John the Baptist Prepares the Way
3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of (A)Tiberius Caesar, (B)Pontius Pilate (C)being governor of Judea, and (D)Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 during (E)the high priesthood of Annas and (F)Caiaphas, (G)the word of God came to (H)John the son of Zechariah in (I)the wilderness. 3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming (J)a baptism of repentance (K)for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in (L)the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,
(M)“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
(N)‘Prepare the way of the Lord,[a]
make his paths straight.
5 (O)Every valley shall be filled,
(P)and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
(Q)and the crooked shall become straight,
and the rough places shall become level ways,
6 (R)and all flesh shall see (S)the salvation of God.’”
7 He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, (T)“You brood of (U)vipers! Who warned you to flee from (V)the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruits (W)in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, (X)‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from (Y)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. (Z)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 And the crowds asked him, (AA)“What then shall we do?” 11 And he answered them, (AB)“Whoever has two tunics[b] is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” 12 (AC)Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, (AD)what shall we do?” 13 And he said to them, (AE)“Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, (AF)what shall we do?” And he said to them, (AG)“Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your (AH)wages.”
15 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, (AI)whether he might be (AJ)the Christ, 16 (AK)John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but (AL)he who is mightier than I is coming, (AM)the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you (AN)with the Holy Spirit and (AO)fire. 17 His (AP)winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to (AQ)gather the wheat into his barn, (AR)but the chaff he will burn with (AS)unquenchable fire.”
18 So (AT)with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19 But (AU)Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that (AV)he locked up John in prison.
21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when (AW)Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, (AX)the heavens were opened, 22 and (AY)the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and (AZ)a voice came from heaven, (BA)“You are my beloved Son;[c] with you I am well pleased.”[d]
The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

The Temptation of Jesus
4 (BM)And Jesus, (BN)full of the Holy Spirit, (BO)returned from the Jordan and was led (BP)by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for (BQ)forty days, (BR)being tempted by the devil. (BS)And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, (BT)he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are (BU)the Son of God, command (BV)this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, (BW)“It is written, (BX)‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” 5 (BY)And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you (BZ)I will give all this authority and their glory, (CA)for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, (CB)“It is written,
9 (CE)And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are (CF)the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,
(CG)“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
to guard you,’
11 and
(CH)“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, (CI)‘You shall not (CJ)put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him (CK)until an opportune time.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
14 (CL)And Jesus returned (CM)in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and (CN)a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And (CO)he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
16 (CP)And he came to (CQ)Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And (CR)as was his custom, (CS)he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up (CT)to read. 17 And (CU)the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 (CV)“The Spirit of the Lord (CW)is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to (CX)proclaim good news to the poor.
(CY)He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and (CZ)recovering of sight to the blind,
(DA)to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 (DB)to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and (DC)sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were (DD)fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today (DE)this Scripture (DF)has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at (DG)the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, (DH)“Is not this (DI)Joseph's son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, (DJ)‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did (DK)at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, (DL)no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when (DM)the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them (DN)but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And (DO)there were many lepers[f] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, (DP)but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and (DQ)drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But (DR)passing through their midst, he went away.
Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon
31 (DS)And he (DT)went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And (DU)he was teaching them (DV)on the Sabbath, 32 and (DW)they were astonished at his teaching, (DX)for his word possessed authority. 33 And (DY)in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha![g] (DZ)What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? (EA)I know who you are—(EB)the Holy One of God.” 35 But Jesus (EC)rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And (ED)they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? (EE)For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And (EF)reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
Jesus Heals Many
38 (EG)And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now (EH)Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and (EI)rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.
40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and (EJ)he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 (EK)And demons also came out of many, (EL)crying, “You are (EM)the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and (EN)would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was (EO)the Christ.
Jesus Preaches in Synagogues
42 (EP)And when it was day, he departed and went (EQ)into a desolate place. And (ER)the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, (ES)“I must (ET)preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 And he was preaching (EU)in the synagogues of Judea.[h]
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
5 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by (EV)the lake of Gennesaret, 2 (EW)and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were (EX)washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And (EY)he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, (EZ)“Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, (FA)we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, (FB)they enclosed a large number of fish, and (FC)their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. (FD)And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, (FE)“Depart from me, for (FF)I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”[i] 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, (FG)they left everything and followed him.
Jesus Cleanses a Leper
12 While he was in one of the cities, (FH)there came a man full of leprosy.[j] And when he saw Jesus, he (FI)fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, (FJ)if you will, you can make me clean.” 13 And Jesus[k] stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And he charged him (FK)to tell no one, but “go and show (FL)yourself to the priest, and (FM)make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, (FN)for a proof to them.” 15 (FO)But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. 16 But (FP)he would withdraw to desolate places and (FQ)pray.
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
17 On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and (FR)teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And (FS)the power of the Lord was with him to heal.[l] 18 (FT)And behold, some men were bringing (FU)on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, 19 but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on (FV)the roof and let him down with his bed (FW)through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. 20 And (FX)when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, (FY)your sins are forgiven you.” 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks (FZ)blasphemies? (GA)Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 22 When Jesus (GB)perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But that you may know that (GC)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed—“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” 25 And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, (GD)glorifying God. 26 And amazement seized them all, and they (GE)glorified God and were filled (GF)with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”
Jesus Calls Levi
27 (GG)After this he went out and saw (GH)a tax collector named (GI)Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And (GJ)leaving everything, he rose and followed him.
29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company (GK)of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and (GL)their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, (GM)“Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 (GN)I have not come to call the righteous (GO)but sinners (GP)to repentance.”
A Question About Fasting
33 And they said to him, (GQ)“The disciples of John (GR)fast often and (GS)offer prayers, (GT)and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, (GU)“Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 (GV)The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and (GW)then they will fast in those days.” 36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old (GX)wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”[m]
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
6 (GY)On a Sabbath,[n] while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples (GZ)plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, (HA)“Why are you doing (HB)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3 And Jesus answered them, (HC)“Have you not read (HD)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and took and ate (HE)the bread of the Presence, (HF)which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” 5 And he said to them, (HG)“The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
A Man with a Withered Hand
6 On another Sabbath, (HH)he entered the synagogue (HI)and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees (HJ)watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, (HK)so that they might find a reason to accuse him. 8 But (HL)he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, (HM)is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 And (HN)after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And (HO)he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with (HP)fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
The Twelve Apostles
12 In these days (HQ)he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, (HR)he called his disciples (HS)and (HT)chose from them twelve, whom he named (HU)apostles: 14 Simon, (HV)whom he named Peter, and (HW)Andrew his brother, and (HX)James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and (HY)Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called (HZ)the Zealot, 16 and (IA)Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude
17 And (IB)he came down with them and stood on a level place, with (IC)a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of (ID)Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. (IE)And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd (IF)sought to touch him, for (IG)power came out from him and healed them all.
The Beatitudes
20 And (IH)he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, (II)and said:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for (IJ)yours is the kingdom of God.
21 (IK)“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.
(IL)“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
22 “Blessed are you when (IM)people hate you and when they (IN)exclude you and revile you and (IO)spurn your name as evil, (IP)on account of the Son of Man! 23 (IQ)Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for (IR)so their fathers did to the prophets.
Jesus Pronounces Woes
24 (IS)“But woe to you who are rich, (IT)for you (IU)have received your consolation.
25 “Woe to you who are full now, for (IV)you shall be hungry.
“Woe to (IW)you who laugh now, (IX)for you shall mourn and weep.
26 “Woe to you, (IY)when all people speak well of you, for (IZ)so their fathers did to (JA)the false prophets.
Love Your Enemies
27 “But I say to you who hear, (JB)Love your enemies, (JC)do good to those who hate you, 28 (JD)bless those who curse you, (JE)pray for those who abuse you. 29 (JF)To one who (JG)strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic[o] either. 30 (JH)Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And (JI)as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
32 (JJ)“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And (JK)if you (JL)lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But (JM)love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and (JN)you will be sons of (JO)the Most High, for (JP)he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 (JQ)Be merciful, even as (JR)your Father is merciful.
Judging Others
37 (JS)(JT)“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; (JU)forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 (JV)give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put (JW)into your lap. For (JX)with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
39 He also told them a parable: (JY)“Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (JZ)A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is (KA)fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 (KB)Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but (KC)do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit
43 “For (KD)no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for (KE)each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 (KF)The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces (KG)evil, (KH)for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Build Your House on the Rock
46 (KI)“Why (KJ)do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 (KK)Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.[p] 49 (KL)But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and (KM)the ruin of that house was great.”
Jesus Heals a Centurion's Servant
7 After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, (KN)he entered Capernaum. 2 Now a centurion had a servant[q] who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. 3 When the centurion[r] heard about Jesus, (KO)he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, (KP)“He is worthy to have you do this for him, 5 for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us (KQ)our synagogue.” 6 And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, (KR)do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. 7 Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But (KS)say the word, and let my servant be healed. 8 For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard these things, (KT)he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such (KU)faith.” 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.
Jesus Raises a Widow's Son
11 Soon afterward[s] he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. 12 As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, (KV)the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, (KW)he had compassion on her and (KX)said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then he came up and touched (KY)the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, (KZ)arise.” 15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus[t] (LA)gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized them all, and (LB)they glorified God, saying, (LC)“A great prophet has arisen among us!” and (LD)“God has visited his people!” 17 And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.
Messengers from John the Baptist
18 (LE)(LF)The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, 19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one (LG)who is to come, or (LH)shall we look for another?” 20 And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one (LI)who is to come, or (LJ)shall we look for another?’” 21 In that hour (LK)he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and (LL)on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: (LM)the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, (LN)lepers[u] are cleansed, and (LO)the deaf hear, (LP)the dead are raised up, (LQ)the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is the one who is (LR)not offended by me.”
24 When John's messengers had gone, Jesus[v] began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out (LS)into the wilderness to see? (LT)A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings' courts. 26 What then did you go out to see? (LU)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written,
(LV)“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.’
28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 ((LW)When all the people heard this, and (LX)the tax collectors too, they declared God just,[w] (LY)having been baptized with (LZ)the baptism of John, 30 (MA)but the Pharisees and (MB)the lawyers (MC)rejected (MD)the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)
31 “To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,
“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(H) 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(AQ)
4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(AR) left the Jordan(AS) and was led by the Spirit(AT) into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days(AU) he was tempted[f] by the devil.(AV) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(AW) tell this stone to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[g]”(AX)
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(AY) 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(AZ) and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[h]”(BA)
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[i]”(BB)
12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[j]”(BC)
13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(BD) he left him(BE) until an opportune time.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
14 Jesus returned to Galilee(BF) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(BG) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(BH) and everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth,(BI) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(BJ) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(BK) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(BL)
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news(BM) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[k](BN)
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(BO) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(BP) in your hearing.”
22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.(BQ)
23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown(BR) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”(BS)
24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(BT) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.(BU) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.(BV) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[l] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”(BW)
28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town,(BX) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.(BY)
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(BZ)
31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(CA) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(CB) because his words had authority.(CC)
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(CD) Jesus of Nazareth?(CE) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(CF)—the Holy One of God!”(CG)
35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(CH) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36 All the people were amazed(CI) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(CJ) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(CK)
Jesus Heals Many(CL)(CM)
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(CN) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(CO) he healed them.(CP) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(CQ) But he rebuked(CR) them and would not allow them to speak,(CS) because they knew he was the Messiah.
42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(CT) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(CU)
Jesus Calls His First Disciples(CV)
5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[m] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(CW) 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(CX)
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(CY)
5 Simon answered, “Master,(CZ) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(DA) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(DB) 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(DC) 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(DD) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(DE)
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(DF)
12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[n](DG) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(DH) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(DI) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(DJ) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(DK)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(DL)
17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(DM) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(DN) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(DO)
21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(DP)
22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(DQ) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(DR) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(DS)
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(DT) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(DU)
29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(DV) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(DW) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(DX)
31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(DY)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(DZ)
33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(EA) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(EB) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(EC) in those days they will fast.”
36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(ED)
6 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.(EE) 2 Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(EF)
3 Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(EG) 4 He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat.(EH) And he also gave some to his companions.” 5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man(EI) is Lord of the Sabbath.”
6 On another Sabbath(EJ) he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(EK) to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.(EL) 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking(EM) and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.
9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious(EN) and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
The Twelve Apostles(EO)

17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,(ET) 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,(EU) because power was coming from him and healing them all.(EV)
20 Looking at his disciples, he said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.(EW)
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.(EX)
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.(EY)
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you(EZ) and insult you(FA)
and reject your name as evil,

Love for Enemies(FJ)
27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,(FK) 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(FL) 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. 32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?(FO) Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?(FP) Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them,(FQ) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Judging Others(FV)
37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(FW) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(FX) 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.(FY) For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”(FZ)
39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?(GA) 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.(GB)
41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit(GC)
43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.(GD) People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. The Wise and Foolish Builders(GF)
46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(GG) and do not do what I say?(GH) 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice,(GI) I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
The Faith of the Centurion(GJ)
7 When Jesus had finished saying all this(GK) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2 There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6 So Jesus went with them.
He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.(GL) 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son(GM)
11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord(GN) saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”(GO) 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 They were all filled with awe(GP) and praised God.(GQ) “A great prophet(GR) has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”(GS) 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.(GT)
Jesus and John the Baptist(GU)
18 John’s(GV) disciples(GW) told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses(GX) and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[o] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(GY) 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet?(GZ) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:
28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God(HB) is greater than he.”
29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.(HC) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law(HD) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:
“‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not cry.’
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine,(HE) and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(HF) 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman(HG)(HH)
36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet,(HI) he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[q] and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet,(HJ) but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss,(HK) but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head,(HL) but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(HM)
49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you;(HN) go in peace.”(HO)
