The Passover with the Disciples

17 (A)Now on (B)the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, (C)‘The Teacher says, (D)My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 (E)When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.[a] 21 And as they were eating, (F)he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, (G)“He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes (H)as it is written of him, but (I)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (J)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, (K)Rabbi?” He said to him, (L)“You have said so.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

26 (M)Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and (N)after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; (O)this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he (P)had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for (Q)this is my (R)blood of the[b] covenant, which is poured out for (S)many (T)for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you (U)in my Father's kingdom.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

30 (V)And when they had sung a hymn, (W)they went out to (X)the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will (Y)strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I am raised up, (Z)I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 (AA)Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 (AB)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, (AC)before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 (AD)Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 (AE)Then Jesus went with them (AF)to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him (AG)Peter and (AH)the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, (AI)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and (AJ)watch[c] with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face (AK)and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let (AL)this cup pass from me; (AM)nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 (AN)Watch and (AO)pray that you (AP)may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, (AQ)your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for (AR)their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for (AS)the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.[d] See, (AT)the hour is at hand, and (AU)the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (AV)While he was still speaking, (AW)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, (AX)Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, (AY)“Friend, (AZ)do what you came to do.”[e] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his (BA)sword and struck the servant[f] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For (BB)all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 (BC)Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me (BD)more than twelve (BE)legions of angels? 54 (BF)But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” 55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day (BG)I sat in the temple (BH)teaching, and you did not seize me. 56 But (BI)all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” (BJ)Then all the disciples left him and fled.

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council

57 (BK)Then (BL)those who had seized Jesus led him to (BM)Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58 And (BN)Peter was following him at a distance, as far as (BO)the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with (BP)the guards to see the end. 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council[g] (BQ)were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, 60 but they found none, (BR)though many false witnesses came forward. At last (BS)two came forward 61 and said, “This man said, (BT)‘I am able to (BU)destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” 62 And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[h] 63 (BV)But Jesus remained silent. (BW)And the high priest said to him, (BX)“I adjure you by (BY)the living God, (BZ)tell us if you are (CA)the Christ, (CB)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, (CC)“You have said so. But I tell you, from now on (CD)you will see the Son of Man (CE)seated at the right hand of Power and (CF)coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest (CG)tore his robes and said, (CH)“He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, (CI)“He deserves death.” 67 Then (CJ)they spit in his face (CK)and (CL)struck him. And some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you (CM)Christ! Who is it that struck you?”

Peter Denies Jesus

69 (CN)Now Peter was sitting outside (CO)in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” 71 And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus (CP)of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for (CQ)your accent betrays you.” 74 Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, (CR)“Before the rooster crows, you will (CS)deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

The Passover with the Disciples

12 (A)And on (B)the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they (C)sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13 And he sent (D)two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, (E)‘The Teacher says, Where is (F)my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 And he will show you (G)a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” 16 And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

17 (H)And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, (I)Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, (J)one who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20 He said to them, “It is (K)one of the twelve, (L)one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes (M)as it is written of him, but (N)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (O)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

22 (P)And as they were eating, he took bread, and after (Q)blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; (R)this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, and when he had (S)given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, (T)“This is my (U)blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for (V)many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

26 (W)And when they had sung a hymn, (X)they went out to (Y)the Mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will (Z)strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised up, (AA)I will go before you to Galilee.” 29 (AB)Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” 30 And (AC)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before (AD)the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31 But (AE)he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

32 (AF)And they went (AG)to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took with him (AH)Peter and James and John, and began (AI)to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, (AJ)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and (AK)watch.”[b] 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground (AL)and prayed that, if it were possible, (AM)the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, (AN)“Abba, Father, (AO)all things are possible for you. Remove (AP)this cup from me. (AQ)Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37 And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 (AR)Watch and (AS)pray that you may not (AT)enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again he went away and prayed, (AU)saying the same words. 40 And again he came and found them sleeping, for (AV)their eyes were very heavy, and (AW)they did not know what to answer him. 41 And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? (AX)It is enough; (AY)the hour has come. (AZ)The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 (BA)And immediately, while he was still speaking, (BB)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, (BC)“Rabbi!” And he (BD)kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his (BE)sword and struck the servant[c] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 (BF)Day after day I was with you in the temple (BG)teaching, and you did not seize me. But (BH)let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 (BI)And they all left him and fled.

A Young Man Flees

51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but (BJ)a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

Jesus Before the Council

53 (BK)And (BL)they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 (BM)And (BN)Peter had followed him at a distance, (BO)right into (BP)the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with (BQ)the guards and (BR)warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council[d] were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 (BS)For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony (BT)did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 (BU)“We heard him say, (BV)‘I will destroy this temple (BW)that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, (BX)not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[e] 61 But (BY)he remained silent and made no answer. (BZ)Again the high priest asked him, “Are you (CA)the Christ, the Son of (CB)the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and (CC)you will see the Son of Man (CD)seated at the right hand of Power, and (CE)coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest (CF)tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard (CG)his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they (CH)all condemned him as (CI)deserving death. 65 (CJ)And some began (CK)to spit on him and (CL)to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him (CM)with blows.

Peter Denies Jesus

66 (CN)And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter (CO)warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway[f] and (CP)the rooster crowed.[g] 69 And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71 But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” 72 And immediately the rooster crowed (CQ)a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, (CR)“Before the rooster crows twice, you will (CS)deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.[h]

The Passover with the Disciples

(A)Then came (B)the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus[a] sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, (C)‘The Teacher says to you, Where is (D)the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you (E)a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And they went and found it (F)just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Institution of the Lord's Supper

14 (G)And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it[b] (H)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and (I)when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 (J)For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine (K)until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 (L)And he took bread, and (M)when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, (N)“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, (O)“This cup that is poured out for you is (P)the new (Q)covenant in my blood.[c] 21 (R)But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is (S)with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes (T)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

Who Is the Greatest?

24 (U)A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 (V)And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles (W)exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 (X)But not so with you. Rather, let (Y)the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, (Z)one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But (AA)I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are those who have stayed with me (AB)in my trials, 29 and (AC)I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 (AD)that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and (AE)sit on thrones judging (AF)the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (AG)Satan demanded to have you,[d] (AH)that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but (AI)I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, (AJ)strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter[e] said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both (AK)to prison and (AL)to death.” 34 (AM)Jesus[f] said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

35 And he said to them, (AN)“When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that (AO)this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: (AP)‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For (AQ)what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two (AR)swords.” And he said to them, (AS)“It is enough.”

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 (AT)And he came out and went, (AU)as was his custom, to (AV)the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 (AW)And when he came to (AX)the place, he said to them, (AY)“Pray that you may not (AZ)enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and (BA)knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, (BB)“Father, if you are willing, remove (BC)this cup from me. (BD)Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him (BE)an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And (BF)being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.[g] 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and (BG)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (BH)While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called (BI)Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike (BJ)with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant[h] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (BK)officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When (BL)I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is (BM)your hour, and (BN)the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus

54 (BO)Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, (BP)and Peter was following at a distance. 55 (BQ)And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of (BR)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another (BS)insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and (BT)looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, (BU)“Before the rooster crows today, you will (BV)deny me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Is Mocked

63 (BW)Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. 64 (BX)They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, (BY)“Prophesy! (BZ)Who is it that struck you?” 65 And they said many other things against him, (CA)blaspheming him.

Jesus Before the Council

66 (CB)When day came, (CC)the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their (CD)council, and they (CE)said, 67 (CF)“If you are (CG)the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated (CH)at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 So they all said, “Are you (CI)the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, (CJ)“You say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

13 Now (A)before (B)the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that (C)his hour had come (D)to depart out of this world to the Father, (E)having loved (F)his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when (G)the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing (H)that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that (I)he had come from God and (J)was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, (K)tied it around his waist. Then he (L)poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” (M)Jesus answered him, “What I am doing (N)you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” (O)Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, (P)“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, (Q)except for his feet,[a] but is completely clean. And (R)you[b] are clean, (S)but not every one of you.” 11 (T)For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 When he had washed their feet and (U)put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, (V)“Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 (W)You call me (X)Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, (Y)you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, (Z)that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, (AA)a servant[c] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, (AB)blessed are you if you do them. 18 (AC)I am not speaking of all of you; I know (AD)whom I have chosen. But (AE)the Scripture will be fulfilled,[d] (AF)‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 (AG)I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, (AH)whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

One of You Will Betray Me

21 After saying these things, (AI)Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, (AJ)“Truly, truly, I say to you, (AK)one of you will betray me.” 22 (AL)The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 (AM)One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table (AN)at Jesus' side,[e] 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus[f] of whom he was speaking. 25 (AO)So that disciple, (AP)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, (AQ)“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread (AR)when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, (AS)he gave it to Judas, (AT)the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, (AU)Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, (AV)“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, (AW)because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need (AX)for the feast,” or that he should (AY)give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. (AZ)And it was night.

A New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, (BA)“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and (BB)God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, (BC)God will also glorify him in himself, and (BD)glorify him at once. 33 Little children, (BE)yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just (BF)as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 (BG)A new commandment (BH)I give to you, (BI)that you love one another: (BJ)just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 (BK)By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” (BL)Jesus answered him, “Where I am going (BM)you cannot follow me now, (BN)but you will follow afterward.” 37 (BO)Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, (BP)the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 (BQ)“Let not your hearts be troubled. (BR)Believe in God;[g] believe also in me. In (BS)my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that (BT)I go to prepare a place for you?[h] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you (BU)to myself, that (BV)where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[i] (BW)Thomas said to him, “Lord, (BX)we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am (BY)the way, and (BZ)the truth, and (CA)the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (CB)If you had known me, you would have (CC)known my Father also.[j] From now on you do know him and (CD)have seen him.”

(CE)Philip said to him, “Lord, (CF)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? (CG)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (CH)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you (CI)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that (CJ)I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else (CK)believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (CL)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I (CM)am going to the Father. 13 (CN)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that (CO)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 (CP)If you ask me[k] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (CQ)“If you love me, you will (CR)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (CS)Helper,[l] to be with you forever, 17 even (CT)the Spirit of truth, (CU)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (CV)will be[m] in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (CW)I will come to you. 19 (CX)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but (CY)you will see me. (CZ)Because I live, you also will live. 20 (DA)In that day you will know that (DB)I am in my Father, and (DC)you in me, and (DD)I in you. 21 (DE)Whoever has my commandments and (DF)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And (DG)he who loves me (DH)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and (DI)manifest myself to him.” 22 (DJ)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it (DK)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, (DL)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and (DM)we will come to him and (DN)make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And (DO)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the (DP)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (DQ)whom the Father will send in my name, (DR)he will teach you all things and (DS)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (DT)Peace I leave with you; (DU)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. (DV)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (DW)let them be afraid.
