Do Not Judge(A)
7 “Judge[a] (B)not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what [b]judgment you judge, you will be judged; (C)and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. 3 (D)And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
6 (E)“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.
Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking(F)
7 (G)“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For (H)everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 (I)Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If you then, (J)being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! 12 Therefore, (K)whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for (L)this is the Law and the Prophets.
The Narrow Way(M)
13 (N)“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 [c]Because narrow is the gate and [d]difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
You Will Know Them by Their Fruits(O)
15 (P)“Beware of false prophets, (Q)who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 (R)You will know them by their fruits. (S)Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, (T)every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 (U)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
I Never Knew You(V)
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, (W)‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who (X)does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we (Y)not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And (Z)then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; (AA)depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
Build on the Rock(AB)
24 “Therefore (AC)whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that (AD)the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 (AE)for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Jesus Cleanses a Leper(AF)
8 When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. 2 (AG)And behold, a leper came and (AH)worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
3 Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy (AI)was cleansed.
4 And Jesus said to him, (AJ)“See that you tell no one; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that (AK)Moses (AL)commanded, as a testimony to them.”
Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant(AM)
5 (AN)Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a (AO)centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, 6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.”
7 And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”
8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, (AP)I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only (AQ)speak a word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! 11 And I say to you that (AR)many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But (AS)the sons of the kingdom (AT)will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.
Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed(AU)
14 (AV)Now when Jesus had come into Peter’s house, He saw (AW)his wife’s mother lying sick with a fever. 15 So He touched her hand, and the fever left her. And she arose and served [e]them.
Many Healed in the Evening(AX)
16 (AY)When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:

And bore our sicknesses.”
The Cost of Discipleship(BA)
18 And when Jesus saw great multitudes about Him, He gave a command to depart to the other side. 19 (BB)Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.”
20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
21 (BC)Then another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, (BD)let me first go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Wind and Wave Obey Jesus(BE)
23 Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 (BF)And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. 25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then (BG)He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 So the men marveled, saying, [f]“Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
Two Demon-Possessed Men Healed(BH)
28 (BI)When He had come to the other side, to the country of the [g]Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”
30 Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine feeding. 31 So the demons begged Him, saying, “If You cast us out, [h]permit us to go away into the herd of swine.”
32 And He said to them, “Go.” So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and perished in the water.
33 Then those who kept them fled; and they went away into the city and told everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, (BJ)they begged Him to depart from their region.
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralytic(BK)
9 So He got into a boat, crossed over, (BL)and came to His own city. 2 (BM)Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. (BN)When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.”
3 And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, “This Man blasphemes!”
4 But Jesus, (BO)knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 7 And he arose and departed to his house.
8 Now when the multitudes saw it, they (BP)marveled[i] and glorified God, who had given such power to men.
Matthew the Tax Collector(BQ)
9 (BR)As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.
10 (BS)Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with (BT)tax collectors and (BU)sinners?”
12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: (BV)‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, (BW)but sinners, [j]to repentance.”
Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(BX)
14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, (BY)“Why do we and the Pharisees fast [k]often, but Your disciples do not fast?”
15 And Jesus said to them, “Can (BZ)the [l]friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and (CA)then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for [m]the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. 17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins [n]break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed(CB)
18 (CC)While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” 19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His (CD)disciples.
20 (CE)And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and (CF)touched the hem of His garment. 21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” 22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; (CG)your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.
23 (CH)When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw (CI)the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24 He said to them, (CJ)“Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and (CK)took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the (CL)report of this went out into all that land.
Two Blind Men Healed
27 When Jesus departed from there, (CM)two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, (CN)“Son of David, have mercy on us!”
28 And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”
29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, (CO)“See that no one knows it.” 31 (CP)But when they had departed, they [o]spread the news about Him in all that [p]country.
A Mute Man Speaks
32 (CQ)As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed. 33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, “It was never seen like this in Israel!”
34 But the Pharisees said, (CR)“He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.”
The Compassion of Jesus(CS)
35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, (CT)teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease [q]among the people. 36 (CU)But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were [r]weary and scattered, (CV)like sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, (CW)“The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 (CX)Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
The Twelve Apostles(CY)
10 And (CZ)when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, (DA)who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and [s]Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 (DB)Simon the [t]Cananite, and Judas (DC)Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.
Sending Out the Twelve(DD)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: (DE)“Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of (DF)the Samaritans. 6 (DG)But go rather to the (DH)lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 (DI)And as you go, preach, saying, (DJ)‘The kingdom of heaven [u]is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, [v]cleanse the lepers, [w]raise the dead, cast out demons. (DK)Freely you have received, freely give. 9 (DL)Provide neither gold nor silver nor (DM)copper in your money belts, 10 nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; (DN)for a worker is worthy of his food.
11 (DO)“Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out. 12 And when you go into a household, greet it. 13 (DP)If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. (DQ)But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 (DR)And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, (DS)shake off the dust from your feet. 15 Assuredly, I say to you, (DT)it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!
Persecutions Are Coming(DU)
16 (DV)“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. (DW)Therefore be wise as serpents and (DX)harmless[x] as doves. 17 But beware of men, for (DY)they will deliver you up to councils and (DZ)scourge you in their synagogues. 18 (EA)You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 (EB)But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For (EC)it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 (ED)for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
21 (EE)“Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22 And (EF)you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. (EG)But he who endures to the end will be saved. 23 (EH)When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have (EI)gone through the cities of Israel (EJ)before the Son of Man comes.
24 (EK)“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If (EL)they have called the master of the house [y]Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! 26 Therefore do not fear them. (EM)For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.
Jesus Teaches the Fear of God(EN)
27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, (EO)speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. 28 (EP)And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather (EQ)fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in [z]hell. 29 Are not two (ER)sparrows sold for a [aa]copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30 (ES)But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Confess Christ Before Men(ET)
32 (EU)“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, (EV)him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 (EW)But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
Christ Brings Division(EX)
34 (EY)“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to (EZ)‘set[ab] a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and (FA)‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 (FB)He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 (FC)And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 (FD)He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.
A Cup of Cold Water(FE)
40 (FF)“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. 41 (FG)He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 (FH)And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus(FI)
11 Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to (FJ)teach and to preach in their cities.
2 (FK)And when John had heard (FL)in prison about the works of Christ, he [ac]sent two of his disciples 3 and said to Him, “Are You (FM)the Coming One, or do we look for another?”
4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 (FN)The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and (FO)the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he who is not (FP)offended because of Me.”
7 (FQ)As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? (FR)A reed shaken by the wind? 8 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, (FS)and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he of whom it is written:
(FT)‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’
11 “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 (FU)And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 (FV)For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to receive it, he is (FW)Elijah who is to come. 15 (FX)He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
16 (FY)“But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, 17 and saying:
‘We played the flute for you,
And you did not dance;
We mourned to you,
And you did not [ad]lament.’
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a [ae]winebibber, (FZ)a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ (GA)But wisdom is justified by her [af]children.”
Woe to the Impenitent Cities(GB)
20 (GC)Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago (GD)in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you, (GE)it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, (GF)who[ag] are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say to you (GG)that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”
Jesus Gives True Rest(GH)
25 (GI)At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that (GJ)You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent (GK)and have revealed them to babes. 26 Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 27 (GL)All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. (GM)Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 Come to (GN)Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you (GO)and learn from Me, for I am [ah]gentle and (GP)lowly in heart, (GQ)and you will find rest for your souls. 30 (GR)For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(GS)
12 At that time (GT)Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, and began to (GU)pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!”
3 But He said to them, “Have you not read (GV)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate (GW)the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, (GX)but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the (GY)law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple [ai]profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? 6 Yet I say to you that in this place there is (GZ)One greater than the temple. 7 But if you had known what this means, (HA)‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord [aj]even of the Sabbath.”
Healing on the Sabbath(HB)
9 (HC)Now when He had departed from there, He went into their synagogue. 10 And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand. And they asked Him, saying, (HD)“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—that they might accuse Him.
11 Then He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? 12 Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” 13 Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other. 14 Then (HE)the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him.
Behold, My Servant
15 But when Jesus knew it, (HF)He withdrew from there. (HG)And great [ak]multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all. 16 Yet He (HH)warned them not to make Him known, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
18 “Behold!(HI) My Servant whom I have chosen,
My Beloved (HJ)in whom My soul is well pleased!
I will put My Spirit upon Him,
And He will declare justice to the Gentiles.
19 He will not quarrel nor cry out,
Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench,
Till He sends forth justice to victory;
21 And in His name Gentiles will trust.”
A House Divided Cannot Stand(HK)
22 (HL)Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the [al]blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the (HM)Son of David?”
24 (HN)Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by [am]Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”
25 But Jesus (HO)knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, (HP)surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 (HQ)Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. 30 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.
The Unpardonable Sin(HR)
31 “Therefore I say to you, (HS)every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, (HT)but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who (HU)speaks a word against the Son of Man, (HV)it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.
A Tree Known by Its Fruit(HW)
33 “Either make the tree good and (HX)its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 (HY)Brood[an] of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? (HZ)For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure [ao]of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
The Scribes and Pharisees Ask for a Sign(IA)
38 (IB)Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”

Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men(BB)
28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[c] two demon-possessed(BC) men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us,(BD) Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”(BE)
30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(BG)
9 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.(BH) 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man,(BI) lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,(BJ) he said to the man, “Take heart,(BK) son; your sins are forgiven.”(BL)

16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(CA)
18 While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him(CB) and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her,(CC) and she will live.” 19 Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.(CD) 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”
22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart,(CE) daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.”(CF) And the woman was healed at that moment.(CG)
23 When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,(CH) 24 he said, “Go away. Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”(CM)
28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
“Yes, Lord,” they replied.(CN)
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”;(CO) 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”(CP) 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.(CQ)
32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed(CR) and could not talk(CS) was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”(CT)

The Workers Are Few
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.(CV) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,(CW) because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.(CX) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest(CY) is plentiful but the workers are few.(CZ) 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(DF) and to heal every disease and sickness.(DG)
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(DH)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(DI) 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(DJ) 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(DK) has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[e] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
9 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(DL)— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(DM) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(DN) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(DO) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(DP) on the day of judgment(DQ) than for that town.(DR)
16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(DS) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(DT) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(DU) and be flogged in the synagogues.(DV) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(DW) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(DX) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(DY) speaking through you.
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(DZ) and have them put to death.(EA) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(EB) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(EC) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(ED)
24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(EE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(EF) how much more the members of his household!
26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(EG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(EH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[f] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(EI) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(EJ)
32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(EK) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(EL)
34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
“‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law(EM)—
36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[g](EN)
37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(EO) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(EP) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(EQ)
40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(ER) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(ES) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(ET)

11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(EV) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[h]
2 When John,(EW) who was in prison,(EX) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(EY) or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[i] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(EZ) 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(FA)
7 As John’s(FB) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(FC) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(FD) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[k] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(FG) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(FH) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(FI)
16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating(FJ) nor drinking,(FK) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(FL) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
Woe on Unrepentant Towns(FM)
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(FN) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(FO) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(FP) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(FQ) 23 And you, Capernaum,(FR) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[l](FS) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(FT)
The Father Revealed in the Son(FU)
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(FV) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(FW) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me(FX) by my Father.(FY) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(FZ)
28 “Come to me,(GA) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(GB) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(GC) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(GD) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(GE)
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(GF)(GG)
12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain(GH) and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”(GI)
3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(GJ) 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.(GK) 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath(GL) and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.(GM) 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’[m](GN) you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man(GO) is Lord of the Sabbath.”
9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus,(GP) they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”(GQ)
11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?(GR) 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep!(GS) Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.(GT)
God’s Chosen Servant
15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.(GU) 16 He warned them not to tell others about him.(GV) 17 This was to fulfill(GW) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
the one I love, in whom I delight;(GX)
I will put my Spirit on him,(GY)
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He will not quarrel or cry out;
no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.

24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul,(HD) the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”(HE)
25 Jesus knew their thoughts(HF) and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan(HG) drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul,(HH) by whom do your people(HI) drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God(HJ) has come upon you.
29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.
30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(HK) 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.(HL) 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age(HM) or in the age to come.(HN)
33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.(HO) 34 You brood of vipers,(HP) how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks(HQ) what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”(HR)
The Sign of Jonah(HS)(HT)
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign(HU) from you.”(HV)
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.(HW) 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish,(HX) so the Son of Man(HY) will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.(HZ) 41 The men of Nineveh(IA) will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,(IB) and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came(IC) from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.
43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.(ID) That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(IE)
46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother(IF) and brothers(IG) stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven(IH) is my brother and sister and mother.”
