20 When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?” 21 And Jesus answered them, (A)“Truly, I say to you, (B)if you have faith and (C)do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, (D)‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. 22 And (E)whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, (F)if you have faith.”

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

23 (G)And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him (H)as he was teaching, and said, (I)“By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, (J)from where did it come? (K)From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, (L)‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man,’ (M)we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was (N)a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 (O)“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in (P)the vineyard today.’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he (Q)changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, (R)the tax collectors and (S)the prostitutes go into (T)the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you (U)in the way of righteousness, and (V)you did not believe him, but (W)the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward (X)change your minds and believe him.

The Parable of the Tenants

33 (Y)“Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted (Z)a vineyard (AA)and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and (AB)leased it to tenants, and (AC)went into another country. 34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants[a] to the tenants (AD)to get his fruit. 35 (AE)And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and (AF)stoned another. 36 (AG)Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, (AH)‘This is the heir. Come, (AI)let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39 And they took him and (AJ)threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 (AK)When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 They said to him, (AL)“He will put those wretches to a miserable death and (AM)let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”

42 Jesus said to them, (AN)“Have you never read in the Scriptures:

(AO)“‘The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;[b]
this was the Lord's doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God (AP)will be taken away from you and given to a people (AQ)producing its fruits. 44 And (AR)the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and (AS)when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”[c]

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46 And (AT)although they were seeking to arrest him, (AU)they feared the crowds, because they held him to be (AV)a prophet.

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

22 And again Jesus (AW)spoke to them in parables, saying, (AX)“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave (AY)a wedding feast for his son, and (AZ)sent his servants[d] to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. (BA)Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my (BB)dinner, (BC)my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ But (BD)they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, (BE)treated them shamefully, and (BF)killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and (BG)destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not (BH)worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10 And those servants went out into the roads and (BI)gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there (BJ)a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, (BK)‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and (BL)cast him into the outer darkness. In that place (BM)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are (BN)called, but few are (BO)chosen.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

15 (BP)Then the Pharisees went and plotted how (BQ)to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent (BR)their disciples to him, along with (BS)the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, (BT)we know that you are true and teach (BU)the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for (BV)you are not swayed by appearances.[e] 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay (BW)taxes to (BX)Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why (BY)put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.[f] 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, (BZ)“Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they (CA)left him and went away.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

23 The same day (CB)Sadducees came to him, (CC)who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, (CD)‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. 26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27 After them all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, (CE)because you know neither the Scriptures nor (CF)the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither (CG)marry nor (CH)are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, (CI)have you not read what was said to you by God: 32 (CJ)‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the crowd heard it, (CK)they were astonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

34 (CL)But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced (CM)the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 (CN)And one of them, (CO)a lawyer, asked him a question (CP)to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, (CQ)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And (CR)a second is like it: (CS)You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 (CT)On these two commandments depend (CU)all the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 (CV)Now while the Pharisees (CW)were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about (CX)the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, (CY)“The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, (CZ)in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

44 (DA)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

45 If then David calls him Lord, (DB)how is he his son?” 46 (DC)And no one was able to answer him a word, (DD)nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 Then Jesus (DE)said to the crowds and to his disciples, (DF)“The scribes and the Pharisees (DG)sit on Moses' seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, (DH)but not the works they do. (DI)For they preach, but do not practice. (DJ)They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,[g] and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. (DK)They do all their deeds (DL)to be seen by others. For they make (DM)their phylacteries broad and (DN)their fringes long, and they (DO)love the place of honor at feasts and (DP)the best seats in the synagogues and (DQ)greetings in (DR)the marketplaces and being called (DS)rabbi[h] by others. (DT)But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are (DU)all brothers.[i] (DV)And call no man your father on earth, for (DW)you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, (DX)the Christ. 11 (DY)The greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 (DZ)Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

13 “But woe (EA)to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you (EB)shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you (EC)neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.[j] 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single (ED)proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a (EE)child of (EF)hell[k] as yourselves.

16 “Woe to (EG)you, (EH)blind guides, who say, (EI)‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or (EJ)the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by (EK)the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or (EL)the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by (EM)him who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by (EN)heaven swears by (EO)the throne of God and by (EP)him who sits upon it.

23 (EQ)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (ER)you tithe mint and dill and (ES)cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: (ET)justice and mercy and faithfulness. (EU)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing (EV)a camel!

25 (EW)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (EX)you clean the outside of (EY)the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of (EZ)greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of (FA)the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 (FB)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like (FC)whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and (FD)all uncleanness. 28 So you also (FE)outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of (FF)hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 (FG)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are (FH)sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 (FI)Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, (FJ)you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to (FK)hell? 34 (FL)Therefore (FM)I send you (FN)prophets and wise men and (FO)scribes, (FP)some of whom you will kill and crucify, and (FQ)some you will (FR)flog in your synagogues and (FS)persecute from town to town, 35 so that on you may come all (FT)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous (FU)Abel to the blood of (FV)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,[l] whom you murdered between (FW)the sanctuary and (FX)the altar. 36 Truly, I say to you, (FY)all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

37 (FZ)“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that (GA)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have (GB)gathered (GC)your children together (GD)as a hen gathers her brood (GE)under her wings, and (GF)you were not willing! 38 See, (GG)your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, (GH)‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

24 (GI)Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, (GJ)there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

As he sat on (GK)the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him (GL)privately, saying, “Tell us, (GM)when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your (GN)coming and of (GO)the end of the age?” And Jesus answered them, (GP)“See that no one leads you astray. For (GQ)many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am (GR)the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you (GS)are not alarmed, for this (GT)must take place, but the end is not yet. For (GU)nation will rise against nation, and (GV)kingdom against kingdom, and there will be (GW)famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of (GX)the birth pains.

“Then (GY)they will deliver you up (GZ)to tribulation and (HA)put you to death, and (HB)you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. 10 And then many will fall away[m] and (HC)betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many (HD)false prophets will arise (HE)and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, (HF)the love of many will grow cold. 13 (HG)But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom (HH)will be proclaimed throughout the whole world (HI)as a testimony (HJ)to all nations, and (HK)then the end will come.

The Abomination of Desolation

15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation (HL)spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in (HM)the holy place ((HN)let the reader understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 (HO)Let the one who is on (HP)the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19 And (HQ)alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be (HR)great tribulation, (HS)such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for (HT)the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. 23 (HU)Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For (HV)false christs and (HW)false prophets will arise and (HX)perform great signs and wonders, (HY)so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, (HZ)I have told you beforehand. 26 So, if they say to you, ‘Look, (IA)he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 (IB)For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be (IC)the coming of the Son of Man. 28 (ID)Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man

29 “Immediately after (IE)the tribulation of those days (IF)the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and (IG)the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then (IH)will appear in heaven (II)the sign of the Son of Man, and then (IJ)all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and (IK)they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven (IL)with power and great glory. 31 And (IM)he will send out his angels with a loud (IN)trumpet call, and they will (IO)gather (IP)his elect from (IQ)the four winds, (IR)from one end of heaven to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

32 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, (IS)at the very gates. 34 (IT)Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 (IU)Heaven and earth will pass away, but (IV)my words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

36 “But concerning that day and hour (IW)no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, (IX)nor the Son,[n] (IY)but the Father only. 37 (IZ)For as were the days of Noah, (JA)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 (JB)For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, (JC)marrying and giving in marriage, until (JD)the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, (JE)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 (JF)Two women will be grinding (JG)at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42 Therefore, (JH)stay awake, for you do not know on what day (JI)your Lord is coming. 43 (JJ)But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night (JK)the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be (JL)ready, for (JM)the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

45 “Who then is (JN)the faithful and (JO)wise servant,[o] whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? 46 (JP)Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 47 Truly, I say to you, (JQ)he will set him over all his possessions. 48 But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master (JR)is delayed,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants[p] and eats and drinks with (JS)drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come (JT)on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know 51 and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place (JU)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like (JV)ten virgins who took their lamps[q] and went to meet (JW)the bridegroom.[r] Five of them were foolish, and five were (JX)wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom (JY)was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But (JZ)at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and (KA)trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and (KB)those who were ready went in with him to (KC)the marriage feast, and (KD)the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, (KE)‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 (KF)But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, (KG)I do not know you.’ 13 (KH)Watch therefore, for you (KI)know neither the day nor the hour.

The Parable of the Talents

14 (KJ)“For (KK)it will be like a man (KL)going on a journey, who called his servants[s] and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five (KM)talents,[t] to another two, to another one, (KN)to each according to his ability. Then he (KO)went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and (KP)dug in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 Now (KQ)after a long time the master of those servants came and (KR)settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and (KS)faithful servant.[u] (KT)You have been faithful over a little; (KU)I will set you over much. Enter into (KV)the joy of your master.’ 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be (KW)a hard man, reaping (KX)where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, (KY)you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered him, ‘You (KZ)wicked and (LA)slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 (LB)For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And (LC)cast (LD)the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place (LE)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

The Final Judgment

31 (LF)“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, (LG)then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him (LH)will be gathered (LI)all the nations, and (LJ)he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates (LK)the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then (LL)the King will say to (LM)those on his right, ‘Come, you (LN)who are blessed by my Father, (LO)inherit (LP)the kingdom (LQ)prepared for you (LR)from the foundation of the world. 35 For (LS)I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you (LT)gave me drink, (LU)I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 (LV)I was naked and you clothed me, (LW)I was sick and you (LX)visited me, (LY)I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And (LZ)the King will answer them, (MA)‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these (MB)my brothers,[v] you did it to me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, (MC)‘Depart from me, you (MD)cursed, into (ME)the eternal fire prepared for (MF)the devil and his angels. 42 For (MG)I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, (MH)you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away (MI)into eternal punishment, but the righteous (MJ)into (MK)eternal life.”

20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.

21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt,(A) not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for(B) in prayer.”

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(C)

23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority(D) are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”

24 Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”(E)

27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’(F)

29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.

31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”

“The first,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors(G) and the prostitutes(H) are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness,(I) and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors(J) and the prostitutes(K) did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent(L) and believe him.

The Parable of the Tenants(M)

33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted(N) a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower.(O) Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place.(P) 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants(Q) to the tenants to collect his fruit.

35 “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.(R) 36 Then he sent other servants(S) to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.

38 “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir.(T) Come, let’s kill him(U) and take his inheritance.’(V) 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”

41 “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,”(W) they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants,(X) who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’[a]?(Y)

43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you(Z) and given to a people who will produce its fruit. 44 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”[b](AA)

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them. 46 They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.(AB)

The Parable of the Wedding Banquet(AC)

22 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like(AD) a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants(AE) to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

“Then he sent some more servants(AF) and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’

“But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers(AG) and burned their city.

“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. So go to the street corners(AH) and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good,(AI) and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend(AJ)?’ The man was speechless.

13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’(AK)

14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”(AL)

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar(AM)

15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians.(AN) “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax[c](AO) to Caesar or not?”

18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

21 “Caesar’s,” they replied.

Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(AP) and to God what is God’s.”

22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.(AQ)

Marriage at the Resurrection(AR)

23 That same day the Sadducees,(AS) who say there is no resurrection,(AT) came to him with a question. 24 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.(AU) 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27 Finally, the woman died. 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?”

29 Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures(AV) or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage;(AW) they will be like the angels in heaven. 31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’[d]?(AX) He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.(AY)

The Greatest Commandment(AZ)

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees,(BA) the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law,(BB) tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[e](BC) 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[f](BD) 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”(BE)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(BF)

41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”

“The son of David,”(BG) they replied.

43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,

44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.”’[g](BH)

45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.(BI)

A Warning Against Hypocrisy(BJ)(BK)

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law(BL) and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.(BM)

“Everything they do is done for people to see:(BN) They make their phylacteries[h](BO) wide and the tassels on their garments(BP) long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;(BQ) they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.(BR)

“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father,(BS) and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(BT) 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.(BU)

Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees

13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!(BV) You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.(BW) [14] [i]

15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert,(BX) and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell(BY) as you are.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides!(BZ) You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’(CA) 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?(CB) 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?(CC) 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells(CD) in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.(CE)

23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth(CF) of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.(CG) You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides!(CH) You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish,(CI) but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.(CJ) 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,(CK) which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets(CL) and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.(CM) 32 Go ahead, then, and complete(CN) what your ancestors started!(CO)

33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers!(CP) How will you escape being condemned to hell?(CQ) 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify;(CR) others you will flog in your synagogues(CS) and pursue from town to town.(CT) 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel(CU) to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah,(CV) whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.(CW) 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.(CX)

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,(CY) how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(CZ) and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(DA) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[j](DB)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(DC)

24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another;(DD) every one will be thrown down.”

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,(DE) the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming(DF) and of the end of the age?”(DG)

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(DH) For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.(DI) You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(DJ) There will be famines(DK) and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted(DL) and put to death,(DM) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.(DN) 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets(DO) will appear and deceive many people.(DP) 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(DQ) 14 And this gospel of the kingdom(DR) will be preached in the whole world(DS) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

15 “So when you see standing in the holy place(DT) ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’[k](DU) spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the housetop(DV) go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(DW) 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.(DX)

22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect(DY) those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.(DZ) 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders(EA) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.

26 “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as lightning(EB) that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming(EC) of the Son of Man.(ED) 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.(EE)

29 “Immediately after the distress of those days

“‘the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[l](EF)

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[m] will mourn(EG) when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven,(EH) with power and great glory.[n] 31 And he will send his angels(EI) with a loud trumpet call,(EJ) and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it[o] is near, right at the door.(EK) 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(EL) 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(EM)

The Day and Hour Unknown(EN)(EO)

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[p] but only the Father.(EP) 37 As it was in the days of Noah,(EQ) so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,(ER) up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.(ES) 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.(ET) 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.(EU)

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.(EV) 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,(EW) he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready,(EX) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant,(EY) whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.(EZ) 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.(FA) 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.(FB) 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(FC)

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like(FD) ten virgins who took their lamps(FE) and went out to meet the bridegroom.(FF) Five of them were foolish and five were wise.(FG) The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.(FH)

“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

“Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’(FI)

“‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet.(FJ) And the door was shut.

11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’

12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’(FK)

13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.(FL)

The Parable of the Bags of Gold(FM)

14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey,(FN) who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[q] each according to his ability.(FO) Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.(FP) 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’

21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(FQ) Come and share your master’s happiness!’

22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(FR) Come and share your master’s happiness!’

24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(FS) 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’(FT)

The Sheep and the Goats

31 “When the Son of Man comes(FU) in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.(FV) 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate(FW) the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.(FX) 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom(FY) prepared for you since the creation of the world.(FZ) 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,(GA) 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me,(GB) I was sick and you looked after me,(GC) I was in prison and you came to visit me.’(GD)

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’(GE)

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me,(GF) you who are cursed, into the eternal fire(GG) prepared for the devil and his angels.(GH) 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’(GI)

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.(GJ)(GK)
