The Triumphal Entry

21 (A)Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to (B)the Mount of Olives, then Jesus (C)sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place (D)to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

(E)“Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your king is coming to you,
(F)humble, and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt,[a] the foal of a beast of burden.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd (G)spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, (H)“Hosanna to (I)the Son of David! (J)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna (K)in the highest!” 10 And (L)when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is (M)the prophet Jesus, (N)from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

12 (O)And Jesus entered the temple[b] and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of (P)the money-changers and the seats of those who sold (Q)pigeons. 13 He said to them, “It is written, (R)‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but (S)you make it a den of robbers.”

14 (T)And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. 15 (U)But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, (V)“Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, 16 and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; (W)have you never read,

(X)“‘Out of the mouth of (Y)infants and nursing babies
    you have prepared praise’?”

17 And (Z)leaving them, he (AA)went out of the city to (AB)Bethany and lodged there.

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

18 (AC)In the morning, as he was returning to the city, (AD)he became hungry. 19 (AE)And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.

20 When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?” 21 And Jesus answered them, (AF)“Truly, I say to you, (AG)if you have faith and (AH)do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, (AI)‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. 22 And (AJ)whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, (AK)if you have faith.”

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

23 (AL)And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him (AM)as he was teaching, and said, (AN)“By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, (AO)from where did it come? (AP)From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, (AQ)‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man,’ (AR)we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was (AS)a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 (AT)“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in (AU)the vineyard today.’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he (AV)changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, (AW)the tax collectors and (AX)the prostitutes go into (AY)the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you (AZ)in the way of righteousness, and (BA)you did not believe him, but (BB)the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward (BC)change your minds and believe him.

The Parable of the Tenants

33 (BD)“Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted (BE)a vineyard (BF)and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and (BG)leased it to tenants, and (BH)went into another country. 34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants[c] to the tenants (BI)to get his fruit. 35 (BJ)And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and (BK)stoned another. 36 (BL)Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, (BM)‘This is the heir. Come, (BN)let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39 And they took him and (BO)threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 (BP)When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 They said to him, (BQ)“He will put those wretches to a miserable death and (BR)let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”

42 Jesus said to them, (BS)“Have you never read in the Scriptures:

(BT)“‘The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;[d]
this was the Lord's doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God (BU)will be taken away from you and given to a people (BV)producing its fruits. 44 And (BW)the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and (BX)when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”[e]

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46 And (BY)although they were seeking to arrest him, (BZ)they feared the crowds, because they held him to be (CA)a prophet.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(A)(B)

21 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives,(C) Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill(D) what was spoken through the prophet:

“Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”[a](E)

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks(F) on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna[b] to the Son of David!”(G)

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[c](H)

“Hosanna[d] in the highest heaven!”(I)

10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet(J) from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Jesus at the Temple(K)

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying(L) and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers(M) and the benches of those selling doves.(N) 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[e](O) but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’[f](P)

14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them.(Q) 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,”(R) they were indignant.(S)

16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.

“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,

“‘From the lips of children and infants
you, Lord, have called forth your praise’[g]?”(T)

17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany,(U) where he spent the night.

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree(V)

18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.(W)

20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.

21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt,(X) not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for(Y) in prayer.”

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(Z)

23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority(AA) are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”

24 Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”(AB)

27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’(AC)

29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.

31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”

“The first,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors(AD) and the prostitutes(AE) are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness,(AF) and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors(AG) and the prostitutes(AH) did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent(AI) and believe him.

The Parable of the Tenants(AJ)

33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted(AK) a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower.(AL) Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place.(AM) 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants(AN) to the tenants to collect his fruit.

35 “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.(AO) 36 Then he sent other servants(AP) to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.

38 “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir.(AQ) Come, let’s kill him(AR) and take his inheritance.’(AS) 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”

41 “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,”(AT) they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants,(AU) who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’[h]?(AV)

43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you(AW) and given to a people who will produce its fruit. 44 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”[i](AX)

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them. 46 They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.(AY)

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 Then Jesus (A)said to the crowds and to his disciples, (B)“The scribes and the Pharisees (C)sit on Moses' seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, (D)but not the works they do. (E)For they preach, but do not practice. (F)They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,[a] and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. (G)They do all their deeds (H)to be seen by others. For they make (I)their phylacteries broad and (J)their fringes long, and they (K)love the place of honor at feasts and (L)the best seats in the synagogues and (M)greetings in (N)the marketplaces and being called (O)rabbi[b] by others. (P)But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are (Q)all brothers.[c] (R)And call no man your father on earth, for (S)you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, (T)the Christ. 11 (U)The greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 (V)Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

13 “But woe (W)to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you (X)shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you (Y)neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.[d] 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single (Z)proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a (AA)child of (AB)hell[e] as yourselves.

16 “Woe to (AC)you, (AD)blind guides, who say, (AE)‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or (AF)the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by (AG)the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or (AH)the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by (AI)him who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by (AJ)heaven swears by (AK)the throne of God and by (AL)him who sits upon it.

23 (AM)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (AN)you tithe mint and dill and (AO)cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: (AP)justice and mercy and faithfulness. (AQ)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing (AR)a camel!

25 (AS)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (AT)you clean the outside of (AU)the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of (AV)greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of (AW)the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 (AX)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like (AY)whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and (AZ)all uncleanness. 28 So you also (BA)outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of (BB)hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 (BC)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are (BD)sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 (BE)Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, (BF)you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to (BG)hell? 34 (BH)Therefore (BI)I send you (BJ)prophets and wise men and (BK)scribes, (BL)some of whom you will kill and crucify, and (BM)some you will (BN)flog in your synagogues and (BO)persecute from town to town, 35 so that on you may come all (BP)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous (BQ)Abel to the blood of (BR)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,[f] whom you murdered between (BS)the sanctuary and (BT)the altar. 36 Truly, I say to you, (BU)all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

37 (BV)“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that (BW)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have (BX)gathered (BY)your children together (BZ)as a hen gathers her brood (CA)under her wings, and (CB)you were not willing! 38 See, (CC)your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, (CD)‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

24 (CE)Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, (CF)there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

As he sat on (CG)the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him (CH)privately, saying, “Tell us, (CI)when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your (CJ)coming and of (CK)the end of the age?” And Jesus answered them, (CL)“See that no one leads you astray. For (CM)many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am (CN)the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you (CO)are not alarmed, for this (CP)must take place, but the end is not yet. For (CQ)nation will rise against nation, and (CR)kingdom against kingdom, and there will be (CS)famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of (CT)the birth pains.

“Then (CU)they will deliver you up (CV)to tribulation and (CW)put you to death, and (CX)you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. 10 And then many will fall away[g] and (CY)betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many (CZ)false prophets will arise (DA)and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, (DB)the love of many will grow cold. 13 (DC)But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom (DD)will be proclaimed throughout the whole world (DE)as a testimony (DF)to all nations, and (DG)then the end will come.

The Abomination of Desolation

15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation (DH)spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in (DI)the holy place ((DJ)let the reader understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 (DK)Let the one who is on (DL)the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19 And (DM)alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be (DN)great tribulation, (DO)such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for (DP)the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. 23 (DQ)Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For (DR)false christs and (DS)false prophets will arise and (DT)perform great signs and wonders, (DU)so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, (DV)I have told you beforehand. 26 So, if they say to you, ‘Look, (DW)he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 (DX)For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be (DY)the coming of the Son of Man. 28 (DZ)Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man

29 “Immediately after (EA)the tribulation of those days (EB)the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and (EC)the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then (ED)will appear in heaven (EE)the sign of the Son of Man, and then (EF)all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and (EG)they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven (EH)with power and great glory. 31 And (EI)he will send out his angels with a loud (EJ)trumpet call, and they will (EK)gather (EL)his elect from (EM)the four winds, (EN)from one end of heaven to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

32 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, (EO)at the very gates. 34 (EP)Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 (EQ)Heaven and earth will pass away, but (ER)my words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

36 “But concerning that day and hour (ES)no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, (ET)nor the Son,[h] (EU)but the Father only. 37 (EV)For as were the days of Noah, (EW)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 (EX)For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, (EY)marrying and giving in marriage, until (EZ)the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, (FA)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 (FB)Two women will be grinding (FC)at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42 Therefore, (FD)stay awake, for you do not know on what day (FE)your Lord is coming. 43 (FF)But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night (FG)the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be (FH)ready, for (FI)the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

45 “Who then is (FJ)the faithful and (FK)wise servant,[i] whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? 46 (FL)Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 47 Truly, I say to you, (FM)he will set him over all his possessions. 48 But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master (FN)is delayed,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants[j] and eats and drinks with (FO)drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come (FP)on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know 51 and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place (FQ)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like (FR)ten virgins who took their lamps[k] and went to meet (FS)the bridegroom.[l] Five of them were foolish, and five were (FT)wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom (FU)was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But (FV)at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and (FW)trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and (FX)those who were ready went in with him to (FY)the marriage feast, and (FZ)the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, (GA)‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 (GB)But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, (GC)I do not know you.’ 13 (GD)Watch therefore, for you (GE)know neither the day nor the hour.

The Parable of the Talents

14 (GF)“For (GG)it will be like a man (GH)going on a journey, who called his servants[m] and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five (GI)talents,[n] to another two, to another one, (GJ)to each according to his ability. Then he (GK)went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and (GL)dug in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 Now (GM)after a long time the master of those servants came and (GN)settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and (GO)faithful servant.[o] (GP)You have been faithful over a little; (GQ)I will set you over much. Enter into (GR)the joy of your master.’ 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be (GS)a hard man, reaping (GT)where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, (GU)you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered him, ‘You (GV)wicked and (GW)slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 (GX)For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And (GY)cast (GZ)the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place (HA)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

The Final Judgment

31 (HB)“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, (HC)then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him (HD)will be gathered (HE)all the nations, and (HF)he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates (HG)the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then (HH)the King will say to (HI)those on his right, ‘Come, you (HJ)who are blessed by my Father, (HK)inherit (HL)the kingdom (HM)prepared for you (HN)from the foundation of the world. 35 For (HO)I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you (HP)gave me drink, (HQ)I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 (HR)I was naked and you clothed me, (HS)I was sick and you (HT)visited me, (HU)I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And (HV)the King will answer them, (HW)‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these (HX)my brothers,[p] you did it to me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, (HY)‘Depart from me, you (HZ)cursed, into (IA)the eternal fire prepared for (IB)the devil and his angels. 42 For (IC)I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, (ID)you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away (IE)into eternal punishment, but the righteous (IF)into (IG)eternal life.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

26 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, (IH)“You know that after two days (II)the Passover is coming, and (IJ)the Son of Man (IK)will be delivered up to be crucified.”

(IL)Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in (IM)the palace of the high priest, whose name was (IN)Caiaphas, (IO)and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. But they said, “Not during the feast, (IP)lest there be an uproar among the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

(IQ)Now when Jesus was at (IR)Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,[q] a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this could have been sold for a large sum and (IS)given to the poor.” 10 But (IT)Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 For (IU)you always have the poor with you, but (IV)you will not always have me. 12 In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it (IW)to prepare me for burial. 13 Truly, I say to you, wherever (IX)this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told (IY)in memory of her.”

Judas to Betray Jesus

14 (IZ)Then one of the twelve, whose name was (JA)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they (JB)paid him (JC)thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity (JD)to betray him.

The Passover with the Disciples

17 (JE)Now on (JF)the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, (JG)‘The Teacher says, (JH)My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 (JI)When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.[r] 21 And as they were eating, (JJ)he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, (JK)“He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes (JL)as it is written of him, but (JM)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (JN)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, (JO)Rabbi?” He said to him, (JP)“You have said so.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

26 (JQ)Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and (JR)after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; (JS)this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he (JT)had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for (JU)this is my (JV)blood of the[s] covenant, which is poured out for (JW)many (JX)for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you (JY)in my Father's kingdom.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

30 (JZ)And when they had sung a hymn, (KA)they went out to (KB)the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will (KC)strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I am raised up, (KD)I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 (KE)Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 (KF)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, (KG)before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 (KH)Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 (KI)Then Jesus went with them (KJ)to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him (KK)Peter and (KL)the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, (KM)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and (KN)watch[t] with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face (KO)and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let (KP)this cup pass from me; (KQ)nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 (KR)Watch and (KS)pray that you (KT)may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, (KU)your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for (KV)their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for (KW)the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.[u] See, (KX)the hour is at hand, and (KY)the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (KZ)While he was still speaking, (LA)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, (LB)Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, (LC)“Friend, (LD)do what you came to do.”[v] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his (LE)sword and struck the servant[w] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For (LF)all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 (LG)Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me (LH)more than twelve (LI)legions of angels? 54 (LJ)But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” 55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day (LK)I sat in the temple (LL)teaching, and you did not seize me. 56 But (LM)all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” (LN)Then all the disciples left him and fled.

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council

57 (LO)Then (LP)those who had seized Jesus led him to (LQ)Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58 And (LR)Peter was following him at a distance, as far as (LS)the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with (LT)the guards to see the end. 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council[x] (LU)were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, 60 but they found none, (LV)though many false witnesses came forward. At last (LW)two came forward 61 and said, “This man said, (LX)‘I am able to (LY)destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” 62 And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[y] 63 (LZ)But Jesus remained silent. (MA)And the high priest said to him, (MB)“I adjure you by (MC)the living God, (MD)tell us if you are (ME)the Christ, (MF)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, (MG)“You have said so. But I tell you, from now on (MH)you will see the Son of Man (MI)seated at the right hand of Power and (MJ)coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest (MK)tore his robes and said, (ML)“He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, (MM)“He deserves death.” 67 Then (MN)they spit in his face (MO)and (MP)struck him. And some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you (MQ)Christ! Who is it that struck you?”

Peter Denies Jesus

69 (MR)Now Peter was sitting outside (MS)in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.”

A Warning Against Hypocrisy(A)(B)

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law(C) and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.(D)

“Everything they do is done for people to see:(E) They make their phylacteries[a](F) wide and the tassels on their garments(G) long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;(H) they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.(I)

“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father,(J) and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(K) 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.(L)

Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees

13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!(M) You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.(N) [14] [b]

15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert,(O) and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell(P) as you are.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides!(Q) You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’(R) 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?(S) 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?(T) 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells(U) in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.(V)

23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth(W) of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.(X) You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides!(Y) You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish,(Z) but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.(AA) 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,(AB) which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets(AC) and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.(AD) 32 Go ahead, then, and complete(AE) what your ancestors started!(AF)

33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers!(AG) How will you escape being condemned to hell?(AH) 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify;(AI) others you will flog in your synagogues(AJ) and pursue from town to town.(AK) 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel(AL) to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah,(AM) whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.(AN) 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.(AO)

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,(AP) how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(AQ) and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(AR) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[c](AS)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(AT)

24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another;(AU) every one will be thrown down.”

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,(AV) the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming(AW) and of the end of the age?”(AX)

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(AY) For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.(AZ) You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(BA) There will be famines(BB) and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted(BC) and put to death,(BD) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.(BE) 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets(BF) will appear and deceive many people.(BG) 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(BH) 14 And this gospel of the kingdom(BI) will be preached in the whole world(BJ) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

15 “So when you see standing in the holy place(BK) ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’[d](BL) spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the housetop(BM) go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(BN) 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.(BO)

22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect(BP) those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.(BQ) 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders(BR) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.

26 “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as lightning(BS) that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming(BT) of the Son of Man.(BU) 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.(BV)

29 “Immediately after the distress of those days

“‘the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[e](BW)

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[f] will mourn(BX) when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven,(BY) with power and great glory.[g] 31 And he will send his angels(BZ) with a loud trumpet call,(CA) and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it[h] is near, right at the door.(CB) 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(CC) 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(CD)

The Day and Hour Unknown(CE)(CF)

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[i] but only the Father.(CG) 37 As it was in the days of Noah,(CH) so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,(CI) up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.(CJ) 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.(CK) 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.(CL)

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.(CM) 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,(CN) he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready,(CO) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant,(CP) whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.(CQ) 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.(CR) 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.(CS) 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(CT)

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like(CU) ten virgins who took their lamps(CV) and went out to meet the bridegroom.(CW) Five of them were foolish and five were wise.(CX) The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.(CY)

“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

“Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’(CZ)

“‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet.(DA) And the door was shut.

11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’

12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’(DB)

13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.(DC)

The Parable of the Bags of Gold(DD)

14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey,(DE) who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[j] each according to his ability.(DF) Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.(DG) 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’

21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(DH) Come and share your master’s happiness!’

22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(DI) Come and share your master’s happiness!’

24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(DJ) 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’(DK)

The Sheep and the Goats

31 “When the Son of Man comes(DL) in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.(DM) 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate(DN) the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.(DO) 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom(DP) prepared for you since the creation of the world.(DQ) 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,(DR) 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me,(DS) I was sick and you looked after me,(DT) I was in prison and you came to visit me.’(DU)

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’(DV)

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me,(DW) you who are cursed, into the eternal fire(DX) prepared for the devil and his angels.(DY) 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’(DZ)

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.(EA)(EB)

The Plot Against Jesus(EC)

26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things,(ED) he said to his disciples, “As you know, the Passover(EE) is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled(EF) in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,(EG) and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(EH) “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot(EI) among the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(EJ)(EK)

While Jesus was in Bethany(EL) in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.

When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”

10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you,[k](EM) but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.(EN) 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(EO)

14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot(EP)—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.(EQ) 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

The Last Supper(ER)(ES)(ET)

17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(EU) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”(EV)

18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time(EW) is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”(EX)

22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”

23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.(EY) 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.(EZ) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him,(FA) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”(FB)

Jesus answered, “You have said so.”

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(FC) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

27 Then he took a cup,(FD) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[l] covenant,(FE) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.(FF) 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you(FG) in my Father’s kingdom.”

30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(FH)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(FI)

31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(FJ) for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[m](FK)

32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(FL)

33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(FM)

35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(FN) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

Gethsemane(FO)

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(FP) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(FQ) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(FR)

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(FS) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(FT)

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(FU) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(FV) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(FW)

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(FX) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(FY)

47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(FZ) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(GA) and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[n](GB)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(GC) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(GD)

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(GE) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(GF) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(GG) that say it must happen in this way?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(GH) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(GI) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(GJ)

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(GK) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(GL) He entered and sat down with the guards(GM) to see the outcome.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(GN) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(GO) came forward.

Finally two(GP) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(GQ)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(GR)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(GS) by the living God:(GT) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(GU) the Son of God.”(GV)

64 “You have said so,”(GW) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(GX) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[o](GY)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(GZ) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”(HA) they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(HB) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(HC)
