Ang Balak Laban kay Jesus(A)

26 Matapos isalaysay ni Jesus ang lahat ng ito ay sinabi niya sa kanyang mga alagad, 2 “Gaya ng inyong nalalaman,(B) dalawang araw pa at sasapit na ang Paskuwa, at ipagkakanulo ang Anak ng Tao upang ipako sa krus.” 3 Pagkatapos nito, ang mga punong pari at ang matatandang pinuno ng bayan ay nagpulong sa palasyo ng Kataas-taasang Pari, na nagngangalang Caifas. 4 At nagsabwatan silang palihim na dakpin at patayin si Jesus. 5 Subalit kanilang sinabi, “Huwag sa kapistahan, baka magkagulo ang mga taong-bayan.”

Itinanong nila, “Para sa ano ang pag-aaksayang ito? 9 Sapagkat maipagbibili sana ang pabangong ito sa malaking halaga, at maipamimigay sa mga dukha.” 10 Subalit alam ni Jesus ang kanilang pinag-uusapan, kaya't sinabi niya sa kanila, “Bakit ginagambala ninyo ang babae? Isang magandang bagay ang ginawa niya sa akin. 11 Palagi (E) ninyong makakasama ang mga dukha, ngunit ako'y hindi ninyo palaging makakasama. 12 Sapagkat sa pagbubuhos niya ng pabangong ito sa aking katawan ay inihahanda na niya ako sa paglilibing. 13 Tinitiyak ko sa inyo, saan man ipahayag ang Magandang Balitang ito sa buong sanlibutan, ang kanyang ginawa ay babanggitin din bilang pag-alaala sa kanya.”

Nakipagkasundo si Judas sa mga Kaaway ni Jesus(F)

14 Pagkatapos nito, isa sa labindalawa na nagngangalang Judas Iscariote ang pumunta sa mga punong pari, 15 at (G) nagtanong, “Ano'ng ibibigay ninyo sa akin, kung ibibigay ko siya sa inyo?” At siya'y binayaran nila ng tatlumpung pirasong pilak. 16 Mula noon ay humanap siya ng pagkakataon na maipagkanulo si Jesus.[a]

17 Nang unang araw ng Kapistahan ng Tinapay na Walang Pampaalsa, lumapit ang mga alagad kay Jesus, at nagtanong, “Saan po ninyo nais na kami'y maghanda upang makakain kayo ng kordero ng Paskuwa?” 18 Sinabi niya, “Puntahan ninyo ang isang tao sa lungsod at sabihin ninyo sa kanya, ‘Sinabi ng Guro: Malapit na ang oras ko. Sa iyong bahay ay gaganapin ko ang Paskuwa kasama ng aking mga alagad.’ ” 19 Ginawa nga ng mga alagad ang ipinagbilin sa kanila ni Jesus, at naghanda sila para sa Paskuwa. 20 Kinagabihan ay umupo siyang kasalo ng labindalawa. 21 Habang sila'y kumakain ay sinabi niya, “Tinitiyak ko sa inyo, ipagkakanulo ako ng isa sa inyo.” 22 Labis nila itong ikinalungkot, at isa-isa silang nagsabi sa kanya, “Tiyak na hindi ako iyon, di po ba, Panginoon?” 23 Sumagot (I) siya ng ganito, “Ang kasabay kong nagsawsaw ng kanyang kamay sa mangkok ang magkakanulo sa akin. 24 Papanaw ang Anak ng Tao ayon sa nakasulat tungkol sa kanya, subalit kaysaklap ng sasapitin ng taong iyon na sa pamamagitan niya'y ipagkakanulo ang Anak ng Tao! Mabuti pa sanang hindi na ipinanganak ang taong iyon.” 25 At si Judas na magkakanulo sa kanya ay sumagot at nagtanong, “Tiyak na hindi ako iyon, di po ba, Rabbi?” Sinabi ni Jesus sa kanya, “Ikaw ang nagsabi niyan.”

Ang Huling Hapunan(J)

26 Habang sila'y kumakain, si Jesus ay kumuha ng tinapay, ipinagpasalamat niya ito at pinagputul-putol, at ibinigay sa mga alagad. Sinabi niya, “Kumuha kayo, kainin ninyo. Ito ang aking katawan.” 27 At kumuha siya ng kopa at matapos magpasalamat ay ibinigay sa kanila, at sinabi, “Uminom kayo nito, lahat kayo, 28 sapagkat (K) ito ang aking dugo ng tipan,[b] na ibinubuhos alang-alang sa marami, para sa kapatawaran ng mga kasalanan. 29 Sinasabi ko sa inyo, mula ngayon ay hindi na ako iinom nitong katas ng ubas hanggang sa araw na iyon na iinumin kong panibago na kasama kayo sa kaharian ng aking Ama.” 30 Pagkatapos nilang umawit ng imno ay nagtungo sila sa Bundok ng mga Olibo.

Sinabi ang Pagtatatwa ni Pedro(L)

31 Pagkatapos (M) ay sinabi ni Jesus sa kanila, “Tatalikuran ninyo akong lahat sa gabing ito. Sapagkat nakasulat, ‘Hahampasin ko ang pastol, at magtatakbuhan ang mga tupa ng kawan.’ 32 Ngunit (N) matapos na ako'y maibangon na, mauuna ako sa inyo sa pagpunta sa Galilea.” 33 Sumagot si Pedro at sinabi sa kanya, “Talikuran man kayo ng lahat, hinding-hindi ko kayo tatalikuran.” 34 Sinabi ni Jesus sa kanya, “Tinitiyak ko sa iyo, sa gabi ring ito, bago tumilaok ang manok ay tatlong ulit mo na akong naipagkakaila.” 35 Sinabi sa kanya ni Pedro, “Kahit na kailangan pang mamatay akong kasama mo, ay hindi kita ipagkakaila.” Ganoon din ang sinabi ng iba pang mga alagad.

Nanalangin si Jesus sa Getsemani(O)

36 Pagkatapos ay pumunta si Jesus na kasama ang mga alagad sa isang pook na tinatawag na Getsemani, at sinabi niya sa kanila, “Maupo kayo rito. Pupunta muna ako sa banda roon at mananalangin.” 37 Isinama niya si Pedro at ang dalawang anak ni Zebedeo. Noon ay nagsimula siyang malungkot at mabagabag. 38 At sinabi niya sa kanila, “Punung-puno ng kalungkutan ang aking kaluluwa na halos ikamatay ko. Dito muna kayo at makipagpuyat sa akin.” 39 Lumakad pa siya sa di-kalayuan, at doon ay nagpatirapa at nanalangin, na sinasabi, “Aking Ama, kung maaari, lumampas sa akin ang kopang ito. Gayunma'y hindi ang kalooban ko, kundi ang kalooban mo ang masunod.” 40 Bumalik siya sa mga alagad, at nadatnan niya silang natutulog. Sinabi niya kay Pedro, “Hindi ba ninyo kayang makipagpuyat sa akin kahit isang oras lamang? 41 Magbantay kayo at manalangin, upang hindi kayo malagay sa tukso. Tunay na ang espiritu ay nagnanais ngunit ang laman ay mahina.” 42 Sa ikalawang pagkakataon ay muli siyang umalis at nanalangin ng ganito, “Aking Ama, kung hindi maaaring lumampas ang kopang ito, malibang ito'y aking inuman, masunod nawa ang iyong kalooban.” 43 Bumalik na naman siya at naratnan silang natutulog, sapagkat mabigat na ang mga mata nila sa antok. 44 Kaya't muli niya silang iniwan; umalis siya, at nanalangin sa ikatlong pagkakataon na gayunding mga salita ang binibigkas. 45 Nilapitan niyang muli ang mga alagad at sinabi sa kanila, “Hanggang ngayon ay natutulog pa rin kayo at nagpapahinga? Tingnan ninyo, malapit na ang oras, at ang Anak ng Tao ay ipagkakanulo sa mga kamay ng mga makasalanan. 46 Bangon na! Umalis na tayo. Tingnan ninyo, dumarating na ang nagkakanulo sa akin.”

Dinakip si Jesus(P)

47 Habang nagsasalita pa siya ay dumating si Judas, na isa sa labindalawa. Kasama niya ang napakaraming taong may mga tabak at mga pamalo; mula sila sa mga punong pari at sa matatandang pinuno ng bayan. 48 Nagbigay sa kanila ng palatandaan ang nagkakanulo sa kanya. Sinabi niya, “Ang halikan ko ay siya na nga. Dakpin ninyo siya.” 49 Nilapitan niya agad si Jesus, at sinabi, “Magandang gabi po,[c] Rabbi.” At kanyang hinagkan ito. 50 At sinabi sa kanya ni Jesus, “Kaibigan, gawin mo ang sadya mo rito.” Pagkatapos ay lumapit sila at hinawakan si Jesus at siya'y kanilang dinakip. 51 Ngunit ang isa sa mga kasamahan ni Jesus ay biglang bumunot ng tabak at tinaga ang alipin ng Kataas-taasang Pari at natagpas ang tainga nito. 52 Sinabi ni Jesus sa kanya, “Ibalik mo sa kaluban ang iyong tabak, sapagkat ang lahat ng gumagamit ng tabak ay sa tabak mamamatay. 53 Sa palagay mo ba'y hindi ako maaaring humingi sa aking Ama, at ngayon din ay padadalhan niya ako ng higit pa sa labindalawang batalyon[d] ng mga anghel? 54 Subalit kung magkakagayon ay paano magaganap ang isinasaad ng mga kasulatan, na ganito ang kailangang mangyari?” 55 Sa (Q) sandaling iyon ay sinabi ni Jesus sa maraming taong naroon, “Isa bang tulisan ang inyong pinuntahan at may mga dala pa kayong tabak at mga pamalo upang ako'y hulihin? Araw-araw akong nakaupo at nagtuturo sa templo ngunit hindi ninyo ako dinarakip. 56 Subalit nagaganap ang lahat ng ito upang matupad ang mga kasulatan ng mga propeta.” Sa sandaling iyon ay iniwan siya ng lahat ng mga alagad at sila'y nagsitakas.

Si Jesus sa Harap ng Sanhedrin(R)

57 Dinala si Jesus ng mga dumakip sa kanya kay Caifas, ang Kataas-taasang Pari, sa pinagpupulungan ng mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan at ng matatandang pinuno. 58 Ngunit sinundan siya ni Pedro sa may kalayuan, hanggang sa bakuran ng Kataas-taasang Pari. Pumasok siya at umupong kasama ng mga tanod upang tingnan kung ano ang kahihinatnan ng lahat. 59 Naghanap ang mga punong pari at ang buong Sanhedrin ng huwad na katibayan laban kay Jesus upang siya'y kanilang maipapatay. 60 Subalit wala silang natagpuan bagama't maraming mga sinungaling na saksi ang nagdatingan. Sa bandang huli ay may dalawang humarap, 61 at (S)sinabi nila, “Sinabi ng taong ito na kaya niyang gibain ang templo ng Diyos, at muling itayo sa loob ng tatlong araw.” 62 Tumindig ang Kataas-taasang Pari at sinabi sa kanya, “Hindi ka ba man lamang sasagot? Ano ba itong ipinaparatang ng mga ito laban sa iyo?” 63 Subalit hindi nagsalita si Jesus. Sinabi ng Kataas-taasang Pari sa kanya, “Manumpa ka sa harapan ng Diyos na buháy, sabihin mo sa amin kung ikaw nga ang Cristo, ang Anak ng Diyos.” 64 Sinabi (T) ni Jesus sa kanya, “Kayo na ang nagsabi niyan, ngunit sinasabi ko sa inyo, pagkatapos nito ay makikita ninyo ang Anak ng Tao na nakaupo sa kanan ng Kapangyarihan, at dumarating na nasa ibabaw ng mga ulap ng himpapawid.” 65 Dahil (U) dito'y pinunit ng Kataas-taasang Pari ang kanyang mga damit, at sinabi, “Paglapastangan ang sinasabi niya. Ano pang patotoo ang kailangan natin? Ayan, narinig na ninyo ang kanyang paglapastangan. 66 Ano'ng masasabi ninyo?” Sumagot sila, “Dapat siyang mamatay.” 67 Pagkatapos (V) ay kanilang dinuraan siya sa mukha at pinagsusuntok. Sinampal din siya ng iba, 68 sabay ang pagsasabi, “Di ba't isa kang propeta, ikaw na Cristo! Sino ang sumuntok sa iyo?”

Ipinagkaila ni Pedro si Jesus(W)

69 Noon ay nakaupo si Pedro sa labas ng bakuran nang lapitan siya ng isang aliping babae, na nagsabi, “Kasama ka rin niyang si Jesus na taga-Galilea.” 70 Ngunit itinanggi niya ito sa harap nilang lahat. Sabi niya, “Wala akong alam sa sinasabi mo.” 71 Paglabas niya sa tarangkahan ay nakita siya ng isa pang alipin na nagsabi sa ibang naroon, “Ang taong ito ay kasamahan din ni Jesus na taga-Nazareth.” 72 At muli niyang itinanggi ito na may kasama pang panunumpa, “Talagang hindi ko kilala ang taong iyon.” 73 Pagkaraan pa ng ilang sandali ay lumapit ang mga nakatayo roon at sinabi nila kay Pedro, “Sigurado kaming ikaw ay isa rin sa kanila. Halatang-halata naman sa iyong pananalita.” 74 Kaya't nagsimula siyang magsalita ng masama at sumumpang, “Hindi ko kilala ang taong iyon.” At kaagad tumilaok ang manok. 75 Noon ay naalala ni Pedro ang sinabi ni Jesus, “Bago tumilaok ang manok ay tatlong ulit mo na akong naipagkakaila.” At siya'y lumabas at buong kapaitang umiyak.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

26 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, 2 (A)“You know that after two days (B)the Passover is coming, and (C)the Son of Man (D)will be delivered up to be crucified.”

3 (E)Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in (F)the palace of the high priest, whose name was (G)Caiaphas, 4 (H)and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. 5 But they said, “Not during the feast, (I)lest there be an uproar among the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

6 (J)Now when Jesus was at (K)Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,[a] 7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. 8 And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? 9 For this could have been sold for a large sum and (L)given to the poor.” 10 But (M)Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 For (N)you always have the poor with you, but (O)you will not always have me. 12 In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it (P)to prepare me for burial. 13 Truly, I say to you, wherever (Q)this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told (R)in memory of her.”

Judas to Betray Jesus

14 (S)Then one of the twelve, whose name was (T)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they (U)paid him (V)thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity (W)to betray him.

The Passover with the Disciples

17 (X)Now on (Y)the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, (Z)‘The Teacher says, (AA)My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 (AB)When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.[b] 21 And as they were eating, (AC)he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, (AD)“He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes (AE)as it is written of him, but (AF)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (AG)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, (AH)Rabbi?” He said to him, (AI)“You have said so.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

26 (AJ)Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and (AK)after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; (AL)this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he (AM)had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for (AN)this is my (AO)blood of the[c] covenant, which is poured out for (AP)many (AQ)for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you (AR)in my Father's kingdom.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

30 (AS)And when they had sung a hymn, (AT)they went out to (AU)the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will (AV)strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I am raised up, (AW)I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 (AX)Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 (AY)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, (AZ)before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 (BA)Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 (BB)Then Jesus went with them (BC)to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him (BD)Peter and (BE)the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, (BF)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and (BG)watch[d] with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face (BH)and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let (BI)this cup pass from me; (BJ)nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 (BK)Watch and (BL)pray that you (BM)may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, (BN)your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for (BO)their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for (BP)the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.[e] See, (BQ)the hour is at hand, and (BR)the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (BS)While he was still speaking, (BT)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, (BU)Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, (BV)“Friend, (BW)do what you came to do.”[f] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his (BX)sword and struck the servant[g] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For (BY)all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 (BZ)Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me (CA)more than twelve (CB)legions of angels? 54 (CC)But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” 55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day (CD)I sat in the temple (CE)teaching, and you did not seize me. 56 But (CF)all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” (CG)Then all the disciples left him and fled.

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council

57 (CH)Then (CI)those who had seized Jesus led him to (CJ)Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58 And (CK)Peter was following him at a distance, as far as (CL)the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with (CM)the guards to see the end. 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council[h] (CN)were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, 60 but they found none, (CO)though many false witnesses came forward. At last (CP)two came forward 61 and said, “This man said, (CQ)‘I am able to (CR)destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” 62 And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[i] 63 (CS)But Jesus remained silent. (CT)And the high priest said to him, (CU)“I adjure you by (CV)the living God, (CW)tell us if you are (CX)the Christ, (CY)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, (CZ)“You have said so. But I tell you, from now on (DA)you will see the Son of Man (DB)seated at the right hand of Power and (DC)coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest (DD)tore his robes and said, (DE)“He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, (DF)“He deserves death.” 67 Then (DG)they spit in his face (DH)and (DI)struck him. And some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you (DJ)Christ! Who is it that struck you?”

Peter Denies Jesus

69 (DK)Now Peter was sitting outside (DL)in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” 71 And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus (DM)of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for (DN)your accent betrays you.” 74 Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, (DO)“Before the rooster crows, you will (DP)deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

31 Then tote Jesus Iēsous said legō to them autos, · ho “ You hymeis will all pas fall skandalizō away because en of me egō · ho this very houtos night nyx. 59 Now de the ho ruling archiereus priests and kai the ho entire holos Sanhedrin synedrion were looking zēteō for false pseudomartyria testimony against kata · ho Jesus Iēsous so hopōs they could put him autos to death thanatoō, 60 but kai they found heuriskō none ou, even though many polys false witnesses pseudomartys came proserchomai forward . 69 · ho Now de Peter Petros was sitting kathēmai outside exō in en the ho courtyard aulē; and kai a heis servant girl paidiskē came proserchomai up to him autos and said legō, “ You sy too kai were eimi with meta Jesus Iēsous of ho Galilee Galilaios.” 70 But de he ho denied arneomai it before emprosthen them all pas, saying legō, “ I do not ou know oida what tis you are talking legō about .” 71 Then de he went exerchomai out into eis the ho gateway pylōn, where another allos servant girl allos saw him autos and kai said legō to those ho who were there ekei, “ This houtos man was eimi with meta Jesus Iēsous the ho Nazarene Nazōraios.” 72 But kai again palin he denied arneomai it with meta an oath horkos, “ I do not ou know oida the ho man anthrōpos!” 73 And de after meta a little while mikros those ho standing around histēmi came proserchomai up to ho Peter Petros and said legō, “ Surely alēthōs you sy too kai are eimi one of ek them autos, · kai for gar the ho way you sy talk lalia makes poieō it clear dēlos.” 74 Then tote he began archō to invoke curses katathematizō on himself and kai swear omnyō to them, “ I do not ou know oida that ho man anthrōpos!” And kai immediately eutheōs the rooster alektōr crowed phōneō. 75 Then kai Peter Petros remembered mimnēskomai · ho · ho what rhēma Jesus Iēsous had said legō, “ Before prin the rooster alektōr crows phōneō, you will deny aparneomai me egō three tris times .” And kai he went exerchomai outside exō and wept klaiō bitterly pikrōs.

The Plot Against Jesus(A)

26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things,(B) he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover(C) is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”

3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled(D) in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,(E) 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(F) 5 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot(G) among the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(H)(I)

6 While Jesus was in Bethany(J) in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.

8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”

10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you,[a](K) but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.(L) 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(M)

14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot(N)—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.(O) 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

The Last Supper(P)(Q)(R)

17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(S) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”(T)

18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time(U) is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”(V)

22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”

23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.(W) 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.(X) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him,(Y) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”(Z)

Jesus answered, “You have said so.”

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(AA) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

27 Then he took a cup,(AB) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[b] covenant,(AC) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.(AD) 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you(AE) in my Father’s kingdom.”

30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(AF)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AG)

31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(AH) for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
    and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[c](AI)

32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(AJ)

33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(AK)

35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(AL) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

Gethsemane(AM)

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(AN) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(AO) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(AP)

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(AQ) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(AR)

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(AS) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AT) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(AU)

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(AV) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(AW)

47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(AX) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(AY) and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[d](AZ)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(BA) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(BB)

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(BC) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(BD) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(BE) that say it must happen in this way?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(BF) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(BG) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(BH)

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(BI) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(BJ) He entered and sat down with the guards(BK) to see the outcome.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(BL) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(BM) came forward.

Finally two(BN) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(BO)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(BP)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(BQ) by the living God:(BR) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(BS) the Son of God.”(BT)

64 “You have said so,”(BU) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(BV) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[e](BW)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(BX) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”(BY) they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(BZ) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(CA)

Peter Disowns Jesus(CB)

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(CC) And he went outside and wept bitterly.
