM)
declares the Lord.
“I will sweep away both man and beast;(IN)
    I will sweep away the birds in the sky(IO)
    and the fish in the sea—
    and the idols that cause the wicked to stumble.”[s]

“When I destroy all mankind
    on the face of the earth,”(IP)
declares the Lord,(IQ)
“I will stretch out my hand(IR) against Judah
    and against all who live in Jerusalem.
I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place,(IS)
    the very names of the idolatrous priests(IT)
those who bow down on the roofs
    to worship the starry host,(IU)
those who bow down and swear by the Lord
    and who also swear by Molek,[t](IV)
those who turn back from following(IW) the Lord
    and neither seek(IX) the Lord nor inquire(IY) of him.”

Be silent(IZ) before the Sovereign Lord,
    for the day of the Lord(JA) is near.
The Lord has prepared a sacrifice;(JB)
    he has consecrated those he has invited.

“On the day of the Lord’s sacrifice
    I will punish(JC) the officials
    and the king’s sons(JD)
and all those clad
    in foreign clothes.
On that day I will punish
    all who avoid stepping on the threshold,[u](JE)
who fill the temple of their gods
    with violence and deceit.(JF)

10 “On that day,(JG)
    declares the Lord,
“a cry will go up from the Fish Gate,(JH)
    wailing(JI) from the New Quarter,
    and a loud crash from the hills.
11 Wail,(JJ) you who live in the market district[v];
    all your merchants will be wiped out,
    all who trade with[w] silver will be destroyed.(JK)
12 At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps
    and punish those who are complacent,(JL)
    who are like wine left on its dregs,(JM)
who think, ‘The Lord will do nothing,(JN)
    either good or bad.’(JO)
13 Their wealth will be plundered,(JP)
    their houses demolished.
Though they build houses,
    they will not live in them;
though they plant vineyards,
    they will not drink the wine.”(JQ)

14 The great day of the Lord(JR) is near(JS)
    near and coming quickly.
The cry on the day of the Lord is bitter;
    the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.
15 That day will be a day of wrath—
    a day of distress and anguish,
        a day of trouble and ruin,
    a day of darkness(JT) and gloom,
        a day of clouds and blackness(JU)
16     a day of trumpet and battle cry(JV)
against the fortified cities
    and against the corner towers.(JW)

17 “I will bring such distress(JX) on all people
    that they will grope about like those who are blind,(JY)
    because they have sinned against the Lord.
Their blood will be poured out(JZ) like dust
    and their entrails like dung.(KA)
18 Neither their silver nor their gold
    will be able to save them
    on the day of the Lord’s wrath.”(KB)

In the fire of his jealousy(KC)
    the whole earth will be consumed,(KD)
for he will make a sudden end
    of all who live on the earth.(KE)

Judah and Jerusalem Judged Along With the Nations

Judah Summoned to Repent

Gather together,(KF) gather yourselves together,
    you shameful(KG) nation,
before the decree takes effect
    and that day passes like windblown chaff,(KH)
before the Lord’s fierce anger(KI)
    comes upon you,
before the day of the Lord’s wrath(KJ)
    comes upon you.
Seek(KK) the Lord, all you humble of the land,
    you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness,(KL) seek humility;(KM)
    perhaps you will be sheltered(KN)
    on the day of the Lord’s anger.

Philistia

Gaza(KO) will be abandoned
    and Ashkelon(KP) left in ruins.
At midday Ashdod will be emptied
    and Ekron uprooted.
Woe to you who live by the sea,
    you Kerethite(KQ) people;
the word of the Lord is against you,(KR)
    Canaan, land of the Philistines.
He says, “I will destroy you,
    and none will be left.”(KS)
The land by the sea will become pastures
    having wells for shepherds
    and pens for flocks.(KT)
That land will belong
    to the remnant(KU) of the people of Judah;
    there they will find pasture.
In the evening they will lie down
    in the houses of Ashkelon.
The Lord their God will care for them;
    he will restore their fortunes.[x](KV)

Moab and Ammon

“I have heard the insults(KW) of Moab(KX)
    and the taunts of the Ammonites,(KY)
who insulted(KZ) my people
    and made threats against their land.(LA)
Therefore, as surely as I live,”
    declares the Lord Almighty,
    the God of Israel,
“surely Moab(LB) will become like Sodom,(LC)
    the Ammonites(LD) like Gomorrah—
a place of weeds and salt pits,
    a wasteland forever.
The remnant of my people will plunder(LE) them;
    the survivors(LF) of my nation will inherit their land.(LG)

10 This is what they will get in return for their pride,(LH)
    for insulting(LI) and mocking
    the people of the Lord Almighty.(LJ)
11 The Lord will be awesome(LK) to them
    when he destroys all the gods(LL) of the earth.(LM)
Distant nations will bow down to him,(LN)

leaving Nineveh(LR) utterly desolate
    and dry as the desert.(LS)
14 Flocks and herds(LT) will lie down there,
    creatures of every kind.
The desert owl(LU) and the screech owl(LV)
    will roost on her columns.
Their hooting will echo through the windows,
    rubble will fill the doorways,
    the beams of cedar will be exposed.
15 This is the city of revelry(LW)

    she does not draw near(MI) to her God.
Her officials within her
    are roaring lions;(MJ)
her rulers are evening wolves,(MK)
    who leave nothing for the morning.(ML)
Her prophets are unprincipled;
    they are treacherous people.(MM)
Her priests profane the sanctuary
    and do violence to the law.(MN)
The Lord within her is righteous;(MO)
    he does no wrong.(MP)
Morning by morning(MQ) he dispenses his justice,

Jerusalem Remains Unrepentant

“I have destroyed nations;
    their strongholds are demolished.
I have left their streets deserted,
    with no one passing through.
Their cities are laid waste;(MT)
    they are deserted and empty.
Of Jerusalem I thought,
    ‘Surely you will fear me
    and accept correction!’(MU)
Then her place of refuge[z] would not be destroyed,
    nor all my punishments come upon[aa] her.
But they were still eager
    to act corruptly(MV) in all they did.
Therefore wait(MW) for me,”
    declares the Lord,
    “for the day I will stand up to testify.[ab]
I have decided to assemble(MX) the nations,(MY)
    to gather the kingdoms
and to pour out my wrath(MZ) on them—
    all my fierce anger.(NA)
The whole world will be consumed(NB)
    by the fire of my jealous anger.

    that all of them may call(NC) on the name of the Lord(ND)
    and serve(NE) him shoulder to shoulder.
10 From beyond the rivers of Cush[ac](NF)
    my worshipers, my scattered people,
    will bring me offerings.(NG)
11 On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame(NH)
    for all the wrongs you have done to me,(NI)
because I will remove from you
    your arrogant boasters.(NJ)
Never again will you be haughty
    on my holy hill.(NK)
12 But I will leave within you
    the meek(NL) and humble.
The remnant of Israel

13 They(NN) will do no wrong;(NO)

    shout aloud,(NU) Israel!
Be glad and rejoice(NV) with all your heart,
    Daughter Jerusalem!
15 The Lord has taken away your punishment,

The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you;(NW)
    never again will you fear(NX) any harm.(NY)
16 On that day

17 The Lord your God is with you,
    the Mighty Warrior who saves.(OA)
He will take great delight(OB) in you;
    in his love he will no longer rebuke you,(OC)
    but will rejoice over you with singing.”(OD)

18 “I will remove from you
    all who mourn over the loss of your appointed festivals,
    which is a burden and reproach for you.
19 At that time I will deal
    with all who oppressed(OE) you.
I will rescue the lame;
    I will gather the exiles.(OF)
I will give them praise(OG) and honor
    in every land where they have suffered shame.
20 At that time I will gather you;
    at that time I will bring(OH) you home.
I will give you honor(OI) and praise(OJ)

    before your very eyes,”
